Thank you for your interest in our program. We’d like to invite you to our Annual Bull Sale on February 10th, 2024. Where we are Offering 60 coming-two-year-old virgin bulls. Please come early, have coffee and donuts, and view the bulls. Stay for the sale and lunch and get a feel for how we are doing things differently here than the many Bulls selling across the U.S. this year.
The bulls are available for inspection the morning of the sale and anytime prior. Videos are available on our website at Keyesangus. com or Liveauctions.TV . Give Frank or me a call with any questions or for a tour of the bulls and Ranch.
First, let me say I think you will find that we have a set of bulls that will go out and work in about any environment. We have decided to really challenge these bulls as they grow, they are run out on range and cake and supplemented only with native hay when the range is gone in the winter. They are grazed and rotated throughout the ranch during the summer in large pastures. We feel that growing bulls this way helps them stay sound and develops good feet and the ability to go out and travel.
With the rising cost of inputs, we feel it is especially important to develop cattle that can work and thrive in a commercial type of environment with minimal inputs to help maximize the profit at the end of the year. To use a sports analogy, I would say that we are developing linebackers instead of line men, we want these bulls to be fit and hard and stay working throughout the breeding season which is the reason we have chosen to develop them in the way we have.
The bulls that do not fit this program are not pulled out and fed or pampered to be offered in the sale, they are culled and sold regardless of their pedigree. If they work, they stay. If they don’t, they fall out. That is how the cows are treated and so we feel we must treat the bulls the same way in order to keep the integrity of our program intact, there are no second chances.

With are move to the Sandhills, we opted for a new approach and have the Cattle work for us and not us for them. We left the feed wagon in Springfield and now we allow our bulls a second year to grow and develop. This is a deliberate approach that allows our bulls to develop slowly over time. The bulls are not pushed. Preparing them so they don’t fall apart when it comes time to work. In short, we raise the same size and weight of bull in two years as a yearling, with little fat and more muscle. Our Registered calves are raised the same as our commercial calves across the fence. RETAINED INTEREST
Keyes Angus will retain a 1/3 semen interest in all bulls in this sale.
INSPECTION OF CATTLE
Sale bulls and females will be available for inspection any time prior to the sale at Keyes Angus near Brewster, NE. EPDS IN THIS CATALOG AS OF 1/5/23
FIRST BREEDING SEASON GUARANTEE
All bulls selling for $3500 or more are guaranteed for the fist breeding season. A breeding season is defined as the 60-day period following the first turnout of the bull. If available a bull will be provided for the rest of the season. This bull may be purchased with your credit from injured bull, or you can use your credit at the next year’s sale. Your credit is the purchase price of the injured bull less salvage value. A Veterinarian must diagnose all injured bulls. Please notify us as soon as possible should injury occur and prior to the injured bull being sold for salvage. This guarantee is not for before or after the 60-day breeding season.
ALL CLAIMS MUST BE MADE BY OCTOBER 15, 2024.
TERMS & CONDITIONS
The cattle will sell under the suggested terms and conditions adopted by the American Angus Association. Except for those stated in the terms and conditions, there are no warranties, either expressed or implied, as to the merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose with respect to the cattle being sold in this auction. The warranties and guarantee set forth in the “Terms and Conditions” are in lieu of all other warranties, either expressed or implied, and the remedies provided therein shall be the sole and exclusive remedy of the buyer (or any party claiming through the buyer) or any breach of warranty or guarantee therein provided and all other obligations available at the clerk’s office sale day.
LIABILTY
All persons attending this sale do so at their own risk and Keyes Angus assumes no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents which may occur.
HERD HEALTH
All cattle selling are on a complete health program and bulls are certified to be virgin bulls. The cattle have been vaccinated and dewormed. All bulls have tested negative for BVDpi.
SEMEN TEST
Every bull in the sale will have passed a Breeding Soundness Exam (BSE), but is guaranteed to pass before you turn him out. All bulls are guaranteed to be fertile. They were tested 9/13/22.

Ear tags on all sale cattle will correspond to lot numbers in this sale book.

KEYES ANGUS our history
In 1952, Clarence Keyes sold his dairy herd and began buying registered Angus cattle from breeders in western Iowa and eastern Nebraska. He became an active member of both the Northeast Nebraska and Southeast Nebraska Angus Associations due to his close proximity to both areas of Springfield, Nebraska. One of the first Angus bulls Clarence can remember buying was from Atwater Bros. of Albion.
One of the first show sales he went to was in Otoe County, Nebraska in 1955. The bull was placed near the bottom of the class in the show, but the cattlemen found him and he was nearly the top seller of the sale.
In the early 1960’s Clarence and Beulah began selling their bulls at the Norfolk Sale Barn on the third Thursday of every May. This continued into the 1990’s with their son, Kevin. Around 2000, the development of Omaha began to noticeably make the availability of farmland more difficult, and Kevin began expanding the cow herd. Kevin and Teresa made annual trips to Minnesota to her cousin’s annual production sales at Flying W and WR Bar Ranches. Several trips were made to TC Ranch to purchase herd bulls and replacement heifers. Sending pairs out to pasture in the sandhills for the summer allowed for the expansion to today’s current numbers.
In 2020, urban sprawl gave Kevin the opportunity to relocate the herd from Springfield to Brewster.
Today, Keyes Angus is operated by Kevin and Teresa Keyes with the assistance of Frank and Suzette Utter. Kevin and Teresa’s daughters and their spouses also remain involved and are vital to the operation.
These bulls were born and raised in the Sandhills of Nebraska. After fenceline weaning in October, they were moved to river meadows and were supplemented with 16% Bull Developer Cake. In May, the bulls were rotated from pasture to pasture, with no cake fed until September. Free choice salt and mineral is always available.

Calving Ease Direct (CED) , is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.
Birth Weight EPD (BW) , expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Weaning Weight EPD (WW) , expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Yearling Weight EPD (YW) , expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Maternal Milk EPD (Milk) , is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.
Marbling EPD (Marb) , expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Ribeye Area EPD (RE) , expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from birth to weaning. The underlying objective being producers will retain 20% of the female progeny as replacements and sell the rest of the cull females and their male counterparts as feeder calves. Traits included are as follows (in no particular order): birth weight, weaning weight, milk, and mature cow weight.
Feedlot Value ($F), an index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning feedlot merit compared to the progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes producers will retain ownership of cattle through the feedlot phase and sell fed cattle on a carcass weight basis, but with no consideration of premiums or discounts for quality and yield grade. Traits contributing directly to the index are as follows: yearling weight (gain), carcass weight and dry-matter intake.
Beef Value ($B), a terminal index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning and carcass traits. This terminal index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a carcass grid. Traits included in the index are as follows: yearling weight, dry-matter intake, marbling, carcass weight, ribeye area and fat.

Combined Value ($C), an index, expressed in dollars per head, which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid.
