WHAT’S

So far this year cohort 7 have been taking a look at natural forms and being encouraged to look at things closely, taking inspiration from things around them for their artwork.

Cohort 7 held their first exhibition inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe, producing giant chalk flower drawings that took over the art department and brought life to the walls. Displaying some truly amazing artists in the cohort already!

They have also moved on to explore printmaking with Alison Headley and Angie Lewin, being given the choice between Press print or Collograph, learners were able to produce a print inspired by one of these Artists.

Cohort 7 are now looking at African patterns, the meanings behind Adinkra symbols and African spirit animals and will soon be bringing all of these elements together to design a clay tile which will be their first 3D piece of the year.

Cohort 7 art club have also been busy at lunchtimes exploring some artists we don’t get to look at with our current projects... so far Picasso and Henri Rousseau. They completed these lovely copies of Picasso’s work in small groups and their current work in progress is a larger jungle themed Rousseau mural.

HAPPENING IN

Cohort 8 learners have been busy exploring the world of pop art, creating a variety of 2D and 3D outcomes for the exhibition on the 24th April. They’ve really thrown themselves into this project and their efforts really promise to put on a great display of artistic talent.

We started this project with a tea party still life and encouraged learners to explore the theme of food. Learners have then been inspired by Claes Oldenburg, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol to create their own personal pop art responses.

GCSE Art Unfortunately due to exam board rules we cannot show you any current GCSE work in this piece. Our GCSE artists are currently working hard on coursework and exams.

Some projects included in the coursework are Structures, Real me, Natural forms, My Surroundings and Fish Boat Water.

Cohort 10 sat their mock exam this week and Cohort 11 sit their final exam on 1st and 2nd April!

We wish our artists all the best of luck and we hope to see all of you in the summer when we celebrate our cohort 11s success and finally show off their work in the summer arts evening exhibition.

Our KS3 learners have been working on building new skills and investigating new materials.

Our Cohort 7 learners are working their way through the following projects; a laser cut nature inspired clock, a note holder incorporating wood, plastic and metal, a textile storage holder and making different dishes in food focusing on healthy eating.

Changes in our GCSE’s means that the new Food Preparation and Nutrition is now separate from our Design and Technology subjects to allow learners to focus on the following food preparation skills – these are intended to be integrated into the five sections: food, nutrition and health, food science, food safety, food choice and food provenance.

Our C7 learners have all taken part in the ‘Race for the Line’ competition building rocket cars in groups in class.

We were lucky with the weather and launched them earlier this week on the tennis courts, the quickest qualifying top three groups will be going to the regional finals at the Royal Hospital School in Ipswich.

Cohort 8 learners have been working their way through four different projects in the media we offer at GCSE. They have experienced cooking different dishes in food, creating a cushion cover with an environmental or political message, creating their own graphical chocolate packaging and making a small timber box using a variety of woods.

Technology Club This year the D&T staff have dedicated our Tuesday lunchtime to our new D&T clubs, we have had a great uptake on some of them and will be putting on new clubs each term, if there is anything you would like us to run please let us know and we will see if we can make it happen!

We have also been running our Primary clubs on a Wednesday again this year, we have focused on CAD CAM and the year 5 and 6 learners have been enjoying learning about 2D design and creating their own rulers and mobile phone stands.

Great Honywood Bake Off Learners and staff were once again asked to participate in a “Great Honywood Bake Off” with this year’s theme being Easter.

We were overwhelmed by the creativity and imagination of all the cakes involved and the judging was tough to choose the most creative, tastiest, skilful, quality and overall champion. This year’s overall winner is Scarlett Thorp 8AWe. Following all the judging and sampling, the cakes were sold and £104.54 was raised, which will go towards the renovation of the learning environment in the food room.

We also celebrated Fairtrade fortnight in the food room with interactive displays and activities along with some delicious Fairtrade treats and raised £23.14 with all proceeds going to the Fairtrade foundation.

Can we prevent an ‘ecological apocalypse’?

Cohort 7 had a chance to look at our local wild areas and see how we treat them. They were inspired by a quote from Chris Packham who is worried that we treat nature as though it is an art installation. The whole time there are nature reserves, zoos and wildlife parks so we look after the rest of nature around us?

Learners had a choice of travelling to Walton-on-the-Naze by bus or walking to Marks Hall Arboretum just on the other side of the A120. Activities on the day included sampling for biodiversity using the quadrats, using pond dipping nets to look for evidence of plastic pollution and investigating the planting and buildings in both places. There was also a bit of time to play some wide games such as stuck in the mud and manhunt. At Walton, learners also went into the Essex Wildlife Trust centre to look at the interpretation boards and investigate how they are looking after the Naze.

There were then some resources shared with learning groups to do in the rest of enrichment week and beyond. Some from Surfers Against Sewage and the Plastic Free Schools Challenge, we hope learners will all make a personal pledge to reduce their impact on our local and global environments and help to prevent the ecological apocalypse Chris Packham has warned about.

Although the learners that went to Marks Hall had a lot of walking to do, all the learners reported they had an enjoyable day.

We asked learners what their favourite parts were about their day out and here are some of their comments.

We have also taken on some of the ideas for how to improve the week for next year’s cohort 7. So we’ll be looking to give you more time to do the activities, get more time on the beach and maybe go into the Naze Tower if we can. There is nothing we can do about the length of the walk to Marks Hall though!

Thank you to Cohort 7 and all their Learning Group Leaders and other staff for participating so well and being so willing to go to new places and try new things, a truly enriching experience for all!

n Thursday 21st March the Cohort visited the Natural History and Science Museum as part of Enrichment Week 1. The theme of the week was “Is the World a beautiful or violent place?” We investigated Earths 4.5 billion year History, how dinosaurs lived and died, how we evolved and how violent Earths tectonics are. We experienced an earthquake and studied volcanoes. In the Science museum we explored space travel, superbugs, global warming and looked at forces through lots of fun experiments. The purpose of the day was to explore how our world works. It was a long day, but lots of credit to the Cohort for their fantastic engagement and focus throughout the week. Particular thanks to Thomas Last, Ben Gaskell, Ebony Blowers, Harri Arkle, Ethan Skubich, Dakota Martin, Matthew Collier, Nathan Spraget, Marcia Swain, Riley Perks, Safia Tafajoul, Jake Ring, Layla Al-Riyami, Isabel Corbett and Corey Bowers who volunteered to lead research for the week and led an assembly to feedback to the Cohort on Friday.

On Tuesday 2nd April 10 C8 learners have volunteered to explore online safety by taking part in a conference led by Essex Police called ‘Brecks Last Game’. This is a film based on the real life murder of a 14 year old in Grays in February 2014. We hope the conference will provide an ideal opportunity for these learners to address and reflect upon the values, skills and attitudes in order to use online technology safely whilst increasing the awareness of the risk of online grooming.

Monday 18th March saw the majority of C9 embark on their enrichment trip to London for the day. Learners had already made their individual choices to spend the majority of the visit at a location that appealed most to them, which consisted of the BBFC (British Board of Film Classifications), British Museum, The Royal Courts of Justice and The Bank of England Museum.

The British Museum – Learners that visited the British Museum had access to ‘the museum of the world, for the world’, in which they had opportunity to explore galleries and exhibitions across a broad variety of periods and topics e.g. Medieval Europe, Ancient Egypt, Britain and Europe, Roman Britain, The Middle East and much, much more.

The Royal Courts of Justice – As well as having a tour of the court, which is actively used for Queen’s Bench Division and Family Division proceedings, learners took part in a mock trial within the Royal Courts. Learners that chose this option were given specific roles to play, which include not only aspects of the prosecution and defence, but also administrative roles, as they played their part in a ‘cyber bullying’ case. Having been exposed to and discussed the content of the proceedings prior to the visit, learners had the opportunity to prepare and rehearse, so that they arrived at the workshop ready to deliver their aspect of the legal proceedings. A special mention must go to Mr Gribben for organising and preparing all the learners so diligently for their mock trials.

The feedback from the courts was wholly positive, in which learners were described as ‘mature’, ‘confident’ and ‘enthusiastic’.

The Bank of England – For learners that had a keen interest in business, finance, and the history of the modern economy, the Bank of England Museum offered a variety of interactive activities that learners took the opportunity to work through in their own time, which helped to develop and enhance their understanding of UK’s central bank and the impact that it not only has on the country as a whole, as well as enhance a genuine desire to learn more about how and way I country operates as it does.

The British Board of Film Classification – This visit really benefited those learners with a genuine interest in the film industry. The experience offered a seminar at the BBFC, in which learners were provided the opportunity to discover the history of film classification, by looking closely at the age rating process. The seminar also explored a number of films that focused on key issues, such as whether material submitted is ever in conflict within the law. Film cuts, controversial decisions, rejects and appeals were also discussed with learners too.

Having spent the majority of the day at their chosen destinations which related to the learner’s specific area of interest, learners were then led through central London via a number of key administrative, political and legislative locations, on which the foundation of the country is built. These locations included Downing Street, The Cenotaph, New Scotland Yard and the Houses of Parliament, before meeting up as a collective once again at Victoria Embankment Gardens, ready for the bus pick up and their journey back to Honywood.

he C10 enrichment week focussed on exploring wellbeing from different perspectives. On Monday learners were off timetable taking part in a series of 9 different workshops looking at different aspects of well being including: physical, mental, social and financial well being. Learners took part in physical challenges including circuit training and a team bike ride and row, tested their culinary skills in a ready steady cook style healthy smoothie challenge and got creative completing giant jigsaw puzzle pieces with images of thing that represented happiness to them. We welcomed a number of visitors to the school as part of the day with 2 classrooms being turned into escape rooms, karate instructors leading a taster session and even a visit from a four legged furry friend as part of a pet therapy experience. All learners also completed a CPR workshop and have all been presented with certificates for this.

LS3 sessions for the rest of the week built on the day with a talk on mental health in assembly, discussions on financial wellbeing, budgeting and spending and an opportunity to create a mental health first aid kit highlighting the equal importance of mental health alongside physical health.

The energy and enthusiasm from every member of the cohort was fantastic to see and feedback from both staff and learners was really positive.

C11’s theme for Enrichment Week was 'How can I secure a successful future?'

Throughout the week there were a variety of experiences/workshops designed for learners to opt into that complement the theme. These workshops were designed to empower C11's to plan, design and approach their future (short term, medium term and long term) in the most purposeful way to secure success and happiness.

The workshops included: Dilemmas, Choices and Responses to the Holocaust.

The youngsters in Cohort 11 were able to gain a real life insight into life after Honywood and were fascinated about the different experiences on offer.

Indeed, it was so nice to see such a wide range of workshops on offer from career advice, to relaxation advice and learning about the wider world around them. Each individual workshop was a success with the learners and we would like to thank all those individuals and companies that came along to provide such interesting opportunities to cohort 11. Each workshop was provided to the youngsters at no cost and we very much appreciate the time given by all involved.

It was so refreshing to see what Honywood stands for in action providing cohort 11 with a truly enriching experience to take their learning beyond the classroom and hopefully provide them with an insight to their next steps in their young lives. The feedback amongst all the learners was very positive and every day provided many memorable moments for all involved. It is important to recognise the positive energy that was shown by all of the cohort towards the week which ensured the week was a true success.

There are lots of interesting and exciting things happening in Geography again this year.

Cohort 7 have been discovering the answer to ‘How does water shape the landscape?’

We have focussed on processes and looking at real life examples of rivers, coastlines and glaciers around the world. We have had some interesting debates about who ‘owns’ our water and who should pay for the homes on the coastline if they are in danger of falling into the sea. It was great to tie this in to

enrichment week when a large number of C7 travelled to Walton-on-the-Naze and saw for themselves how quickly our coastlines are changing.

Cohort 8 are about to make their GCSE choices and we have been welcoming them into some of our C9 sessions as a taster of what the course can offer. Mrs Brinkley presented the GCSE Geography outline to interested families and once again so many of the adults commented on how much more interesting Geography is now than when they were at school! We are really pleased to offer such an engaging and modern GCSE and that is why we chose OCR B Geography for an enquiring mind Learning in the classroom has been all about ‘Why are we so obsessed with the weather?’

Learners have been finding out all about the processes that bring weather patterns and events to us, here in the UK. We’ve also been learning about weather events in other countries, including looking at the devastating Cyclone Idai that struck Mozambique and surrounding countries last week.

Cohort 9 GCSE Geographers have been working hard on their second topic ‘Sustaining Ecosystems’. They made fantastic displays for their ecosystem

marketplace and collaborated with each other extremely well. The topic has moved us through the importance of ecosystems, into why tropical rainforests matter to us and most recently the importance of polar regions. Learners had begun the year with the Global Hazards topic, during our time learning about earthquakes, volcanoes and climatic hazards there were lots of real life events making great examples for us to learn about, but it does make us feel a little opportunistic. Just before going off for the Christmas Holidays Toby said ‘let’s hope there are no more disasters now the topic is over’ a few days later there was a major tsunami in southern Asia… Geography truly is everywhere and always!

Most of our Cohort 10 Geographers headed off to PGL Osmington Mills to conduct their GCSE field work. They have been learning

all about ‘Distinctive Landscapes’ and the processes that shape and change our environment. We could not wait to get out of the classroom and see why the Jurassic Coastline is such a national treasure. have been putting their MADE training into practise with their revision for their mocks which are coming up after Easter; Tuesday

Cohort 11 have now completed all their learning and are working really hard with their revision for their final exams. Some cohort 11 just went to Waltonon-the-Naze to complete their physical field work element, the others did this on the Dorset coastline in July as part of our Portsmouth visit. We have also been investigating the issues of housing in our local area looking at the up to the minute decision to build 300+ homes in Coggeshall next year. Our hope is to visit the site in the coming weeks to see how Geography is happening all around us, and how it causes great controversy. Geography revision sessions are available on Tuesdays, before school with Mr Calver and after school with Mrs Brinkley. There is also an intervention session with Mrs Brinkley on a Friday after school. Well done to all those learners who have been finding extra time to dedicate to their revision with us in school and at home. The Geography exams are taking place on Tuesday 21st May (Our Natural World), Wednesday 5th June (People and Society) and Thursday 13th June (Geographical Exploration) .

Ambassadors We would like to say a big thank you to our C11 Geography Ambassadors for their great contributions to the department this year. We wish Molly Watts, Mia Stimson and Joshua Walker all the very best in their upcoming exams. The new C10 Geography Ambassadors are Harry Jones, Jake Mead and Megan Hewitt, welcome to the team! We look forward to seeing everything you are able to bring to your Geography department in the coming year.

Since the beginning of the year, the History department has been able to ask outside speakers to talk to C10 and C11 historians about their experiences. This is something that as a department we are looking to expand on over the coming years. In March we welcomed the Holocaust Educational Trust into Honywood to deliver sessions to some of our Cohort 11 learners about experiences in the Holocaust and the ethical dilemmas raised from the Holocaust during the most recent cultural enrichment week. In January we also had the privilege of welcome Susie Barnett a Holocaust survivor, into the school. Susie spoke for an hour about her family’s experience, growing up in Nazi Germany and how her family were lucky enough to escape Nazi persecution. I know from talking to the learners that they found the experience both an incredibly humbling and rewarding experience. This is something that we are looking to continue for more GCSE learners in the coming years.

In November we also welcomed Bert Hayward, a Korean War Veteran, who came into school and talked to the Cohort 10 learners about his life growing up and his experiences serving in the British Army during the Korean War and Suez Crisis. Learners were given the opportunity to ask questions about the Korean War which they are studying at GCSE. As part of the Cohort 11 Enrichment Week several learners including many historians had the opportunity to talk to Michael Goodman and University Professor of War Studies and Intelligence and Kings College University in London. Learners were given a mini lecture on intelligence before talking to Professor Goodman about Kings College University.

I would like to take this opportunity to once again thank all of those who have come in to the History department so far this year to talk to our learners about their experiences and areas of

GSUS comes to Honywood!

Honywood was the site of GSUS Live last week – an automated, interactive, ethical experience. You will have seen the orange and white trailer parked in the front car park. The interior is even more imposing – aquamarine walls decorated with cartoons of scenes from the life of Jesus surround you, and interactive screens rise from the desks “like something out of Star Trek”.

Learners worked in pairs to consider the troubles of three characters – Jack, Sophie and Ben. These characters were facing problems and issues around rejection, fear and forgiveness; it was the learners’ job to give them advice. They were also encouraged to consider how these issues intersected with their own lives and how they could learn from and share their own experiences.

The point is for learners to consider the pressures facing their peers and themselves, and how to support and engage each other when facing such pressures in real life. They were also reminded of the time-honoured question ‘What Would Jesus Do’? The activity gave links to Bible verses and stories as a basis for ethical ideas, and encouraged learners to think about each of our decisionmaking processes: how do we decide in any particular situation what the right thing to do is?

There were also links made to prominent ethical thinkers such as Nelson Mandela and Dr Martin Luther King Jr. I was particularly moved by this quotation from a speech by Mandela: “I knew if I didn’t leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I’d still be in prison.”

For KS3 learners, this was a brief return to the Religion and Philosophy rotation they experienced before half-term, an opportunity to review their understanding and remind themselves of key ideas about ethics and religion. For GCSE learners, it acted as a way to support study or revision of Christian beliefs and teachings, and the ethical and philosophical framework of the religion.

C7 Netball District Tournament - 5th March On 5th March the C7 netball team travelled over to HRS to play in the annual North West Essex Netball Tournament. First they played Ramsey and it didn’t take the girls long to find their rhythm and were soon ahead. They finished the game 5-0 so a confident start from the team. The next opponents were Alec Hunter and the excellent play continued with great teamwork down the court and excellent feeding into the attacking circle providing plenty of opportunities for goals.

After 9 minutes of play the girls came away with another victory of 5-0 meaning they finished top of the group.

They went through to the semi finals and faced Notley. Their defence was really strong meaning the girls had to work hard to get the ball down the court with lots of interceptions from both sides. It was a very tense game with the scores even at half time. The girls continued to work hard in the second half, it was a nail biting finish with all the girls feeling the pressure! The game finished 1-1 leading to an extra 2 minutes. After this the score was still a draw so the tournament organisers went back to the pool games and

calculated the goals scored. Thankfully due to the high scores we went through to the final to play Joyce Frankland Academy. The girls were caught off guard in the first half as the opposition were very strong and made lots of interceptions.

They finished the first half 3-0 down. After a motivating team talk at half time the girls came out fighting and scored 2 goals in the second half but it wasn’t quite enough to win the game and it finished 3-2 to Joyce Frankland.

The girls should be really pleased with finishing runners up during this tournament having faced the toughest competition they’ve seen this year.

The team have shown amazing commitment to netball and the school throughout the year, consistently attending training and always being enthusiastic. It’s been a pleasure to coach the team!

On the weekend of 22nd and 23rd March, 22 C10 learners departed Honywood School at 8.30am, making the short journey to Danbury for their Duke of Edinburgh bronze award (practice) expedition.

During Saturday, in two separate groups, learners worked on their navigation/incident management and team work skills whilst walking 24km through countryside, forests and woodland, arriving back to the campsite early in the evening. This was particularly impressive as many had never carried a rucksack bigger that their school bag, never mind one that was twice their body weight (essential snacks I was told!). During the evening, they attempted to create ‘Masterchef’ style dishes on camping stoves before efficiently pitching tents and getting lost in the woods (OSCAR!!).

To say the night was ‘chilly’ is an understatement, Mr Flanders even woke up with frost on his pillow!

Fortunately, Sunday morning brought glorious Sunshine from 5am, allowing everyone to rise early, collapse and pack away their tents to enjoy a hearty cooked breakfast in the sunshine.

Sunday was a true test of the skills acquired over the past few months, walking 12 kilometres (un-assisted) on a preplanned route. A couple of groups did get lost, but this was quickly rectified (“No shortcuts sir……….honest!”).

It was a pleasure to spend the weekend with such positive and dedicated learners whose resilience to adversity (and cold) was challenged and conquered - well done!

Subject Leader for Design & Technology What three words would you use to describe your job role?

Creative, fulfilling and challenging!

What do you like most about your job?

Seeing how the children react to the magic of making something, when they really connect with it they take so much pride in what they produce!

What do you wish you knew more about?

I would love to go on a workshop with Lindsey Mann to learn how to work with anodized aluminum, I think this is something I could bring back to the classroom and the learners could use it to make some amazing work.

What’s the most recent app you’ve downloaded?

I have been exploring how to use Adobe Draw with my iPad pencil, I have still got lots to learn but it’s great to show live sketching/demo to a full class with Google Classroom.

What was the best book or series that you’ve ever read/watched?

I am watching “This is us” at the moment, it is fantastically shot and the actors/actresses are so believable.

What’s your favourite line from a film?

“Feel the Rhythm! Feel the Rhyme! Get on up, it’s bobsled time!”

Cool Runnings Brings back great memories from Honywood Ski 2019!

If you could only travel to one other country, which country would you choose?

It would have to be America, both of my brothers live there, we don’t get to see each other as much as we would like to. There are also so many different places and Cities I would love to explore.

What’s your favourite family tradition?

Now I have children of my own I am loving passing down some of the traditions from my childhood. My mum finally bought an old farmhouse in France in the hamlet we used to go to when we were young. It’s strange but wonderful seeing my children scoot around the ‘loop’, visit the same towns or jump off the pontoon in the lake as we did when we were children.

One of the new traditions is the arrival of Eric our Elf on the 1st of December, he isn’t mischievous but creates scenes or hides around the house every night.

My children love waking up every morning searching him out to see what he has done. We also have an eclectic decorated tree with decorations from my childhood and ones that we have bought over the years.

Have you ever had five minutes of fame?

I was in my local paper as I was a champion donkey derby rider!

Would you rather go hang gliding or whitewater rafting?

I would love to go hang gliding, even better if I could go ski paragliding!

What city would you most like to live in?

San Francisco, as soon as I land at the airport I feel like i’m home!

Abbie Wilson 10KBr Abbie continues to show herself as a kind and resilient learner. She recently cut all her hair and donated the length to a charity who use the real hair to make wigs for children who have lost their own hair. Abbie also fundraises for them too.

Xanthe Goodman 8JLa Xanthe has been an outstanding representative for the school, meeting visitors and showing them around our school. Outside of school she has just qualified for the UK Polocross U14 Player Development Pathway which means she will be coached by the UK squad coaches with a view to playing internationally.

Bethany Toulson 11MGR Bethany has been working hard in the build up to her practical Food Preparation and Nutrition practical exam, and felt confident to complete the 3 hour exam alone where she had to complete 3 dishes within the time frame without any additional support. She has completed the practical with high accolade from a tasting panel and has kept positive and upbeat throughout the trawling process. Well done Beth.

Congratulations to Brodie, Hermione, Fraser, Megan, Maya and Alice who have all qualified for the assembly round of the Jack Petchey Speak Out competition. The speeches were outstanding and it was very difficult to choose six finalists. They will present to the C9 assembly and the winner and runner up will go forward to represent the school in the regional finals! Good luck everyone.

LEARNER ACHIEVEMENTS

A massive well done to Felix Standen who came 2nd in his regional trampoline semi-final today and has qualified as part of the regional team to take part in the final at the Birmingham NEC Arena in June. Even more impressive as he only started training a year and a half ago!

Congratulations to Sienna Gray C9, (holding the certificate in the picture) who, as part of the 'N'Vibe dance group, became U14 British Advanced Champions this weekend at the SOAR competition in Wales. A fantastic achievement. The group then went on to compete against all of the winners from the day and came overall second. Next step will be the World Championships in the Summer. Good luck Sienna!

Congratulations to Lily Tilyard and Rosie Waine of C8! Braintree Town under-13 girls are celebrating after being crowned as champions in division two of the Essex County Girls League.

Congratulations to former learner Flight Sergeant Rebecca Cordeiro (pictured second from the left front row), member of the 295 Witham and Rivenhall Air Cadets, who last night was presented as Lord Lieutenants Cadet for 2019 at County Hall in Chelmsford.
