C11 Update

COHORT 11 UPDATE We have arrived at the time at which C11 leave us to go on study leave. The cohort did not really believe us at the beginning of the year when we tried to tell them how quickly the time would go, but it has properly dawned on them, especially because the GCSE exams are now well underway.

The written exams began on Monday 13th May and were preceded shortly before by the MFL speaking tests with a few practicals (Art, Drama, PE) taking place before the Easter break. The Easter break itself was populated with revision classes and has complemented a full after school revision programme which began in January. Anyone would be hard pushed to suggest that this cohort have not had the best of any extra-curricular support for a C11 to date.

Other than that, they had had their second mock exam experience in November 2018 which was followed by receiving their results in January in the same way they will receive the results to the real GCSEs in August this year.

Most of LS3 time has been devoted to preparing the learners for life on the outside through college applications, interview tips and making decisions about their immediate and longer term future, part of which is likely to influence any decisions they make at this stage. Learners have predictably gone for a wide range of possible future pathways including courses at Braintree College, Colchester Institute, Colchester 6th form, CRGS, apprenticeships and other colleges further afield.

What lies ahead in the shorter term now is Prom which takes place on 28th June. The behind-the-scenes prep for this on the part of the learners has been taking place for months with girls spending months thinking about their outfits – a nice distraction from the hardship of C11. And behind the logistical scenes they have Mrs Frogley to thank for organising what will be a very memorable event to mark the end of their time at Honywood.

We are Hannah Byrne, Lead Learner for Wellbeing, and Faris Bilbeisi, Deputy Lead Learner for Wellbeing. Throughout our time on the role, we hope to provide the support and resources for learners to keep a healthy mental and physical wellbeing. For example, we would like to improve our mentoring schemes, and improve the after school clubs. If you have any contributions, please do not hesitate to get in contact with us, we’d love to hear your wonderful ideas!

We are Kate Southgate and Maya Robson, the Lead and Deputy Lead Learners for Progression.

Our aim is to not only set our learners up for their time in Honywood but afterwards as well.

We want our learners to feel comfortable about what their adult life will consist of. We will work along with various different people within the Leadership team to create the best possible outcome.

We are Roxie Orrow and Harry Ratcliffe. This year our aim is to make activities throughout Honywood more inclusive for all learners. We can achieve this goal in many ways, one of which would be to increase the variety of clubs we offer at Honywood. These new activities can enhance leadership skills within learners. One of which can entail a gym club. Historically Honywood has been a school that has priorities and values such as; code of conduct, respect and wanting the best for the learners. In my opinion learners should do the same towards teachers due to the fact that they provide learners with life skills as well as knowledge to set them up for the big wide world in which, thanks to Honywood, they will be able to accomplish goals and deal with everyday disappointments and limitations.

As Lead and Deputy Lead Learners of Attributes, we intend to make the school a better place by making the Attributes more prominent in our day to day learning. We are hoping to introduce an Attributes promotion scheme, highlighting the importance of the 8 C’s and we would like to work with the ambassadors to develop the Attributes in each subject and aspect of school.

Overall our aim is to work with the other lead learners to create a calm and pleasant working environment for both learners and staff.

As Lead and Deputy Lead Learner for Environment, our aim, by the end of this year, is to create a more positive learning environment, by making small but effective improvements to classrooms and outdoor seating areas. We also have an idea for an initiative that will directly involve the learners, thereby creating an environment that they will respect and take more responsibility for.

C8 ART EXHIBITION

Distinctive Landscapes

Thirty five Cohort 10 learners enjoyed a glorious long weekend in Dorset in March this year. They are all studying for their GCSE in Geography and went to see the text book come to life. We stayed at PGL Osmington Bay in a repurposed Pontins holiday camp with climbing walls, lots of space to hang out and a stunning view over Weymouth Bay towards to Isle of Portland. Although the food was a little basic the accommodation was great and we had the Old Harry Rocks area all to ourselves.

On Friday we had a walking tour of Weymouth led by me (Mrs Brinkley), as I grew up in Weymouth I know all the stories about how the Black Death arrived in through the port there and we looked at the shape of the settlement and how it has changed from a fishing port to a tourist destination. We bought a football and went to play on the beach after being wowed by the sand sculptures and the colour of the sand and sea, which are a bit different to the beaches here in Essex. Friday evening we played a big game of Manhunt at the PGL centre, it turns out that some of us are better at hiding and seeking (and being quiet) than others.

Saturday was a stunning day and we went to some of the best natural landscapes the UK has to offer. Walking down towards Durdle Door one cohort 10 learner said ‘this is the best thing I have ever seen in real life’. That really sums up the awe and wonder that kept on coming throughout the day. We measured the footpaths for signs of erosion and then enjoyed the view of Durdle Door whilst learning about what it’s made from and how it was shaped by geomorphic processes. From there it was an energetic walk up and over the hill to Lulworth Cove. We saw Stair Hole which is a cove in the making and then took more measurements of the beach at Lulworth. We were looking for evidence of wave type, erosion and deposition to use in our field work. Of course there was a bit of time for some delicious ice cream and a picnic too.

We went back to the PGL centre and everyone had a good go at the climbing wall, some people really challenged and surprised themselves and it was so good to see how much they collaborated and encouraged each other to overcome their fears and celebrate their successes.

Saturday evening we worked hard in the classroom to put our learning into action and find out how to produce graphs and evidence to show our fieldwork findings. It was tough going with many learners not used to having such a physical day followed by hard thinking in the evening!

Sunday we followed in the footsteps of Mary Anning the famous fossil hunter and we went to explore Lyme Regis.

They have just invested in a huge new sea wall so we were able to see how hard engineering can be used to protect valuable coastlines but may also cause a conflict.

We had some time measuring the beach and looking at the work groynes can do to overcome longshore drift.

From Lyme we went along to WestBay that some of you may know better as Broadchurch, there we could see erosion in action as there had recently been a huge landslide and the beach was a dramatically different shape. Our final beach of the day was Chesil, again unique and a great example of a tombolo. We went up on the top of Portland to enjoy the view back along the jurassic coast and got some great photos by the Olympic Rings too. More time in the classroom that night to put our learning into action, one group of learners managed the stretch and challenge task of Spearman’s Rank which is not normally tackled until A-level Geography!

Monday we went back into Weymouth and looked at the changing town centre. It would not be a complete Geography field work experience without counting traffic or pedestrians so that’s what we did. It was then time to say our goodbyes to Weymouth and head back to Honywood.

Big thank you to Mrs Frogley and Mr Calver for giving up their weekend and Mother’s Day to support the trip.

Learners say they had a good time and enjoyed being outside and seeing the places for themselves. It has really boosted their writing in their recent mock exams and we can see the benefit in their understanding of landscapes and processes too. Next year’s trip for current C9 Geographers will be launched shortly, please keep an eye out for your letters.

Ambassador Assembly Our newly appointed Ambassadors and Lead Learners received their ties in front of an audience of family and friends. It was a lovely relaxed event, and our new Leaders in school can now proudly wear their ties as they take up their new roles. Congratulations to all of the learners and a thank you to family who came along to support them. Also, a big thank you to all of the staff who supported this process by carrying out the interviews and giving our learners a genuine experience to support applications later this year for college.

C9 learners are now coming towards the end of the third of six topics that they’ll be covering in Business Studies. Their current ‘Human Resources’ unit has seen them investigate and develop an understanding of the recruitment and selection process, different methods of motivation that businesses use to get the best out of their employees and how technology and digital communication is used to enhance a business’s ability to communicate effectively to all its stakeholders in an increasingly globalised market.

Having worked through almost half of the course and completed a variety of summative and formative assessments, there are a number of C9 learners that have produced some outstanding work and down exceptionally well in assessments: Jude Battersby and Sam Trevains both achieved a grade 9 in their ‘Business in the Real World’ case study; Ashten Newley, Eloise Rigby and Alex Larner all achieved a grade 8 in their ‘Business in the Real World’ end of unit assessment; and a special mention to Katie Speed, Ryley Brazier, Fleur L’Esperance, Joseph Morris, Shae O’Brien, Issie Brewer and Daisy Donnelly who are also making outstanding progress in the subject.

C10 learners are now in the process of receiving and acting on feedback from their mock exams. Having now covered all six topics of the Business Studies course, they are now building towards two final practice papers of the year. Learners will be using their mock exams to identify and address any gaps in their knowledge and understanding, as well as dealing with key misconceptions that may have seen them misinterpret or incorrectly structure aspects of their mock exam papers. This time of the year creates an opportunity for learners that find themselves disappointed with mock exam outcomes to quickly do something about it, and those that did well, to build on their positive grades, so that all C10s can enter their summer break confident that they can see a pathway forward to a successful C11. Considering they have almost a year to the date of their final Business Studies exams, mock exam outcomes have been encouraging.

As ever, there are a number of learners that have done especially well and therefore deserve a special mention: Alice Rissen, Charlie Day, Isaac McCracken, Lauren Bishop, Rosie Bingoga, Caitlyn Ellis and Olivia Rowley all achieved an accumulated grade 6 across both their mock exam papers; Harry Jones, Jack Raine, and Charlie Symonds all achieved an accumulated grade 7; and Mia Nichols, Ruby Cosford, Jess Neary and Olivia Rowley all managed to achieve a grade 8 in one of their papers. Well done to all!

A final well done and good luck to all C11 Business Studies learners. Having gone through a testing final year of the course, which involving at least 8 practice paper assessments, mock exams and focused revision

sessions, I am confident in saying that they leave as prepared as any cohort I’ve seen ahead of their final exams. No matter what the outcome, it is certainly fair to say that 99.9% of all C11 Business Studies learners couldn’t have done any more than they have. Well done and all the best for the future!

New Business Studies Ambassadors A welcome to our new Business Studies Ambassadors.

Having gone through a very competitive interview process, I’m happy to present Mia Carter-Joy as the Lead Ambassador for Business Studies, and Isaac McCracken and Sadie Cornish as the final two Ambassadors to complete the team: Let’s introduce them .....

My name is Mia Carter-Joy and I am the new Lead Ambassador for Business Studies. I’m really looking forward to improving not only the class work, but getting to help learners and future learners to become more passionate about the subject. I will be able to offer an organised and calm mind to the team, and I ‘m looking forward to the opportunity to work with Mr Williams and the other Business Ambassadors, to help to improve the Business Studies curriculum and attainment outcomes at Honywood.

My name is Isaac McCracken and I’m one of the new Business Studies Ambassadors. I’ve been studying business for the last 2 years at GCSE level and have really enjoyed learning about the real business world holds. Business Studies has enabled me to understand more about the amount of work that goes into everyday businesses and also how to run a successful enterprise.

I also enjoy the amount of freedom we get in the subject and how independent the work we complete is. As an ambassador I hope to give more support to the younger years coming up into GCSE learning. Specifically helping them to answer certain exam style questions as I found this quite challenging when I first started. For the older years I hope to help them to cope with the amount of work they have to revise, giving them advice on how I revise business successfully, giving them the best chance they have for their exams.

My name is Sadie Cornish, I am the other Business Studies Ambassador. Business Studies has really

helped me with everyday life as it helps you with financial situations and prepares you for key knowledge for the future ahead. I can’t wait to bring news ideas to the team and develop the Business Studies department, as I am very passionate about the subject, and about helping develop other peoples understanding of the world of business.

The £20 Challenge A big well done to all that took part in this year’s £20 Challenge, in which learners volunteered to take part in an entrepreneurial enterprise of their choice to raise money for not only the school, but also for St Helena Hospice.

The total amount raised was £685, with the winning team (Rosie Orrow, Lily Cox and Megan Brennan) making an impressive £306 of the final total, and have therefore been awarded the ‘Entrepreneurs Trophy’ for 2018/19.

Miss A Girling - Subject Leader in Media Studies

Media Studies GCSE Throughout the three years within Media Studies, learners will be studying a range of media products from different industries such as film, music, radio, newspaper and video games.

When we study these media products, we focus on media language (how the media text communicates with the audience), media representation (how people and places are presented to us) media audience (who is being targeted by the media) and media industry (how media products are produced and advertised).

Towards the end of cohort 10 and the first term in cohort 11 learners are working on their coursework.

They are given the time to produce their own media product, planning and designing their own product and taking all their own photos.

Cohort 9

Cohort 9 are currently studying music videos, their creation and the music industry. Learners are now planning their own idea for a music video and are beginning to design the CD cover to accompany their music video. It is important that learners are considering the target audience for their music video and justifying the decisions they are making.

Cohort 10

Learners are beginning the planning phase for their non-exam assessment (coursework). This provides learners with the opportunity to be creative and consider how they would like people to be presented through the media product. Learners are also aiming to challenge stereotypes through their media product.

Cohort 11

With cohort 11 learners currently undertaking their GCSE exams, the media studies learners had 18 media products to revise for in preparation for their final exams. In class we have worked through practice papers, drafted extended answers and revised key media theory and subject specific terminology. Good luck in your exams!

Within Enterprise and Solutions learners have recently completed their Media Studies units in both cohort 7 and cohort 8.

Within cohort 7 learners have been exploring the magazine industry, focusing on why magazine sales have declined, how magazine companies are responding to these challenges and how magazines are catered towards their target audience.

Following these learning sessions, learners have been given the opportunity to plan, design and create their own magazine cover and inside page focusing on a genre of their choice.

Gloria, cohort 7 “I enjoyed that we made a physical copy instead of just a digital one. An aspect that I found the hardest was my front cover as I was trying to make it as realistic as possible. I overcame this by researching popular magazines.”

Nadia, cohort 7 “We had a chance to understand how hard it is to create a magazine with a specific time limit.

I found writing the article the hardest because we had to lay it out like we were professionals and make it look realistic but to overcome this I found some examples and tried laying mine out in a similar format.”

Olivia, cohort 7 “I really enjoyed making my magazine and designing it and I’m really proud of it. I had to work the hardest on my article because I didn’t know what to write and how to make it look as realistic as possible” Cohort 8 learners have been exploring the video game industry and how it has evolved over the past 20 years with a focus on the Lara Croft franchise. Lara Croft is a media product that learners will be studying as part of their Media Studies GCSE and therefore studying this franchise as part of the key stage 3 Enterprise and Solutions curriculum provides learners with a good starting point as they enter GCSE media studies.

Following the exploration of Lara Croft, the evolution of the video game industry and representations with gaming, learners were faced with the challenge of designing their own video game within a genre of their choice. Learners were working on this project over an extended period therefore effective time management was crucial to succeeding in this task.

Harry, Cohort 8 “I really enjoyed creating the video game as this was creative and was different to other projects we have completed before”.

Alfie, Cohort 8 “I felt like this project was relatable because video games are something that many young people access. I therefore found studying the gaming industry enjoyable and the project felt personal”.

Cohort 8 learners have now started to work through Season 9 of Enterprise and Solutions, ‘Growing a Business’, which is providing them with the opportunity to study just what personal qualities and characteristics make up successful people in business and entrepreneurs. They have also been exploring how the stock market works, how and why countries trade with each other and rely so heavily on well-established trade agreements, which saw learners take part in an interactive team challenge – ‘Building a Business Empire’. It was great to see how well learners collaborated and problem solved in such a competitive and time pressured task, which highlighted some individuals as the potential business leaders of the future. Learners are now working towards the opportunity to investigate an entrepreneur of their choice, before finishing the season, as well as exploring the importance, impact and various approaches to motivation in business.

As part of C8s Possibilities study period, 8Y4 carried out a project on Biodiversity and how biodiverse Honywood School is. Working in groups they did a survey on the plant and animal species on site, researched, discussed and debated about why biodiversity is a positive thing. Together with Mrs Putter, the class concluded that we could increase the biodiversity of the school by planting some more trees- specifically fruit tress to encourage bird and insect species.

The class donated money to a fund and Mrs Putter went to Ken Muir, a fruit stock provider, who very kindly helped us purchase 4 fruit trees. Mrs Dorothy Godsell donated some special root formation powder to give the little trees the best start possible- a big thank you to her. Three apple and a pear tree were planted in the school grounds close to the bus turning circle with the help of the learners and other members of staff. Thank you to everyone involved!

On 3 April, a team of C8 learners took part in the IET FaraDay challenge hosted at Ramsey School – our team of learners built a prototype that would be useful for the new James Webb telescope. They were brilliant! They built a protective shield using electronics and many other components in their design. They had to listen, create, discuss, plan, work as a team, problem solve, reflect and develop their ideas, keep a log and finally present their prototype.

Everyone was involved and learners were not allowed any help from their teachers!

Well done to our learners who took part in the Brilliant Club this year, working with Cambridge University creating their dissertations. Congratulations to Jude Battersby and Luke Evans who both received a 1st and to Louise Ball, Will Ferguson, Holly Ginn, Maxine-Emily Harvey, Charlie Mullenger, Freddie North, Roxie Orrow, Harry Ratcliffe, Eloise Rigby and Felix Wilson, who all received a 2:1 for their dissertations. These were marked using university criteria and were pitched well beyond what is expected at GCSE which makes their accomplishments even more impressive. Look out for information about this project next year as we open it up to a new cohort of learners.

HONYWOOD SPORTS Cohort 11 Girls’ District Rounders tournament On Wednesday 24th April it was the cohort 11 girls’ last district rounders tournament. The team included: Brandii Whymark, Lily Owen, Kenzy Sherif, Esme Scott, Maryann Cooke, Mia Stimson, Emily Reeve, Maddie Smith, Olivia Campe and Lilly Brewer as captain.

The team played 3 matches. Firstly they played Hedingham. The girls played a great game and won. Kenzy Sherif and Maryann Cooke helped secure the win by both catching a player out. Brandii Whymark and Lilly Brewer both hitting rounders bringing the final score to 5 ½ - 1 ½ .

The second match the girls played was against Maltings. Lily Owen helped the girls get another win with an exceptional catch and by scoring a rounder. Brandii Whymark also scored 2 rounders in that game. The final score was 5 ½ - 3.

Lastly the final match the team played was against Notley. It was another great game: with only one bat left the girls were drawing 3 ½ - 3 ½ , Brandii Whymark’s outstanding rounder scored the winning point moving the score up to 4 ½ - 3 ½ .

Cohort 9 Girls District Rounders tournament On Wednesday 21st May our C9 girls became District Champions. Well done girls.

Futsal A huge well done to Hadley Quattrucci in cohort 8 who recently trialled and was selected into the Great Britain futsal team for his age group. Hadley will be going to Barcelona in October for the AMF Futsal World Cup! A fantastic achievement!

Rugby Congratulations to Rafe Donnelly, James Raine, Harry Plester, James Goodchild and Sam Stinton on winning the Essex league for U16 Rugby as part of the Braintree team!

Congratulations to Xanthe Goodman in C8 who has been selected to represent England at the Pony Club Polocrosse Home Internationals in July.

Charlie Mullenger in 9RHO took his formation flying lesson towards his private pilots licence.at the end of May. He is certainly reaching for the skies....what a massive achievement for a 14yr old. He is looking towards a career in the RAF in the future. Good luck Charlie!

Why did you decide to do the work you are doing now?

Having spent two and half years posted at the Infantry Training Centre, Catterick, as a Corporal (Section commander) I found that I enjoyed training, coaching and mentoring the recruits, so that they could go on to achieve their own personal and collective goals. Also, having ticked all the boxes that I set out to when I joined the 1 Royal Anglian in 2006, I took the decision to leave the Army and start training as a Secondary School teacher at Honywood.

On 4th April, our qualifying team of C7 learners were at the Royal Hospital School for the final. During the day, they designed and built their car, ready to race against other schools.
