The indoor practice facility will be located on the lot next to the current Russ Derry Practice Facility across from the Ketcham Community Center on Lulu Street. NCMC Foundation Director Alicia Endicott welcomed everyone and thanked the
Trustees and Foundation Board for their support and patience with this project. “This project has been in the works for over two years, and there have been changes and challenges, but we are very excited that this project has finally started,” commented Endicott. “The Russ Derry Practice Facility will not only benefit our current student-athletes, but student-athletes for years to come.” Endicott then introduced the daughter of Russ Derry, Mrs. Judy Derry Mahoney, and thanked her for her support of the proj-

Mrs. Mahoney made a few remarks about the changes to the game of baseball from when her dad played and how impressed and pleased he would be with the practice facility. “Sometimes (when playing with his brothers), it even came down to playing one-on-one with a piece of board and a ball of twine. He would just be amazed with this project.” NCMC Athletic Director Nate Gamet provided a construction update on the project and highlighted NCMC NJCAA Aca-

Trenton R-IX Board Discusses Four-Day Week The Trenton R-IX Board of Education met on Tuesday, October 10 at 5:30 pm. in the performing arts center due to the presentation of a four-day school week and the potential crowd it would bring. The meeting began with the approval of the previous minutes, bills, the treasurer’s report, and consent of agenda items.

week presentation made by the President of the Trenton Teachers Association Anna Musleman. When talking to some of the people in the crowd, many were unsure of the four-day week schedule because they did not have enough information on the subject. When talking to some of the current teaching staff, they felt like the four-day week would be beneficial
for teachers and help build ‘teacher morale’. The presentation made note of the expressed interest during the teacher evaluations. It was said that it would help with teacher shortages, the quality of staff members, and the use of substitutes. For the student side of things, it will supposedly help with atten[See R-IX, Page 2]

the elementary. In addition, the District will look to improve access control with the purchase of an electronic door access system. The board received an update on the progress of the Ball Field Relocation Project. The Russ Derry Sports Complex recently concluded a successful softball season, hosting numerous games. Despite this achievement, there is still a significant amount of work ahead to bring the project to its completion. Remaining tasks on the to-do list include the construction of the outfield fence on Field One, installation of dugout fences, in-
terior work on the concession stand, and the installation of the playground. In the coming weeks, volunteers will be working to tackle these remaining tasks and bring the project closer to finalization. The board also deliberated on the possibility of creating a “Wall of Fame” to celebrate and pay tribute to the history of athletics in Princeton. This initiative aims to honor the achievements and contributions of the school’s athletes. The board plans to further explore this concept in an upcoming meeting. In new business, the board approved the 20232024 school bus routes. Approval was granted for a payment of
$26,377.57 to IMS, the District's third-party administrator for health insurance. This payment covers claims incurred during the 2022-2023 plan year, which were recently received due to delays in processing by the medical provider. It was announced that Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held Thursday, October 26 from 1-7 p.m. There will be no school on Friday, October 27. During a closed session, the board approved the resignation of custodian Jason Bears. The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Princeton R-V Board of Education will be Monday, November 13, 2023.

dance within the school district. Their hope is to reach 90 percent of students 90 percent of the time regarding the CSIP smart goal 1.4. For a lot of their research, the teacher’s association reached out to other schools that have already implemented the four-day weeks. For those schools the schedule change has seemed to work. The big question is ‘will the change work for the Trenton school district?’ Looking at the school year as a whole, a lot of Mondays are already off due to teacher days and holidays. Only 19 weeks are full five-day weeks. Having those Mondays off, teachers and students would be able to schedule things like doctors’ appointments and other things. There were some concerns the Teachers Association brought forward about the change. Such concerns were childcare for younger students. It was voiced that because the day off would be regularly scheduled that it would be easier than finding childcare on random days off. At the end of the discussion Mr. Gott voiced his opinion on the situation. With this being the second

baseball career. Kramer Contracting Company is constructing the facility, which features a 120 x 84 indoor practice area and a 60 x 60 foyer. The building features a Russ Derry memorial room, laundry and storage room, and a turfed practice field/hitting facility. The space will allow for softball and baseball players to have the space to practice indoors all year round and free up the Ketcham gym
for basketball practice and public use. Funding for the project came from private donations, and 85 percent of the project will be completed mid-winter. However, the completion of the locker rooms and a few additional practice items will have to wait. Anyone wanting more information on how to donate to the project is encouraged to contact Alicia Endicott at 660-3576403.
time this has been presented to the board, he is all for doing more research on the situation. He voiced that “he’d be lying right now if he was really for the four-day school week.” He would like to get more feedback from the community as it would be a big change for them. He also voiced DESE’s concerns about the four-day week and how they are “not for the shortened weeks, and that it was a fear of his.” And lastly while the attendance would be a “slight achievement it wouldn’t be major.” With the board closing the discussion, they continued with the meeting. Next on the agenda was MAP and EOC data. Each school Principal went over where they were lacking and their plans for improvement. The special education report highlighted all the achievements of the program and what they are working towards, such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech/language therapy. The Assessment Program evaluation was next on the agenda. It highlighted things such as MAP testing, End of Course (EOC) testing, and ACT testing for juniors along with other tests that the school provides. Mr. Gott then went over the summer school report
from this last summer and the contract with Catapult Learning. He went over the district survey taken by the parents and how most of the questions were answered with “completely agreed” in a positive way. For the Safety report, Mr. Gott confirmed all safety drills are complete and that there is more headway regarding the doors and windows of Rissler. There will also be concrete poured in December to fix the sidewalk. The open portion of the school board meeting ended with Principal and Director of Academics reports and Superintendent comments made by Mr. Gott. He wanted to highlight the parent/teacher conferences and the importance of teacher/parent relationships. During closed session the board: • approved the resignation of Jane Cooksey as TMS paraprofessional, effective September 28, 2023. • approved Jamie Beverlin, Cara Leininger and Jane Cooksey as substitutes for October. • approved the hiring of Sarah Sager as TMS paraprofessional. The next regular meeting of the Trenton R-IX Board of Education will be held Tuesday, November 14 at 5:30 p.m. in the district office.

AREA Reader Questions “Why?” in Letter to the Editor Dear Editor: Why? America is the best country to live in, but we have a few things we need to improve. Why? Have you ever asked why … ...our Congress members cannot get along and vote for the good of the people? ...there is so much dislike and hate against other human beings? ...MODOT has made us a new 6 highway system which is already riddled with ruts, potholes and cracks? ...American factories are still not manufacturing items we found that we needed so desperately during the pandemic? ...are so many Americans not working, not wanting to work a full day or week, or they just want to work from home? ...the court systems are not doing all they can do to deter crime in America, gun violence and drugs ? ...there are criminals in politics, sports, churches and other jobs? Before I close, I want to tell you how blessed we are here in North Missouri with farm land, beautiful countryside with rolling hills, plenty of trees and water. We have a great public school system which I’m very proud of, a fantastic community college, radio station, newspaper, several churches, banks, a hospital, doctors, dentists, chiropractors, gas stations and many other businesses. Most of all we have plenty of locally famous family and friends. Born, lived, worked, and retired in Trenton Dorothy Taul
Thompson House Is Rotary Program Topic The Thompson House was the topic of a program presented at the Thursday, Oct. 4 meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club, held at the BTC Bank community room. Jackie Soptic presided at the meeting, Dan Wilford gave the prayer and Brian Upton was the sergeant at arms. Program chairman Gary Dolan gave an update on planned work at the Thompson House, located on the west side of Crowder State Park. The Thompson House is the first house built in Grundy County and a local organization, Friends of the Thompson House, have spent many years trying to restore the home, which belonged to the family of Dr. William Preston Thompson. The home is currently open to visitors. Dolan and his wife, Ellen, along with James and Martha Goedert told about the efforts to relocate a cabin, found in Mercer County, on the grounds of the Thompson House, with plans to restore the structure to represent the slave cabin that had been built on the property but is no longer there. Mrs. Dolan
noted that it was the Thompson family slaves who constructed the home and that those efforts will be memorialized on a plaque to be located at the site. It was noted that 2,000 persons visited the home and property last year. The home will be available for tours on Saturday, Oct. 21 as part of the Missouri Day Festival activities. Crowder State Park personnel will have a vehicle available to drive persons to the site. During the business meeting, a sign-up sheet was passed around for those members interested in attending the District 6040 Foundation Dinner in Kansas City on Nov. 4. Volunteers were also asked to help with putting together an entry in the Missouri Day Festival Parade. The Rotary Club has been chosen as the grand marshal for the parade, whose theme is “Honoring Grundy County Pioneers.” The Rotary Club has been in charge of the parade since 1999. Gary Dolan will have the program at the Oct. 11 meeting of the Rotary Club, with woodworking as the topic.

COMMUNITY Ward Circle Discusses Hosea and the Steadfast Love of God Four members were in attendance when the Ward Circle of the First Christian Church met October 3rd at El Toro’s for a luncheon meeting. Following the meal, Talma Joiner, Chairperson, opened the meeting with the CWF Prayer. Her thought for the day was “It’s good to be a Christian and know it. It’s better to be a Christian and show it.” Barbara Crow reported that no requests were made in the past month for the service committee. Janice Stimpson, courtesy chairperson, had sent ten cards during September. A bereavement meal was served to the family of Betty Smith. Mrs. Joiner read the list of Christian ethics that have been published in the church bulletin the past two weeks. The group commented on the usefulness of them in our daily life and especially our church life. October 8th will be the
next NCMC dinner. A list of needed items was given plus in-person help. There will be a congregational meeting on October 8th to cast votes on hiring Lori Kiehl as our permanent minister. The circle will be collecting money on October 22nd and 29th for Tools of Hope. Betty Wimer will contact Church World Service for literature for the event. Mrs. Stimpson presented the lesson entitled “God Loves You: He always has and always will.” The example taken from the Bible was of Hosea and Gomer, the wife God chose for him. It was to be an example for Israel that demonstrated how unfaithful they had been while God’s love and faithfulness never wavered. In the Old Testament God’s steadfast love was mentioned 248 times. The lesson is still valid today. The meeting closed with the CWF Prayer.

A Word From... by the Trenton Ministerial Alliance
“Forgiveness”
By Peter Allen St. Philip’s Episcopal Church Have you ever felt the wonderful lifting of the weight from guilt off of your conscience? The lightness of a clean slate, to be able to start over with no
recrimination or repercussions? The chance to be in the light at the end of the tunnel instead of just hoping to get there while still in the dark? Well I experi-
enced that just a few weeks ago and it was re-emphasized to me by a Sunday Sermon (you can find the sermon, if you wish, at Sermons That Work, Pentecost 16 (A) by Joseph S. Pagano. It was a sermon about the unforgiving servant and St. Peter asking how many times we should forgive). So back to my story of forgiveness. I was totally focussed on a new project and let slip something I had committed to long ago. It was marked on the calendar, but somehow I thought that it was a week later. I had fun with my new project and then suddenly realized that I had screwed up. What to do? Ignore it and let it just go by? Nobody

would know. But I would. No. I called up the neglected party and confessed that I had been enjoying myself with my new project and had ignored and forgotten my longstanding commitment to them. I asked how I could make it right. I expected some kind of reprimand but instead got a gentle focused answer, just come on in and fix it. So I did. No one except me and they knew about it. All of you reading this had no idea. But I felt that calming sense of forgiveness and acceptance from the injured party. Rev. PASSES, AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US. But do we? His point was that we expect God to forgive US right away, whereas we can maybe take our time about forgiving others. We may say we forgive, but bring up the problem again and again, or tell lots of people about how “you know who” screwed up. When we are baptized in the Episcopal Church one of the questions asked is, “Will you seek and serve Christ in ALL (my capitals) persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?” and our response is, “I WILL, WITH GOD’S HELP”. This forgiveness thing is

easy for God, who loves us and accepts us warts and all, but it is not so easy for us. Sometimes we have to look really hard to see Christ in those around us. More factory robots
A push to invest in U.S. manufacturing is also bringing more robots to American factory floors. A new report from the International Federation of Robotics shows that more than 39,000 robots were installed at U.S. businesses in 2022, up 10% from the year before. The U.S. accounted for 7% of all global robot installations in 2022, placing it third behind China and Japan, according to the Frankfurt, Germany-based group’s annual World Robotics report. The report says there’s higher production capacity
in car manufacturing, electronics and other robot-reliant industries such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals and metals. More than 14,000 robots were installed at automotive companies in the U.S., up 47% from the previous year. The trend is a potential boon for Japan’s FANUC Corp., Europe’s ABB, and other big robotics manufacturers. The report cites massive political support for U.S. investments passed by Congress to boost the semiconductor industry, electric vehicles and other sectors.

Football TRENTON 34 MAYSVILLE 24 Last Friday, the Trenton Bulldogs took on the Maysville Wolverines in a GRC matchup. The game started by the school honoring the Senior class football players, marching band, color guard, and cheer seniors. Senior football players include Gavin Cagle, Cameron Christy, Brayden Hughs, Gabe Novak, Lance Polk, Gabe Stark, Collin Taylor, Brayden Wiggins, and Evan Claycomb. The game began with Trenton kicking the ball to Maysville. Camden Skipper kicked the ball down field for the Bulldogs in which the Wolverines returned to their own 40-yard line. Maysville worked their way down the field completing four first downs before ending up on the two-yard line to score a touchdown, scoring the first points of the game. With a completed twopoint conversion the Wolverines took the lead 0-8.
The Bulldogs then had a slow start after Maysville’s kick off landed in the hands of Cameron Christy. Mason Rongey would then help lead the Bulldogs to a first down, with Brayden Hughs and Gabe Novak following a few plays later. After a false start flag against the Bulldogs Rongey looked to make a passing play to Elijah Miller, which was then knocked down and recovered by the Wolverines. Maysville would attempt to make it down the field but would be stopped short and turned over on downs after a tackle was made by Hughs and Brayden Wiggins. Trenton would finish the quarter with the ball in their hands on the Maysville 42-yardline. Starting the second quarter on second and five, the play is drawn up for Novak to take the snap. He’d then carry it for six yards to gain a first down. Carries by Rongey would help drive the team downfield but after a pass attempt

from Novak to Rongey, the Bulldogs would turn the ball over on downs. Maysville would then run four plays, being shut down by Trenton and being forced to punt the ball. On the punt return Novak got a hold of the ball and made a 65-yard return for the touchdown. The Bulldogs would bring the score to 6-8. Maysville’s next set of plays would be shut down after the defense but pressure on the ball and forced the offense to punt again. A series of plays by the Bulldogs would lead them to end up on the third-yard line. Two plays with Rongey holding onto the ball ended with him in the endzone for Trenton’s second touchdown of the night allowing Trenton to take the lead 12-8. Skipper’s kick to the Wolverines would be brought down by Christy on the Wolverine’s 36-yard line. A few plays later, Maysville would then make an attempt at a pass
play that Novak would intercept. With 21 seconds left on the clock Trenton would draw up a passing play to Miller who would then have it stripped out of his hands and be recovered by Maysville. With Maysville in possession of the ball, the defense wouldn’t allow them to score again, thanks to pressure from Gavin Cagle and a tackle from Wiggins. The halftime score ended with the Bulldogs in the lead, 12-8. The second half began with Maysville kicking the ball to the Bulldog’s special teams, Christy with the return. Rongey and Novak would lead the team with carries down the field. A switch action play from Rongey to Novak to Hughs would put Hughs in the endzone for a 45-yard touchdown. A pass from Rongey to Aiden Weyer would give the Bulldogs two extra points, which brought the score 20-8. Maysville would come back and make several plays ending up with a five-yard touch-
down and completing a two-point conversion. With almost five minutes on the clock the score would end up being 20-16. Maysville’s kick off would be low and short and recovered by Evan Claycomb on the Trenton 37-yard line. Trenton’s plays would be short runs but not enough to get down the field. On the Bulldog punt it hit a Wolverine before hitting the ground and returned by Hunter Ledgerwood. The Bulldogs would use this play to score a touchdown, made by Novak. Mascorro’s kick would find its way through the uprights and bring Trenton’s lead 27-16. Maysville would end the third quarter in control of the ball. At the beginning of the fourth quarter Maysville would gain a first down after a personal foul against the Bulldogs. A few more penalties back and forth between the two teams would put Maysville on the 24-yard line. They would score the touchdown bringing the
score within three points, 27-24. Trenton would get the kickoff return and run a lot of short play sprints trying to run time off the clock. Five first downs later Novak would be able to score another touchdown for the Bulldogs, with Mascorro’s kick being good, bringing the final points of the night. Maysville would try to make one last attempt to score by throwing a passing play which was tipped by Novak and grabbed by Rongey. Trenton would end the night taking a knee to run out the clock, winning their sixth game of the season. The score 34-24. This Friday the Bulldogs will travel to Gallatin in hopes to bring the battle of highway six trophy home. For the past few years Gallatin has won the matchup, but this year Trenton hopes to bring home the trophy and the win. Kick off will begin at 7:00 pm in Gallatin.
