Breeder Genetics Spring Sire Directory 2025

Page 1

WELCOME

As we present our 2025 Spring Sire Directory, we’re proud to share a line-up that represents the very best of what Breeder Genetics stands for — providing genetics that thrive in the Australian environment and adds value across the entire supply chain. Every bull has been carefully selected, inspected, and backed by genetics that drive profitability and progress.

The past six months have brought encouraging signs forward for the Australian beef industry as global meat prices have strengthened. Recent tariff settings have tilted in Australia’s favour versus key global competitors, helping lift July exports to the US and boosting 2025 North America volumes. In Asia, a rapidly expanding middle class, projected to grow from around 2 billion in 2020 to 3.5 billion by 2030 is driving stronger demand for quality beef, a trend that Australia has been, and will be well positioned to capitalise on. For the first time ever, July 2025 saw over 150,000 tons of beef exported in a single month.

On the domestic front, cattle markets have maintained a steady tone through winter, with saleyard prices trending higher despite seasonal fluctuations across the eastern seaboard. While seasonal variability has influenced management decisions in many regions, the south has benefited from timely rainfall, driving pasture growth and kickstarting herd rebuilding efforts.

Processor demand has remained firm, particularly for well-finished slaughter cattle, while feeder markets have lifted as lotfeeders are positioned for strong grain fed supply programs heading into summer. The message is clear, the conditions are set for opportunity, and a rising tide lifts all boats!

With this positive backdrop, the focus turns to sires that can add value where it counts. This spring, we unveil a new bull from the US, Henke Honcho , a structurally elite, deep, long bodied and wide-based sire, combining calving ease, growth, and fertility with exceptional foot and leg structure, backed by generations of proven, long-lived cows. We also introduce our first Brangus sire, MSC Blanton 889K7 , a true phenotypic standout and complete all-rounder combining calving ease, high growth, positive fats, marbling, big ribeye in a structurally sound package. The Autumn season was dominated by the 2024 American semen sales leader, Basin Keystone 2021 and Australia’s new star that redefines phenotype and genotype, Cluden Newry Uppercut U15.

Our sires, shaped by global insights and experiences, are prepared to address the constant evolving demands of Australian beef production. As we enter the Spring 2025 season, our mission remains clear: For Breeders, By Breeders.

Cheers, Jack Laurie

We are committed to advancing the industry and continually improving breeding outcomes, ensuring that our clients achieve long-term success within their operations.

MATURE BODY COMPOSITION

Each year, Angus Australia advances the genetic evaluation by updating the TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation (TACE). For 2024, this includes the addition of two new traits: Mature Cow Height (MCH) and Mature Cow Body Condition (MBC). Previously categorised as research breeding values, these traits are now full Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs). The heritability of these traits is 0.51 for MCH, 0.21 for MBC, and 0.43 for Mature Cow Weight (MCW), demonstrating that genetic selection can drive meaningful change.

Importantly, these three traits are genetically correlated. MCW is highly correlated with both MCH (0.83) and MBC (0.87), while MCH and MBC have a weak correlation of 0.21. This means that cows can achieve similar weights through different combinations of height and body condition. This is especially important when selecting sires, as it highlights the need to look beyond weight alone and consider the balance between frame size and body condition.

Historically, carcass Rib & Rump Fat EBVs have long been used as a proxy for selecting softer, easier-fleshing females with additional fat cover. MBC EBVs now provide a trait specifically designed for this selection pressure. The correlation between MBC and carcass Rib & Rump Fat EBVs is weak, at 0.3 and 0.19 respectively, indicating that while there is some genetic relationship, these traits uniquely describe different aspects of fat composition. If your breeding objective is to influence the body condition score of mature females, the MBC EBV is the most direct and effective tool for driving that change.

BASIN KEYSTONE 2021

• Keystone sold for a valuation of $202,500 USD as the topseller for Basin Angus in the spring of 2023 selected by Lyle Weiss from Pine Creek Angus Ranch in South Dakota. Later in the year, his full sister sold as the $70,000 USD top-valued bred heifer of the phenomenal 2023 Basin Angus female sale.

• Dam, Joy 9140 recently sold for $240,000 USD and is also the mother of the $600,000 USD Basin Jameson. Sire, Step Up 9178, has consistently stood out as a leading sire group during recent visits to America. Keystone unites Basin Angus’ most valuable cow families, the Joy’s and Lucy’s, with his great granddam, Basin Joy 1036, renowned as the dam of the female making sire, Basin Rainmaker 4404. Keystone anchors an elite line of outstanding females.

• Keystone is a mid-maturity pattern bull, exhibiting exceptional volume and mass with a very docile nature. He is long-bodied, smooth-fronted, deep-bodied, and structurally correct, with a strong foot structure. As ORIgen’s top-selling semen sire for 2024, Keystone delivers the performance, maternal power, and a data set essential for modern breeding programs.

HENKE HONCHO

• The standout young sire from our June 2025 US trip and easily one of the most complete bulls we inspected. Honcho demands attention for his sire appeal, Angus character, and combination of length, growth, and functional build.

• He was the top seller at the 2024 Henke Angus sale, selling to Baldridge Angus, where he has since been used heavily. Upon inspection, his foot shape and depth is ideal, as well as his angle and set to his hock. He moves with impressive ease and agility and has a calm, easy-going nature.

• His great-granddam lived to be nearly 16 years of age, and his granddam is still active as an 11 year old. His dam, Blackbird 0215, had Honcho as a first calf heifer, but sadly passed unexpectedly after her second heifer calf, who has been retained in the herd. Note, top 10% for Teat, top 25% for Udder and top 25% for Functional Longevity. See pages 25-26 for more details.

• Honcho’s pedigree is stacked with proven maternal and performance sires, and we expect his daughters to reflect the same maternal strength, especially udder quality, as seen in the Blackbird cow line. His width, structure, and muscle expression, matched with his longevity and maternal backing, make him a unique prospect this season.

Double bred to the renowned cow-maker Rainmaker 4404, True Value is expected to sire exceptional daughters.

TIMES INSPECTED 1

AMERICAN MATERNAL EPDS

In May of 2025 the American Angus Association released 3 new maternal EPDs, Functional Longevity (FL), Teat Size (TEAT) and Udder Suspension (UDDR) to better describe maternal traits within Angus cattle.

FUNCTIONAL LONGEVITY

Functional Longevity (FL) is a key maternal trait indicating a cow’s ability to remain productive in the herd. The FL EPD predicts the number of calves an animal’s daughters will produce by six years of age, with higher values reflecting greater longevity. Data included in the evaluation are from females from ages 2 to 10 years old born after 1990 who calved as a 2-year-old female. Despite being lowly heritable (0.09), it is based on over 8.7 million records!

TEAT SIZE AND UDDER SUSPENSION

Teat Size (TEAT) and Udder Suspension (UDDR) are both scored are on a scale from 1 to 9, where a score of 1 represents a very large and misshapen teat, or a very pendulous udder, while a 9 indicates a very small teat size or a very tight udder. Ideally, cows are assessed within 24 hours of calving, and over 180,000 records have now been collected for the development of TEAT and UDDR EPDs.

These EPDs predict the teat and udder structure of a sire’s daughters, with higher values indicating smaller teats and improved udder suspension. The traits have a high genetic correlation (0.77), and both teat size and udder suspension are moderately heritable at 0.32 and 0.28, respectively. While higher scores generally represent improved structure, balance should be prioritised over extremes.
