Embrace Equity

Imagine an equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated.

On Wednesday it was International Women’s Day; a day that highlights the remarkable achievements of women from all corners of the world, inspiring us to aim higher and achieve greater things. As we commemorate this day, it is important to acknowledge the significance of women in our lives and the positive impact they have made on us. Mrs Bansropun has led an excellent set of assemblies this week to highlight the importance of striving to embrace equity. Whilst the theme of international women’s day was the backdrop, equity is something that permeates all parts of society.

It was great to hear Mrs Bansropun unpick the difference between equality and equity. As one of our core values, I have spoken about equity quite a lot in the past.

Let’s start with a basic definition of each word.

Equality means each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities.

Equity recognises that each person has different circumstances, and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome.

A bit like the diagram below.

Mrs Basropun illustrated this through a simple scenario of someone being hungry:

“Imagine that you are babysitting two children, and they are hungry. You go to the fruit bowl, and you start to pick up two apples to give them to each child. However, you remember at the last moment that one of the children is allergic to apples. Instead, you reach for one apple and one banana, and that way you’re being fair, you still give one piece of fruit to each child, but you’re also being equitable because you’re giving each child a legitimate way of satisfying their hunger. If you had gone for two apples, the child who’s allergic to the apple would on the surface have a way to satisfy their hunger, but they couldn’t do that without getting ill. In this way you’re being fair, you’re giving each child a piece of fruit but, you’re also giving them something that is in line with their individual needs so they can be successful.”

Mrs Bansropun then educated us about the history of women’s football and the debt that is owed to the Women’s game after a 50 year ban by the FA. It was a great illustration of equity.

Have a lovely weekend

National Careers Week

This week has also been National Careers Week. A one-week celebration of careers guidance that aims to help support young people develop awareness and excitement about their future pathways.

There have been some excellent enrichment activities taking place across the school to bring subjects to life. These include a visit to the Royal Opera House to see a ballet; a visit to Colchester Institute Braintree Campus to learn about careers and courses in video game design, esports and film; and a cooking workshop at school. These activities have certainly ignited conversations about where subjects can lead to.

World Book Day

It was so great to see everyone embrace

World Book Day last week. Those that came to school as a character from their favourite book really looked the part. We extended this to staff and I am pleased that so many embraced it too. We had Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Where’s Wally, Harry Potter and many more books represented. The day was a real success and I would like to extend my thanks to everyone that supported it. The aim of the day is to raise the profile of books and reading. The evidence is quite clear on this - regular reading makes a difference to academic performance.

Uk Harvest

We were really lucky to have a visit this week from Sarah and Sian from UK Harvest for a brilliant Food and fuel workshop with some Cohort 7 & 8 learners. We made use of air fryers to cook a delicious veggie burger and chips, learning about how to be fuel efficient, cost effective and reduce food waste along the way. The learners involved were fantastic, and seemed to very much enjoy sampling their meals!

C7 District Cup Football

Our C7 footballers played two games this week in the District Cup.

Ramsey 2 Honywood 1

The first game was away to Ramsey Academy on Wednesday. The weather was not kind with sleet falling throughout the match. The boys played well in the conditions and were unlucky to let in a goal with only 90 seconds remaining in the match. Honywood’s goal came courtesy of Luc Sykes following an assist by Stanley Moxham.

Rickstones 3 Honywood 2

On Thursday we travelled to Rickstones for our second game. Again the cold rain continued throughout the match. The boys played well especially in the first half when they put the Rickstones goalkeeper under intense pressure but could not find a way through. Honywood found themselves 2-0 down and showed great determination to get something out of the game. They were rewarded with two goals - the first by Stan Pyne assisted by Hadleigh Perkins and the second a great free kick by Riley Preston. Honywood were unable to hold on and Rickstones scored the winner.

Still all to play for in our remaining matches. Well done to all the boys who played.

Coggeshall Parish Council were in school today to ask our learners about the local play park. They really want to create an area that teens will enjoy while balancing nature too. Everyone in the community can pop along to the Village Hall from 5:30pm this Monday 13th to participate in the consultation too.
