Internet Safety The use of the internet is fully imbedded in the learning we design for youngsters at our school and we know that as well as making use of the internet for their learning, youngsters see it as a key element in their social lives.

Whilst we have a clear responsibility for teaching our young people the technical knowledge they require to make use of the fantastic resources available on the world wide web, we must also ensure that youngsters learn how to safely navigate the digital world – a big challenge given how quickly and consistently digital media are changing.

On a number of previous occasions I have stated in Gazette that all of us who use the internet should be aware that it can have a negative side and is used by some people in ways which the vast majority of us would consider undesirable. Sadly we all too frequently hear stories about young people who do not seem to use the internet with sufficient discretion and do not seem to appreciate that not every piece of information presented within it is accurate, honest or decent.

The number of young people regularly using social networking sites has boomed in recent years as these sites allow young people to build virtual relationships with others from across the globe. The positive potential of such sites is extraordinary, for example in the way that they help to reduce prejudice by giving young people access to the lives of those they would not normally be in a position to meet; however, they actively encourage young people to share information about themselves which may not always be wise. For example, learners frequently use ‘Youtube’ to post video of themselves and to arrange for these to be seen by people who can subscribe simply by using the website and logging on to an individual ‘Youtube’ profile. Often video clips are being posted which do not overly flatter the young person concerned and would horrify them if in later years they were made available to their employer. Of course, when you are young, such uses of information posted on the web seem incredibly distant. However, employers routinely search the internet to ensure people they are about to employ could not cause any difficulty to their organisation – would you like a future employer to see everything you have posted?

Additionally a small number of users of these sites are not what they seem and use the sites for illegal purposes, deliberately concealing their identity. There are sadly now too many examples of young people coming to harm having shared too openly information via the internet which then falls into the hands of someone who has evil intent.

Every learner who has a profile on one of these sites should reflect very carefully on the information they have placed on it. The following rules are a useful guideline: • Never put personal information on the site of which you would not want a criminal to be aware (such as your telephone number, address or Instant Messaging contact information).

• Never place a photo or video on such a site unless you would be happy for everyone to see it and certainly never post a photo of someone else on your site if you do not have their permission to do so.

• Never assume that a ‘friend’ you have met through the site is telling you the truth and never arrange to meet alone someone who you have ‘met’ in this way.

• Some social media apps have in built location trackers which allows your followers to know exactly where you are. We highly recommend that these features are turned off.

Many young people have webcams built into their computers and use these to broadcast their image to other internet users or to people they know via software such as ‘skype’. However, some learners do not realise that once they have broadcast their image on the internet, it can be recorded by a third party and used in ways with which they would not be comfortable.

Please ask yourself the question, ‘do I want everyone to see what I’m broadcasting’ before connecting up your webcam.

Finally we are seeing an ever increasing number of situations where, in the moment, self-captured images, often of a deeply personal nature, are being sent to a third party via the internet (for example via Snapchat or Instagram). All our learners need to be clear that any image they send of themselves is out of their control once they have sent it. They cannot know who will view it and cannot know who those that view it will send it to. Please do think very carefully about this and avoid putting yourself in such a threatening situation.

I would advise all parents and carers to talk to their youngsters frequently about internet usage. If you have a particular concern, it is always worth asking your youngster to show you their favourite sites so you can monitor the content within. Should you have an anxiety about your youngster’s internet usage, please contact Mr Munro – our designated member of staff who advises on these issues - and he will look to see how he can help.

Respect After half-term we are likely to lose the use of our school fields at break and lunchtime as the winter weather starts to affect us. Caring for our school environment becomes ever more important as we move into this difficult period of the year where we all feel cooped up inside the building throughout the day.

Of course, no self-respecting person, and especially one who shows respect for others, would ever show a lack of respect to their environment, even in the most difficult situation. However, respect for the environment needs to be a priority for us all through the winter months.

I have never been able to understand why it is that people drop litter and the sight of it brings out very negative emotions in me. The comment I am told is sometimes made by learners that compounds my disgust for anyone who does drop litter goes something like this “why should I pick it up, that’s what the cleaners are employed to do”.

Dropping litter shows absolutely no self-respect; furthermore it shows, at the very least, disregard for the views of others. When combined with the ‘thinking’ behind the kind of comment illustrated above, litter dropping can be regarded as contemptuous of others; not much better than sexist, racist, or homophobic abuse of other people. To regard others as so beneath you that their role in life is to pick up your mess is a contemptible attitude; no learner at Honywood should ever hold this view, let alone express it.

The simple facts about the environment are these. If everyone took care, tidied their own mess and thought about leaving things as they would want to find them, our environment would be more pleasant and we would have more money to spend on learning resources. We spend thousands of pounds per year keeping our environment up to scratch and too much of that money (which could be spent on learning resources) goes to put right things that should never have gone wrong.

We all accept that accidents can happen. However, how often do you see something get damaged or broken simply because someone isn’t thinking and behaving sensibly?

We all need to work hard to address this both by showing no regard for those whose silliness causes damage and by ensuring that we are more careful as to how we use our

school. Those that take the view that others should pick up after them have no place in our school. This is a view I want to eradicate and it is up to all of us to show contempt for it. Pick up your own mess and show a willingness to tidy up for others when you find things around you that are not right.

A better environment makes a positive impact on learning.

Let’s make sure that we are creating that environment together for the remainder of the year and that we are especially focused on it as we share our building through the winter months.

Table Tennis Honywood U13 and U16 teams competed in the District final against Ramsey school. The U13 team of Alex Jennings, Mondo Watts, Freddy Smith and Charles Calisin drew two matches each with Mondo and Freddy winning their games but Ramsey were were awarded the match on points countback by one point.

The U16 team of Alex Turners, Sam Halfpenny, Kian Roberts and Fred Barnett all won their matches for Honywood to complete a clean sweep. The U16 will now represent North West Essex in the County Championship which will be held in Harlow on Thursday 16th November.

Netball Team: Hannah Read, Kate Southgate, Izzy Sigournay, Lauren Evans, Ashtyn Newley, Georgia Potter, Jess Neary, Poppy Thacker, Daisy Donnelly and Alice Rissen.

The U14 (C8 & 9) netball team took part in the NW Essex National Schools district stage tournament on Tuesday 17th October @ Felsted School. It was a highly competitive competition and the girls put in a fantastic effort, only losing 2 of their 5 matches to Felsted & Saffron Walden, coming 3rd overall. They played Tabor in their first game and played some outstanding netball winning 11-3. They then went on to draw 3-3 with Notley, which was a hard fought game and one they turned around in the second half after a shaky first half. By the final game against HRS they were tiring, but they dug deep and won 7-4.

The girls worked so hard and never gave up. Well done.

A special thank you to Mr Walters for driving us there and Mrs Evans for her support and scoring.

The Cohort 7 girls had another away fixture to Saffron Waldon school this week.

Saffron Waldon is a very large school with excellent facilities that the girls were impressed with.

The girls played extremely well against a tough team, they held there own and weren't put off by the pace of the game.

Unfortunately they lost the match but have kept their enthusiasm and are ready for the next game after half term with fighting spirit.

Cohort 8 MLA Day On Monday 16th October Cohort 8 embarked on their fifth MLA day which had been carefully designed to enable the learners to apply their attributes to a variety of intense challenges that would give them an insight into whether they had what it took to secure one of the world's most sought after and challenging jobs as an astronaut at NASA. The Friday launch assembly was used to ignite their curiosity as to which skill, attributes and dispositions would be required.

The day itself comprised six challenges; • Learning the International Space Language (Russian).

• Complex Theory Presentation.

• Construction Under Extreme Circumstance.

• Space Fitness.

• Engineering Design.

• Pilot Skills.

The cohort was split into eight main groups and within each group there were teams of four and this helped create a fast paced, competitive day which was overwhelmingly a success. The high standards that we have come to expect were exceeded by the enthusiastic cohort. It was a real privilege to be able to observe the activities and I was delighted to see the way the learners approached it.

Well done to all involved and in particular to the learners who achieved so much in such a short space of time and realised that they were able to apply their attributes under duress and be able to confidently demonstrate just what they are capable of.

C11 Macbeth The English Department arranged for a One Man Show of Macbeth this week to support Cohort 11's understanding of the play in the run up to their mock exams. Simon Floyd is an experienced actor who managed the impressive feat of performing all of the major speeches from the play, along with morphing from Macbeth to Lady Macbeth, the witches to Bacduff. The Cohort 11s enjoyed the show and commented on the actor's energy and enthusiasm for the show. He helped them to understand how it would be staged and the driving forces behind the characters' behaviour. He then somehow had some voice left to take questions from the Cohort 11s about any part of the play they find hard to understand. All in all the show was a great success!

Cake Sale Learners from our MLH and staff supported the Halloween Bake Sale on Thursday 19th October which was fantastically well attended and the cakes sold out in a very short time! Money raised will support the MLH in purchasing gardening equipment and boccia sets for an upcoming regional competition.

Cohort 11 MADE Training A fantastic day on Friday 20th October with @ MADE Training introducing our youngsters to revision techniques that they may not have tried to help with their GCSE exams. It was fun filled workshop, interactive with lots of useful tips. Our thanks to presenter for the day Danny Ward, who ‘made’ it fun and engaging!

Internet Safety On Wednesday 18th October Cohort 7 received an online safety talk from Mr Briggs. He is the safe guarding lead for the school and discussed online safety for youngsters. The key message was never to post anything online that you wouldn't want your parents / carers to see and that you could regret in your future life. Youngsters watched a clip from CEOPS highlighting the dangers of not being safe when using online technology be it on social media, online gaming or the internet. Questions such as do you really know who you are talking /interacting with?

During the evening of Wednesday 18th October we ran an online information evening for families. David Briggs delivered a safeguarding session on the dangers of online activity and how to support youngsters in the technological world we live in today.

Following this, a variety of sessions delivered by the IT team covering these key areas ran on a carousel basis. Safety in the home, filtering, online storage and social media safety guarding, iPad trouble shooting, charging, backups, storage and how they are monitored in school, iL@h and MLP what are they and how do they work were all covered.

My Learning Choices Enterprise & Solutions MLCs this week are available to help develop your understanding of the 4P’s of the Marketing Mix, or for anyone who is still a little unsure of how to use and upload work to il@h. Guidance is also available for Cohort 8 learners that would like to continue to develop their ability to construct justified and supported business decisions.

Business Studies MLCs this week will be focused on the Employment and Consumer laws, and how to apply that knowledge and understanding to various forms of case study questions.

English Many of you have assessments coming up in English over the next two weeks so have you been paying close attention to your recent learning points? Do you know what you need to do to improve further? Do you need some support in responding to the feedback you’ve been given? Whether it’s developing your analysis of a quote from ‘An Inspector Calls’ or unpicking how to use an apostrophe correctly, book an MLC with a member of the English team to get support and guidance you need.

Lily Vickers 10 MWo

Lily has overcome huge challenges in her dance classes since beginning her GCSE course. She has conquered anxiety and doubt, and has come back more secure and confident in her abilities. Lily has since been using her skills and knowledge to coach other learners in the school production and has been able to turn her hand to directing, choreography and performance. She should be very proud of her continuing Dance skills.

MFL “Cohort 11, it’s never too early to start revising for your mock exams, so why not book an MLC and focus on a specific paper in French, German or Spanish with support from a member of staff.”
