AQUACULTURE-UNDERAPPRECIATED FARMING

Living in a small town or rural area means there isn’t always a lot to do. However, any pond, river or lake is stocked with all kinds of activities, especially fishing. Missouri is home to great fishing opportunities, from outstanding lakes and rivers to simple farm ponds. Great fishing takes great management, and an often overlooked sector of agriculture is responsible for helping keep our waters stocked with all kinds of fishing opportunities.

Aquaculture is breeding, raising, and harvesting fish, shellfish, and aquatic plants. We could look at it like farming in the water. Aquaculture is a responsible source of commercial products and food, helps create healthier habitats and is used to rebuild stocks of threatened or endangered species. One of the most common forms of aquaculture in Missouri are fish hatcheries, and Missouri is home to several fish hatcheries that produce fish such as catfish and bass to trout and paddlefish.

Let's take a look at Bennett Springs Hatchery located near Lebanon, Missouri. Around 1900 the Neosho National Fish Hatchery stocked the Bennett Spring river with rainbow trout. This was very popular so a hatchery was built to maintain the trout population. The hatchery is owned and operated by the Missouri Department of Conservation and provides approximately 400,000 rainbow trout each year. These fish are let out from March through October in small batches, every night, in Bennett Springs State Park. Other hatcheries, such as the Harrison Hatchery, focus on different species of fish for use in pond and lake stocking.

Harrison Hatchery, a family owned and operated business near Hurdland, Missouri, specializes in production of crappie and bass for pond and lake stocking. They have 75 breeding and holding ponds for their fish. Fish are bred and put into holding tanks until laying their eggs. A female crappie will lay between 5,000 and 10,000 eggs once a year during spawning season. After laying, the breeding fish are released immediately back into the pond. Once eggs are fertilized, it only takes 2-3 days to hatch, and the newly-hatched fish are released back into ponds within four days.

Once I began to research this topic, it quickly became clear there is a lot of work put into aquaculture that is easily underappreciated. Next time you're fishing, thank a farmer. Next time you’re eating fish or seafood, thank a farmer. Aquaculture may not be the type of farming and production agriculture we typically think of, but the farmers involved in this industry work hard to produce not only food, but a widely enjoyed hobby across Missouri, so please remember to thank a farmer.

HELP WANTED

The City of Hamilton is now accepting applications for Manager, Assistant Manager and Lifeguards at the Hamilton Municipal Swimming Pool for the 2024 season.

Applicants must be at least 15 years of age and must be able to get certified in lifeguarding/water park/first aid/CPR/AED before the beginning of the season.

Responsibilities include lifeguarding, teaching swim lessons, admission attendant and concessions. Manager and Assistant Manager will be responsible for daily operational duties.
