Mark was born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1966, the fifth of six sons. He grew up in Boynton Beach, Florida, and attended the University of Florida earning a B.A. in Spanish and an M.Ed. in Foreign Languages Education. He later earned an M.Ed. in Instructional Technology from Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts. In 2010 he lives with his husband, Tom, and works as a Technology Integration specialist in a public school district in a Boston suburb.

How I became interested in genealogy It’s kind of odd that I’ve devoted so much time and effort into researching the history of the RICHARD/ FRANÇOIS family since my closest RICHARD relative was my great, great grandmother “Texas” RICHARD whom I never knew. But when I was a boy, I remember my mother saying that her mother said that we were descended from nobility or royalty through the RICHARDs, her mother’s side of the family. That piqued my curiosity at a young age, and stayed with me. That, and the fact that my mother always used the correct French pronunciation of the name even though she knew no French.

But my research actually started with the family of my mother’s father, the FERNETYs. Mom had always said that her great uncle, a Capuchin priest named Father Jacques HADDAD, was revered in his native Lebanon almost as a saint, a kind of Mother Teresa figure. Surely I’d be able find information on such a well-known figure. And, sure enough, I did. My second great uncle, the man born Khalil HADDAD in 1875 in Lebanon, was beatified in 2008 at a ceremony attended by tens of thousands of people in Beirut. Beatification is the step before becoming a saint in the Catholic Church.

Digging a bit more, I found a buried family that story that almost mirrored in evil the saintly acts of Father (now “Venerable”) Jacques. Father Jacques’ sister, Rosa HADDAD, was my great grandmother. My mother described Rosa as a saintly figure in her own right. Mom grew up with grandma Rosa living with them in their Jacksonville home. Mom never knew her grandfather, Rosa’s husband Joe FERNETY, and his name was never mentioned. After much digging, I found out why. Joe was a hard-drinking, hard-living, womanizing sheriff who abandoned Rosa and their children, ran off with and married another woman while still married to Rosa. His second wife soon left him, returning to her hometown of Terre Haute, Indiana. Joe tracked her down. Returning home from church choir practice one night, Joe shot and killed her, then turned the gun on himself.

Now, I reasoned, if Mom’s story about Father Jacques panned out, and since I was able to uncover this other horrible yet true family story, maybe I could find the elusive RICHARD family link to nobility. This book is the result of that search.
