BRIEFS Community Blood Drives

Community Blood Center (CBC) recently joined blood centers across the country in an emergency plea for blood donors following a holiday season of low donor turnout and recent winter weather that resulted in widespread cancellation of appointments and blood drives. Additionally, a recent spike in seasonal illnesses across the region is preventing many from donating.

There are two blood drives scheduled for the Trenton area next week for those who are interested in donationg. A drive will be held Monday, January 29 from 12-6 p.m. at the North 65 Center, 2901 Hoover Drive in Trenton. Then on Tuesday, January 30, a drive will be held from 2-6 p.m. in the gymnasium at Pleasant View R-6 School, 128 SE 20th Street, Trenton. Anyone wishing to make a donation is asked to call 877-468-6844, or visit savealifenow.org to make an appointment.

Grundy Co. Republicans to Meet

Grundy County Republicans will meet Monday, January 29 at 6 p.m. at the Grundy County Courthouse first floor courtroom to plan the Presidential Caucus to be held March 2, 2024. Other events for the election year will be discussed. All office holders, central committee members and interested Republicans are welcome to attend.

GCHD Baby Shower

The Grundy County Health Department will host a baby shower for new and expecting mothers who have due dates between February and May 2024. The shower will be hosted at the department’s new annex, located at 1307 East 17th Street, in Trenton.

The baby shower will be held on Friday, Feb. 23, 2024 from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m. The celebration will include refreshments, giveaways and helpful information for new and expecting mothers. Health department staff will be available to answer questions regarding breastfeeding, immunizations, WIC and more. All attendees who register will receive a diaper bag with a package of diapers, baby wipes, a cooler bag, a receiving blanket and other items.

Attendees must register no later than Friday, Feb. 16 to be assured of a gift package.

Council Discusses Billing Inserts, Accepts Bids The Trenton City Council met in open session Monday, January 22, 2024 at 7 p.m., at City Hall. In attendance were Mayor Jackie Soptic; Council Members William Fisher, Calvin Brown, Timothy Meinecke, David Mlika, Glenn Briggs, Duane Urich, John Dolan on Zoom and Marvin Humphreys on Zoom; City Attorney Kenton Kenney; City Administrator/Utilities Director Ron Urton; Police Chief Rex Ross; and City Clerk Cindy Simpson.

The meeting was called to order after the pledge of allegiance and a prayer. The minutes from the January 10, 2024 meeting were read and approved, along with the dually obligated bills.

The Police Personnel board was the first to give their report. Timothy Findley from El Dorado Springs, who has 17 years of experience, was approved to join the police force by the council members. The Utility committee reported briefly on the things they were bringing to the council in the new business portion of the meeting.

The finance committee will meet at the end of February to hit the budget hard, hoping to move things around to help out all of the

for a demolition grant that they have used in the past, to take down properties that have had no occupancy or utilities for the last 12 months. She also thanked City Clerk Cindy Simpson and Rosetta Marsh for learning the software programs to keep the City Calendar website up to date.

Lastly she reported on the meetings and places she has gone for December 2023 and January 2024. She hoped to be able to attend the Main Street Day at the Capitol in Jefferson City, depending on weather conditions.

discussion and approval of the billing insert policy from the January 10 meeting. The last addition of the policy read “Inserts shall be informational only. No solicitation of business allowed.” The new revision of the TMU utility billing stuffers/inserts policy was approved by all members of the Council.

The new business portion of the agenda had many things to go over.

First up was the discussion and approval of a RICE certification testing agreement. The agreement includes the testing of 12 engines, test protocols, compliance status report and the performance test reports. The pricing for the test is based on the pricing from the 2022-2023 rate increases, leaving the total at

$25,000. The agreement was approved, with Humphreys voting no.

The next discussion was the purchasing of new oxidation catalysts. This price included the cost of the DC-66 100 cpsi OEM DCL and shipping, bringing it to a total of $36,094.72. The purchase was approved, with Humphreys voting no.

The last discussion about the catalyst was the service of washing them.

The theory is that the department will replace the old sets with the new sets, and then send the old sets off to get washed and then be used as backups for the new ones. The cost of getting the old catalyst washed and recoated came to an estimate of $7,178.85. Once again, the motion passed with Humphreys voting no.

Item number four, which was to be the discussion of the MPUA mutual aid agreement, was stricken off the agenda due to it not being a time sensitive subject and to give the city attorney more time to sort through it.

Item number five on the new business agenda was the discussion and approval of revisions to the TMU cash reserve policy. The council wanted to remove the maximum reserve for the water, sewer and electric departments, only wanting to set a minimum.

The revisions were approved, with Fisher voting no.

Councilmember Briggs then took over to explain the new Emergency Mass Notification Services. He explained how it can be ac-

cessed through the phones, either by calling or text messages, through a desktop app, a website, or even through an Alexa system.

The plan is to split the cost of the system between the water department, health department, city and county. The cost would be $1,000 cheaper per year and could be put on a contract for 1, 3, or 5 years with anytime termination.

Briggs said he is still waiting on the health department's response, but a motion was made to approve the new emergency system if the health department so chooses to participate in splitting the cost.

The motion was approved.

Bids for sand and rock were discussed, with both having five companies putting in for the bid. The

council approved a bid for sand from TB Dozing and Excavation at $6.50 per ton. A bid for rock from S&B Hinnen at $2.54 per ton was also approved.

The last item on the agenda was the discussion and approval of the 2023 net metering report. There was a peak of 15,600 hourly kilowatts used last year. It was discussed that the maximum the city can allow is 785,000 kilowatts.

This is based on the city’s use and those who have solar panels installed. The council voted to approve the report.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:53 pm. The next meeting of the Trenton City Council will be held on Monday, February 12, 2024 at city hall.

LOCAL Trenton Youth Receives Eagle Award On Saturday, January 20, Jacob Horton of Trenton earned the rank of Eagle Scout in a ceremony conducted by Kevin Bailey and held at First Baptist Church in Trenton. Horton is a member of Troop 97 in Trenton, which is sponsored by the Joseph L. Norton VFW Post No. 919 of Trenton.

Jeremy Chambers is Scoutmaster.

Eagle is the highest and most coveted award in all of Scouting and is the last major step in the advancement program for a Scout. It is at this point Scouting has achieved its purpose in the building of character, in the training for leadership, and the practice of service – not only helping those who follow them up the Scouting trail, but service and leadership in their community as well.

Horton began his journey with Troop 97 when he earned the Arrow of Light award.

During his time with Troop 97 he served in various leadership roles, including Quartermaster, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader and Senior Patrol Leader. In his career as a scout, Horton earned a total of 49 merit badges, earning him an astounding five additional palms.

Before a Scout becomes an Eagle Scout, they must plan, develop and give leadership to others in a service project for a religious institution, school or community. Horton’s Eagle project was documenting headstones at two local cemeteries and uploading pictures and data to a web page where information can be searched by the public. As a demonstration of leadership, Horton planned the work, organized the personnel needed, and then directed the project to its completion.

Sara Irlene Overton Anderson Sara Irlene Overton Anderson, age 89, a resident of Gladstone, passed on Sunday, January 21, 2024 at NorthCare Hospice House in North Kansas City.

Sara was born August 9, 1934 in Cainsville, the daughter of Doris and

Frances Wood Overton.

She taught school in Trenton and Smithville for over 30 years.

Funeral services will be held at Lindley Funeral Home in Chillicothe on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. A scheduled visitation will be held

from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Friends may call at Lindley Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Burial will be at the Resthaven Memorial Gardens of Chillicothe.

Horton is the son of Tim and Brandi Horton of Trenton and is a Junior at Trenton High School.

by University of Missouri Extension WINTERBERRY… A PLANT FOR WINTER INTEREST

by Jennifer Schutter, MU Extension Field Specialist Winterberry (Ilex verticillate), is a native deciduous holly. It is dioecious, which means it has separate male and female plants. Only fertilized female flowers will produce berries, so there must be a male plant close by.

“Cultivars of winterberry such as ‘Winter Red’ are often sold in bundles of male and female plants to ensure berry production” according to Jennifer Schutter, University of Missouri Extension Field Specialist in Horticulture.

Winterberry will grow in a wide range of soil types and does well in full sun, although it can tolerate partial shade. It is considered a medium-sized shrub reaching an average mature height and width of 6-8 feet. It can be used as a property border and as a screen. Schutter says, “Several should be planted in a row or a mass for wildlife food and habitat, or in a group for best display in a landscape.” Winterberry provides seasonal interest.

The bright red berries will often last throughout the winter and are attractive to birds and other wildlife. Winterberry is a background plant in the summer months but becomes the center of attention when covered with beautiful berries in winter.

Imogene Ann Arney, an 81-year-old Trenton resident, passed away at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, January 18, 2024 at Sunnyview Nursing Home in Trenton.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at Tenth Street Baptist Church in Trenton. Burial was in Rural Dale Cemetery, east of Trenton.

Imogene Ann Arney was born April 15, 1942 in Osgood to James “Frank” Franklin and Alice Imogene Moore Meeker. She graduated from Trenton High School.

On November, 23, 1970 she was united in marriage to Billy Gene Arney in Trenton.

For 33 years Imogene worked as a C.N.A. at Wright Memorial Hospital, retiring in 2000. She loved the Lord and was a lifelong member of the Tenth Street Baptist Church.

Surviving relatives include her husband, Bill of Trenton; a son, Bryon Lovell and wife, Cindy of Camdenton; a sister, Cathie Whitley and husband, Jim, Niece Nicole Shell and family, Nephew Trevor Whitley and wife, Emily and family, all of Trenton; a granddaughter, Heather Gier and husband, Anthony; and twin great-grandchildren, Allison and Deacon Gier.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

RUINING THE ECONOMY, WITH VOTERS’ HELP

Do you ever see something in your normal walk through life and say, “That just doesn’t look right?” I did a couple of weeks ago and I think it is a teachable moment.

Read along and you be the judge. Send me feedback if you agree or disagree.

Small bags of ice at a local convenience store are priced $3.19. Let me repeat…frozen water weighing less than 6 pounds cost 319 American cents, and that is before tax.

Now how on God’s green earth did we get here?

Well, you voted for it.

You (or 1,499,002 of your neighbors) voted in November of 2018 to pass a minimum wage increase that took us from $7.75 per hour to $12.30 per hour by January of this year in just five short years.

That is just shy of a 40 percent increase in a couple years!

While I am sure workers enjoyed the increase at first, that dramatic increase over a relatively short time has come home to roost with skyrocket-

ing prices on goods and services.

THAT is how a small bag of ice costs $3.19 ladies and gentlemen.

Still as happy with your increase now that inflation and increased costs are eating most of your “raise”?

Don’t misunderstand, I am pro minimum wage to insure those with few skills or experience are not taken advantage of but increasing it 40 percent in five years is ridiculous! Honestly, it probably should be higher than it was but to correct 25 years of stagnation in five was ill-advised and we are living it now.

That vote was about as well-thought out as the government’s Covid strategy.

While I am not against a minimum wage, I can also argue that it can be harmful as well.

The higher you push minimum wage, the more attractive self-checkouts, automated customer service and shipping jobs overseas gets to business owners.

I guarantee that most wellintentioned voters just wanted to help folks and perhaps themselves by voting entrylevel workers a pay raise.

For Missouri, and many other states, that vote, coupled with Biden inflation have combined to send prices skyward.

So, for instance, a small business that has eight employees, four of which make minimum wage, would see an increase of almost $38,000 in wages for a year just to

comply with the law when it was fully implemented.

That shop owner can either; cut expenses, dip into savings or increase prices to the consumer. Neither of those is a good option, but when you run out of things to cut (where many of us are), you must increase the price of goods and services to make ends meet.

Look, prices rise on most things over time but you would hope that those costs and wages follow a similar path.

When we artificially pumped wages up 40 percent over 4 ½ years, what did we think would happen?

And this pain was not limited to those making minimum wage. What about someone making $12 or more when these increases went into effect? They wanted a raise too.

If I were making $10 an hour before, two and a half more than minimum wage ... I would sure as heck expect to make at least $14.50 after the increase.

Things that begin innocently enough can often spiral out of control, but was it really innocent?

Be careful of anything that begins in the name of “fairness” but ends up painting you into a corner and eventually results in the entire system grinding to a halt and the need for the government to step in and help. Prices are reflecting that dysfunction in our system.

The system is straining under the weight of costs and inflation not seen since the 70’s.

Capitalism needs few rules

to operate and survive and supply and demand usually dictate that prices are reasonable and relatively affordable while skill and competition usually set wages.

Minimum wage jobs, however, were never intended to support a family of four. I hear this argument all the time and it holds absolutely no water.

Entry level jobs are just that, jobs you have when you are young and have little or no experience or skills.

Much like a fairy tale, once upon a time in America, most endeavored NOT to start a family, get married or have children until you could afford that expense and that was usually after you moved up the ladder, out of your parents house and gaining skills and experience. Family and dependents were down the road until you made more money and marketable skills.

Then and only then would you begin to start a family.

That was the plan that was instituted by my father and my father’s father. Not so much anymore.

Times, they are a changin’ and not so much for the better.

Personal responsibility has gone out the window and we now have a victim class that makes every problem they have the responsibility of someone else.

After looking more closely, when someone complains about the price of something I point back at the minimum wage moving forward.

So when you venture out to the grocery store and you have sticker shock, take a step back and realize that meaning well and doing right are not the same. Perhaps “they” wanted to do well by workers with an increase but in actuality those same workers have less buying power than before the “raise”.

The same government that votes you an increase on your salary with the left hand, votes itself a raise by increasing your taxable wages. They give you $4 but take back $2 in the form of taxes.

So the next time you consider being generous voting for a minimum wage increase, stop, sit back and realize that $5 a bag for ice is around the corner if we don’t let capitalism work.

The Beef Industry–Smoke and Mirror “Fundamentals”

by Darvin Bentlage, Southwest Missouri Cattleman In 2022, the United States imported 3.4 billion pounds of boxed beef and 1.6 million live cattle. Through August 2023 the US imported 20 percent more beef than we exported. In the United States, meatpackers and traders can take imported beef and repackage it with a label that reads “Product of the United States”.

Now do I have your attention?

It has been nearly two years since the largest corporate meatpackers were called before Congress to testify about excessive corporate consolidation in the meat industry, increased prices for consumers, low prices for producers and record profits for themselves.

Today, because of corporate consolidation coupled with widespread drought, the cattle herd is at its lowest numbers since 1962. In 1980, the top 4 meatpackers controlled just 36 percent of the U.S. beef supply, and the U.S. had 1.3 million cattle operations. In 2017, the top 4 meatpackers controlled 85 percent of beef production and the number of U.S. cattle operations dropped to 711,827.

With historically high consumer prices, it would make sense that cattle producers are enjoying good profits, but increased prices for consumers don’t translate back to increased prices for cat-

tle producers like me.

The price of food is a main driver of inflation, and meat prices rose more than almost anything with a 12.3 percent increase in a twelve-month period ending in May 2022. During a similar time period, Brazilian-owned JBS reported a record profit of $4.4 billion for the 12month period ending in March 2022–a 70 percent increase, Tyson showed a record $4.1 billion net profit–an increase of 91 percent, and Cargill’s fiscal year ending on May 2021 showed a record $4.9 billion in net income–up 60 percent over the previous 12 months. Brazilian-owned, Marfrig (owner of National Beef) showed a profit of $820.1 million, their largest profit ever.

This example vividly shows how hyper concentration in markets, especially food markets, is harmful to consumers and producers alike.

These same meatpackers also successfully lobbied to abolish Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) for meat.

COOL was passed in the 2008 Farm Bill, and, following its implementation in 2013, cow/calf producers saw an increase in the value of their product until topping out in late 2014/early 2015 with a profit of $518 per calf.

Needless to say, the global meatpackers didn’t like COOL. Along with their allies, including the North American Meat Institute and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, they successfully challenged COOL under the North American Free Trade Agreement, and the World Trade Organization ruled that the U.S. COOL law was illegal under our “free trade” laws.

In 2015, Congress repealed COOL and cow/calf producers profit dropped by 30 percent, the largest one year drop in history. In 2014, a 100-head cow herd produced $51,800 income for the cow/calf producer. In 2021, that same 100-head herd only netted $9,719.

Fast forward to 2023, two years of drought, a lack of feed and farmers liquidating herds–feeder calves hit record high prices in September of $268 per every 100 lbs. (hundredweight), yet, that price dropped quickly by $42 per hundredweight, or 15 percent, in just 2 months. That means producers' profit for their calves dropped $200 a head. The price for a pound of beef has risen to a record $8 per pound while at the same time cow/calf producers are making 14 percent less than what they did in 2014.

The demand is still there, but the supply

isn’t, so why are prices for cattle going down?

One principle reason is because control over the meat industry and our food markets is so concentrated that meatpackers are able to control prices for the consumer and producer alike.

Just like we blame corporate control of markets, we should also blame corporate control of Congress, who should be working to level the field for producers and consumers.

For example, Congress should pass the American Beef Labeling Act (S.52) bringing back mandatory labeling, encourage the USDA to update regulations to enforce the Packers and Stockyards Act and create a Special Investigator (S. 346) that would prioritize antitrust enforcement of the Packers and Stockyards Act, and pass Senator Grassley’s 50/14 bill which would require packers to buy 50 percent of their daily supply from the open market and harvest the animals within 14 days, creating competition and making a step to balance out the market.

Call your congressional representative to give them guidance on bills that would help the cattle producer, and ask them to represent you and the independent family farmer, not corporate agribusiness.

District 6040 Grant Program Chairman Speaks at Recent Rotary Meeting The Rotary District Grant Program was the topic of a program presented at the Thursday, Jan. 18 meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club, held at the BTC Bank community room. Jackie Soptic presided at the meeting, Dan Wilford gave the prayer and Brian Upton was the sergeant at arms.

Program Chairman Don Purkapile introduced Beth Franklin, who is chairman of the District 6040 Grant Program. Ms. Franklin noted that funds donated by members to the Rotary Annual Fund are invested for three years, with the interest from the donations going back into Rotary Districts for distribution to Rotary grant programs.

During the past year (202223), Rotary International funded 1,092 global grants, 473 district grants, 324 disaster response grants and one Program of Scale grant. There were 18 clubs in District 6040 that received $60,569 in grant funding for projects during this time. The current grant cycle has 20 clubs receiving $45,000-plus with funds still available for other projects. Clubs are required to provide a monetary match for grant funds received as well as have “sweat equity” in the project. The Trenton Rotary Club has participated in the District Grant Program in the past and is looking at a couple of projects for next year. Ms. Franklin said that clubs will be able to apply for up to $2,500 in district funds next year and not be

Here are some bills I have cosponsored for this session: HB 1401: Creates the offense of trespass by an illegal alien in Missouri HB 1906: Modifies provisions relating to the assessed valuation of real property. The true value in money of real property for assessment purposes shall be equal to the most recent purchase price of such real property. Such true value in money shall be the true value in money for all subsequent assessments until the next sale of such property. As specified in the bill, if a homeowner

makes additions or improvements to the property, and those additions or improvements increase the value of said property by 50% or more, the homeowner shall notify the assessor. The assessor shall then establish a new assessed valuation, which shall be the true value in money for all subsequent assessments until the next sale of such property. If the sale of a piece of real estate results in a transaction that is below market value, the assessor shall provide evidence to the Board of Equalization or other equivalent entity that such sale price should not be used as the new true value in money for assessment purposes. If a homeowner does not want to participate in the assessed valuation provisions under

this bill, such owner may opt out by notifying the assessor's office, and the homeowners' real property shall be assessed under the assessment process in existence on or before December 31, 2024.

HB 1955: Establishes "The Constitutional Money Act" which regulates the treatment and use of gold and silver.

and application of surgical dressings. Surgical technologists can also take part in the sterilization of equipment/instrumentation for use in surgical procedures by adhering to aseptic practice (preventing contamination).

NCMC is now offering an Associate of Applied Science degree in Surgical Technology. The program is an 11-month program, starting in June and graduating in May. There are 27 additional credits of prerequisites needed for completion of the Associate’s degree that can be found on the NCMC website. Applications for each cohort are due by March 1 for the upcoming class.

The Surgical Technology program completed the initial accreditation process this year with the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA). The approved curriculum is in alignment with the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology 7th Edition. The program also successfully completed their transition to the newly completed Savannah Campus in August and are actively using the state-of-the-art facilities that came along with that transition.

The Grundy County Health Department is a local public health agency established in 1977 to protect the health and safety of the public,prevent illness, and promote wellness among the residents of Grundy County, Missouri.

Directed by administrator Elizabeth Gibson, the Health Department, located at 1716 Lincoln Street in Trenton provides children's and family services, including immunizations for children, participation in the Federal Vaccines for Children program, does lead inspections, and will check carseats for children for compliance with state law. The Department administers prevention-related health services for individuals, from blood pressure checks, and immunizations for children and adults to WIC services for children and families and serves the important role of investigating communicable diseases like whooping cough and tuberculosis and foodborne illnesses like salmonella.

The GCHD came into existence in 1977 by a vote of the taxpayers and is governed by a fiveCelebrating member elected board of community people. The Health Department employs 7 people full-time and three people part-time with employees wearing multiple hats and performing multiple services.

Apple overtakes Samsung Apple for the first time has surpassed Samsung as the world’s top seller of smartphones.

The iPhone-maker shipped nearly 235 million phones last year, accounting for 20.1% of global market share, according to a preliminary count from the International Data Corporation.

That put it just ahead of Samsung’s 19.4% market share, enough to boot the South Korean electronics giant from the No. 1 spot it’s held since 2010. Xiaomi and other Chinese phone-makers make up the rest of the top five.

IDC says overall phone shipments declined 3.2% to 1.17 billion units from 2022 to 2023.

But strong growth in the last three months of the year showed that the market is recovering. Another research group, Canalys, also declared Apple the top vendor for the fourth quarter.

IDC research director Nabila Popal ties Apple’s success to “the increasing trend of premium devices ... fueled by aggressive trade-in offers and interest-free financing plans.”

The drop for Samsung’s phones, which run on Google’s Android operation system, was also affected by greater diversity in cheaper Android phones, especially in China.

SPORTS NCMC Athletics Announces 2024 Hall Of Fame Class Almost every year the North Central Missouri College selects a few individuals or families that were a part of NCMC athletics to be inducted into the hall of fame. This year there are a total of seven nominations chosen to be inducted into the 2024 hall of fame class.

Each week we will highlight a few of those individuals until the offical announcement during the NCMC double header on Saturday, February 10.

North Central Missouri College athletics proudly announces the following individuals, families and teams that will make up the 2024 NCMC Athletics Hall of Fame class. Each will be recognized at the home basketball doubleheader on Saturday, February 10 when NCMC takes on Southeast Community College. Additionally, the 1998-99 Women’s Basketball team will be acknowledged as it has been 25 years since their national tournament appearance, the first in school history.

Karen Bailey – NCMC Women’s Basketball Player 197879, NCMC Women’s Basketball Coach 1981-83 Karen Bailey is this year’s Legacy inductee.

She was an inspirational figure in women’s basketball who earns a deserving place in the NCMC Athletics Hall of Fame for her exceptional contributions. A non-traditional student, she juggled roles as a dedicated mother to her daughters Amy and Kesli while playing under Coach Junior Mullenix. Karen's journey from player to coach symbolizes her unwavering commitment to the sport, embodying resilience and dedication that tran-

scend conventional norms. Serving as a Lady Pirates coach from 1981 to 1983, Karen's leadership and trailblazing spirit broke barriers, supported by her husband Larry, who accompanied her on many recruiting trips across the state. Her impact on the court and her enduring passion for basketball stand as an inspiration, solidifying her place as an esteemed inductee into the Hall of Fame.

Terrance Bush – NCMC Men’s Basketball Player 2014-16 Terrance Bush, a basketball sharpshooter for the 2014-16 Pirates, earns a well-deserved induction into the Hall of Fame, leaving an indelible mark on NCMC athletics. Revered for his electrifying scoring prowess, Bush's legacy is beautifully encapsulated by then Head Coach Steve Richman: "I’m very proud of Terrance. I’m happy to see him rewarded for the countless hours of hard work he put into basketball, a game he loves. A well-deserved honor." According to then Assistant Coach Jeremy Esry, “Terrance was one of the most electric scores that we have ever had at NCMC and a fan favorite because of it. Terrance is still remembered to this day for his long 3’s and ability to put up a bunch of points in a short amount of time. Some of his best games were against our toughest opponents and he was a big time competitor.”

His stats from the 201415 and 2015-16 seasons underscore his exceptional skills, boasting impressive averages of 15.7 and 22.0 points per game, respectively. For the 2015-16 season, Bush was selected as a 2nd Team All-American. His impact also

goes beyond numbers, as he showcased his competitiveness and ability to perform under pressure.

Terrance Bush's induction stands as a testament to his dedication, skill, and enduring contributions to the rich basketball tradition at NCMC. Congratulations, Terrance, on this well-deserved honor, celebrated by teammates, coaches, and fans alike.

In the 2014-15 season he played in 29 games, averaging 15.7 points per game. He had a 48.4 field goal percentage, a 40.2 three-point percentage, a total of 117 rebounds, 51 assists, and 32 steals.

In the 2015-16 season he continued to improve, playing in 27 games. His points per game improved to an average of 22, and his field goal percentage was 46.9, with a 37.4 three-point percentage.

That season he had 201 rebounds, 89 assists, and 47 steals.

The Ralph and Joyce Cutsinger Family The Cutsinger Family has had a profound impact and enduring dedication to the NCMC Athletics family, which has been nothing short of extraordinary.

As eloquently stated by NCMC athletic director Nate Gamet, “The Cutsinger family embodies the true essence of NCMC Athletics, extending their support, commitment, and passion beyond just the confines of the sports arena.” Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jeremy Esry had these comments. “There aren’t too many fans or families in the nation that are as dedicated and loyal to their teams as the Cutsinger’s have been to the NCMC men’s and women’s

basketball programs.

We always know where to look at home games to find them in their seats and it is a very common sight to see them on the road at Region 16 games, the Region tournament and even the National Tournament. We appreciate all the hospitality they have given to our players throughout the years and it is families like the Cutsinger’s who make NCMC such a special place.” Their unwavering involvement, not only as enthusiastic supporters but also as pillars within the community, has left an indelible mark on the fabric of our institution.

Trenton Wrestling Home Quad January 18 - Senior night Quad.

Trenton held the senior night quad against Maysville, Maryville and Lawson in their home gym. The Trenton Bulldog boys team went 3-0 as a team with Senior Brayden Hughs and Senior Gavin Cagle both going 3-0 on the night.

Trenton Youth Wrestlers Travel to State in Springfield Three members of the Trenton Kids Wrestling Club participated this past weekend in the Missouri USA State Wrestling Series held at the Wilson Logistic Arena – Ozark Empire Fairgrounds – Springfield, MO (January 20 & 21, 2024) The Rookie State Tournament is limited to wrestlers who are in their very first

year of wrestling.

There were 866 wrestlers on Saturday in age divisions 8U, 10U, 12U, and 14 & Under Trenton Wrestlers: Liza Curtis, 10 U, 100 lbs placed 2nd with a record of 1 win and 2 losses.

Ally Miller, 12U, 90 lbs placed 2nd with a record of 3 wins and 1 loss.

The 6U State Tournament is for all wrestlers in the state who are six years old and younger on January 1, 2024. There were 483 wrestlers on Sunday.

Trenton Wrestler: Liam Grimes, 6U 46 lbs did not place and had a record of 1 win and 2 losses.

FUTURE SUPERSTAR - Ally Miller match #1415 vs. Aubrey Yokeley of Team Owls Wrestling Club in Marshall. Miller won the match by fall at 4:18.

She placed second at the USA Youth State Tournament in Missouri, after having 3 wins and 1 loss.

Lynch was able to tip it up so that Moore could get it in her hands and score at the block right at the buzzer, the refs counting it good. This would bring the score within four points, South Harrison still leading 31-35.

The fourth quarter would be a game of defense. Soriano would start things off scoring two points. On an inbound play Moore would find Hodge, who would find Croy for two points. To bring the score within one, Moore would find Soriano on a back door cut. South Harrison would come back and take the lead by three, keeping it that way till the last minute of the game.

South Harrison would get fouled and sink both free throws. Croy would sink a big three-pointer to bring the score back to within three.

Free throws would be the Trenton Lady Bulldogs downfall, with South Harrison scoring another one to

extend their lead to four. The South Harrison Lady Bulldogs would advance to the Championship side of the bracket sending Trenton to the Consolation side after a final score of 40-44.

Scorers for the Lady Bulldogs included Soriano with eight, Moore with nine, Harris with four and Hodge with three. Croy would be the lead scorer of the night scoring a total of 16 points, having all seven points for the Trenton Lady Bulldogs in the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs will take on the number six seeded Lafayette County on Wednesday at 4:30 pm.

The Trenton Bulldogs, in the six seed, took on the number three seed Savannah Savages. With Gabe Novak out for unknown reasons, Hunter Smith stepped in to fill the starter’s spot. He would take Seth Doolittle’s spot at center court for the tip off. Smith would win the tip getting it to Keifer Tol-

DEFENSIVE FORCE - Madi Moore plays a big roll on defense for the Lady Bulldogs, defending the basket. She is tasked with taking on the bigger players as well as protecting the high post.

The Trenton Lady Bulldogs traveled to Hamilton to take on their first matchup of the Hamilton Invitational tournament. The number seven seeded Trenton Lady Bulldogs faced off against the number two seeded South Harrison Lady Bulldogs.

At the tip off Kaegen Croy was able to get up quicker and get it tipped to Mirena King. After running their play, a quick pass from Madi Moore to Croy from post to post would get the first two points of the game.

South Harrison’s first points of the game would be a three-point play after making a basket at the post and getting fouled by Croy, getting the free throw attempt and sinking it with ease.

South Harrison would then lead the score board for the rest of the quarter, but not without a challenge from Trenton. A lot of teamwork and a good passing game by both Bulldog teams would end the first quarter 7-9 South Harrison.

The second quarter would start off with Astrid Soriano getting a steal, and then getting a two-point

bucket to tie the game.

South Harrison would come back and score six points causing Trenton to take a timeout to figure out how to break the press. A pass from King to Croy would get things rolling for the Lady Bulldogs again. Moore would also get her turn and score two for the Lady Bulldogs. The second quarter would end with South Harrison leading with an elevenpoint gap, 15-26.

The third quarter would start with both sides missing baskets and getting rebounds. Soriano would be the first to score with a fast break layup. Moore would follow her with her own two points off a pass from King.

With 4:10 left on the board, Trenton would still be down by 11. Jena Harris would step in and score for the Lady Bulldogs, along with Kaylor Hodge, who sunk a three-pointer. The last play of the quarter would have Trenton inbounding the ball from the opposite side of the court. King would get the ball from out of bounds and make her way down the court. She would see Lynch, but South Harrison would

son. Savannah would be the first to score though, scoring eight points before the Bulldogs could get points on the board. Tolson would score the first point for the Bulldogs after missing his first free throw and adjusting to sink the second. The Bulldogs would go on only scoring six more points, four of them being free throws. The first quarter would end with Savannah in the lead, 7 -19.

Savannah would start with the ball in the second quarter, getting fouled by Doolittle and sinking a free throw. Savannah would score five before Tolson was able to make it back to the basket for two. He would go on and score four more for the Bulldogs. Maverick Sole would get fouled and put one of two free throws through the hoop. Bradyn Sager would also sink two free throws for the Bulldogs.

Savannah would be the last to score with a three-pointer at the buzzer. Savannah would take the first half leading 22-35.

The second half would be a tough and aggressive game for both sides. Savannah would be the first to score followed by Tolson and Smith with two each. Savannah would get their fifth team foul during the middle of the third quarter, but with both sides being aggressive the refs warned both coaches that the next unnecessary comment would get a technical foul. Savannah would go on to score five more points after the warning. But after Smith’s shot got blocked, a Savannah comment after the excitement would send the player to the bench with a technical foul.

This also caused a Savannah fan to be asked to leave the gym after trying to defend the player. Tolson would shoot the technical foul free throws making both. Trenton would then get the ball back and Smith would get two more points for the Bulldogs. The quarter would end with Tolson getting fouled and going to the free throw line to make both free throws.

Down by seven in the fourth quarter, Trenton had some ground to make up.

Savannah would again score first, and then both teams would go back and forth

missing shots and getting rebounds. Savannah would get a hot streak and end up scoring 14 in the fourth quarter.

Trenton would only be able to score seven, ending the game with Doolittle getting the last two points of the game. Savannah will advance on to the championship side of the bracket after defeating Trenton 47-67.

Scorers for the Bulldogs included Doolittle with two, Sager with three, Smith with seven and Sole with nine.

Tolson would lead the team with 26 points total, 11 of those points being from free throws. The Trenton Bulldogs will move on to the consolation side of the bracket taking on the South Harrison Bulldogs, who are the seven seed, Wednesday night at 5:45 pm.

HAMILTON TOURNAMENT UPDATES Girls Bracket: Trenton will play Lafayatte County Wednesday at 4:30 pm.

Gallatin will play Penney on Wednesday at 7 pm.

Lathrop will play Savannah Thursday at 7 pm.
