Preface

I believe that the strength of the design projects here in The Art School grows from the way in which one subject matter informs another. It's a kind of cross-pollination. Primarily, students are benefited from each other during brainstorming, discussion and sharing. In a longer term, the process starts in our school and continues in design business, to the culture of the city. Having been engaged in the programme for three years, we accept change and the need to respond as an immutable ?aw. Browse these pages. We have created them in the hope that you will discover unconventional and imaginative ways of combining colour, photographs, illustrations, type, layout, paper, printing techniques to create fresh and visually arresting communications. This book not only presents and explores their design and transformation process, but also reflects their passion and commitment in graphic design.

設計現在給我萬能的感覺好像現今社會上世界上甚麼事與物裡都包含設計的原素在內

設計在這個時間內是不可缺少的如果沒有設計的社會 ? 人們的生活是甚麼都很難估計呢?

所以在我的國度內設計是有很大的影響力

而自己學習設計到工作

S都認為設計不是~ 件死物

而是有生命的如果設計者沒有給予設計物的生命 "它"就而失去設計的意義設計的本義除了完成它本身的工作它本身都應該有設計者的力量存在這個想法就是讀了這課程的我現時的想法

設計的力量總被人忽視，

而我自己不停地想自己本身想用設計做什麼呢？如果只是為了金錢 ? 我們這些設計師根本不用設計 ? 因為現在的世界裡因做設計而名成利就的設計師也不足二三百人 ? 所以設計不會給我們帶來物質的歡樂 ?

而我們可以倣的只是不停追問我們自己可以為設計做什麼呢？

我希望每個設計者也會不停問自己這個問題 ■?*

At this moment, design gives me sense of invincibility. It is just like our society; almost everything has some kind of design element within them. Design is inseparable in our times;

just imagine a society without designÿ what kind of lives will be living in? Therefore, in my opinion,

design has a very great impact to us. As for me, from learning about design and putting it in practice,

I believe design is not an object, instead it is aliveÿ y\ If a designer does.jlot provide life to what he or she designs, "IT" loses its meanirtg. Design is not just to finish the project itself, but also have the energy that is given by the maker within; and it is the very thing I've learnt from this course. j

witting by the window, Isee the same landscape but different sky. After my threeyear studying in the Art School, I realized ?at a different education method could indeed enormously change a person mind. "Cloud" represents my learning history in the art sdiod:? used to be a bulky cloud shadowing my own sky. i desired learning something new. The feeling encourages me to step into the next level of my professional. I have dropped down the rain and became as light as air. Driven by the air blast and climbing to the upper sky, i receive the sunlight and refract it to different colors. Now, with my eyes opened, and ！have leamt more and gone further.

我邋記得遊學到歡洲的齎地體驗，親眼看到對藝術發展有代表性的真跡，如大衛像、維納斯女神和 Red blue Chair 等，一一都讓我更深體會到藝術和生活之間的關令我的信念更強。係之深，

Design itself is a part of the life. It brings harmonious. To implement this thought with all the design theory is my mission, and my deepest experience in these years. Today, I pay attention to design purpose and try to come up with a complete and reasonable design system before developing ideas into visual communication.

I still remember my study trip in Europe, I visited and "experience" those significant masterpiece like Michelangelo's "David", Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus", Gerrit Rietveid's "Red Blue Chair" etc. Each of them strengthens my faith that art and life are inseparable.

沒有不變的東西，我信。變好變壞變多變少變幻莫測。對設計：認識、基礎變深了：興趣、熱誠、渴求變濃了；變寬變廣了。思考的角度、方式變多了；視野，對自己：多了看書，看到自己的不足；多了信心，少了疑惑的時間；多了追求，追求知識的增長；多了堅持，少了妥協的掙扎。最重要的改變 Impossible變多了一點點，成了 "ÿM POSSIBLE" 窮則變，變則通，我信。

Changes can be good or bad or more or less...thousands of possibility.

“想今日為別人去做

，希望能做到幫助別人 ?

It's now Thursday night 24 hours before I have to hand in this writing. Under a soft yellow light, I sit before the desk, gazing at an old toy left by a colleague 4 years ago. I feel tranquilly. I pull the handle of the toy to make it turns. Watching its motion, memories flash back In the past, I worked for others. I just thought of disappointing no one. In the past, I did what I liked. I do things from my own point of view. In the past, when result was not good, I felt unhappy. In the past, I regarded my success as only by chance. I had no confidence. In the past, I thought being beautiful means good. In the past, ? felt unhappy. These were the thoughts that used to form my design ideas!

NowWhen I work for others, I want to be really helpful. I still do what I like, but under the circumstances that do not disturb others. When the result is not good, I will not feel depress as I know this is only a small part of my life. When success comes to me, I will take a rest to enjoy it. I think beautiful may not be good. I feel happy. These are the thoughts that formed my present design ideas! The toy was left unconsciously. Changes occur unconsciously.

course has given me valuable insights into a variety of design subjects and issues, equipping me for the challenges that lie ahead. From a design point of view, every object has its unique beauty. Appreciating it from different perspectives breeds endless steam of imagination.

Through completing this course, I have developed the attitude to observe carefully, think thoroughly, attempt confidently and commit wholeheartedly. Such attitude will certainly be very helpful in my future endeavor. Be it in my career or my life.

從美學角度來看，每一樣東西也有它們不同的層面和角度只要肯多加探索和發掘，自然發現不同層面和角度也有不同的美亦能給我無窮無盡的想像空間。

Parent & Child Relationship

改變對我來? ，改變是事與事之間的不同。在我的設計中，每一件設計作品都有它的改變不是一個輕易出現的詞語。概念和製作過程，並非?改變就能馬上改變的。所修改設計有時候會誤改其意義，甚至糟蹋其存在價值。以無論設計還是修改，都必先考慮清楚該如何處理，其用處、效果、和將會起到的影響。設計若缺乏這思考過程，其內容將完全改變。在設計人生中有很多的「改變」，踏入這行業，發覺事情每分每秒都在改變。好處是專業知識得以不斷增長，壞處是不能捉緊改變中的一?那。

改變對每個人的成長都是不可少的，無論是生活還是工作，關鍵是個人的思想和改變方向。

Change For me, change is the alteration from one form to another. Change is not to be taken lightly. Every element designed has its own process and meaning. When a design simply works but a decision of change is made, it is fundamentally wrong. Design is not easy, in fact very difficult. When amended, a design work's essential meaning may be sometimes misinterpreted. Even worse, the value of it may be spoilt. Therefore, before and during working on the design, you must fully consider things such as: how to do it or amend it; what will be the result after amendment; where it is used; and what your design objective is. Without such, your work's meaning is easily altered. You may encounter many changes in your design career. Ever since getting in this field of profession, I have realized that things are changing every single second. On the good side, you gain professional knowledge gradually; on the other, you simply get lost in the ever changing environment. Change is inevitable to everyone, both in one's career and life. The main point is, you get the right direction of change.

Wong Wing Sze

Design: a liking turned into love; an occupation turned into a mission I have gained much knowledge about design through these days of learning. My teacher impressed me most with passion and persistence. I graduately felt the charisma and influential power of design, and learned how to appreciate others' work.

I have learned that there are many possibilities in design. I earn a lot in experiments and enjoy a lot through failures. I now believe that design can change the world and improve our lives. This is the mission of a designer after all. With the course coming to

an end, I find myself making a new start. The last course "How far can we go?" gave me a new perspective, letting me see design in a much

wider spectrum than ever before.

設計於我 ÿ 從喜歡到熱愛

，由一份職業變成一份使命

經過這段日子的摸索和學習，我學到不少知識，但更珍貴的是感

我亦體會到設計的魅力和影響力，受到導師對設計的熱誠和堅持。

far can we go?ÿ 很有意思。設計的實用意義遠比想像

中廣闊，我從此開闢了新的視點。

去年十一月，終於把從荷蘭帶會來的 160棵鬱金香球根，下種在新。為了在香港的氣候也有冷凍期，它們已經霸佔了達兩個月之久，再配合新買的花泥和肥料，定時冰箱長我三份一個澆水和悉心呵護，好不容易終於等到一棵嫩芽冒出頭來，就一心期待著這些鬱金香開得一片燦爛的樣子。買回來的花盆中

然而，隨著日子過去，這芽並沒有如期成長，反而被寄生物纏上，枯死了。其他球根也沒有動靜，似是對這泥土上的世界興趣杳杳 ..... 好生失望之餘，也就由他去吧。而且不祗一棵，所有球誰知在某個早晨，在花盆裡又看見了綠色。土上佔了自己的位子，擁擁擠根都長出芽來。一棵一棵小小的在泥雖然它們形擠，有點像小學生一起旅行似的，嘰哩哇啦的在閒聊。狀、顏色和生長速度都大有差別，卻通通都是我的鬱金香。差異，祗讓它們更有自己的個性。

在這四年的全職?學生涯中，深深的體會到 ?育的責任和使命感，同時也學會包容和堅持，縱使多疲累都不放棄。 to all my students

When asked to give out an after thought to this year grad students, I have a mix of blessing. I want to thank all of the students and teaching staffs for having the great opportunity to share, to learn and to pass on the creative knowledge of what we call design in these couple years. Being a teacher is not as easy as simply passing one's knowledge to others. A teacher must have the ability to relate to students, to built up trust, to create confidence, to encourage, to instill idea, to tolerate fault and sometime entertain. In design education, there are endless materials arid knowledge to compile. As a design history teacher myself, there are numerous of "isms" to shape our contemporary design and they are only a book-minded skill and waiting for us to experiment and venture. During these fruitful and painful years there are open minds skill students have created along these year among themselves. Ttiis is what I define the attitude towards design, this is where you cannot learn from a book, but students have gained and discovered these element through design education. They may be quite informal, but they sure worth for all of us to remember because these are our valuable learning experience. Allow me to present "The New Isms of Design" in my special poor Chinese and English, and pardon for my grammar and spelling mistake.
