What’s happening in Science?

C11 GCSE Revision C11’s have just completed another set of practice papers. This was done so they can find out their current grade and identify areas they need to improve on. We now have revision clubs every Thursday after school with over 80 learners attending in the first week. Keep up the hard work!

Top tips for the exams • Know the key formulas for Physics. If you don’t have a copy these are on the AQA website or ask your teacher.

• Practice exam style questions. These can be found on our google sites website or ask your teacher.

• Learn the keywords and use these in your answers • Show your working out • Bring a calculator!

C10 Selective breeding Miss Gamble’s C10 class have been looking at selective breeding. They focused on what it is, how it’s done and the reasons for and against. They finished the session by debating their own opinions it.

C9 Physics calculations Mr Harrison’s C9 class have just started a unit on waves. This unit includes using calculations that they will have to learn off by heart for their GCSE exam. For example, calculating how fast a wave is travelling.

Here are some top tips from the C9 learners about how to remember the 23 equations; Practice questions. Once you know how to apply it in that context it will make it easier in exam questions. Also learning the units can help you learn them off by heart for example, metres per second tells us you divide metres by time - Luke Evans You can make songs to remember them twinkle twinkle little star, power equals I squared r - Zoe Hodgkins When remembering equations I find it easier to use the equation triangles. When I see w over f times s I know what it means (weight = force x speed). I like to visualise it. It helps me remember it easier - George Williams Try not to over complicate it. C8 Recycling Miss Gamble and Mrs Vaughan’s class have investigated the current issues around recycling.

They learnt about how different materials are recycled and then discussed the pros and cons of recycling including current issues such as plastic in the ocean.

Here are some of their opinions; I think that people should recycle because it saves the environment and then the animals that live in the sea or the oceans don’t eat it or get caught in.

C7 Rockets Mrs Warren’s C7 class have been investigating the different forces that act on rockets. They then used this knowledge to try to create a paper rockets that could reach the highest. Here are some thoughts on the lesson!

I enjoyed seeing some of the rockets fly so high that they went out of sight. I learnt that you have to tape it together very tight and if we wanted to we could put a cone on top to make it go higher – Selina Youell We created them with paper and sticky tape and put a plastic top on them. My group made a paper cone to go on top to make it more stream lined and then we attached them to a pump and shot them in the air. Ours didn’t go as high as we hoped. – Molly Barnes I really enjoyed setting off our rockets and learning about gravity and mass. We learnt that the air pressure will push the rockets in the air and gravity will pull the rockets back to earth. Overall I have really loved the rocket experience - Max Cherry

Year of the periodic table The United Nations has designated 2019 as the international year of the periodic table of chemical elements. The year will coincide with the 150th anniversary of the table’s creation by Dmitry Mendeleev.

C7 - Race for the line This half term learners in C7 will be taking part in a STEM project called Race For the Line. This event has been organised by the Bloodhound SSC team who are currently developing a supersonic car which they hope to travel at speeds of 1000mph. Learners will be using their scientific knowledge of forces and aerodynamics to help them design a rocket car in science which will be build from a foam block in tech and raced on Monday 25th March with the 2 fastest teams progressing to the regional finals to compete against other schools in the area. Cars in our races last year reached speeds of nearly 30mph and we are hoping to have members of the RAF in to support the race day itself.

New York, 1929: a city of shoot-outs and ruthless fighting, where gangsters’ molls dance the night away and even hoodlums are mugged. This is the world of Bugsy Malone, brought gloriously to life in this year’s Honywood School production.

For sheer, foot-tapping energy, there was no other show in town. Performers from all cohorts across Expressive Arts, worked tirelessly to bring this Bugsy to life. The result was a spectacle of colour, humour and riotous fun in which splurge guns splatter, shaving foam fly and the action spills from the Honywood stage and out into the aisles. This is a show of great foot stomping tunes such as ‘Fat Sam’s Grand Slam, the powerhouse ‘My Name is Tallulah’ to Fizzy’s wistful ‘Tomorrow’. Performances were excellent throughout, from the main cast – Bugsy, Fat Sam, Dandy Dan, Tallulah and Blousey – to the inspired buffoonery of Fat Sam’s gang and the adrenalin of the boxing ring. Ensemble delights are interspersed with moments of solo brilliance, and New York accents were nailed to perfection. The live band was on top form, playing with superb energy and extracting every ounce of fun and sadness from the show.

This, and meticulous choreography, with dancers often occupying every inch of the stage, helped create a show which at times felt like a professional production. Huge credit must go to every learner, on stage and behind the scenes, and to all the other members of staff and former learners who have worked so hard to make this show the high quality that it was.

GERMAN EXCHANGE After a long (but never boring!) coach journey, we arrived in Eppelheim on the evening of Saturday 2nd February where we were welcomed by the host families and teachers of the school.

Our Cohort 9 learners were then given the whole day on Sunday as a ‘Family Day.’ The Exchange Families went above and beyond to show their guests the local area and a real taste of Germany.

On Monday we spent some time at Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Gymnasium where learners were able to take part in lessons and see what the German school system is really like. Later on that morning we headed to the Town Hall where we were officially greeted by the Mayor of Eppelheim who shared some of the town’s history with us. Our VIP treatment didn’t stop there as we took part in a short photo shoot and then were featured in 2 local newspapers the very next day!

We spent Tuesday in Stuttgart at the Ritter Sport Chocolate museum where learners made their own chocolate bar and then stocked up on supplies in the museum shop! There was also some shopping time in the town centre.

We headed to the ZDF TV studios in Mainz on Wednesday where learners had a guided tour of the studios and watched a live broadcast. We then had lunch in the fantastic café.

On Thursday we explored the local city of Heidelberg, along with its magnificent castle and beautiful views of the River Neckar. We walked back through the city centre to the famous Café Schafheutle where we all enjoyed traditional ‘ Kaffee und Kuchen’ ( coffee and cake ).

Our departure provided mixed emotions for the learners; all of them so happy with having enjoyed such an amazing trip but many of them quite upset to be leaving their exchange partners and their lovely families. The journey home provided us all with an opportunity to reflect on the highlights of the trip. I came home feeling exceptionally proud of every youngster that took part in the exchange trip, particularly because I spent the week hearing nothing but positive comments about them from the various tour guides, teachers and families that they spent time with. Going on an exchange trip can be daunting, however all 17 of our learners fully embraced the experience and as a result they have already built fantastic relationships that will no doubt be strengthened when we welcome our German friends to Coggeshall in July.

Finally, a really big thank you goes to Mr Wood for his excellent contribution to the trip! He was determined throughout the trip to ensure that learners had the best experience possible.

What an incredible evening showcasing the talent and work of our dancers. C11 had the onerous task of producing the show, and creating their own choreography in preparation for their final GCSE practical Dance exams. The GCSE syllabus is a contemporary based course and the learners have had to watch and analyse choreographers to inspire their own creative works. The show demonstrated some very thought provoking themes and it was clear from their presentation how hard they had worked to produce pieces of such a high standard.

The C11 Dancers were supported in the show by learners from other cohorts. The C9 and 10 learners, who are also studying dance at GCSE were able to showcase some of their own work and the show also featured some young talent from C7 and 8.

A packed show, with some wonderful performances, honed by practice, collaboration and dedication. Well done to everyone involved in the show and a special thanks to the musicians and singers who supported the dancers.

od Ski 2019

A

fter a long absence, Honywood Ski Trip has returned to be ran annually and the half-term just gone played host to what can only be described as an extremely enjoyable and memorable week by all involved. In total, 69 cohort 10 and 11 learners and 8 members of staff made the 23 hour coach journey to the Austrian region of Dachstein West where they stayed at VitalHotel Gasou, an amazing hotel with comfortable rooms, located just 5 minutes away from the slopes and perhaps most importantly (due to the exhaustion of a full days skiing) provided incredible food that kept the energy levels of everyone at a high.

The days on the slopes gave learners 4 hours of Ski School, with fully qu ski instructors, which was catered to the leaners skill level. This mea the progress the learners made in just a week was incredible. How one aspect of the experience that made the days so enjoyable w the weather. The first 5 days skiing at approximately 1620m there was not a cloud in sight allowing for the perfect ski conditions.

vening activities kept us all busy after skiing as we participated in bowling, went out for ice cream, watched a ski show, a quiz night and on e last night enjoyed each others company with e card games!

of the Ski Trip was largely down to the levels of maturity, ce and togetherness the learners demonstrated throughout the hey were a delight to take away and have set very high expectations any learners that would wish to join the trip in the future.

A massive thank you to the staff that supported the trip, sacrificing their holidays with their families to facilitate a memorable and thoroughly enjoyable week for all involved.

Planning for Ski Trip 2020 has already started so keep your eyes peeled.

HONYWOOD NETBALL Team: Hannah Read, Lauren Evans, Hannah Pyatt, Emily Pyatt, Hannah Day, Ashtyn Newley, Daisy Donnelly, Gemma O’Doherty.

The C9 netball team competed in the district netball competition this week (Tues 26/02).

They competed in 4 group games. Their first game was against Alec Hunter and after a shaky first few minutes they won 7-2. Their next game was against Rickstones and they won 9-1.

Their third match was against Notley and they performed fantastically well winning 15-0.

Their last game was against HRS which we knew would be a hard match. The girls put in 100% effort and held them off as well as they could. Final score 1-5 to HRS. This put us into the semi-final as runners-up of the group. For this game they were up against Tabor who have some fantastic netballers in the county squad. Our girls however did not let this faze them and went on with great confidence. They worked hard and really pulled the game back in the second half.

Unfortunately they lost by one goal! (8-9).

This then put us in the 4th and 3rd place play-off against Newport. The girls were tired but determined to finish on a high and won 5-1, giving them overall third place in the district.

NAMIBIA FUNDRAISING We are working with some of our C9 learners who are fundraising to take part in a trip to Namibia where they will work for a charity. Attached is a poster from three of those learners who are holding a quiz night. They also spent some time in the Coop in Coggeshall selling squares on a map to customers to kick start their fundraising!

On Wednesday 27th February, C10 attended a workshop run by the "Our Amy Foundation".

Our Amy Foundation was established in January 2018 in the memory of Amy Vigus, a local girl, with the purpose of educating the local community on the misuse of recreational drugs. Sadly Amy passed away after taking an unknown substance at a festival in London. She was just 20 years old. The workshop today is to raise awareness to young people and the community about the dangers of recreational drugs.

What’s your favourite family tradition?

Playing ‘extremely bad lookalikes’. This is a game I have played with my brother and sister since we were kids and we still play it today. It involves being in a public place like a café or restaurant and subtly finding random people that look ever so slightly like somebody famous. You state the famous person and then the people you are playing with have to find the really bad lookalike. Try it! It’s a lot of fun (But be subtle about it!)
