BJC and Saint Luke's Complete Transaction to Combine as Single, Integrated Health System ST. LOUIS and KANSAS CITY, Mo. – On Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024, BJC Health System of St. Louis (BJC) and Saint Luke's Health System of Kansas City (Saint Luke’s) announced they have completed their transaction to combine as an integrated, academic, and patient-centric Missouri-based health system. The two nonprofit health systems first announced plans to integrate in May 2023 following the signing of a letter of intent, and then reached a definitive agreement in November after satisfying all regulatory reviews. The transaction officially closed on Jan. 1, 2024, when Saint Luke’s joined BJC. With this action, BJC continues to be one of the largest employers in Missouri with a combined workforce of 44,000, and is now home to the top three and five of the top 10 hospitals in the state, according to the most recent U.S. News & World Report rankings. BJC remains committed to providing high-quality, affordable patient care at its 24 hospitals and hundreds of clinics in Missouri, southern Illinois, and eastern Kansas. It now offers patients expanded access to more than 3,500 clinical trials and increased opportunities for shared research, innovation, and clinical collaboration among physicians and researchers. BJC anticipates an annual community impact of $1B for the broader geographic
area it now serves. As previously announced, BJC will operate as a single, integrated health care organization serving patients from across Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, and the greater Midwest region and beyond. It will operate as BJC HealthCare in its Eastern Region and as Saint Luke’s Health System in its Western Region. Patients will experience no immediate change to the way they currently receive care, access their health records, or communicate with their medical teams. BJC Health System is led by CEO Richard J. Liekweg and an executive team focused on the mission and operations of the organization. In addition to his role as newly named BJC Health System President, Nick Barto also serves as President of the Eastern Region and will continue to be based in St. Louis. Julie Quirin has been named President of the Western Region and is located in Kansas City. “From the moment we first explored the concept of an integrated system, we have had a clear vision to improve health care in the Midwest,” said Richard Liekweg, BJC Chief Executive Officer. “By working together to deliver extraordinary clinical care and becoming the region’s premier destination to practice medicine, we will enhance patient care and accelerate medical breakthroughs. Today, with our 44,000 committed, hard-working clinicians and

OBITUARIES Dr. Albert Dean Cross M.D. Albert Dean Cross, a 93-year-old resident of Trenton, died on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at 3 p.m. in the home. Funeral services were held at the First Christian Church in Trenton on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. Interment followed the services at Resthaven Cemetery, north of Trenton. Dr. Cross was born on a farm north of Brimson on February 10, 1930. He was the first child of Raymond R. Cross and Eva M. Johnson Cross. He attended small one room country schools for his elementary education and graduated from Gilman City High School in 1947. He attended Northwest Missouri Teachers College at Maryville during the summer of 1947 and started teaching grades five through eight at Melbourne Elementary School in the fall at the age of seventeen. He continued attending summer school in Maryville and teaching in Melbourne for four years. His teaching career was interrupted by the Korean War. He was inducted into the United States Army in November 1951. He received his introduction into the medical field when the service sent him to pharmacy tech school. He spent the rest of his service time with the 4th M.A.S.H. in Stuttgart, Germany. On June 30, 1951, Albert Cross and Vera Mae Thompson were married in Kansas City. She was his soulmate for over 56 years, often working outside the home to help finance his education. They had two sons, Greg and Brad. Vera passed away in November 2007. On April 1, 2009, he and Carol Westcott were married. Following his discharge from the service in October 1953, he worked at General Mills Product Control Laboratory until the fall semester in 1954 when he enrolled in the pharmacy school at the University of Kansas City where he graduated in May 1957 as an honor student and a member of Rho Chi Honorary Pharmacy Society. He and Vera both worked fulltime to save money for medical school expenses for a year and in the fall of 1958, he entered the School of Medicine at the Univer-

sity of Missouri in Columbia. The money they had saved plus a few weeks of GI Bill that he had left lasted about a year. Vera baby-sat and Dr. Cross had a part-time pharmacy job which helped with expenses. Fortunately, the doctors of Missouri had pooled money and started low interest rate lending to medical students. Dr. Cross visited it so often that when he graduated they made him president of the Missouri State Medical Foundation for a few years. Dr. Cross has been a member of many medical organizations and the recipient of many honors and awards. From medical school he graduated as an honor student and as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society. He was a member of the American Medical Association, Missouri State Medical Association, fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Missouri Academy of Family Physicians, and the University of Missouri Medical Proprietary School Board of Governors. He received the University Medical Alumni service award in 1994. He was President of the Grand River Medical Society and Chief of Staff of Wright Memorial Hospital. He was a member of the Board of Trustees and Director of Trenton Trust Bank for over 20 years. He was a board member of the Trenton School Board. He was active as a Boy Scout leader and is a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He served as President of the Trenton Baseball Association and as President of the American Legion baseball team. He has been a member of the First Christian Church in Trenton for over 56 years and has served in several capacities
including Elder, Deacon and Chairman of the Board. Dr. Cross finished medical training and established his practice of medicine in Trenton on July 1, 1963. He viewed his patients as friends and felt personally responsible for their health care. He never knew a 40hour work week and was available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. He loved practicing medicine and felt it was an honor and privilege that patients wanted to see him. Dr. Cross has been involved with, and an advocate of, North Central Missouri College since 1963. He was the first preceptor of nurses from the School of Nursing, which was started in 1966. Since retirement, he has been more active at North Central Missouri College, having served as President of the NCMC Foundation for three years and a member of the Board of Trustees for four years. His most treasured honor was having the new Allied Health building named Dr. Albert and Vera Cross Hall. Albert Cross was preceded in death by his wife Vera; his parents; and his brother, George. He is survived by his wife Carol; his sons, Greg (Connie) and Brad (Teresa); his brother, Marvin Ray (Nancy); his sisterin-law, Norma Cross; his grandchildren, Jacob (Staci), Ashlea (Travis) Watson, Ethan (Hayley), Alexander (Danielle) and Zachary. Two stepchildren also survive him, Jeffrey (Kati) Westcott and Kelle Westcott and her friend Rand Williams; step-grandchildren, Brooke Westcott and Courtney Westcott (Hunter) Haakonstad; and step-great-grandson Graham. Also, special neighbors Jordan, Christina, Harper, Jovie and Archie Ferguson. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to First Christian Church or the Cross Allied Health Scholarship Fund at North Central Missouri College. David William Crouch David William Crouch, 76, of rural Browning, was released from his earthly struggles and departed this life on Sunday, November 26, 2023, after struggling courageously with health issues for several years. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, January 6, 2024 at the Slater-Neal Funeral Home in Trenton. Family visitation will be 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service. A private inurnment will be conducted at a later date at Mt. Zion Christian Cemetery near Humphreys. The family has asked that memorial contributions be given to The American Legion. These may be left at or mailed to the Funeral Home. David was born March 25, 1947, in the Simpson Hospital at Milan, the son of Kenneth and Geraldine Watkins Crouch. He graduated from Humphreys R-4 High School in 1965. Early in his youth, David demonstrated a quick mind and love of the written word, a
fondness for pranks and typical farm boy mischief, and a talent for remembering details of conversations heard by eavesdropping on his elders’ conversations. After attending Northeast Missouri Teacher’s College (Truman University), he enlisted in the Navy, serving from 19671971, achieving the rank of Petty Officer. Serving on the USS Princeton LPH-5, David saw duty in much of the North Pacific Ocean, including Vietnam. An exciting highlight of his ship’s mission was to recover the Apollo 10 space capsule after splashdown in the South Pacific in May of 1969. He concluded his tour of duty in San Diego, CA, and lived there for several years before returning to Sullivan County. There he built his cozy, unique cordwood home and remained there, rarely wandering far, but immersing himself in the Parson community and its history. David was a man of many interests and passions: The roofing busi-
ness, beekeeping, woodworking, purveyor of antiques and “rustiques,” cooking, classic car enthusiast, cider pressing (his annual cider pressing at his home or the Hamilton Schoolhouse was a mustattend event for friends, family and neighbors), gardening, poignant historical or humorous perspective articles for the Milan Standard and other publications, and history of any era. His memory was phenomenal and he was a voracious and extensive reader. He was a devoted and loving brother, uncle and friend. He is survived by his sisters, Donna Muiller (Jim) of Westwood, KS, and Carol Crouch of Prairie Village, KS; niece, Amy Hileman (Keil) of DeSoto, KS and nephew, Neil Muiller (Stephannie) of Lawson, MO; six greatnieces and many friends. Online condolences may be left at www.resthavenmort.com.

Additionally, he was a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. Tanner had a variety of interests and hobbies that brought him joy. One of his passions was competitive bowling, which took him to Vienna, Austria for international competition. He also enjoyed the art of restoring old cars. He shared a special bond with his beloved dogs, Ash and Violet, who brought him comfort and companionship throughout

Shelling out for eggs The nearly two-year old bird flu outbreak has forced farmers to kill nearly 78 million birds, with many of those being egg-laying chickens, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That drove egg prices up to a record high of $4.82 per dozen last January, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Egg farms were the hardest hit because they tend to be the largest operations. In some cases, millions of chickens on a single farm were killed.
The outbreak has been less severe this year, allowing egg prices to recover. A dozen eggs cost $2.14 in November. Nearly 58 million birds were slaughtered in the first year of the outbreak. Over time, eggs have remained affordable and rarely topped $2 per dozen except occasionally during the spring when demand peaks around Easter. The previous highest egg price in the past decade was $2.97 in September 2015 during another bird flu outbreak when nearly 50 million birds had to be killed.

Highway 6 Bulldog Rematch The Trenton Bulldogs traveled to Gallatin on Tuesday to face the Gallatin Bulldogs in a rematch. Their first showing against each other was during the Gallatin Tournament, where the Gallatin Lady Bulldogs defeated the Trenton Lady Bulldogs during the championship game, 45-35, and the Trenton Bulldogs knocked the Gallatin Bulldogs to the consolation side of the bracket in game one, 58-51. Both Bulldog teams were looking forward to this rematch, with all teams looking for the win. The Lady Bulldog matchup was first on Tuesday night. Starting for the Trenton Lady Bulldogs was Kaylor Hodge, Kaegen Croy, Astrid Soriano, Madi Moore and Mirena King. And for the Gallatin Lady Bulldogs was Ashley Feiden, Kallie Salmon, Annabelle Ball, Brynn Bird and Kaylen Sterneker. Meeting in the jump off was Trenton’s Croy and Gallatin’s Ball. Gallatin won the tip off and the game commenced. Bird would get the first shot off in the game missing a three with M. King rebounding. She would get it to Soriano who would then turn it over with a travel call. For the first three minutes neither side would be able to land a basket after several shot attempts. Trenton would be the first to send one through the hoop with M. King making her way to the basket for a layup. The basket would be called good as she got fouled by Salmon for an extra shot at the free throw line. She would sink her free throw with ease making a three point play. Gallatin’s first point would be after Lyndsey King would miss a shot under the basket that would then be rebounded by Ball for two points. The Trenton offense would make most of their points of the quarter through free throws. But a pass from M. King to Moore would get another two points. The first quarter would end with the Trenton Lady Bulldogs in the lead, 9-2. Trenton would start with the ball in the second quarter. A miss by Moore would be rebounded by Feiden. The Trenton defense would be able to push her out of bounds returning the ball to them. A miss by Soriano would be rebounded by Sterneker and put back into the hands of Feiden. She would find Ball for the first two points of the quarter. Trenton would then come out with M. King bringing the ball up the floor. She would pass to Soriano who would then find Croy under the basket alone after the defense shifted for two points. The next Gallatin possession, Sterneker would sink a basket from the baseline short corner. Moore would then take her time and execute a post move under the basket for two points. Soriano would get her first foul of the game and send Feiden to the free throw line, who then made both shots. Trenton would go down the floor and give it to Croy who
would be double teamed and still able to make the basket. The Gallatin offense would make a gap for Salmon to get a three point off from the baseline, sailing it through the net. Later Salmon would be fouled by M. King and make one of two free throws. Soriano would get a steal and make a basket on the fast break. Kenzie Lynch would get her two points of the game. The half time score would still be in Trenton’s favor, 19-14. After the half time break Trenton would start with the ball in the second half. Ball would steal the ball and send it to Salmon who would miss, the ball being rebounded by Hodge. After a miss by Trenton, Feiden would get the rebound and find Ball for two. M. King would follow after with her own two points. Hodge would then go on and hit a three pointer, which would then be answered by Feiden with her own three pointer. Gallatin would call a 30 second time out with 3:33 left in the third quarter, the score 21-26 Trenton. After the timeout, Hodge would shoot the ball just going over the rim into the hands of Moore who then put it in for two points. Ball would follow the play having her own two points off a fade away shot. Later on a miss by Ball would be rebounded by M. King who would then miss as well with Gallatin getting the rebound sending Salmon down the floor for two.
with Gallatin in the lead 32-29. The fourth quarter Gallatin would steal the ball from Trenton missing their shots before Trenton got the rebound. Steals back and forth between both teams would result in Croy getting fouled by L. King, sending her to the free throw line. Croy would sink both of her free throws. Croy would then later score another two points from the block. Hodge would hit a three pointer right before the Trenton timeout. With 5:02 on the clock Trenton would lead by four. Coming out of the timeout Bird would hit a three for Gallatin. After a steal, Feiden would get fouled twice in a row, the second time sending her to the free throw line to sink two baskets.
