Capitol Angus Production Sale 2024

Page 1

Welcome

The DuVall family would like to start off, thanking our customers and fellow ranchers for your interest in our 2024 production sale. We value our relationships with each customer and ranch that we’ve established over the past several years across this great United States of America. I believe that relationships and our daily deeds are the only things we get to take to heaven, good or bad. So we want to always keep these in their right priority at Capitol Angus Ranch.

This year has been filled with several key milestones. We all have things that occur in our life that timestamp a season for us. These milestones, such as anniversaries, graduations and ranch production sales are the accumulation of hard work, persistence, vision, commitment, and God‘s blessings all wrapped up into one. It’s these milestones that serve as life’s road signs to remind you to keep going this direction, your on the right path!

This year, for the first time, we have had a third-party, the USDA, validate the performance quality of our beef company and angus seed stock program. Our last load of 21 steers that went to our USDA harvest facility all graded “Prime”. To accomplish a grade of 100% prime in the next 21 animals that were in the pipeline is a huge milestone for TexasBeef House and Capitol Angus Ranch. This was our first load of animals to take to a facility that could provide a USDA grade for our beef. Our previous USDA facility did not have a USDA grader available. We have always believed we had a good predictable high-quality beef product, but this is the first time we were able to have a third-party validate it. This milestone of producing 100% prime beef validates not only the quality of our beef but it also let us know that genetically we are on the right path with our Angus seed stock program.

As you review our bull offering, I hope you will be able to appreciate the balance and diversity of this offering. Our focus is on producing great carcass merits while keeping a balance of phenotype, growth, and calving ease blended with strong maternal traits and excellent foot scores. We believe these are the fundamentals of producing a solid dependable herd bull. We stand behind our one year Bull guarantee. We have to build them so that they’re strong, durable and don’t come back. We rarely have bulls returned because of weak feet or phenotype related injuries. Our healthy volume of return customers continually validates that Capitol Angus bulls are holding up and performing well for our fellow ranchers. This is the first year at Capitol Angus that we have taken some of our top yearling bulls and used them as sires over our herd. These bulls were really hard to let go of before capturing some of their genetic potential in our own program. You will notice several of the pregnant females offered in this sale were covered by some of our top young bulls.

For the last decade, we have been leaning heavy into our ET program producing greater than 90% of our bull offering. The female progeny from the same flushes that produced our bull offerings have been accumulated over the past 10 years and culled hard to produce a high-performing core herd of registered black Angus cows. These cows have been AI’d to the top performance bulls in the Angus herd and then covered with the best sires we could obtain. Our cover Bulls include Rhodes Doc Dre, Baldridge Guardian, HPCA Zephyr, Poss Atlantis, 2S Blitz, Linz Resilient, and our own CA Deadwood 1358, CA Deadwood 1350 and CA Premium 1166 bulls. Our female offering comes from the core of this herd. We also are selling our top donors that have produced these progeny. This female offering will be by far our best to date. To top this list, we will be offering three flush mate Y69 Isabel daughters and selling half interest in Baldridge Isabel J174, the daughter of Baldridge Isabel F047. We are also selling half interest in our donor TL Blackcap 7208 that we just purchased this year from Spring Cove Ranch. We only later found out that the contending bidder was Jud Baldridge. We believe 7208 has huge potential.

We have partnered with the CK6 consulting team to fund and develop the online auction platform, Bid on Beef. Our 3 monthly Bid on Beef auctions has allowed us to bring our beef products directly from the ranch straight to the customer. We now bypass the feedlot, packing house, and grocery stores to go directly to the consumer. Our bull and cattle production sale at 6 PM will be proceeded by an “in person” and online TexasBeef House auction at 1 pm. We will be selling a variety of 100 % prime steaks and hamburger assortments. Both the Texas BeefHouse 1 PM Auction and the Capitol Angus 6 PM production sale will be proceeded by a meal. Please come share a meal with the DuVall family and take advantage of a great opportunity to get high-quality beef both on the hoof and in the package.

God bless the USA!

WHAT ARE EPD S ?

ESTIMATED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDs) ARE A PREDICTION OF HOW A SIRE OR DAMS’ OFFSPRING WILL PERFORM COMPARED TO OTHERS. EPDs are a representation in the difference in pounds, inches, or centimeters (depending on how that trait is weighted or measured.) The EPD numbers do not correlate to an actual weight or measurement however, they are only to be used to compare against other animals EPD’s to represent the difference in genetic potential. For example, a 2.1 BW EPD does not correlate to an 85 pound actual calf. When comparing a 2.1 BW EPD bull to a 1.1 BW EPD bull you could expect a one-pound difference in actual birthweights between the two sires.

Calving Ease Direct (CED): The percentage of unassisted births of a sire when used on first calf heifers. Higher is more favorable. This is to just be used when looking for bulls to be used on heifers. We recommend an 8 or higher.

Birth Weight (BW): The difference in pounds of birth weight. In today’s production Angus genetics we find that there are not many bulls that should present calving difficulties in mature cows. The BW EPD is preferred as a selection tool more than the actual birth weight of the bull. Environment and management can change the birth weight of an animal so drastically that the EPD is a better tool. Weaning Weight (WW): The difference in pounds at weaning. Also seen as a 205 day weight in places.

Yearling Weight (YW): The difference in pounds at yearling. Also seen as a 365 day weight in places.

Milk (MK): The difference in pounds at weaning as a result of milk production of daughters. Honestly this EPD we don’t worry about unless they are in the top 5 or bottom 5% of the breed as there is little to be known about how much milk is actually being produced among the different environments and managements in the country.

Scrotal (SC): The difference in scrotal circumference in a bulls sons.

Docility (DOC): The difference in docility scores. Cattle are given scores for disposition and a higher docility is more favorable.

Carcass Weight (CW): The difference in pounds of hanging carcass weight.

Marbling (MB): The difference in the USDA marbling scores. Higher is more favorable.

Rib Eye (RE): The difference in the square inches of rib eye.

$Maternal ($M): An index (combination) of multiple EPDs that pertain to the profitability difference from conception to weaning for those retaining their own replacement females. Index’s are contrived of scenarios that don’t necessarily fit each producers management, resources, niche markets or goals. You can use index’s for quick sorts but would have you look towards the individual traits of your needs ideally.

$Beef ($B): An index (combination) of multiple EPDs that pertain to the terminal profitable difference from weaning to harvest. This index awards cattle for higher YW, CW, MB, RE, and lower Fat.

$Combination ($C): An index (combination) of index’s. This primarily is a combination of $Maternal and $Beef. This index can easily be influenced by a terminal or maternal trait and is not a true prediction of something complete or combined. In most cases it can be, but we still encourage you to look at all traits that best suit you and use $C as a quick sorting tool.

DNA Scores: Below many EPDs bars you will find a line of 18 traits (many that are abbreviated just like the EPDs above). These are DNA scores and are represented as a percentile rank within the breed (lower is more favorable.) This just shows another layer of the tools used in the decision making that goes into the more accurate EPD above. The EPD takes into account, parental information, DNA information, and weights and measurements of the actual animal.

%Ranks in EPDS: Under many EPDs you will see % ranks. That shows how that animal ranks within the breed for that trait. Example, 1.87 MB 1%, that means that animal ranks in the top 1% of the breed for MB EPD.

There are 26 different EPDs and Index’s provided by the American Angus Association. We list the EPDs and Index’s that are most pertinent to our customers to save space and time. We know some prefer more information and it is always available at www.angus.org. It the upper right-hand corner enter the animals registration number in the search bar and the entire pedigree and EPD profile is at your fingertips.
