City Council Holds Special Meeting
Tolson Scores 1,000th Point One of the greatest achievements in a high school basketball player’s career is reaching the 1,000th point marker. It takes time, patience and knowledge on how to get to the basket and score. Many don’t achieve this moment until their senior year of high school, after having four seasons under them. But on December 18, 2023, Trenton high school junior Kiefer Tolson achieved this great accomplishment. During their Holiday Hoops matchup at the NCMC Ketcham Community Center against the Brookfield Bulldogs, the crowd waited patiently for the moment to happen after following Tolson’s career the last two seasons. People in the stands included his family, fellow classmates and community members. With less than a minute on the clock during the first quarter of the Holiday Hoops game, Tolson’s teammates focused on one thing, getting Tolson the ball. The Trenton Bulldogs were able to steal the ball, making a fast break away down the court, with Tolson leading the way. With 25.2 seconds left, Tolson went for the layup, but was fouled by the Brookfield defense. Making his way to the free throw-line, one shot stood between Tolson and this great accomplishment. With a form that had been perfected after many years and a perfectly quiet gym, Tolson took the shot and, with ease, it made its way through the hole. The quiet gym erupted with chants and cheers as a short time out was taken to recognize the junior’s hard work. With this being only the ninth game of the season, there is no doubt, for the rest of it and during next year's season, that Tolson will continue to work hard and score more points.

would be willing to shadow current attorney Tara Walker on the prosecution side to get a lay of the land. After discussion, there was a motion to accept Kinney’s application for the attorney and prosecution position. The motion was approved by all city council members. Mrs. Walker wanted to end the discussion by saying thank you for the many years she had the privilege of working with everyone. Next up for discussion was the pay for the water and sewer distribution employees. During the pre-
vious meeting, it was brought to attention that the motion to approve a pay increase was not specific enough and assumptions were made. Last month all employees were given a pay increase. It was discussed where the money would come from to pay the employees. There was also discussion about how the assumption was made to raise starting wages. There was then concern brought forward that if they were to do that, then new employees would be making more than employees who had been there longer.
It was concluded that base pay for the water/sewer distribution department should have a minimum of $18.75 for all employees, new and current. The council would like to look further into where they base raises off percentage or dollar wise towards all departments. They will also be looking into the value of increasing pay for those who have licenses that the departments can use. The next regular meeting of the Trenton City Council will be Tuesday, January 8, 2024 at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

OBITUARIES Honorable Andrew Allen Krohn Andrew Allen Krohn, 79 of Princeton, passed away due to complications from open heart surgery and kidney disease on Friday, December 15, 2023, at NorthCare Hospice House at North Kansas City Hospital in Kansas City. Andy was born to Frank and Margaret Goodman Krohn in Kansas City on April 7, 1944. Andy was raised on the East side of Kansas City, where he graduated from East High School. Andy loved sports and was an All-City and starting quarterback on the football team and played in the first televised high school football game in Kansas City. Andy also started on the basketball team, ran track and was an All-Star baseball player. Andy furthered his education at the University of Missouri at Columbia for two years. He transferred to the University of Missouri at Kansas City and received a Bachelor’s Degree in History. Andy began working at Mobil Oil in Milwaukee, WI, where he met and later married Darlene Mathews in 1968. Their first daughter, Jennifer, was born in 1968. Andy transferred to Kansas City with Mobil Oil. In 1969, Andy was accepted into Law School at the University of Missouri at Kansas City where he attended night school while working for Mobil Oil in Kansas City. Andy earned his Juris Doctorate Degree in Law in 1970 and son Matthew was born in 1971. Andy began practicing law in the Kansas City area. However, since a young boy, Andy was drawn to Mercer County where he enjoyed spending time at his Aunt Vera and Uncle Jack Goodman’s farm northwest of Princeton. After visiting with Uncle Jack over a beer at Calamity Jane Days, Andy decided to move the family to Princeton where he joined law school friend Ron Barker at his law practice in Princeton. Andy became the Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Mercer County and engaged in private practice. Daughters Amy and Carrie were born in 1974 and ’76, and Andy and Darlene raised their four children close to Lake Paho until their divorce. Andy served 17 years as Prosecuting Attorney for Mercer County and in the private practice of law. Andy was appointed Associate Circuit Judge of Mercer County in 1992, and after serving for nine years, he was elected Circuit Judge of the 3rd Judicial Circuit in 2000 and served as the Presiding Judge from 2000-06. Andy
Andrew Krohn
started the 3rd Circuit Drug Program when he became Circuit Judge in 2000. In 2005, the program received national recognition when Judge Krohn accepted the Sen. Harold Hughes Memorial Award from the National Rural Institute on Alcohol and Drug Abuse at a conference in Menomonie, WI. Judge Krohn was very proud of the Drug Court Program, now referred to as the 3rd Circuit Treatment Court Program. In fact, Andy had a Drug Court graduate speak at his retirement reception when he retired as judge. Andy was proud of the fact that when he was Circuit Judge, the 3rd Judicial Circuit received for the first time the Daniel J. O’Toole and Permanency Awards, “In Recognition of Excellence in Service by Providing Timely Justice to the Public having achieved Case Processing Time Standards Criteria.” These awards were presented personally by members of the Missouri Supreme Court. The 3rd Circuit also received awards for the Juvenile Courts (Permanency Award) Andy presided over as Circuit Judge in the four counties comprising the 3rd Circuit - Mercer, Grundy, Harrison and Putnam Counties. Following retirement as a judge, Andy joined his son Matthew at the Andereck Evans Law Firm in Trenton as “of counsel” status where he practiced law for five years until Matt was elected judge in 2014. Andy continued working at the Firm, working part-time until a couple of years ago. In 1985, after a courtship, Andy married widow Connie Deegan Renfro. So, Connie, Steven, Lesley and Seth joined the family, where we truly became one family and remain so today. Connie took up most of Andy’s hobbies of hunting, fishing and camping and she became quite good at all of them. Connie retired from hunting after harvesting the largest buck ever shot by a family member on their farm. When Andy travelled for training as a judge, Connie always ac-
companied him. They enjoyed travelling together, especially when Andy’s best friend, Floyd Anderson, took them to places like Colorado, Cabo San Lucas or on a cruise on his big yacht up the East Coast. Andy and Connie enjoyed doing everything together. They often sang together while traveling in the car to their favorite tunes by artists like Roy Orbison or Neil Diamond, and they sounded quite good as a duet. They shared a lot of laughs and good times. Andy was proud of and loved his family, including his children and grandchildren. Andy was involved in his community and is a past President of the Princeton Rotary Club. He started the Youth Turkey Calling Contest, which the Club has continued to hold each spring for area youth. He also initiated the youth football program at Princeton. Andy and Connie enjoyed attending their kids’ ballgames together, where some years they attended over 100 games in a year. Andy loved deer, turkey and quail hunting. He enjoyed fishing, tying flies for fly fishing, reloading ammunition, reading, watching movies and watching the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals and the Mizzou Tigers play. Andy loved experiencing deer camp with his family and kids. He enjoyed teaching his grandkids about hunting and imparting his wisdom about life. Andy also loved his Catholic Faith and church, Immaculate Heart of Mary in Princeton where he and Connie attended together. Andy is survived by his wife, Connie of the home; son, Steven Renfro and wife, Lila; daughter Jennifer Krohn-Siemer and her son, Tyler; daughter, Lesley Willson and husband, Brad and children Elizabeth and Zach; son, Matthew and his wife, Kelly and their children, Logan, Lauren & Landon; daughter, Amy Krohn and her partner, Karrie and sons, Ayden and Eian; daughter, Carrie Ebert (Krohn) and husband, Chris and their children, Connor, Carson, Corigan and Caden; and son Seth and his wife, Melissa and their children, Mary Jane, Deegan, Adeline and Juliana. Seven cards were sent by Janice Stimpson during November to members experiencing illness and bereavement. There were prayer requests for Barb Pfaff, Jim Cox and Beverly Roberts. Russell Roberts is now in seriously bad health. The Wesley United Methodist Church and First Christian Church have combined their choirs and will present a cantata on Sunday, Dec. 17. They will observe a combined service
on Sunday, Dec. 24. The Christmas display at Wright Memorial Hospital is available for observers to enjoy. Several women volunteered to help Lynn Griffin Friday morning, Dec. 8, at Rissler School to help with a project for Bright Futures. Betty Wimer will present the devotion when the circle meets again after the winter break. Barbara Crow presented the lesson using the book “Christmas Miracles – a Collection of Stories” written by Brad and Sherry Steiger. Her scripture was the Christmas story from Matthew. The miracle selected from the book was the story of the German and allied soldiers during WWI holding a truce on Christmas Eve, joining one another in singing carols, playing a game of soccer and ending the joint celebration by shaking hands. The war then continued. The meeting closed with prayer.
Shakespearean Circle Hold Christmas Luncheon The Shakespearean Circle’s Christmas luncheon was held Dec. 13 at the home of Sandy McGinnis in Chillicothe. Those present included Krista Rickerson, Amy White, Susan Engelmann, Sarah Dannar, Terry Cobb and Sandy McGinnis. Members were treated to appetizers and wassail as they gathered around the Christmas tree. Lunch consisted of pumpkin soup, salad, rolls, pork tenderloin, cranberries,
dressing, asparagus spears, and stuffed mushrooms. Dessert was apple cake topped with cinnamon whipped cream. Following lunch, members enjoyed a lively, humorous game of “Buy the Book.” Study questions for The Circle’s next play, “The Merchant of Venice” were distributed. The Shakespearean Circle will break for the holidays and return to meeting in February.

Megan Erickson, Head Athletic Trainer from Trenton (hometown San Diego, CA), has been selected as North Central Missouri College’s Outstanding Employee for December. Megan is a certified and licensed athletic trainer and holds a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training with a minor in exercise science and a Masters of Athletic Training. Megan has been employed at NCMC for three years. Megan describes her job as exciting, entertaining, and helpful. When asked what her favorite thing about NCMC is, she said, “The hometown feel. I always feel welcomed, and it honestly feels like everyone is ready to lend a hand when needed.” At NCMC, Megan helped create the Introduction to Athletic Training course and has helped develop the athletic training department at the Ketcham Center. In the future, Megan would like to grow the athletic training department and grow the student-athlete population to have more trainers. Megan said, “I feel the athletic department is constantly growing, so I feel that we have a steady increase. Our athletics are full of extremely talented athletes, on and off the field.” When Megan isn’t at work, you can find her helping her fiancé at home with random projects or spending time with family and friends. She also enjoys line dancing, cooking, and sports.

China’s economic might has steadily weakened The glory days for the Chinese economy appear to be over. After posting robust double-digit annual growth during the 2000s, China's economy now struggles to expand even half that fast. The World Bank has downgraded its estimate of China's 2023 growth to 5.2% from the 5.6% it had predicted in June. And it foresees the expansion slowing to 4.5% in 2024 and 4.3% in 2025. The world’s second-biggest economy faces a series of problems: An aging workforce. High levels of debt, especially in local governments. The collapse
of an overbuilt property market. Sagging consumer confidence. And high unemployment for young people: The jobless rate for people ages 16 to 24 hit a record 21.3% in June, prompting the government to stop publishing such data. Overall growth in China dropped to 3% in 2022, in part a result of President Xi Jinping’s draconian COVID-19 lockdowns, which paralyzed economic activity in many places. Xi dropped the zero-COVID policy at the end of last year. But the expected bounce-back fizzled after an initial burst of growth in early 2023.

High School Basketball This year during Holiday Hoops both Trenton Bulldog teams were matched up against the Brookfield Bulldogs. The Lady Bulldogs faced off first. The first two minutes of the game started off slow as both teams adjusted to playing in the college gym. Mirena King would be the first person to score during the game, having a basket and hitting two free throws. Brookfield’s first points would be off a made free throw with three minutes left in the first quarter. Brookfield would get the last shot off in the quarter which didn’t go in and was rebounded by Madi Moore. The quarter ended with Trenton in the lead, 5-3. Brookfield would start off with the ball in the beginning of the second quarter. King would hit a three pointer to ex-
tend Trenton’s lead. On an out of bounds play Moore would add an additional two points. Trenton decided to play in a man-to-man defense covering Brookfield’s better offensive players one on one. A missed shot by King would be rebounded by Keagen Croy who also missed but was backed up by Kenzie Lynch who put it in for two. The last points of the quarter would be an assist from King to Croy to bring the first half 188 Trenton. Trenton would dominate in the third quarter, only allowing Brookfield to score two points to their 12. Astrid Soriano would score off a rebound fast break for two. The Bulldogs pushed the Brookfield offense with a full court press, with King having a steal and also forcing them to have multiple turnovers.
King and Soriano would both hit a three late in the quarter. Brookfield would end the quarter scoring their two points under the basket. Third quarter score stood at Trenton 30 – Brookfield 10. Trenton would again score 12 more points in the fourth quarter, seeing Kaylor Hodge start it off with a three-pointer. Lynch would have a steal and make the bucket for two. As the game ended Trenton decided to give some of their starters a break and put in some under classmen. Among them was Ayra Meeker, who posted up in the paint and was able to execute a move for two. The Trenton Lady Bulldogs would take the win 42-18. The Trenton Bulldogs would have a more challenging game against the Brookfield Bulldogs.

The game started off with the Bulldogs winning the tip off. After four minutes neither team had yet to score, with both teams getting off a lot of shots and having multiple rebounds. Brookfield would be the first to score though, adding two points to the score board. Kiefer Tolson would be the first to score for the Bulldogs, getting a steal, making a layup and getting fouled and scoring on the free throw line. Tolson would score many more times and would reach his 1,000th career point off a free throw (see front page). Trenton would lead at the end of the first quarter, 13-6. Trenton would start the second quarter in possession of the ball. Within the first few seconds Brookfield would score two. After Tolson’s show-
ing in the first quarter, Brookfield decided to run a box and one on him, giving his other teammates opportunities to score. Gabe Novak would have a rebound and a put back on offense. Even being covered oneon-one Tolson was still able to hit a couple threes and layups. The second quarter would end with Brookfield closing the gap but with Trenton still in the lead, 26-25. Brookfield would have first possession of the ball in the second half. After a lot of up and down on the court, the score stayed close. Novak would hit a three in the middle of the quarter followed by two points scored by Maverick Sole. By the end of the quarter Trenton was behind by one point, the score 3536. The fourth quarter would start with
Brookfield hitting one out of two free throws. After a few offensive rebounds Sole would make an assist to Seth Doolittle for two. Brookfield would dominate the boards on both the defensive and offensive sides of the court, scoring multiple times. A timeout was called by Trenton with 3:31 left on the clock. With the score in Brookfield’s favor, 45-37 with Trenton had some ground to make up. The game would come down to fouls and free throws. Trenton would try and get the ball back by fouling but Brookfield would continue to hit free throws. Tolson would make his free throws, going 100 percent from the line that night. Novak would make the last two points of the game, but it wouldn’t be enough. Brookfield would take the win 43-55.

Dear Santa, I want a new pair of shoes. I need sweatshirts this year; I have been nice. My favorite thing about Christmas is that I get gifts. I love how you bring us presents, that we all smile because of you, and that we leave you cookies and milk. You eat them, and they wake up and see when they are gone, and they say Santa was here.
