Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?

RT Photos/Jamey Honeycutt

On Monday, January 8, a weather front moved in, bringing with it some rain, a wintery mix, then settling in as snow in the evening. By Tuesday morning, January 9, there was approximately 4.5 inches of snow on the ground, with more snow falling throughout the day reaching close to 7 inches of accumulation by mid-afternoon. Winds gusted from 25-45 mph as the temperatures slowly dropped. Several rural areas were affected by power outages. At right, Levi and Jessica decided to take the opportunity to build a snowman on 17th Street in Trenton as the snow continued to fall.

R-IX Board Discusses GEC Grants Even with the snow and cold, the Trenton R-IX Board of Education met on Tuesday, January 9 in the district office. Those who could make it to the meeting were in attendance, while others checked in via zoom. The meeting was called to order at 5:30 pm, starting with the pledge of allegiance and approval of the agenda and consent agenda items. Candidates for the upcoming board elections have been finalized. Those candidates are Melissa King, Rosie Gray and Bill Miller. Two candidates will be voted on and will serve a three-year term.

The new business portion of the meeting began with discussion about the safety deposit box at Southern Bank. Superintendent Daniel Gott recommended that himself, Michelle Hixson and Shari Claycomb be added to the safety deposit box and Susan Leeper, Mona Loyd, Mike Stegman and Kris Ockenfels be removed. The board approved the recommendation. The GEC grant deadline was extended and had three more applications come through. Christy Grissom would like $1,000 to go towards a therapy dog for the dis-

trict. Kim Foster put in an application for Science and Social Studies equipment for the fourth grade Rissler Students. Tiffany Crawford put in an application to purchase Heggerty Phonemic Awareness curriculum to help students with basic reading skills. There were contracts put in for an NLS coach for the visually impaired and an orientation and mobility coach that will be used to help navigate the school. Bright Futures of Trenton put in a request to have a building to put all their items in. The board discussed their request and decided to

give them a building, but the location is still being discussed to determine the best place for them to be set up. Exciting things happened for Rissler Elementary the last few weeks of school. The third and fourth graders attended an NCMC basketball game and the Kindergarten and first grade classes got visits from the NCMC athletes. The middle school reported about their after school programs and what they are looking forward to this next quarter. The high school highlighted [See R-IX, Page 2]

WMH Retains Local ER Physician Team As of January 1, 2024, Wright Memorial Hospital entered into a new contract with the emergency medicine physicians providing care in the hospital’s emergency department. The new group chosen by Wright Memorial Hospital, Missouri Physician Partners, was formed by Dr. Wyatt Pickering and Dr. Jeremiah

Yerton and keeps intact nearly the entire physician team currently treating patients in Wright Memorial’s emergency department. The hospital’s former emergency services provider, ENVISION Physician Services, alerted Wright Memorial in August of 2023 that they would be closing operations in three

states in which they operated, one of those being Missouri, at the conclusion of 2023. ENVISON employed the local team of emergency care physicians, including the emergency department’s medical director, Dr. Pickering, a Chillicothe native. “We had multiple strong options to replace ENVI-

SION,” said Catherine Hamilton, Interim Administrator and Chief Nursing Officer at Wright Memorial. “It was important for us to find the right fit. We wanted a team that we knew would provide highquality care while also understanding a rural community's unique health needs and challenges. Dr.

Pickering and his team check all those boxes, and because of their local presence, they’re already heavily invested in our communities. We’re ex[See WMH, Page 2]

cited to continue this outstanding partnership.” The new contract took effect on January 1, and patients should experience no changes. The team will continue to offer seamless, convenient, emergency medical care close to home 24/7 for patients in North Central Missouri. “We’re excited to be able to continue the same

level of high-quality emergency care here in Trenton,” said Wyatt Pickering, DO, Medical Director of the Wright Memorial Hospital Emergency Department. “As a representative of Missouri Physician Partners, I want to thank Wright Memorial Hospital for placing their trust in us. We’re committed to providing compassionate, expert care to the Trenton community and the surrounding region.”

their students of the quarter and what they will be looking forward to on the athletics side of things. Mr. Gott reported on scores that got back from the district and what he sees as improvements, as well as places to work on. He also reported on the bid for the roofs that need replaced and how things are almost ready to be finalized. During closed session, the board: • approved the retirement of Muriel Moyers as

THS language arts teacher, effective at the end of the 2023-24 school year. • accepted the resignation of Julie Keuler as TMS science teacher, effective at the end of the 2023-24 school year. • approved a 2-year contract extension for Superintendent Daniel Gott to run through June 30, 2027, with salary to be determined at a later date. 573-751-4285 NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICT To the Great Constituents of District 2, “Change in all things is sweet.” – Aristotle As many of you have seen, I got married in November to a wonderful man named Cole. Marriage is the greatest thing that God has created, and I’ve been so ex-

cited to start this journey in my life as we live in Bethany now! I recently just scored 100 percent on the 2023 CPAC scorecard as one of the most conservative representatives in Missouri. The Session officially started in Jefferson City on January 3rd and will go to May 17th. Nothing of extreme importance has hap-

pened on the House Floor since January 3rd, and I assume nothing will till about the middle of January. I have pre-filed over eight bills and have a few more bills that will be filed in the following weeks. Below are a few of the bills that I have prefiled and I will write more about my other bills in my next report. HB 1571: Prevents foreign countries from owning agricultural land in Missouri and forces any foreign country to sell it back within five years. This is the same bill that I had filed last year. HB1572: Clarifying language allowing County Commissioners to fire a health director if they are not re-appointed. HB 1573: Allows Family Child Care and Group Child Care owners to have their grandchildren and employee's children not in-

cluded in their ratio regarding how many employees they have. Ex: If your daycare has two employees, that daycare would be allowed two grandchildren or children from the employee or owner. This is a fairly small change but would help tremendously with our small daycares. HB1651: Establishes the "Anti-Red Flag Gun Seizure Act.” This is another bill I filed last year and will continue to support as I believe Red Flags take away citizens’ rights to due process. A red flag law is where your firearm can be taken from you regardless of circumstance and without a hearing. HB 1576: Requires schools to present a video on human development when human sexuality is taught. A child's life is a miraculous event that people take for granted. There is something more to a person than some-

one walking down the street or their political affiliation; they are someone who had to go through this entire human development process to grow up to be the person they are today. I think people forget how precious life truly is. It's a pleasure to serve and as always if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to my office at (573) 751-4285 or email me a t Mazzie.Christensen@house. mo.gov

Princeton R-V School Receives AED Donation In a remarkable act of generosity and gratitude, ZOLL Medical Corporation, a leading provider of medical devices and software solutions, has donated a ZOLL AED Plus Defibrillator to Princeton School. This heartfelt donation is made in honor of sudden cardiac arrest survivor, Mr. Scott Lowe, who credits the use of a ZOLL AED for saving his life. The chain of events leading to this impactful donation began when former Princeton students Alyvia "Livi" Binkley and Raven Moreno saved Scott Lowe's life at the Stacy Center on April 12, 2023. Scott, jogging on a treadmill, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest, and the swift actions of Raven, Livi, and other community members, including Dereck Power and Kyle Berndt, proved instrumental in his survival. Following this harrowing incident, Lowe reached out to ZOLL Medical Corporation to express his gratitude and share his story of survival. Recognizing the critical role played by a ZOLL AED in saving lives, ZOLL responded with admiration and decided to

donate an AED to a community organization of Lowe's choice. In a letter addressed to Princeton School, ZOLL Medical Corporation conveyed heartfelt congratulations on behalf of Scott Lowe, a sudden cardiac arrest survivor. The letter highlighted the collaborative efforts of rescuers and first responders, emphasizing the pivotal role played by the ZOLL AED in saving Lowe's life. Lowe, as part of the ZOLL Heroes for Life program, had the privilege to choose an organization to receive a donated AED. His heartfelt choice was Princeton School, a decision that reflects his commitment to promoting cardiac safety within the community. This generous donation not only signifies ZOLL's dedication to supporting communities but also serves as a tangible acknowledgment of the bravery and resilience exhibited by individuals like Lowe and the former Princeton students, who demonstrated the importance of timely and effective response during emergencies. Princeton Schools expresses

Princeton JH/HS Principal Dana Seymour and JH/HS Counselor Heather Hall join Scott Lowe, a resilient individual who, having experienced a life-threatening event, graciously presents a donation for an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to the JH/HS. The generous contribution is in recognition of a previous lifesaving incident where Lowe's life was restored with the help of an AED. Reflecting on the significance of the donation, Lowe, with a touch of humor, quipped at the time of the photograph, “I died to get this donation."

deep gratitude to ZOLL Medical Corporation and Scott Lowe for this life-saving gift. The ZOLL AED Plus Defibrillator will undoubtedly enhance the school's ability to respond to medical

emergencies and contribute to the safety and well-being of students and staff. With this generous donation, the school district will now have a strategically placed AED in each of the three main

buildings on campus: the Stacy Center, High School, and Elementary, further improving our commitment to the safety and well-being of our students and staff.

Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission Congratulates New Members JEFFERSON CITY – The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission congratulates Daniel Hegeman of St. Joseph and Francis Slay of St. Louis on their recent appointments by Gov. Hegeman and Slay replace Brian Treece of Columbia and Robert Brinkmann of Defiance. “We thank both Brian Treece and Robert Brinkmann for their service on behalf of all Missourians in their role as commissioner,” said Ecker. “We express our appreciation for the leadership of Mr. Brinkmann, who served as chairman of the commission and was the first commissioner to chair the executive committee of the

Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety. In his time on the commission and in these roles, he focused tireless efforts on employee safety and public safety.” Mr. Hegeman currently serves as senior community business manager at Evergy and co-owner of Hegeman Farm, Inc. Dan Meers (left), the “KC Wolf” mascot for the Kansas City Chiefs, spoke to all faculty and staff at the annual spring Convocation at North Central Missouri College. In his remarks, Dan encouraged employees to make a difference every day and remain positive and purpose-driven. In his address, Meers said, “Life is like a coin. You can spend it however you would like, but you can only spend it once, so spend it wisely.” He spoke about his life as a mascot, his setbacks, and how he spends each day trying to make a positive impact on the world and encouraged others to do the same. Meers has been “KC Wolf” for more than 30 years. In 2006, he was selected as the first NFL mascot included in the Mascot Hall of Fame. Meers travels throughout the United States and the world entertaining thousands of people both in and out of costume. His enthusiasm, optimism, and love for life are contagious and make him an inspiration to all those he meets. Along with being “KC Wolf”, Meers is also a motivational speaker, author, and family man (danmeers.org). Pictured with Meers is NCMC President Dr. Lenny Klaver.

GM’s Cruise catastrophe Cruise, a driverless taxi service that automaker General Motors once hailed as a quantum leap forward, is turning out be a financial jalopy instead. After piling up more than $8 billion in operating losses during the past seven years, Cruise has been sent to the repair shop while GM tries to figure out what went wrong with the audacious robotic driving startup that it bought for $1 billion in 2016. Cruise’s ambitions blew up in early October after one of its robotaxis dragged a pedestrian to the side of a street in San Francisco after the person was hit by another car. The incident

prompted California regulators to suspend Cruise’s license to operate hundreds of robotaxis throughout San Francisco, less than a month after the expansion was authorized over the strenuous objections of city officials who asserted the driverless vehicles were still too hazardous to be trusted. Regulators also allege Cruise attempted to cover up the severity of the incident. In the fallout, GM jettisoned Cruise’s founding CEO along with about 900 employees. The company also backed off its previous projections that the robotaxi service would bring in $1 billion in revenue by 2025.
