Lead Learners On Thursday 4th January we appointed our twelfth team of Lead Learners, who have taken up their posts with immediate effect. Competition for these most prestigious roles is fierce and the quality of the applications exceptionally high, and this year was no exception. Fifty four learners attended the Leadership Experience Training, and of these, thirty seven submitted letters of application. Nathan Rawlings, Alice Martin, Jo Brook and Simon Mason had the difficult task of selecting applicants for interview from a pool of applications that were, in many cases, better than letters we receive from adults looking for work at the school! As a result, we interviewed fifteen learners for the six Lead Learner positions; the highest number we have ever selected. All staff who have had the opportunity to be involved with the Lead Learner selection process wholeheartedly agree that the experience is one of the most valued and rewarding moments in their working lives. Year upon year, we find ourselves overwhelmed, enthused, and generally humbled by the level of passion, drive and commitment shown by our candidates for Lead Learner. For so many of us, being interviewed is one of the most daunting experiences we have to endure. The ability to remain calm whilst under pressure, to think clearly and respond thoughtfully and appropriately to interview questions is a refined skill which some feel that they can never master. It was therefore truly inspiring for our interview panel to witness the absolute professionalism and maturity with which the candidates tackled the demanding questions we put to them, and made the job of deciding on the six Lead Learners as difficult as it has ever been. As a result, we decided to appoint seven learners to the positions by creating a co-leadership role for one of the posts. I am therefore delighted to announce that Rhiannon Ellis (10KHo) and Shannon Grealis (10OCi) will co-lead the responsibility for leading our drive to support youngsters’ progression in their learning, Connie Sarti (10HTr) (environment for learning), Imogen Pearey (10HBr) (virtual world), Emmanuel Kemball (10MGr) (learner wellbeing), Georgia Meyer-Hek (10OCi) (learner attributes) and James Smith (10MRa) (leadership) were appointed as our new team of Lead Learners. The high standard of applications allowed us to again create five Deputy Lead Learner posts so that our Lead Learners would have the support of youngsters who came very close indeed to being awarded one of the leading roles. Thus, Lizzie Grinter (10MRa) (environment for learning), Cameron Newton (10OCi) (virtual world for learning), Jorja Scales (10HBr) (learner wellbeing), Lily Vickers (10MWo) (learner attributes) and Maryann Cooke (10NPo) (leadership) will each deputise for the Lead Learners holding the responsibilities described above, and work closely with their lead to implement their development priorities. The difficulty when going through the selection process for the Lead Learner team is that there are only a finite number of positions to be appointed, and ultimately there will always have to be someone who emerges from the process feeling disappointed. I would therefore like to congratulate all learners who were interviewed on the 4th of January for their fantastic preparation and contribution to the interview, of which they must all be very proud. The three learners who were unsuccessful in securing a position on the Lead Learner team impressed the panel so much
that it was felt they deserved the opportunity to be awarded Lead Ambassador positions. I would like to extend my best wishes to these learners as they prepare to commence their leadership roles. The Leadership Team met with the new recruits on Tuesday 6th January, and every one of us left that meeting feeling excited and enthused about the prospect of working with these youngsters over the course of the next 12 months. The level of energy, positivity and enthusiasm shown by the team as they shared their creative ideas for their development priorities left me in no doubt that these learners are absolutely committed to making our school an even better place to learn, and I am eager to see what the next 12 months brings. I am very proud that I will have the opportunity to work with such a wonderful team. The official duties for our eleventh team of Lead Learners will now diminish as they focus more and more on the challenges they will face in this summer’s exam series. They played an important role in helping us to appoint their replacements, supporting Cohort 10 learners through their leadership training and offering us their views of the learners in that setting. Once again they proved to be a mature, thoughtful, analytical and insightful group of young people as they have done throughout the year where they have advanced the views of young people with great skill as we have taken our school forward. On behalf of our whole community can I thank Elleanna Jenkins (11DBr), Maddie Orrow (11SAr), Ben Whitehead (11SAr), Jack Whitehead (11AMi), Ellie Cardy (11FJo), Isabella Donald (11HBy), Daniel Maher (11DBr), Beth Archer (11FJo), Maddy Dyson (11AMi),Troy Collins (11CFr), Molly Pride (11CFr) and Holly Plank (11FJo) for their exceptional contribution to our school so far this year and thank them in advance for the contribution they will continue to make in these last few weeks prior to their exams. One of the first official duties our new Lead Learners will fulfil is to set up the process for appointing their team of ambassadors. This began in Cohort 10 assembly this week with the launch of the application process. Can I encourage every learner in Cohort 10 to apply for this significant post. By demonstrating your commitment to learning in this way you not only provide evidence for your own future application to college and eventually to work, but also make a public statement about your serious attitude to study. We know that this will translate into better outcomes for you when you leave, so don’t let this opportunity pass. Learners in Cohorts 7, 8 and 9 should give careful consideration to the process Cohort 10 are currently going through. The sooner you all switch on to studying at your most committed (and many of you have been so doing since you started at the school) the more chance you have of being selected for these prestigious positions. Similarly putting yourself forward for every opportunity that comes your way will give you the edge when you do apply in the years ahead, so make sure you are keeping yourself informed about opportunities to contribute to the school. You create your future in the present, now, so make sure you’re creating one of which you’ll be proud.

New Lead Learners and Deputies meet the Leadership Team Our new Lead and Deputy Lead Learners met with the school Leadership Team on Tuesday evening for the first time to outline their plans for the next year. It was wonderful to see so much enthusiasm and hear their creative ideas in their development plans. Exciting times ahead for the team!
Mock Results Day On Friday 5th January, our C11 learners had their first taste of what it will be like to receive their final GCSE results in August. During LS4, they met with their Learning Group Leader in the main hall, who gave them a sealed envelope with their mock results. There were many smiley faces, and a few less so as the learners found out the outcomes from their Autumn mock exams. During the rest of LS4, the learners spent time as a Learning Group, looking over the mock exam process, their revision and preparation for the exams and their final outcomes to see how they can be most successful in their final exams in the summer.
Technology Lesson What's happening in school on Thursday 10th January 2018 Cohort 7 technologists explored the school grounds today in search of inspiration from nature for their acrylic clock project. Braving the drizzle and the mud, they took photographs of leaves, mushrooms and plants to find the right study for their own design. Great fun despite the weather!
U16 Netball Essex Plate Team: Cohort 11 Beth Archer, Corinne Bryant, Emily Eagle, Amber Gent, Megan Stevens, Cohort 10 Emma Boland, Megan Evans and Annabel Hughes. On Tuesday 9th January 2018 the U16 netball team played in the next round of the Essex Plate competition, which involves schools from all across the county. We hosted Saffron Walden County High School and the game soon got under way to avoid playing in the dark. The game got off to a slow start with the team taking some time to find their flow but towards the end of the first quarter there were some excellent interceptions from Emily and Annabel in defence, stealing balls off their exceptionally tall opponents! During the second quarter Amber and Emma started to read each other better and the attacking play improved. Score at half time was 20-3 to SWCHS. During the second half the game became far more fluid and Amber and Corinne worked well to get free from their opposition receiving good feeds from both Megans! Defensive work continued during the last quarter from Beth, Emily and Annabel to try to limit their scoreline but the game finished 36-10, a respectable score against an extremely strong side including Academy players. Sadly, this means the girls have no more games this season and the C11s will now focus on their exams. I have coached many of this squad since C7 so would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those learners who have contributed and committed to the team over the years. It has been a real pleasure to see you all grow and develop as netballers and young people. I do hope you continue playing outside of Honywood!

Cohort 10 Ambassador Launch Thursday 11th January Ambassador Application Deadline Monday 22nd January Ambassador Interviews Monday 5th February - Friday 2nd March Confirmation of posts Monday 19th March Ambassador Assembly Tuesday 27th March 2pm New responsibilities commence Monday 16th April Last year the Lead and Deputy Learners designed a new Learner Leadership Structure. The term ‘prefect’ was replaced with Ambassador. This was because the definition of a prefect, ‘a senior pupil who is authorised to enforce discipline’, was not fit for purpose here at Honywood. Ambassador was a role that a significant number attending the Learner Leadership Experience event agreed with. An Ambassador therefore will be seen as a representative, a developer or promoter of an aspect of learning or of a specified activity. The term Ambassador lends itself to ‘Ambassador for Learning’ whether that be with a Subject, Cohort or our new Support Team. We would like there to be a stronger emphasis on Ambassadors developing learning and engaging in opportunities where this is happening. On Thursday 11th January an assembly was delivered to C10 to launch the process of applying to be an ambassador. They have also all been sent a copy of the assembly PowerPoint and the application form to help them with their applications. I very much hope that C10 learners will take up this valuable opportunity to become an ambassador and look forward to sharing in a later iGazette the learners who have been successful in securing roles.

My Learning Choices Enterprise & Solutions MLCs this week are available to Cohort 7 learners that would like some help developing their ‘Castle Estate Challenge’ project. Key emphasis will be on managing the budget, problem solving and developing the depth and detail of your written explanations and justifications. Sessions will also be available for Cohorts 8s that would like to go over the key factors to consider when ‘locating a business’. Business Studies MLCs this week will be focused on the ‘Marketing unit’ for the Cohort 9s, with the end of unit assessments fast approaching. Sessions will also be available for Cohort 10s who would like to go back through any aspects of the Finance unit as they make a start on ‘Case Study 4.

MFL Cohort 11 why not book an MLC and use the opportunity as 1:1 practice for your upcoming mock speaking exams in German and Spanish. English Please spend some time reviewing your most recent learning points in English. What is it you need to do to improve? Do you know how to move forward with your learning? We have many members of the English team available for you to book an MLC appointment with. Your 1:1 or small group MLC session could be focused on improving an aspect of your writing or tackling a particular question on the GCSE language papers. It might be that you’re finding poetry tricky or the study of a particular text is causing you concern. Whatever it is, don’t hesitate to book an MLC today.
