City Election Filings

The following people have filed for positions in the City of Trenton. William Lewis Fisher of 327 Main Street filed on December 15 for 1st Ward Councilman. Timothy Meinecke of 1107 E 10th Street filed on December 19 for 3rd Ward Councilman. Nick McHargue of 503 Town and Country Lane filed on December 16 for Mayor. Jackie Soptic of 310 S Main Street filed for Mayor on December 19. The election will take place on April 4, 2023.

Holiday Closings Announced

Several offices have announced they will be closed for some or part of the upcoming holiday weekend.

The Trenton Post office customer service window will close at 12:00 p.m. on December 24 and there will be no mail delivery on Monday, December 26.

North Central Missouri College will be closed December 23-January 3. Ketcham Community Center will be closed on December 24-25.

The Trenton License Bureau and Green Hills Regional Planning Commission/Missouri Job Center will be closed December 23-26.

The Community Action Partnership of North Central Missouri will close at 3:00 p.m. on December 21 and will reopen on January 3, 2023.

Businesses that will be closed on December 24-26 are Farmers Bank of Northern Missouri, BTC Bank and Grundy County Jewett Norris Library.

Businesses closed on Monday December 26 only will be: Trenton City Hall/TMU, Trenton Area Chamber of Commerce, Grundy County Courthouse, USDA Farm Services, Grundy County Health Department, North Central Missouri Children’s Advocacy Center, Citizens Bank, Farmers State Bank, North 65 Center and Grundy Electric Cooperative/PWSD #1.

The Trenton Republican-Times office will be closed from December 24 through January 1 and will reopen for regular business hours on Monday, January 2. The newspaper will be published weekly as normal.

Area School Boards Approve Audits

Pleasant View R-6

The Pleasant View R-6 Board of Education met on Tuesday, December 13. The meeting was called toorder. The agenda, minutes, financial statements and bills were approved.

In the open forum, Avery McCauslin gave an update on the Pleasant View Community Club.

In old business, an update was given on the new guttering and exterior coating of the 3rd-5th grade wing. The goal is to have these items completed in the summer of 2023. It was further discussed to paint the exterior of the buildings and update the ground work around the playground equipment.

The board approved the 2023 school insurance renewal from MUSIC for the amount of $23,345.

The 2021-2022 annual audit and the Safe Return to in Person Instruction and Continuity of Service Plan were both approved on a 6-0 vote.

Utility Committee Approves Clarifier Bid

The Trenton Utility Committee met on Tuesday, December 20 at City Hall. Those in attendance were City Administrator Ron Urton, Comptroller Rosetta Marsh,Councilman Danny Brewer, and committee members Brad Griffin and Steve Reid. Mayor Linda Crooks, Councilman John Dolan and committee member Kenny Ricketts joined the meeting via zoom. The meeting was called to order by Danny Brewer.

In department reports, Electric Supervisor Brad Griffin reported the electric department is working on finishing tree trimming, changing out AMI meters and routine maintenance.

Water Plant Supervisor Steve Reid reported that preliminary lead sampling results have come back and they are good.

Water/Wastewater Supervisor Kenny Ricketts reported that they are still working on water meters.

The lead service line inventory data is time consuming but they are progressing forward with the mandated information for the EPA.

Comptroller Rosetta Marsh gave a review of monthly financials. She also reported that they have currently installed 2,150 AMI meters and have approximately 750 more to install in the next two years. Work is continuing on the new ERTS and Composite lids on water meters, currently 95 percent of the meters are reading through the Tantalus System. The city is continuing to add inserts to the bills to urge customers to take advantage of the online bill payment system.

In the Utility Directors report, the reservoir pump station foundation, under slab piping, floor slab and exterior walls have been constructed. The sewer

An update on the upcoming board election was given. There have been four board applications received from Damien Little, Ben Thomas, Tim Miller and Casey Kitchen. There are currently three positions with three-year terms expiring. The election will be held on April 4, 2023.

Grundy R-5

The Grundy R-5 Board of Education meeting was held at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14.

In old business, the board heard a report on the construction of new doors at the high school and elementary. The work is to be

completed over Christmas break.

The board reviewed and approved the Return to Instruction Plan and the audit for the district.

In new business, the board reviewed a technology safety plan and approved the district’s CSIP.

Skylar Bonnett was chosen as the MSBA Belcher Scholarship representative for the district. She will now proceed to regional competition.

The board heard a report on the three open filings for the board. The only person to file as of the meeting was incumbent Zachariah Kasinger.

A proposal was approved from Community Building Solutions to replace all of the lights and fixtures in the district with LED lighting. The upgrade will cost the district $73,966 to be paid in five yearly installments. The cost is projected to be covered by the savings of electricity costs by using the LED lights.

The board reviewed a proposal from School Insight, a student management system, web based information software. No action was taken at this time.

Reports were presented by elementary and secondary principals.

In a closed session, the board approved the resignation/retirement of paraprofessional Julie Lentz, effective at the end of the school year.

Japheth Busick was hired for the junior varsity boys coach.

After the superintendent evaluation, the board agreed to offer a one year contract to Phil Fox for the 2023-2024 school year. Salary will be determined at a later date.

The next regular board meeting was set for 6:00 p.m. on January 10, 2023 in the high school business room.

Laredo R-7

board met in regular session on December 12. The meeting was called to order. The agenda, minutes and bills were accepted.

The buildings and grounds improvement, transportation and furnace were discussed with no announcements made.

The MUSIC Insurance Renewal was not received. The 2021-2022 school audit was approved. Board training has been completed.

The following schedule was recommended for candidate filing for the board election. The candidate filing period is held from 8:00 a.m on December 6 to 4:00 p.m. on December 27. The school office will close at 1:00 p.m. on December 16, 2022 and reopen on January 3, 2023 at 8:00 a.m. The office will also be closed during inclement weather. On the last day of candidate filing, December 27, the office will be open from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The three-year terms of Casey Bowe, Sarah Lowery and Jason Meeker are up for re-election.

The Laredo Spelling Bee will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 17, 2023.

Discussion was held on the USDA Grant, the response to standards on the MSIP 6 and the SRCSP.

The 2022-2027 CSIP was approved.

The meeting was adjourned to a closed session with no announcements made.

The next regular scheduled meeting will be held on January 9, 2023.

Spickard R-2

The Spickard R-2 Board of Education met on Thursday, December 15. The board approved a payment of bills totaling $94,815.47 and approved a transfer of $35,000 from general fund to capital projects.

Budget amendments with revenues now totaling $1,153,492 and expenditures now totaling $1,122,218 were approved.

The 2021-2022 Annual Audit was approved by the board.

There have been no

candidate applications for the three seats available for the April 4 election. The candidate filing ends December 27, the school office will be open that day from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Reviews of the CSIP and SRCSP were conducted with no changes or actions taken.

The Playground Project was discussed and final plans should be received in the next week.

A resolution was passed opposing open enrollment.

School will not be in session from December 19 to January 3. There will be a teacher in-service day on January 3 with school resuming on January 4.

A Top Pirate and Honor Roll Assembly will be held at 3:15 p.m. on January 5, 2023 in the school gymnasium.

The January board meeting has been moved from January 16 to January 23.

Princeton R-5

The Princeton R-5 Board of Education met on December 12. The consent agenda consisting of minutes, bills and financial reports were approved.

The school board election filing dates for the April 4 election are December 6-27. The three seats up for election are Rick Ellsworth, Karla Meinke and Marcie Davis. As of noon on Tuesday, December 13, there havebeen four to file for the board, Marcie Davis, Karla Meinke, incumbents and Chet Ellsworth and Mitch Reger.

The school will not be in session December 17January 3. A teacher inservice will be held on January 3 and classes will resume on January 4.

In old business, the board approved the annual Auditors Reports from the firm of Conrad and Higgins. The board tabled the review of board policies until the January meeting.

The board approved the renewal of liability and property insurance with CPSK and MOPERM at a cost of $92,803. This in an increase of $10,322 from the previous year.

A resolution was approved for participation in the MOCAAT and the Instrument of Adoption. The program includes a full

range of investment options and services including online transactions and reporting. The program offers investments that maintain safety and liquidity while providing a competitive yield.

The board adjourned to an executive session with the following announcement. Sawyer McCallon was approved as assistant baseball coach for the spring 2023 season.

The next board meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11, 2023.

Gallatin R-5

The Gallatin R-5 Board of Education met on Thursday, December 15. The meeting was called to order. The agenda, minutes and bills were approved.

The principals and activities director presented their reports to the board.

The board reviewed the only bid received for snow removal for the 2023 school year. The bid from Salmon Excavating was approved in the amount of $1,100 for snow removal and if ice melt is needed, per application.

Mark Higgins of Conrad and Higgins LLC presented the final 2021-2022 audit report. Approval was given for the CPSK Liability and Property Insurance renewal.

Amy Holder and Brittney Ghidoni gave a presentation for the Gallatin Community Teacher’s Association.

The board adjourned to a closed session with the following announcements. Joyce Cox was hired for a part-time Middle School Counselor positon for the remainder of the 20222023 school year. Sue Bird was hired as a Paraprofessional for the remainder of the 2022-2023 school year.

A review of the Belcher Scholarship applications was discussed. Hadley Jumps was chosen as the MSBA Future Builders Belcher Scholarship representative for the district.

On a 7-0 vote, the 20212022 school audit was approved as presented.

The next school board meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18, 2023.

treatment plant met with the engineer about a bar screen and a plan was adopted to adjust the slope of the incline to prevent material logs from forming at the bottom. The HVAC repairs have been made in the headworks building.

There were two bids received for the water plant clarifier modification, one from Irvinbilt Constructors from Chillicothe and one from David E. Ross Construction Company out of Raytown. There was $1.73 million budgeted for this project.

Irvinbilt Constructors

had the lowest base bid of $1.733 million which was a little over the budgeted amount but with inflation costs rising it was the best bid. A suggestion of adding on an additional $35,000 to pay for a coating for the concrete was discussed. The coating is like an epoxy and would help to protect the concrete from cracking and help it to last longer. This would make the bid increase to around $1.768 million, which is the bid amount the committee agreed upon and will take to the city council for approval.

A motion was made by John Dolan to adjourn the meeting.

Billy J Stiles, 96, Trenton, (formerly of Princeton) passed away December 18, 2022 at his home.

He was born November 28, 1926 on the farm in Mercer County. Bill was the third child of Don and Nella Stiles. Donnanell, his sister, was the oldest child followed by his brother, Harley.

Bill attended the Topsy country school. The school was close enough to the farm that he could run home for lunch and get back in time to play before the bell rang. After grade school, Bill attended Princeton High School. He graduated in 1943 at the age of sixteen. After graduation he worked on the family farm until he was eighteen.

When he turned eighteen on November 28, 1944, he was drafted in the Army on December 3, 1944 to serve in World War II. Bill was sent to Fort Sill, OK for Boot Camp. After Boot Camp, he was sent to Fort Riley, KS, where he was in the Field Artillery. He thought he was going overseas. He was at the train station with his whole division when a VIP came and named 16 soldiers not to go. Bill was one of those and was sent to Fort Bragg, NC where he was a Fire Control instructor.

After the Army, Bill enrolled in the University of Missouri in 1948 and graduated in 1951 with a B.S. in Agricultural Economics. He was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho

Nancy Menefee Wade died Wednesday afternoon, December 14, 2022, while residing in Sunnyview Nursing Home in Trenton. She was 88years-old at the time of her death.

Nancy was born June 25, 1934 in Trenton, the daughter of Dr. L.D. and Mrs. Helen Menefee. She was a 1952 graduate of Trenton High School. She attended Christian College, now Columbia College, in Columbia and Northwest Missouri State University.

Nancy married Dr. Leland R. Wade on February 14, 1954. Dr. Wade preceded her in death on February 21, 1989.

Billy J. Stiles

fraternity and the Alpha Theta Honorary fraternity. After college, Bill returned to the farm and was in a partnership with his father, Don and brother, Harley. Later, they splitup, with Harley taking over the Registered Angus Cow herd and Bill feeding out cattle and hogs with his dad. Through the years, Bill made many deals, buying and selling cattle with a handshake and, to the best of his knowledge, always satisfactory to both parties.

In 1954 Bill married Mary Ellen Hagan. They were the parents of three children, Charles Michael, William John, and Susan Nell.

Bill was a proud farmer and had the reputation as a hard worker. He liked being outside, even in bad weather. He lived in the house and farm he was born in and loved for 81 years until he retired, moving to Trenton. In his free time, Bill liked to play bridge, visit with friends, attend family dinners, read a good book and keep on top of the political situations.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Nella; his brother, Harley and wife, Amber; his sister, Donnanell and husband, Herschel Gaddy; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jack and Nell Hagan; and his brothers-in law, Jim Hagan and Jim Price.

He is survived by his wife Mary; his three children, Mike (Gloria) Stiles, William J (Darla) Stiles and Susan (Saied) Esfa-

Nancy was an avid golfer, bridge player, seamstress, and Kansas City Chiefs fan. She was active in the Trenton community, serving as a member of the Riverside Country Club, Chapter AD, P.E.O., Daughters of the American Revolution, and Wesley United Methodist Church. She was also elected to serve as a school board member for the Trenton R-IX school district. After Nancy relocated to St. Joseph, in 1990, she volunteered as a St. Joseph Diplomat with the city’s Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include son, Russ Wade and wife, Kim of Trenton; one daughter,

hani; his seven grandchildren, Lance Stiles, Celia Stiles, Ashley (Chris) Baker, Dane Stiles, Deri Stiles, Kevin (Jolene) Esfahani and Alec Esfahani; and his two great-grandchildren, Kennedy and Bennet Baker.

Bill took extreme pride for the military service of his grandsons: US Army (Kevin Esfahani, Alec Esfahani, Lance Stiles), National Guard (Dane Stiles), and his grandsonin-law: US Airforce (Chris Baker).

Bill was a member of the Methodist Church. He believed in God, working hard and taking great care of his family, the farm, the cattle, and even his horse and dog. Goodbye Bill Stiles! We will all miss you.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 7, 2023 at the United Methodist Church in Trenton, under the direction of Roberson Funeral Home of Princeton.

Burial with Military Rites will follow in the Topsy Cemetery in Princeton.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at Roberson Funeral Home in Princeton.

Managing The Future of Our Newspaper

The study showed that spending in those communities rose, on average, 30%.

Now, I am not saying that all of that was nefarious activity but it makes sense that when there is very little vetting or accountability, public servants are more likely to spend tax money in ways they might not if they thought their voting record might be splashed in 24 point type.

More than a few times in my younger reporting days, I felt a groan ripple through the council chambers when I would show up and sign up to ask a few questions on the night of a large vote.

If we aren’t here to report the good and the bad, who will?

Thankfully, that is not a concern Trenton needs to fear for the immediate future but there is a lesser concern that is keeping me up at night.

Today, common sense plays a much larger role in putting out a quality community newspaper than fancy prose and literary knowledge. We have spell check and most people understand to avoid dangling participles in polite company.

Newspapers are important to a community. No surprise there, you are reading one now so I know I am preaching to the choir.

Studies have been done by Notre Dame University that studied communities that had a newspaper and then didn’t due to it going out of business.

The findings were not good.

Not only did the community begin to lose its identity, but needed information went generally unpublished and therefore known by the population. Meetings were less publicized and since there was no one in the media to ask questions and hold anyone accountable, the cost of government generally went up.

Who will our lead reporter/editor be moving forward?

Recently Amy Morton let it be known that she would be leaving us to pursue opportunities as a tax preparer full time. I knew that was a possibility when she began covering meetings and was happy when she took a larger role in recent months.

With her leaving us at the end of the year, I am looking for someone to cover a few city and county beats and help coordinate the news that goes into each edition.

Now, Amy leaving does not leave us dead in the water by any means. We still have a dedicated group that will bring your paper to life on a weekly basis. First, as long as Anita Ewing is with us, we have a

That is where our news reporter/editor plays an important roll. From selecting articles, to calling for quotes and additional photos, this person will be key in determining what you see in the paper each week.

DISPOSITION IN CATTLE – CONVENIENCE TRAIT OR ECONOMICALLY IMPORTANT?

In my opinion, disposition is one of the most overlooked traits that beef cattle producers should be selecting for. Most all of the breed associations now have EPD’s (expected progeny differences) for disposition. Disposition is a moderate to highly heritable trait (.37). This heritability indicates that significant progress can be made by selecting for more docile cattle.

We all know that calmer, quieter cattle are easier to handle and process. In addition, they are also safer for the human handlers involved. Most beef producers are in the business to make money and most would agree that they prefer gentle cattle. However, the question most ask is do gentle cattle make more money? Research in this area is somewhat limited.

However, Dr. Darrell Busby published a study in 2009 that summarized data from the Tri-County Carcass Steer Futurity that had some

interesting findings. Cattle were evaluated for disposition based on chute scores and exit velocity from the chute. When comparing quiet or calm cattle to aggressive cattle, calmer cattle had higher average daily gains, lower feed to gain, lower death loss and higher percentages grading Prime and Choice.

Also in 2009, Berg reported that cattle with higher exit velocities had significantly higher toughness in their steaks based on Warner- Bratzler shear force values. Another study conducted by Voisinet in 1997 showed that feedlot average daily gain was reduced by .40 pounds per day when temperament scores ranged from calm to continuous movement in a chute.

In summary, disposition is definitely a convenience trait and also one that has economic importance. More cattlemen should be selecting for improved disposition, especially if they are retaining ownership through the feedlot phase.

Grand River Garden Club Decorated Items For Festival

Grand River Garden Club members decorated a tree and finished a trio of signs labeled Peace, Joy and Love for the Festival of Trees when the group met November 21 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

They also put finishing touches on a small Radio Flyer wagon decorated with holiday decor and a six-paned window painted by Diana Hoppe.

Mrs. Hoppe provided baked potatoes with toppings provided by members for a noon lunch. Linda Carman provided ice cream.

Members attending were Marilyn Booth, Linda Carman, Annie Forman, Carolyn Forman, Mrs. Hoppe,

Dorothy Taul, Linda Lamp, Ginny Johns and Karalyn Thompson.

A Christmas white elephant gift exchange will be held at noon December 19 at Washington Street Restaurant.

Justin Reeter took his sons to St. Joseph on Friday, December 2, to Krug Park. It is a free admission experience that has a drivethrough loop from Thanksgiving to January 2, that features the largest holiday lights display in northwest Missouri.

Laredo Lion members Bonna Dittberner, Dan and Carol Wilford, and Dean Smalling enjoyed an evening Christmas dinner at the Wild Onion on Monday, December 5. Bonna picked up Dean from Sunnyview where he now resides.

After the meal, they sang a few Christmas

carols and played some word puzzles that Bonna brought. Bonna also brought little Christmas table decorations, as well as chocolates and packages of hot chocolate that she shared with everyone.

The next regular Lions Club meeting will be on Monday, January 23, at 6:30 p.m. at the Laredo Community Building.

On Tuesday, December 13, Carol Wilford drove to Kansas City to attend the Northland Christian School music program which was held at the Vineyard Church. Carol’s daughter, Mary Gonzalez is the vocal music teacher.

Rotary Presents Paul Harris Designation

Jeremy Clevenger and Drew Smith presented the program at the December 15 meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club, held at the BTC Bank community room. Michael Orsmby presided at the meeting, Brian Upton was the sergeant at arms and Dan Wilford gave the prayer.

Clevenger, a certified public accountant, recently established an accounting office in Trenton, Clevenger and Associates, after purchases of both the Sager Tax Service and the firm of Lockridge and Constant. Clevenger works in the offices at Chillicothe while Smith is with the firm in Trenton. Clevenger said he has been involved in the accounting business since he was 16, working with his father, who was a CPA in the Parkville area. He established an office in Chillicothe in 2014, when he purchased the accounting business of Scott Stephens, then came to Trenton in 2021 when he purchased the tax business belonging to the late Pam and Dean Sager. The purchase of Lockridge and Constant at Trenton was made during the past summer. There are 25 employees at all of the Clevenger and Associate

offices. Bruce Constant, one of the owners of Lockridge and Associates, is remaining with the Trenton office and will also continue offering financial services.

Smith works at the Trenton office and is currently studying for his CPA exam. Both Smith and Clevenger are involved in the Boy Scout program, which is how they met. Clevenger is also a member of the Chillicothe Rotary Club and Smith has applied for membership in the Trenton club.

During the business meeting, Daniel Gott and Doug Tye were presented with a Paul Harris Fellow. The Paul Harris Fellow is awarded to members in recognition of their service to Rotary International, with a $1,000 donation to RI having been made by either themselves or by others on their behalf. The Trenton Rotary Club is a 100 percent Paul Harris Fellow club, meaning all members have received at least one Paul Harris designation.

The club will meet again at noon on Thursday, December 22 at the BTC Bank community room. Trenton’s own Santa Claus, Tom Stickler, will present the program.

Governor Announces Honor for Chillicothe Businessman

One of Chillicothe’s most prominent ambassadors has been named to the Academy of Missouri Squires. Gov. Michael L. Parson has announced that Ed Turner is among eight new members of the academy.

The academy was established in 1960 and is limited to 100 living members who have made lasting contributions to their community, state and/or nation.

Other inductees to the Academy of Missouri Squires this year are: Sly James, David Kemper, Charlie Kruse, Ron Richard, Rhonda Vincent, Ray Wagner, and Margaret Wilson.

The induction was scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 20, at the Governor’s Mansion in Jefferson City.

Turner is a 1958 graduate of Central High School, St. Joseph, and earned his bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Missouri - Columbia. He was named a Missouri 4-H Representative to the 1960 White House Conference Children and Youth. In 1962, he joined the U.S. Army Reserves and became a partner on his family’s farm.

Turner moved to Chillicothe in 1967 with his wife, Lois. In 1972, he became campaign coordinator for a former college roommate, Jerry Litton, in his bid for Congress. Turner followed Litton to Washington, D.C., and became his administrative assistant and chief of staff, from 19721975. There, he founded the U.S. House of Representatives Administrative Assistant Association. Turner served as the vice president of the Jerry Litton Family Foundation since its inception in 1977.

Turner has been an insurance and real estate broker for the last 47 years and is CEO of EST Enterprises, in Chillicothe. At 82 years of age, Turner not only remains active in the firm’s day-to-day operations but this businessman, who grew up on a dairy farm in St. Joseph, continues pouring his time and talents into civic endeavors and promoting ways to improve life for current and future generations.

A proven communicator and problem solver, Turner identifies needs, proposes logical solutions, and inspires others to work together to reach a common goal. His efforts have stretched across business, politics, economics, education, youth, and family.

Community leaders fondly refer to Turner as “Mr. Chillicothe” because of his passion, involvement and communication skills and being chosen as the spokesperson for many projects. He was called upon to give tours to prospective businesses officials, lead community betterment campaigns, and has emceed many events celebrating the completion of specific endeavors.

Turner is a past president of the Chillicothe Industrial Development Corporation and continues to serve as president of Chillicothe Development, Inc., a position he has held for nearly 25 years. Turner, along with other forward-thinking individuals, helped establish Chillicothe’s industrial park in 1990. The town’s rural

north Missouri location and its small population are obstacles to overcome when attracting new businesses; but, focusing on the community’s assets helped land six industries, including a Fortune 500 company.

The businesses in the industrial park employ a combined workforce of 400 people, and only one space in the park is vacant.

Turner served as chairman of Chillicothe’s airport board to help ensure that Chillicothe would have the infrastructure to meet the needs of prospective industries as well as existing businesses.

Extending the runway to accommodate light jet aircraft, installing a taxiway system and building a larger hangar were among the projects either started or completed during Turner’s time on the board.

Turner served as chairman of the YMCA’s $3 million Capital Campaign, which raised money for construction of a YMCA in Chillicothe, a project almost unheard of in a community the size of Chillicothe.

He also had chaired the Committee for Dependable Energy (a revenue bond election committee for which the measure passed with 97 percent of the vote), the Committee for Clean Water (an election committee for a sewer system which passed with 90 percent of the vote), and for an increased school tax levy in Chillicothe.

Turner has served in a number of local, regional, state, and national leadership capacities, as evidenced by his membership on the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of Northwest Missouri.

Through his association with the University of Missouri - Columbia, Turner served two terms as chairman of the Flagship Council of the University of Missouri.

He was a member of the Advisory Council of the Kellogg Commission, which included 22 college and university presidents to define the future of land grant colleges and universities.

Turner is a past member of the Board of Curators and served as board president in 1989. He was a delegate to the Council for Agriculture Research, Extension and Teaching in Washington, D.C., from 2003 to 2017. He also is a member of the Missouri 100.

Turner is a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho - Theta Chapter at MU, and served as the fraternity’s capital campaign chairman, leading the successful effort to raise $2 million for a new Theta Chapter House. Turner also is a recipient of the Coleman Club Hall of Fame Award.

Turner’s induction into the Academy of Missouri Squires is the latest of many accolades he has received. From the University of Missouri, Turner was named recipient of the Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 2011, the highest alumni recognition. He also received the Geyer Award for public service to higher education, University Extension’s Gordon Warren Land Grant Award, the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Mumford Distinguished Service Award, the Citation of Merit from the College of Agriculture, the Faculty-Alumni Award, and the State Friend of University Extension Award.

He received from Missouri 4-H, the Director’s Award for Outstanding Service to Missouri 4-H Programs. In 2021, Turner received Chillicothe Area Chamber of Commerce’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Turner acknowledges that his accomplishments are made through the support of a unique group of people with whom he has worked. He always is quick to point out that “people make the difference.”

Turner enjoys not only the challenges to improve the way of life for others, but he embraces the opportunity to work with others on a common goal, strengthen his existing relationships, and develop new friendships.

NCMC Recongizes Employee

Submitted Photo Whitney Trump, Director of Regional Programs from Trenton, MO (hometown Galt, MO), has been selected as North Central Missouri College’s Outstanding Employee for December. Whitney, an NCMC alum, holds an MBA and has been employed at NCMC for 14 years.

Whitney describes her job as helping make college attainable. Whitney said, “my favorite thing about NCMC is the people.” Whitney was instrumental in the recent successful HLC accreditation self-study submission and visit. She also has rebranded the dual enrollment program as the early college program and was able to offer free textbooks for dual credit students.

In the future, Whitney would like to see continued growth in partnerships with high schools in the 17county service region and create personalized degree plans for all dual credit high school students.

Each month, nominations are submitted by faculty/staff members for an outstanding employee they feel is hardworking and dedicated and has made NCMC overall a great place.

Toy Drive Nets Over 400 Items

More than 400 items were collected during the toy drive organized by Wright Memorial Physicians’ Group, Saint Luke’s Mercer County Clinic, and North Central Missouri College Athletic Department. The toys will benefit children in Grundy and Mercer counties. “This was the first year that Wright Memorial Physicians’ Group and Saint Luke’s Mercer County Clinic partnered with the NCMC Athletics Department for the toy drive and it definitely exceeded our expectations," said Shane Lynch, Practice Manager for Wright Memorial Physcian Clinics. "It’s so humbling to see our community come together to make the holidays a little bit brighter for some kids in our area."

NCMC Pirates Baseball to Host Coaches Clinic with Kansas City RAD

North Cental Missouri College is collaborating with the Kansas City Royals Amateur Development System (RAD) for the “Winter Warm Up” Baseball Coaches Clinic. This event will be held at Ketcham Center in Trenton on Sunday, February 5, 2023.

The clinic is designed to meet the needs of all coaches, novice, youth, high school and college level. The clinic will cover a variety of baseball topics including practive organization, pitching, fielding and hitting.

Discussions will focus on mechanics and philosophy plus the sharing of ideas, drills and tips. Special breakout sessions will be available for all levels of coaching which will be designed to cover the basics up through advanced instruction.

The day’s schedule will begin with opening remarks at 9:00 a.m. A lunch break will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.. Lunch will be on your own, however there will be a meal option available onsite. The clinic will wrap up at 4:30 p.m.

Clinic speakers will be Mike Arbuckle-Senior Advisor of the KC Royals; John “Duke” WathanFormer Player/Manager of the KC Royals; Shon PlackManage of Sport Development of the KC Royals and Donnie Hillerman, Ryan Suttenfield and Jared Fry-Coaches of the NCMC Pirates.

$700K USDA RISE Grant Primes Green Hills RPC and MOSourceLink to Grow Agriculture Jobs in Northwest Missouri

The Show Me Jobs project, a new partnership between MOSourceLink and Green Hills Regional Planning Commission fueled by $727,919 in funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Innovation Stronger Economy (RISE) Grant, will aim to create jobs, increase sales, start new businesses and spur more positive economic outcomes for five counties in the rural Green Hills Region of northwest Missouri over four years.

The project will deliver technical assistance to build business capacity, increase supply chain connections, learn about agricultural business needs, connect entrepreneurs to resources and increase the visibility and awareness of value-added agricultural businesses and resources.

“This partnership and funding allows us to help more entrepreneurs and fuel the economic agricultural engines of our rural communities in Northwest Missouri,” said Corinne Watts, executive director at Green Hills Regional Planning Commission. “We can’t wait to see how this opportunity will strengthen the economy in the Green Hills Region.”

The five counties part of this project are Grundy County, Harrison County, Mercer County, Putnam County and Sullivan County. MOSourceLink and Green Hills RPC will be seeking partnerships within the communities in these counties to achieve the goals of the grant.

Specifically, the four-year outcomes of the project include the following: 100 existing businesses will report increased capacity through the addition of new jobs, increased sales, increased knowledge and/or capital infusion.

20 new businesses and 150 jobs will be created.

5 businesses will access debt funds through revolving loan sources.

4 businesses will increase sales by becoming part of the supply chain for urban corporations.

MOSourceLink will offer its key services of monitoring and filling gaps in the entrepreneur ecosystem and connecting entrepreneurs to experts and key organizations in the massive statewide network of 680+ business-building nonprofits.

“We’re proud to be able to leverage our statewide network to prime the pump for economic growth in the Green Hills Region of Missouri,” said Alexces Bartley, network builder at MOSourceLink. “With our deep experience in connecting entrepreneurs to resources across Missouri, we’re thrilled to be able to lend our expertise to boost entrepreneurship in a vital agricultural region of the state.”

To increase jobs in the Green Hills Region, the project will take a variety of approaches. The organizations will work alongside community leaders to leverage entrepreneurship as an economic development tool and work to better understand business development and workforce needs of the agribusiness cluster. Partners in the region will provide business-building technical assistance in startup, business planning, marketing, financing and other topics to startup and expanding businesses. Also part of the program is increasing businesses’ access to capital, increasing connections to the supply chain and increasing visibility and awareness of value-added agribusinesses. Networking events, educational workshops and other events will help connect entrepreneurs and service providers.

“Our mission at USDA Rural Development is to boost rural economic development by funding technical assistance for small business owners and entrepreneurs,” said Kyle Wilkens, state director of USDA Rural Development Missouri. “We help them design robust business plans, find new markets and promote their goods and services. This investment is a prime example of how our agency carries out that mission.”

In October, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced more than $703 million to fund 41 projects in 22 states that will improve port facilities through the Maritime Administration’s Port Infrastructure Development Program. The funding made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Missouri was awarded a grant totaling $8,768,800 for a Port Improvement and Expansion Project in Brunswick, Missouri. Green Hills Regional Planning Commission will be the Public Sponsor on this Port Improvement and Expansion Project for AGRIServices of Brunswick, LLC. The Project will upgrade an existing port terminal with a new container dock and related mooring structures, add a new rail spur with a loading pit, and construct a new bulk agricultural supply building with conveyors between the rail and barge dock. The new sheet pile barge dock will provide 200 ft. of frontage for loading and unloading barges. The rail improvement consists of approximately 4,000 ft. of new track that will permit the port to work 36 car unit trains. The 360 ft. by 140 ft. bulk agricultural storage building will replace an existing 40-year-old building and offer enough capacity to manage peak periods of agricultural commodity movements.

NCMC Receives Clean Audit Report and Hears Update on Savannah Campus

In communication items, Trustees were introduced to new employee Ashley Bonnett, Campus Store Associate-Retail Operations. Vice President of Academics, Dr. Tristan Londre discussed the Savannah Campus progress and plans and the sonography program. Rick Sharp, Industrial Technology Instructor discussed fall courses at Savannah and brief description of courses offered.

Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Kristen Alley briefed the board on a recent VA compliance audit, probation and suspension numbers, and provided student comments from college seminar. Chief Information Officer, Jennifer Triplett provided an update on the Savannah Campus IT infrastructure and progress at the site.

In the President’s report, Dr. Lenny Klaver discussed fundraising efforts and the capital campaign, end of semester efforts, a possible agronomy partnership with MFA, the coordinating board funding formula, Bethany nursing pinning ceremony, a recent visit with the Governor, Savannah Campus, Pirates basketball, Holiday Hoops, census data, and provided an article regarding the future of higher education.

In business items, Trustees approved the purchase of property/casualty/liability insurance through the Missouri United School Insurance Council for the 2023 calendar year and approved payment to WilsonToellner for accounting services for the Northeast WDB audits. Matt Wal-

lace from KPM CPA and Auditors provided the trustees the annual audit report and discussed the results. NCMC received a clean and unmodified opinion for its audit, which is the best possible outcome. Trustees approved the fiscal year 2022 annual audit as presented.

In personnel items, the trustees approved Head Start resignations from Maggie Peters and Connie Wilson. They also approved Head Start hires Brittany McDaniel, Teacher Aide at Unionville, Kelly Crumpton, Teacher Aide at Chillicothe, Damarius Summerville, cook at Chillicothe Head Start, Marissa Woodard, Teacher Aide at Brookfield, Mazzie Bellet, Teacher Aide at Brookfield, and Raielle Lurten, Teacher Aide at Bethany.

In NCMC personnel items, Trustees approved the hire of Kaitlyn Mounce as Library Assistant II-Testing Center Coordinator and Melanie Baker as Student Accounts Specialist. They also approved Matthew Wiggins as a Clinical Instructor and Heidi Moffatt and Jackie Price as Adjunct Instructors. North Central Missouri College has also purchased property located at 1409 Main Street in Trenton.

The next regular session of the North Central Missouri College Board of Trustees meeting will be on January 24, 2023 in the Frey Administrative Center at 5:30 p.m.

Wrestling tournament shows progress

Over the weekend the Trenton Bulldogs and the Gallatin Bulldogs took place in the Battle of Katy Trail at the Missouri State fair grounds. Both teams had both girls and boys teams entered into the competition.

The Trenton Bulldogs had four finish in the top five. Among them taking first place in his weight class of 190 pounds was Sam Gibson. Gibson went into the first place match against a young man from Richman taking the match with a decision of 3-0. Gibson currently sits with a season record of 17-0. Coach Charlie Bacon was happy with Gibson’s progress this season, “I was really happy with the way that Sam wrestled this weekend because he got to his offense and was able to

pin five of his six opponents.”

The Gallatin Bulldogs had a total of six wrestlers finish in the top five. Among those top five Abby Parker (170) and Eli Sperry (106) finished 2nd in their respective weight classes.

As Christmas gets closer, let me remind you about all of the ways I have been nice this year. I think you will agree that being nice, cleaning the house and being kind to my friends supports my humble opinion on this topic.

It's that time of the year again. I want to let you know that, in my opinion, I have most certainly been very nice this year.

First, I have been nice by using my safe hands with my friends and teachers. Next, I have been nice by sharing with my sisters. Finally, I have been nice by working hard on all of my schoolwork.

As you can see, this year, I have been very nice and would like to ask for new colored golf balls, new colored golf clubs and Shape puzzle.
