Paxton jumps on top of the examination table. . . with a little help from his mom.

Paxton is not feeling well. So his mom has taken him to see the doctor.

Paige has come along.

But only because she likes to see her younger brother suffer.

Paxton likes his doctor but hates going to the doctor.

It seems like every time he goes, she pokes him.

In the examination room, Paige and Paxton enjoy looking at all the photos of their doctor’s patients.

Both Paige and Paxton take a moment to think about how cute they were as babies.

Caring for children is definitely their doctor’s perfect fit.

A perfect fit is something that you love to do. In Puzzleland, all the puzzle pieces are different, but each has a perfect fit.

It’s what makes Puzzleland perfect.

“Hi everyone,” says the doctor. “I hear you’re not feeling well, Paxton.

What’s the problem?”

“My throat hurts,” says Paxton.

“Open wide,” says the doctor. “Hmm. Your throat looks inflamed.”

Inflamed? Paxton begins to think the worst.

So does Paige. “Does that mean he needs a shot?”

“No. It means his throat is puffy and red,” says the doctor.

Next, the doctor takes Paxton’s temperature.

Then she wipes the tip of a cotton swab all over Paxton’s throat.

Paxton gags a little.

“I’m going to send a throat culture to the lab,” says the doctor.

“I think a tiny creature might be responsible for your sore throat.

Let’s find out.”

“Tiny creature?” ask Paige and Paxton in unison.

“Yes. Sore throats can be caused by tiny creatures,” says the doctor.

“They’re called microorganisms.”

“Mi-cro-or-gan-isms?� repeat Paige and Paxton.

Paige and Paxton like to learn new words, especially big ones.

“Yep. Microorganisms,” says the doctor. “‘Micro’ means small, and ‘organism’ just means ‘living thing.’”

“Words can be easier to understand when you break them into their pieces.”

“There are tiny creatures living in Paxton’s mouth?” asks Paige.

“He definitely needs a shot.”

“Microorganisms are living in Paxton’s mouth and in yours as well,” says the doctor.

“It sounds like you need a shot too,” says Paxton.

Paige and Paxton are perplexed.

“Hmm. This is a good time for you to learn about microbiology,” says the doctor.

“Follow me. We’re going on a short field trip.”

“Where are we going?” asks Paige.

“Here to the lab. They’ll use this sample to find out which tiny creature is making you sick.”

“Hello,” says the doctor. “This is Paige, Paxton and their mom.

Paxton has a sore throat. That’s why I brought them here to learn more about what you love to do—your perfect fit.”

“I would like you to meet my good friend and Puzzleland’s best microbiologist. He loves microbiology.”

“Microorganisms are fascinating,� says the microbiologist.

“Imagine the tiniest thing you can see.

Microorganisms are even smaller.

They’re so tiny that we can’t see them with our own eyes.”

“If we can’t see them, how do we know they’re here?” asks Paige.

“We can see them with a microscope, a powerful tool that makes things appear bigger than they are.

Others we can see when they’re crowded together.”

“We don’t see much of them, but they’re a big piece of our world.

Microorganisms are everywhere.”

“There are microorganisms that make us sick.”

“But microorganisms do a lot of good things too.

There are microorganisms inside our bodies that help us stay healthy.�

“There are microorganisms that help keep our world clean by eating dead plants and animals.�

“And we couldn’t enjoy some of our favorite foods without them.”

“So when will we know if they’re making me sick?” asks Paxton.

“We’ll know for sure in a few days,” says the microbiologist.

“In the meantime, I want you to gargle with salt water,” says the doctor.

“Drink lots of liquids, and you can also have cold treats such as ice pops.”

“This was fun,” says Paxton to himself.

“No shot, a cool field trip and ice pops too.”
