FARMERS PLAY SPECIAL ROLE IN VALENTINE’S DAY GIFTS

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching and although you might be making last minute purchases for your valentine, the floriculture industry has been preparing for months.

Valentine’s Day is one of the most significant holidays in the floriculture industry. Floriculture includes production of cut flowers, potted flowers, floriculture materials, garden plants, and so much more. In 2019, Americans spent almost 1.9 billion dollars on flowers for Valentine’s Day, which accounts for 25% of the holiday market share.

The single most sought after flower on this special holiday is the rose. More than 250 million roses are grown and cut for the sole purpose of Valentine’s Day. Although roses are grown year round, many growers use data and science to optimize production during February. In order to increase production for February, the procedure for pruning the bushes is modified. This process is started in mid-October, the stems and smaller sprouts that are left will then grow again and bloom the last few days of January and the first few days of February. After the roses are cut and harvested, there is a race for time to keep the flowers as fresh as possible. So, the next time you see those perfectly cut flowers, in many beautiful shades, in perfect arrangements, remember to ‘Thank-A-Farmer’.
