Learner Leadership

The 22nd November marked the start of the recruitment process for our Lead Learners and Ambassadors for next year. Learners who had expressed an interest attended a leadership training day, looking at the roles and structure of Learner Leadership in the school. They worked together to present their own ideas for Learner Leadership in the school following their day of training.

The next phase will be the Lead Learner applications, followed by Ambassador applications in the new year. We wish everyone luck who is applying for a role!

ver wondered what fundraising for a secondary school involves?

Spirit of Honywood is Honywood School’s PTA and is run by Russell Flanders and Stacey Lockett. Take a glimpse into the year of a Spirit fundraiser. Here Miss Lockett reflects on some of the trials and tribulations of the past year and celebrates the success of raising money and building a sense of community within our school.

“An opportunity arose early 2017 for a total rehaul of the Friends of Honywood PTA and myself and members of the technology department jumped on this. I had personally seen the purse string getting tighter and tighter for school budgets over the years I had been teaching and for me, this frustrated me. Schools have a vital job in teaching the future generations and paving the way for our youngsters to take the right steps into the world. Education is a privilege in our society and is a powerful tool, and for money to be so tight, I often felt disappointed that the financial support was lacking. Design and Technology in particular drives innovation. It builds the world around us. It is the vehicles we get around in, the buildings and the furniture we live in, the clothes we wear, the tools and machinery we use. It is the posters we read, the entertainment we enjoy, the packaging for our food and the problem solving for those with particular needs. This is just one subject, but

imagine all of the other subjects with their own requirements. Put that into the same context for PE, Science, Drama etc, and you can begin to see that providing the best experience possible can get expensive. Practicing all of these concepts authentically takes funding and more often than not, teachers can feel like they personally need to go some of the way in bridging the funding gap, supplementing resources wherever they can.

Putting my energy into the PTA meant a big deal to me. As a small team, we worked tirelessly on a revamp. Conducting market research, thrashing out branding ideas and producing a pitch that would have easily footed a £5000 marketing fee. We held meeting after meeting until we put our proposal to senior management. Spirit of Honywood was born and a logo and brand identity was selected from the 9 designs we had carefully developed.

Our first event was a massive learning curve: The Spring Fair in April 2017. We had to produce proforma’s for everything! Booking forms for traders, plans to involve the learners in Easter Egg Hunts where we held many lunchtime meetings to check progress, risk assessments. It was a huge job! The event was a real success and we made £600 from this first venture.

Our second event was the Curry and Quiz night in October 2017. Once again, the amount of work that went into the event was not expected. I personally wrote the format for the quiz and came

up with 10 rounds, using online resources to guide me and crafting a quiz suitable for the audience.

I had a quick turn around on producing tickets and unfortunately no other member of staff could support me, so I had to individually number each ticket I had designed late on a Friday after school, long after everyone had gone home. There were countless visits to Bookers in Colchester, trying to squeeze this in before the nursery closed at 6pm in time to pick up my daughter Willow. Running Spirit of Honywood often meant I was late to collect my daughter on the way back through to Sudbury where I live. On one occasion for this event, I had to collect the spice mixes for the curry from Ixworth, a frantic 2 hour round journey to get back for nursery closing. I never take expenses for the fuel I use and see this as part of my mission to make Honywood a real place for community Spirit. Myself and Mr Flanders made the Curry from scratch on the night of the event. At 5pm on that evening, I received a phone call from the nursery to tell me my daughter was unwell and I would need to collect her early!! She was an absolute angel throughout the event, and ended up crashing out in her buggy while we finished up and I cleared the hall. That night we raised £460 for Honywood School.

I felt that we needed to keep the fundraising momentum going. I stayed late on Cohort 7 parents evening, again with Willow by my side, to promote the work Spirit of Honywood does to the new intake and their families. I have sold teas, coffees and cakes at the wonderful drama performances and we had a frantic ice cream selling mission during the Performing Arts events.

There was Christmas 2017 where myself and Mr Flanders spent every evening in the run up, until the early hours of the morning, making decorations to sell at Coggeshall Christmas. The feedback from the community was so heartwarming, many were simply overjoyed to see Honywood School taking an active role in Community events. This for me was worth all of the hours of work it took to set up and the money raised was just a bonus.

At some point I dreamt up the concept of providing a space for the local community to gather monthly with the opportunity to raise more money for the school and to put our mark on the local community and to form a sense of togetherness. Myself and Mr Flanders organised

a meeting with a number of super supportive parents at the White Hart in Coggeshall during a half term, with both of our three year olds in toe. We collectively discussed my early visions for The Feel Good Fair, Coggeshall Christmas and a Bangers and Beans event. Thank you to Julie Standen, Andrea Bennett, Gillian RomanoCritchley and Kerry Ahmani-Ferdi who attended and gave their wonderful support and to Joanne who provided us with the venue!

The Feel Good Fair was planned for January 2018, and I never imagined once again how this charity work would take over my life!! In December 2017, I could often be seen trawling the cold streets of Colchester and Braintree with flyers to promote the charity event for Spirit of Honywood. Mrs Lee-Allan found myself and my daughter on one dark weekend afternoon, visiting local businesses and venues and commended us on our passion and commitment for the school. I spent 2 months hand picking local traders. I wanted the event to be about love and compassion. All items to be sold had to be vegan, packaging should be low impact and compostable wherever possible. I reached out to ethical business’ for raffle prizes and set up social media to support the work I was doing.

Before the Fair, I was very anti-mobile phones, and Willow commented “mummy, you never used to have a phone” as I spent all of my free time sending emails and making phone calls. I have had many wonderful people support our school through raffle prizes.

There have also been many, many declines for help which I have had to pick myself back up from. Trawling the streets of Braintree for hours one day resulted in only a single frying pan and a milkshake voucher for my efforts, but even this to me was a small success in fundraising for our youngsters.

Each month planning for the Fair for me is a whirlwind. Even designing monthly posters like I had originally been doing myself, putting up banners and promoting was a full time job in itself. I spend much of my free time chasing traders for bookings and providing teaching opportunities as part of a monthly theme. At one point, I had been giving up my Saturday afternoons to prep the hall to make life a little easier for the Sunday markets, again with Willow

by my side, using the table trolleys as scooters to occupy her as mummy worked. The frantic early morning panic with setting up sometimes played havoc with my nerves and also my back!!

It has been so worth it for the feedback from the community. The Feel Good Fair has over 700 followers on Facebook now. The daughter of one of our regular traders set up Zero Mkt Lnd following a similar concept to that of the Feel Good Fair. I took Willow along to visit by train to support the event dubbed “the first of it’s kind in London”, a huge event in Gloucester Road with Feel Good Fair vibes and a teaching zone just like ours. Another trader from Bury St Edmunds has also taken our lead and has set up the Vegan Christmas Market in Bury, and she says that the Feel Good Fair was her inspiration. Not only is Honywood School continuously raising money for teaching opportunities through the Fair and providing a welcoming space for the community and supporting independent traders, but it is inspiring a wave of conscious consumers outside of Coggeshall. The Feel Good Fair has been featured in Essex Life Magazine and is supported by Braintree District Council, EnForm and a number of other environmental groups. We have had volunteers offer electrical repairs, have given talks on handmade soaps and plant-based milk, bicycle repair from Mr Watts (a learners father), support on how to reduce plastic waste from Replastic, seed swaps and so much more!! I would like to provide even more opportunities like this, beyond the Feel Good Fair to support our community. I would like to thank all of the staff who have ever visited the Fair to browse the stalls, to teach, serve coffees and to set up or pack away. And to The Watts/French family who attend every month and volunteer their time, as well as their thoughts and input between each Fair. And thank you to all of the families who have also attended since January.

This is true Honywood Spirit at it’s best!!

Other events for fundraising this year have been the mini raffle, selling tickets at lunchtime for a nail bar or that aforementioned milkshake voucher. We have just had the success of the Mexican and Quiz night and we are in the middle of running our Big Prizes raffle in time for Christmas. In the last week alone we have raised around £1400.

For me, contributing to a community is so important.

It is proven that getting involved with a community is beneficial to wellbeing and I want this to trickle down to all of our families and anyone else who gets involved with Spirit. We all have a lot to learn from the working of a PTA, for the better good of our Children, ourselves, and all those we touch in the work that we do. It has been tough at times as a single parent with such a young child often involved in each event but I feel so pleased that already she has had these wonderful experiences of volunteering and giving back.

If you have been inspired and want to be a little more involved, please keep an ear to the ground and come along to our events, donate, volunteer or buy raffle tickets, ice creams… anything!! We do well as a secondary school with our fundraising but we could do even better. And the rewards for us all are massive. My own retired parents frequently buy tickets, come along to the Fair to sweep floors and do anything they can. I think they get a real sense of purpose from putting this care and energy into such a worthwhile cause. For me, the pay back is unquestionable. I feel so empowered that my time and efforts can help to support our school system, and teach valuable life lessons about how we can make a positive change. It is about charity, heart and togetherness. It is about living the best lives that we can. It is about Spirit.”

n Thursday 29th November, Honywood hosted our very own "Merry little Christmas Fair". Learners from Art and Technology have been busily making away, preparing for the event this term and what a success it was! There were handmade toast tongs, tealight holders, decorations, cards, art work, bags, lampshades and footstools amongst the amazing products produced.

The event was really well attended and visitors said how impressed they were with the quality of the work being sold and that it was a great start to the festive season.

The event was supported by great live music from James Korniej throughout the event and crafty activities making snow globes and decorations organised by the Family Learning Team, making it the perfect event for the whole family to enjoy. Our learners thoroughly enjoyed the experience of selling to real customers and we are incredibly proud of all that contributed whether through making, selling or supporting the event. Well done everyone!

Spotlight on

GCSE Music Soirée

On the 10th October learners from Cohort 9, 10 and 11 GCSE Music put on an evening of music performances showcasing the varying styles and interests that the children explore through their music studies.

Ranging from opera to rock guitar and classical cello to saxophone and drums there was something for all tastes. The evening was a magnificent success and gave the learners an opportunity to share their skills and love of music and gain confidence performing to an audience. Some performed pieces that they have been learning as part of their coursework preparation, some performed compositions of their own and others performed pieces that they simply enjoy playing. We intend to plan more evenings like this in the future so please keep an eye out for announcements.

Mercury Schools Festival

On the 5th November learners from our C9 Drama classes performed at the Mercury Theatre in Colchester as part of the ‘Mercury Schools Festival’. The learners took part in a play called ‘Untold Stories’ along with several other schools in the area. The cast performed amazingly well on the night and throughout rehearsals leading up to this. Members of the public commented on the quality of what the group delivered and praised their performances highly. Well done to all involved!!

Hard to Swallow - C10 Drama Those of you that were fortunate enough to see last year’s Cohort 10 Drama performances of ‘DNA’ and ‘Find Me’ will know that we have been challenging learners to think about drama as more than a form of entertainment. It can be something that challenges a point of view or delves deeper into a matter of hot topic, debate or shed light on matters that should be more openly discussed. This year’s play ‘Hard to Swallow’ by Mark Wheeler does just that.

“Hard to Swallow” is a play based on Maureen Dunbar’s award winning novel and film “Catherine: The Story of a young girl who died of Anorexia Nervosa”. Catherine Dunbar died in 1984 after a seven year battle against anorexia nervosa. She was 22 when she died. In her novel her mother has written an extraordinarily frank and courageous account of her daughter’s illness. She not only deals with the ways in which Catherine’s illness affected her but also the effect it had on her family and how they reacted to it. Extracts from Catherine’s diary, over the course of her illness, give the reader further insight into the psychological trauma of anorexia.

Mark Wheeller’s play uses the words from Catherine’s diaries and also of those most closely involved and affected. It can be argued that this play challenges the stereotypical views of anorexia.

People very often have pre-conceived ideas about the illness and that it occurs when someone is simply looking for attention. But this play shows the audience a family who is actually searching for answers about a condition that they know nothing about and in watching them battle with the problem, we come to realise that Anorexia affects people in different ways.

GCSE Dance helps students to develop technical and expressive skills as well as knowledge and understanding of dance through performance, choreography and critical appreciation.

Dance gives young people problem-solving skills

Working out how to create movement that fits a theme teaches them how to find a solution to a problem Working out the best exercise to improve a particular skill teaches them how to work on their own weaknesses to achieve

Dance gives young people leadership skills.

Is it easy to create movement for a group of people, design them in space, communicate what you need and rehearse them until it’s perfect? GCSE dancers do this all the time!

Leadership skills are skills that encourage innovation and success.

Leaders move up in the world.

What skills do I gain from studying Music?

• Studying music can give you a great mix of social, technical and business skills.

• Self-management is learnt in abundance as a musician.

• Will help you build your problem solving, research, planning, analytical and critical thinking skills, as well as develop your creativity.

• Not to mention discipline, composure under pressure, time management, communication, team and individual working ability - all gained from practice and performing.

• You might also learn technical skills through using computers, equipment and software to create and record music.

What skills to I gain from studying Drama?

Of course if you love the arts and acting then drama is right for you but what if you want a different career?

Why do you think the top universities want students that have the skills that drama gives you the opportunity to develop?

No subject teaches you how to work well in a team quite like Drama.

Drama will allow you to develop your patience, ability to compromise and communication skills.

You will learn discipline.

It’s not so much about acting as being aware of your body language and how to adapt to distracting, uncomfortable or sensitive situations.

In Drama you will be asked to improvise on a number of occasions. This allows you to think on your feet, develop your initiative and will encourage you to be more proactive.

Drama stimulates you to be constantly creative.

Drama will force you to regularly come up with exciting, functional and convincing ideas, to a deadline and this ability will stay with you.

Empathy is a really important life skill. When you act in Drama you put yourself in to another person’s shoes and try to identify with them and their situation. This will really test your empathy, especially when portraying a character who is experiencing things you cannot personally relate to. This is an invaluable skill that will open your mind, improve the way you interact with people and is especially useful if you are considering a career in caring, teaching or social work.

Analysing Drama productions allows you to develop your critical thinking skills. This is useful for a number of jobs and is great if you are planning on taking English Literature, Media Studies or Film Studies at degree level.

You will gain in confidence. This is a really important one because Drama gives you the opportunity to push yourself to perform. You will be able to grow in confidence, develop your performance skills and overcome the fear of making mistakes in a fun, creative and supportive environment.

It was an absolute privilege to watch our C10 GCSE Drama learners as they performed the play "Hard to Swallow" by MarkWheeller. An emotional, hard hitting play about a family and their daughter, Catherine and her battle with anorexia. The learners performance was outstanding; they performed with passion, emotion and sensitivity to this topic and true story. Well done to everyone who was involved in the production and to Miss Weller for all her work with this very talented group of youngsters

The performance gave me an interesting and thoughtful insight into life with an illness like anorexia in a compelling and thought provoking way. The stylised scenes emphasised the message of the performance and flowed seamlessly into more naturalistic scenes. The staging was minimalistic yet showed great care through how the staging played into the performance like when we saw a conveyer belt of repeating actions of a clinic that was stylised in a way that displayed just how monotonous and repeated processes like being in a hospital can be for many and emphasised really well how Catherine felt hospitals were failing her. There were also great moments of intensity and emotional climax like when a table was pushed over. The performances of the Cohort 10’s in the naturalistic and stylised scenes shone and brought the story to us as an audience; I could really feel the emotions on their faces.

The metaphor at the start of the performance encapsulated how the feelings of being trapped and torn in her ‘pen’ with trolls. The story of Catherine is a heart-wrenching one, and I feel the performance may have broken many of the preconceived ideas about anorexia. A huge well done to the Cohort 10’s.

C11 MOC M

onday 12th November marked the beginning of the mock exam period for Cohort 11 Learners.

During this period, all learners experienced examinations under exactly the same conditions that they can expect when they begin their final GCSE examinations in the summer of 2019. For many, enduring three weeks of mock exams may seem nothing more than a cruel and unnecessary process, simply adding to the stress and pressure that they already feel. However, it is important to look at the benefits of going through such an experience.

P

ressure and stress can affect us all in different ways. For some, it can cause anxiety, frustration and silly mistakes, which will ultimately culminate in poor exam performance. For others, pressure can actually sharpen focus, improve concentration and accuracy, and therefore lead to better performance. If the final GCSE exams in the summer of 2019 are the first time that learners experience these conditions, it is lottery as to how they will react. Hence, mock exams are a great opportunity for learners to figure out, prepare, and practice what works best for them.

P

rocrastination is an arch enemy of the GCSE assessment process. How many learners, and their families, can admit to feeling that the summer exams are still so far away that there is plenty of time to worry and start preparing later? In

an article written for The Guardian in 2015, the author of one of the biggest studies on procrastination, research Piers Steel, was cited with the statement ‘the further away an event is, the less impact it has on people’s decisions’. The article went on to explain that, in essence, summer exams feel like a lifetime away for teenagers so some will only really start working hard for them after Easter. By having mock exams halfway through the year, learners have the opportunity to focus their attention and effort earlier. They can help learners to start revising early, to practise effective revision strategies, to improve their knowledge, to familiarise themselves with pressure, and act as a guide moving forward.

ur approach to the mock exam period was therefore focused on making the experience as authentic and real for our learners as possible.

Learners know their candidate numbers, the rules of the exam hall, the intensity and frequency with which the exams occur during a short period of time. As the mock period draws to a close, learners will now wait to receive their results on our official Mock Results Day on Friday 11th January – which falls a little short of the eight weeks that learners will have to wait to receive their results on 22nd August 2019!

On 8th November, we welcomed back our leavers from summer 2018 to see them receive their GCSE certificates in front of family and friends. It was a lovely evenin and we were delighted to see our former Learner, Ed Clark, return to give the main addr spoke about his journey since leaving Honywood through A levels and his degree, including a year abroa France.

After the formal part of the evening, it was wonderful t the learners and families stay for the refreshments to staff and each other. Good luck to our leavers as t to their next adventures. Stay in touch!

C11 District Football Cohort 11 made it through to the District Football Final by winning a close game against Notley High in the semi final. Both teams played good football and it was Honywood who were victorious late in the second half making the score 4-3. Honywood play against Ramsey in the final on 13th December.

District Cross Country Well done to all our learners who were selected and took part in the District Cross Country at Notley Country Park.

C7 Netball Well done to our C7 netball team. They drew 9-9 to Anglo European on 14 November.

Josh Ambrose Congratulations to Josh Ambrose (11MRa) who has been selected to play football for Essex Under 16s. He took part in their South East Counties Youth Championship fixture away to London on the 11th November. The Essex boys fought back from 2-0 and 3-1 deficits to claim a 4-3 victory deep into stoppage time.

On Saturday 24th November, Josh was again selected to play against Norfolk and put Essex ahead in the first minute with a great goal. Sadly Essex didn’t go on to win the match but played with great spirit and determination. Well done Josh - keep up the good work.

Finley Petts Congratulations to Finley Petts (7FJo) who won a host of medals swimming for Braintree and Bocking Swimming Club at their Christmas Cracker Gala last weekend. He came away with a total of 9 medals - 4 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze. One of his gold medals was for his 50m Butterfly swim where his winning time qualified Finley for the East Region event next year. He also won the trophy for the most points scored in the gala for his Under 11 age group. This is a fantastic achievement for Finley and demonstrates his determination and commitment to his sport. Well done!

James Raine and Harry Plester Congratulations to James and Harry on being selected to play Rugby for the Eastern Counties U16.s

Jordan Kelly On Sunday 18th November, Jordan participated in a Yong Gi Do, Tang Soo Doo Black belt karate grading. The day consisted of a Korean written test, basic moves, forms, applications, combinations, ten fights and breaking tiles at the end. After 12 hours of hard work and determination, he received his black belt. Well done Jordan, a fantastic achievement!

James Korniej On 23rd and 24th November James Korniej played guitar as part of the Robbie Gladwell and Friends charity concerts at the Quay Theatre in Sudbury. They were raising money for West Suffolk Hospital’s My WiSH Charity to help Breast Cancer patients.

Xanthe Goodman Congratulations to Xanthe Goodman (8JLa) who, this week, received an invitation from the UK Polocross Under 14s Player Development Pathway. This is a great achievement for Xanthe and means she will be coached by the UK Squad coaches with a view to playing internationally. Well done Xanthe!

Former Honywood Learner - Oli Stammers Oli Stammers left Honywood in the summer of 2017 to pursue his passion for horse racing. He attended Newmarket British Racing School for a shortened period due to his prior experience spent in Ireland as an apprentice jockey. Oli was then offered a full time apprenticeship at Johnston Racing under the owner Mark Johnston. Since joining he has gone from strength to strength racing at various courses around the UK and we are following his career closely. Just this week, Oli rode another winner at Southwell course! He is having an incredible year, and we are immensely proud of his achievements.

Saturday 24th November, saw a group of 19 committed youngsters arrive early at school for a lovely morning, attempting to navigate around the local area.

Over the past few weeks, this years Duke of Edinburgh's award participants have been refining their map and compass skills in preparation for two weekend expeditions in March and June 2019.

For some, this will have been their first time without electronic guidance (Google maps etc), but I am pleased to report that they all demonstrated a high level of competence.

Through effective communication, discussion, decision making the whole

group enhanced their knowledge and appreciation of "old fashioned" methods, as one learner put it!

Whilst some of the clothing and footwear was more suited to wandering around the shops at 'Freeport', their appreciation and respect of the countryside could not be questioned. We even managed to observe a herd of beautiful Fallow Deer!

It was a pleasure spending the morning with the group and a valuable team building exercise, despite the mud!

Each day is different. Nothing ever happens twice!

If you had to teach a class one thing, what would you teach them?

Art is something you can get better at with practice. It really is true! Practice more often and you will begin to problem solve and get better at what you are doing. It is the same as riding a bike, playing a musical instrument or learning to play a sport.

Have you ever met anyone Famous?

Mark Charnock who plays Marlon Dingle in Emmerdale lives in the town I grew up in and I used to serve him all the time when I worked in Waitrose. Vivienne Westwood was also at my Art degree graduation.

What’s the most recent app you’ve downloaded?

Procreate - I have been experimenting with digital drawing!

What’s your favourite line from a film? “ Dobby never meant to kill. Dobby only meant to maim or....seriously injure” Harry potter and the Deathly Hallows part one If you could only travel to one other country, which country would you choose?

What’s your favourite family tradition?

My family have a holiday house in Norfolk and every summer we go on holiday together. There is usually so many of us that we pitch tents in the garden as well and we spend the holiday at the beach eating lots of ice cream!
