“Sit still. I’ll buckle your seat belt,” says Paige.

“Stop it! I can do it myself,” yells Paxton.

“Okay, you two. Stop it right now,” says Papa Puzzle.

“I’ll buckle both of your car seats.”

Paige and Paxton are sister and brother.

Paige is six years old, and Paxton is five. Paige is older.

In her mind, that makes her in charge—of everything.

That’s why Paxton has been working on two apps—one to eat his veggies and one to make big sisters disappear.

He’s not doing well on either...

Paige and Paxton’s dad is taking them to visit Grandpapa Puzzle.

For Paige and Paxton, getting there is half the fun.

They like to see the sights of Puzzleland almost as much as they like to see Grandpapa Puzzle. They like the different buildings. They like the different colors.

They like that all the puzzle pieces are different, but each has a perfect fit. A perfect fit is something you love to do.

It’s what makes Puzzleland perfect.

At least, that’s what Grandpapa Puzzle always says.

Both Paige and Paxton love to spend time with Grandpapa Puzzle.

Grandpapa Puzzle is fun for Paige and Paxton to be with because they learn about old things.

Grandpapa Puzzle is the oldest puzzle piece in Puzzleland.

He is also Puzzleland’s only paleontologist.

Paleontology is science.

Science is the way we find out how things work and why things are the way they are... in this world and beyond.

Paleontology is the way we find out how things were a long, long time ago.

Paleontologists love bones.

They dig up bones. They study bones.

They learn how things used to be from bones.

Paleontologists also love fossils.

Fossils are plants and animals saved in rocks.

Paleontologists learn from fossils, too.

“We’re going to take a trip back in time to when dinosaurs roamed our land,” says Grandpapa.

“Dinosaurs were big animals.

There were different types of dinosaurs.�

There were dinosaurs with horns.

There were dinosaurs without horns.

There were dinosaurs that ate plants.

And there were dinosaurs that ate other dinosaurs!

Paige and Paxton love learning about dinosaurs with Grandpapa Puzzle, but they’re puzzled.

Paige and Paxton are puzzle pieces, but they don’t like being “puzzled.”

Paige and Paxton know what to do when they’re puzzled.

They ask questions.

“Where are the dinosaurs now?” ask Paige and Paxton.

“There are no more dinosaurs,” says Grandpapa. “They disappeared a long, long time ago—even before I was born.”

Paige and Paxton are amazed. Before Grandpapa Puzzle was born? “That must have been at least a million years ago,” say Paige and Paxton.

“Yes,” says Grandpapa with a smile.

“About 65 million years ago, to be a bit more exact.”

It’s time for Paige and Paxton to ask more questions.

“Then what good is all this now?” ask Paige and Paxton.

Grandpapa Puzzle laughs.

“Our history is a piece of who we are,” says Grandpapa.

“Learning about animals, plants and events in our past helps us to understand why things are happening now. It can also give us clues about things that may happen in the future.”

There’s a knock at the door. “That must be your dad,” says Grandpapa. “It’s time for you to go home.”

Paige and Paxton start to moan and groan. They love to come to Grandpapa’s house. They hate to go home.

“We’re learning all about bones and fossils,” says Paige.

“And dinosaurs!” adds Paxton.

“It’s called paleontology,” explain Paige and Paxton proudly.

“Really?” says Papa Puzzle. “We learn something new every day.

Or should I say we learn something old every day?”

Paige and Paxton give Grandpapa Puzzle a big hug and kiss goodbye.

On the way home, all Paige and Paxton talk about are bones and fossils and dinosaurs. Paxton even forgets about making big sisters disappear. . . at least for now.

Grandpapa Puzzle always gives Paige and Paxton something to think about. That’s why he’s such an important piece of their lives.
