Slow Pedal South
Why travel on a bicycle? What’s the point? You can get there faster in a car, or by airplane, or train. You spend all day pedalling against the wind, cursing the dust and the hot sun. You kneel in the dirt by the side of the road and change your third flat tire of the day, or fix the umpteenth broken spoke. Why put ourselves through all this? Well, here are some possible answers:
Maybe it’s not about the destination, but rather about how you get there.
Maybe it’s about how the easiest way is not always the best way.
It’s about listening to the wind in wide open, empty places, and looking up at the top of a mountain pass to find a deer silently regarding you.
It’s about the thrill of really living, of knowing that at this moment, this instant, there is truly nowhere else in the world you would rather be.
It’s about the satisfaction of knowing that you did this, under your own power, with your own legs, and realizing that you are strong and more in touch with the world around you than those poor souls in their cars can ever be.

The trail follows the Warburton Highway up into Yarra Junction. Once Australia’s busiest timber centre it is now a charming township on the Little Yarra River. The town features a large recreation reserve, community markets, eateries, accommodation and the Upper Yarra Museum. The museum is located in the original Lilydale Railway Station building, built in 1882, located right next to the trail.

Cross bridges over the Little Yarra River into the floodplain and travel through diverse farmlands with magnificent views to the mountains of the Yarra Ranges National Park. The trail is edged by tall gums and revegetated areas. The Wesburn wetlands attract a variety of water birds and the Millgrove timber mills are a reminder of the past.
