Repetition, stillness, and rhythm are essential elements in my work; each painting is my yearning for the harmony of order and beauty. Mechanical scoring on paper invokes a strong feeling of precision to achieve a compositional balance. The gesture of rubbing coffee residue and natural mineral pigments on paper using my body temperature, skin and the pressure of my fingers alone to control the tonal movement in color is for me, an intimacy between my body, mind, paper and the medium. The sound and scent, as well as the feeling, is therapeutic, meditative and liberating.

Ghost
Why do animals suffer from humans’ wrong doing? Ever since I learnt about these facts, I felt responsible. I made a drastic change in my lifestyle. I am now going to the beach, not for sunbathing, but to clean up, or else I would be diving head first into the sea to recover more trash and nets. Art stems from living, and I choose to spend my days with those forgotten, to understand the connection between these trash/resources, nature and human beings. This process filled with frustration, anger, doubt, sorrow and gratitude, and I used art to record this journey. These abandoned fishing nets were given the name “ghost nets” to imply their silent killer nature. According to FAO and UNEP, more than 640,000 tonnes of nets were lost in the sea every year, Trapping and suffocating countless marine animals. The ghost nets installed here were retrieved from Hong Kong waters by a team of volunteers this year on April Fool’s Day. However, It was not a joke that I find funny at all. I am an art student, but I am also a diver, a Hong Kong citizen, a daughter, a consumer. I speak to you through my art, but that will not be all that I do for my planet.
