SOIL AND WATER PRESERVATION A PRIORITY FOR MISSOURI FARMERS
For those of us living in Missouri, agriculture is truly all around us. There are nearly 28 million total acres being devoted to agriculture. That is roughly of the entire state! For all of this, we should be thankful. Any creek, field, or livestock you have seen all come from the hard work of farmers of all different kinds. In order to protect agriculture and preserve land and water in Missouri, it takes partners teaming up to increase sustainability.
The Nature Conservancy works with Missouri’s growers/farmers to sustain the health of rivers, creeks, and streams. Projects such as natural plant buffers along rivers and creeks help prevent erosion. When erosion happens, nutrients and soil infiltrate water, killing plants, fish, and other aquatic life. Missouri is also the leading phosphorous contributor in the Mississippi River Basin. These are found naturally and can be attributed to waterfowl waste, atmospheric deposition, weathering of geological phosphate material and plant composition. They could also be human induced which can include fertilizer, pet waste, agricultural and urban runoff, industrial and domestic sewage, or faulty or overloaded septic systems. This leads Missouri Farmers to focus on preserving land and rivers.
Farming is vital to all of us in Missouri, but even more important is protecting our land and water, to keep agriculture sustainable in Missouri for years to come. It was very eye opening to learn just how fragile our agricultural environment can be. When swimming or fishing in a pond, thank a farmer. When driving by fields of crops or pastures of livestock, thank a farmer. And when you see our land being farmed in sustainable practices and our waterways being protected, remember to thank a farmer.

While Missouri farmers and conservationists are focused on preserving the land and rivers, they are also looking for the best way to produce more food. One of the greatest assets to farmers are soil scientists. Their job is to test the soil, analyze soil pH, organic matter, nutrient levels, ammonium, fertility levels of the principal nutrients, and the moisture content. To support proper soil fertilization practices, the Missouri Fertilizer Control Board recommends utilizing the The Four Rights fertilizer program. These 4Rs are the RIGHT fertilizer source at the RIGHT rate at the RIGHT time in the RIGHT place. This program was launched in 2018 and thousands of acres across the state have enrolled since then, with a goal to enroll 250,000 acres by 2025.

Hello, my name is MATT KROHN
I’d like to announce my candidacy for Circuit Judge for the Third Judicial Circuit of Grundy, Harrison, Mercer and Putnam Counties. I am currently the Associate Circuit Judge of Mercer County and have been since January 2015. Before being elected judge, I practiced law with the Andereck Evans Law Firm in Trenton for 17 years and was a Partner the last 10 years with the Firm.
I graduated from Princeton High School in 1990 and Magna Cum Laude from Benedictine College in 1994. I earned my Juris Doctor degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City Law School in 1997.
I have had a strong working relationship with the last two elected Circuit Judges with whom I served – the Honorable Jack Peace and the Honorable Thomas Alley.
During his battle with cancer, I helped Tom with court appearances and day to day responsibilities, while he handled the Presiding Judge duties. I also was appointed by Judge Alley as Acting Presiding Judge when needed.
Shortly after his passing I was appointed Interim Presiding Judge by the Missouri Supreme Court on April 6, 2023, and I served in that capacity.
During my nearly 27 years of legal experience in the law, I have tried and presided over numerous jury trials.
I have been married for the past 26 years to Kelly (Coon) Krohn from Spickard. We have three children, Logan (age 22), Lauren (age 20) and Landon (age 17). We’ve made our home in Mercer County since 2004 and run a small family-owned beef cattle operation.
I look forward to visiting and meeting as many of you as I can in the next several months. If elected, I will work hard and will faithfully and impartially serve as your next Circuit Judge. I would greatly appreciate your vote on August 6th!
