FARM-TO-TABLE
Farm-to-table is a term that can mean many different things to different people. There is no exact definition to this saying but in its honest form, farm-to-table means that the table is actually at the farm and then the chefs would prepare the food at the farm and also maybe even out in the field. It is a social movement when consumers choose natural, often organic, locally produced foods over imported or processed alternatives. It allows us to have easy access to fresh, healthy food all year round as well as supporting local economies and knowing where it comes from.
Many people don’t know where their food actually comes from and they just buy it from the store thinking nothing about it. Farm-to-table wouldn’t have become what it is today without helpful farmers helping out families and restaurants.
It's important that restaurant owners understand what the farm-to-table movement is and its history to know the pros and cons of opening a farm-to-table establishment and knowing how it works. Some restaurants establish relationships with farms and buy directly from them rather than buying through a distributor or large corporation. Farmers benefit from doing this by making more profit than they would in the market and actually knowing what their food is going to be used for making them efficient. Restaurants benefit from this because they are getting products that are good quality and fresh. Food waste costs a lot of money in landfills per year and farm-to-table helps reduce that a lot.
Farm-to-table can be easily liked by restaurants because of the quickness and freshness of the products they receive. The farm-to-table has grown throughout the years because of the many restaurants that have started doing business with the local farmers around their area to receive fresh quick produce.
