WITHOUT FARMERS, WHERE WOULD WE BE?

“Agriculture is our wisest pursuit, because it will in the end contribute most to real wealth, good morals, and happiness.” – Thomas Jefferson. Although said in the 1700s, these words are just as true today. Employing over one billion people and providing $1.3 trillion dollars of food yearly, farming proves to be one of the most important and essential occupations to date. Farming is what keeps this world spinning and without it and the hardworking farmers where would we be?

Without farmers the vital elements of life would be no longer. From the food you eat to the roof over your head, farming is what keeps the world spinning. Providing shelter for all, along with nutrients that fuel us, and fuel that drives the economy, a farmer’s job is never finished.

Without farmers the strong economy our communities are built upon are no more. The stability of the land is essentially gone and the many advancements made over the years would be erased.

Due to farmers commitment and dedication we as people receive the necessities of life. For many, wondering where their next meal is going to come from isn’t a worry because of the many farmers supporting their lifestyle. Farmers are who allow us to live fulfilled lives with an abundance of happiness. Because of them we are given the essentials and so much more.

Not only do farmers give us the needs of life but they hold a sense of respect that is hard to achieve. Working hours on end, late nights, early mornings, a farmers integrity can never be questioned. Farmers are those who we need to look up too and strive to be like. We should strive to have the attributes of a farmer: accountability, passion, perseverance, knowledge, and above all dependability.

Without farmers the life you have come to love is gone. So, be sure to thank a farmer. Not because you’re told but because you understand without them life as we know it would be completely turned around. Some might think, from the outside looking in, farming is simple and luxurious, but for those who truly know what a farmers life is like, trust it’s certainly not simple.

Like Dwight D. Eishenhower said “Farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil and you’re a thousand miles from the corn field.”

The City of Hamilton is now accepting applications for Manager, Assistant Manager and Lifeguards at the Hamilton Municipal Swimming Pool for the 2024 season.

Responsibilities include lifeguarding, teaching swim lessons, admission attendant and concessions. Manager and Assistant Manager will be responsible for daily operational duties.

Judge Adkins serves on the Supreme Court Judicial Education Committee, has presided as a Special Court of Appeals Judge on the Western District, and was the recipient of the 2023 Associate Circuit Judge Award of Excellence from the Missouri Supreme Court. Adkins is frequently appointed by the Supreme Court to complex, high-profile Circuit Judge level cases throughout the State, and by the 43rd Circuit’s presiding judges to conflict cases within this circuit. Judge Adkins’ experience prepared him to assume Judge Elliott’s duties during his recuperation from a life-threatening accident in March, 2023, through the end of the year. Adkins also served as the supervisor of the 43rd Circuit Juvenile Office for several years, and acted as interim Presiding Judge numerous times.

“I am a conservative Judge who applies the law as it is given by the legislature, fairly and effectively,” said Adkins. “My 25 years experience as a Judge, hearing hundreds of Circuit Judge level cases, and serving as Interim Presiding Judge has prepared me to be ready to act as the Circuit Judge for Division II on day one.” Adkins added, “Everyone deserves to be treated with respect, and have their matter heard in a timely fashion. I intend to continue to do both as your Circuit Judge.”

Adkins said of Judge Elliott, “Judge Elliott has faithfully served the citizens of the 43rd Circuit for 24 years as both an Associate Circuit Judge and Circuit Judge. Over half of that time, he served as Presiding Judge, and crucially he navigated this Circuit through the COVID pandemic, bringing common sense and leadership in a difficult time for us all. During Judge Elliott’s time on the bench, he has been a mentor and good friend, and I wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement.”

In 1986, Adkins graduated from Gallatin R-V High School, then attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1990. In 1994, he graduated from the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Law, and immediately thereafter passed the Missouri Bar exam. He then practiced general law out of his office in Trenton, Missouri, with the law firm of Miller, Seidel, Havens & Adkins, LLP for over six years.

Adkins is a life-long resident of Gallatin, Missouri, and is the 4th member of his family to serve in an elected position in Daviess County. He currently serves as President of the Daviess County Library Board, was the past president and member of the Gallatin Rotary Club, a past member of the Gallatin R-V School Board and Daviess County Junior Livestock Show Board, and is involved in many other civic and service organizations.

Judge Adkins has the support and endorsement of all the Sheriffs, Circuit Clerks, and Prosecuting Attorneys in all five counties within the 43rd Circuit.
