Open Evening
OPEN EVEN On Thursday 4th October we opened our doors to prospective Honywood learners and their families. The evening was extremely busy with many families taking the opportunity to come and explore our school in order to better understand how learning is constructed at Honywood. On arrival, every family was provided with a guide who took them around the school and showed them all the different curriculum areas that the school offers. These guides were all volunteers and ranged from Cohort 7s, who had just been with us for 5 weeks through to C11 learners who have 4 years of knowledge about the school. I and other staff were very proud of all our guides who did an an amazing job, guiding their families around, talking with pride and passion about their school and exemplifying how confident they are with meeting new people an engaging them in conversation. Many of the families who came round also commented on the quality of their guides and we received several emails following the evening about how professional and articulate they were. In addition to our guides we also had a large number of learners from C7 through to C11 who supported in Subject areas, again, these learners were excellent ambassadors for our school. They engaged younger learners and their families in the learning experiences on offer and also spoke confidently about the subject they were representing. I am immensely proud of all the learners who volunteered their time and came to support our open evening, they are all a true credit to our school and did an amazing job.

In addition to the tour of the school and experiencing learning in different Subject areas, families also had an opportunity to listen to the headteacher’s presentation. In this presentation, James Saunders outlined his vision for our school and this was supported by Finlay Newton, Max Cherry and Rhiannon Ellis, one of our Lead Learners who also gave speeches which echoed the Capital vision outlined by James Saunders. The learners spoke eloquently and confidently, the two C7 learners had only been with us 5 weeks! All in all, the evening was a great success, there was a real buzz around the building and we look forward to all the new C6 learners who will make the choice to become part our school next September.
Colchester Careers Convention
The whole of Cohort 11 visited Colchester Careers Fair where they were able chat to education providers, work based learning providers, employers and professional bodies and ask about pathways to achieve their aspirations. Before they went, they had discussed Career pathways and looked at the Ambitions brochure in Learning Groups to check out who they particularly wanted to see, which helped them to focus on an Action Plan. There were over 90 stalls and learners came away with lots of useful information to help them with their career plans!

HONYWOOD SPORT C7 Netball Essex Cup vs Beauchamps High School As we neared Wickford the excitement levels were growing for the first ever C7 Honywood netball team! The team were ready having been training since September and they had developed a great bond in that short time, something that was clearly evident as the game started. The team made a strong debut and finished the first quarter 3-0. With more excellent circle work from Joanne Neary and Amelie Cooper the score continued to increase throughout the second and third quarters. The support in centre court was outstanding with Gloria Nyc, Georgia French, Eloise Duffy, Niamh Cunnane and EsmĂŠ Webster all making brilliant interceptions and creating space for each other. The team limited their scoring very effectively and Amy Barnes-Grime and Fern Mascot looked very strong in defence. The team showed exemplary team work throughout the game and I was impressed with their level of communication and encouragement for each other. The game finished 14-2 which was a fantastic start to their netball season and I am looking forward to our next game for more of the same! U14s Netball Essex Cup Report by Lauren Evans (9EPe) On Wednesday 10th October, the U14 netball girls played their first Essex Cup match against Tendring School. It was a hard fought, and close game, our girls played amazing and worked very well as a team. Our first quarter was like a warm up quarter to get used to playing together, but soon after we got into the swing of it and finished the match very strong, winning the last quarter. Everyone played so well and we supported each other amazingly. Thank you for the support from Miss Thomas, Mrs Jones and Mr Saunders. Well done girls!

First Round of the U16s Essex Cup - Honywood 3 - Stanway 2 On Thursday 11th October Honywood faced a tough first game to start the year. Honywood opened with the first goal by Josh Ambrose with a great run and assist by Cameron Newton. However, Stanway were the better team coming off at half time but the score was 1-0 to Honywood. As always, Mr Bilton’s team talk did the trick as within 2 minutes of the second half starting Honywood went 2 -0 up. Stanway continued to press and were rewarded with a goal to make it 2-1. Honywood dug deep and James Baker used the wind to his advantage and curled a sweet cross to the front post from a corner and managed to catch the keeper out. Stanway didn’t give up and to their credit were rewarded with goal of the night with a 35 yard screamer from midfield into the top left hand corner giving the keeper no chance. Honywood made some changes and it was a credit to Honywood’s defence for holding out as Stanway continued to keep up the pressure right to the end of the game. Honywood held on to win 3-2
Congratulations to Sam Trevains who won a gold medal on the 21st October representing the school in the EASTERN AREA BRITISH SCHOOLS REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. Well done Sam!
Under 16’s Rugby District Tournament. Honywood came second overall in the Under 16’s rugby district tournament. Honywood vs Alec Hunter 24-0 The first game together for the new team and the talents of the rugby players matched with the flair and speed of some of our new additions resulted in an excellent performance by Honywood. We scored some excellent tries with our defence putting the pressure on the Alec team from the onset not giving them any scoring opportunities during the whole game. Honywood vs Tabor 0-7 Two very evenly matched teams where most of the play was in the midfield. Honywood looked to wear down the opposition but in over committing to attack we were caught on the break by Tabor. Honywood worked hard to get back into the game and showed great team work but with the time running out, we could not cross the white line to get some points on the board. Semi-Final Honywood vs Newport 20-0 The whole squad had to be used in all of the games due to the nature of the physicality of the previous games but all players both from C10 and C11 were prepared to make the hard yards and put in the big hits. Some fluid back play from James Pugh and James Raine we were able to get the ball out to both Rafe Donnelly and Jamahl Godward who used their natural speed to beat the stranded Newport defence. Another solid performance from all of the forwards not giving the opposition any chances to break through and the pack showed their dominance in the scrums.
Final Honywood vs Tabor 0-19 Matched against Tabor again in the final this game was going the same way as the group match, until Honywood left some gaps in our line which the very experienced players from Tabor took advantage of and scored 3 well worked tries. It was a gutsy performance by the whole team who all should be very proud of their efforts on this day.
C11 REVISIO On the 17th October, our C11 learners took part in a fantastic workshop run by MADE for Education. The two hour workshop covered revision methods and ways to manage stress as they approach the GCSE exams. In the evening, Parents were then invited to attend a similar workshop to see how they can support their child through the revision and exam process. Some fantastic tips and techniques, all taught in a fun way. Thanks to Joe for bringing such energy to the workshop and inspiring our learners.

Virtual World In the last few weeks we have been working on a range of ideas. We have created a survey that we hope to send out to the current cohort 7s. From this we will obtain how safe they feel online and also the extent of their knowledge on internet safety. We are exploring alternative methods that we can teach them about certain dangers online in the most effective way.
Virtual World Wellbeing Attributes
Earlier on this week I met with a teacher, from London, and a few other learners from different years. She was hoping to introduce iPads to her school and we all gave her an idea of the different ways iPads help and improve our learning Also, I have been working with Georgia, Lead Learner of Attributes, to introduce a new revision website, Seneca, to the school. We have both used this app for revision and have noticeably seen our progression and plan to present a powerpoint to the Leadership Team in the next couple of weeks. We have been quite busy in the Wellbeing team. Firstly, there is the Peer Mentoring project. The first step in this has been appointing four Peer Mentoring Ambassadors in (then) cohort 10, who would be tasked with helping us to make our project a reality. Once the Ambassadors had been appointed, we collectively launched the idea to the (then) cohort 8s in an Assembly presentation. This proved very successful, and we received around 25 applications. From these applications we then chose those who are now Honywood’s first ever Peer Mentors! Since then, the Peer Mentors have taken the challenge, and the project has been launched to cohort 7 and cohort 8 with success. After all these months of work, we are all very excited to see this project becoming a reality! Along with all this, we have been attending our regular meetings with the Leadership Team. We have also had the opportunity to take an active part in various activities throughout the school, including helping film the school prospectus (despite, in my case, having a total lack of acting skills!), welcoming visitors, and helping our colleagues in Progression present one of their projects to C11. Attributes Since returning to school in September, the Attiributes team, we have been working alongside the Virtual World lead learners to implement a new, online learning platform. We have created a presentation about how it works and how this could influence the school, we will be showing it to the Leadership Team next week. Leadership In leadership this year we have successfully completed many of the goals on our development plan. One of the first that we completed was to look at and to try and influence leadership on Cohort 7 and 8 MLA days. To do this we and the lead learners for attributes and progression assisted teachers on a cohort 8 MLA day and tried to get the learners thinking about how leadership plays a part on these days.

We also looked into how we can improve extracurricular opportunities at Honywood as well as leadership roles within them. Maryann set up the concert band, however this was not as successful as we had hoped it to be but we are going to help next years music ambassadors to try again and to set up other new music extracurricular opportunities. In recent weeks, Maryann successfully launched the new Learner Leadership Team, with some extra roles added and we are currently working on the plans for a leadership experience with the applicants to aid us in our decision, which will happen in coming weeks. Lead Learner Update
Progression: As co-lead learners of progression, Rhiannon and I have successfully gathered the ambassadors together, allocating them to their chosen date where they shall be available to complete Ambassador MLCs. The Leadership Team and us both believe this will be hugely beneficial for learning at Honywood School: younger learners can receive extra support in subjects they are struggling with and the Ambassadors can review their previous knowledge and develop it. Environment: The Environment lead learners have been looking into the results from our recent survey. From this we have started prioritising plans for the school bathrooms and possibly helping with some future events. Well done to Beth Comerford, C11 who organised a bake sale to fundraise for Children’s Burns Club which is based at Broomfield Hospital. The charity provides activities, workshops and support groups which aim to promote resilience, enhance self-esteem and increase psychological well being of burn injured patients. Thanks to all the learners who supported Beth.
Road safety education is vital to enable our learners to keep themselves as safe as possible on our roads. Road safety education encourages and supports the role that parents and carers play in helping their children to be safe road users. C9 enjoyed an informative and entertaining play as part of helping our learners to develop the behaviours and attitudes for safe road use as passengers, pedestrians, cyclists and as novice drivers.
In this country 10% of people suffering from a cardiac arrest (when the heart stops) survive and in Norway the survival rate is 25%. The difference is that all students in Norwegian schools are taught how to give emergency aid in the form of CPR (Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation). Cohort 10 learners have the opportunity to be trained in CPR. Sessions will be run by Mrs Richell and Mr Robertson for up to 10 volunteers at a time during a core PE lesson. This is fully supported by the PE Dept. You will learn the theory and then put it in to practice on equipment given to us by the British Heart Foundation, who have prepared the training package. Completion of the training is certificated and therefore something that you can include in your CV. If you are interested please let Mr Robertson know by email crobertson@honywoodschool.com
GCSE Exams 2019 Contingency Day 17th October 2018
Dear Parents/carers I would like to bring to your attention some important information concerning next year’s GCSE candidates: the Joint Council for Qualifications have announced a contingency date. A contingency date is a day specifically set aside, should sustained national or local disruption arise during the June 2019 examination series. If disruption happens, the GCSE examinations would be taken either for the first time or again on that day. The contingency date for 2019 is 26th June. Therefore learners taking public examinations should not plan to finish their GCSEs before that date or should not plan a holiday or to be at any distance from school before 27th June 2019. Additionally, our C11 leavers’ Prom is scheduled for Friday 28th June at Colne Valley Golf Club, Earls Colne, Essex. Should your son/daughter wish to attend this event then more information will be shared with families regarding this event in the near future.
