This Issue. Welcome to the first issue of 2016! This edition of the magazine is all about the mix of classic and contemporary, a trend that began more than a decade ago and is still going strong. In the aftermath of 9/11, the world of interior design moved from the coolness of minialism to the familiarity that came from the traditional - vintage pieces redolent with memories and old-style decorative techniques such as patterned wallpaper. Over the years the trend has evolved – modern design objects have taken on forms that hark back to the past and traditional materials have become highly sought by contemporary product designers and architects. The beautiful homes in this issue are all old properties that have been transformed into spaces that are modern yet remember their heritage. Also, on page 23, stylist Jennifer Jo Barth celebrates marble, wood and metal, a triumverate of traditional building materials now being used in a thoroughly modern way. Even food gets in on the act, with traditional ingredients used to create dishes using that very now fast supper staple - pasta. Finally, regular readers of the magazine will notice that the picture at the top is different! I am thrilled to be taking the reins of HOMEWORKS, such a well-respected and loved title. The magazine looks a little different in parts, and we‘ve introduced an international house into the mix – with design and architecture a global industry, seeing how people live around the world seemed like a logical thing to do. I hope you enjoy it all!

TV STAR Bucking the trend for super-slim televisions, is the new TV from Samsung. Designed by French designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, better known for their think-outside-the-box furniture and installations, the brothers‘ first foray into the world of technology is this stylish TV that features an I-shaped frame. Named Serif, after the typography term for the small line attached to the end of a letter, the television deliberately has a softer, less technological feel. ‘Serif TV deploys shapes and colours that have broken away from the usual themes of masculine, cutting-edge technology and extra-large size,‘ says Erwan. ‘... it is made to sit naturally into the world we live in.’ The frame comes in ivory white, dark blue and red, and can sit on a shelf or sideboard, but also has V-shaped legs enabling it to stand alone. Its ‘curtain mode’ gives viewers access to a clock, apps, Bluetooth speakers and their photo gallery. The design process included drawings, computer models and prototypes in wood and clay and took three years. It was definitely worth the wait... From Sound Machine.

Pantone’s annual choice of Colour of the Year is not just about picking a pretty shade of paint for the wall – it is a chromatic response to the times in which we live. This year, reflecting the great amount of turbulence and uncertainty in the world, the colour experts have chosen two colours that individually and together create a feeling of calm. Rose quartz, a pale pink, is described as ‘a gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure’ and Serenity, a pale blue, as ‘weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times’. So, how do you use them in the home? First, you don’t need to stick to the exact pantone colours – a variation will work too. Walls in a dusky pink teamed with a greyblue sofa, with accents of pink, copper and monochrome gives a softly modern look. On its own rose quartz works well with pale grey and white, especially if it’s lifted with pops of metallic sheen. Add shots of bright yellow for a sunny colour scheme. Serenity blue also looks chic with white, the neutral shade softening the darker shade. It also complements leather beautifully. Or use it as a calming influence in a brighter, busier colour scheme.

With metallics, in particular copper, continuing to be a strong trend, it is no surprise that Dulux chose gold as their colour of the year for 2016. ‘Gold and tones of gold are being used everywhere in the design world,’ says Rebecca Williamson, Senior Colour Design & Content Manager at Dulux. ‘It is a recurring colour and material at design fairs and in graphic design as well as in architecture, fashion, beauty and interior decorating. As
metallics continue to add that feel good factor into our homes, this earthy gold-inspired hue will offer that little touch of glamour in an authentic and personal way.’ A matt, ochre colour, use Cherished Gold as an accent wall to add rich colour. It looks good with other strong shades and dark woods, as well as this year’s Pantone colours. Be inspired to add a golden touch to your home through accessories that give a space a shot of warmth and shine.

If you have a modern home... G Choose old tiles or new ones with a traditional Maltese pattern. Tile one room or space such as an open-plan living/dining area or kitchen. Layer on a rug in winter for warmth and texture. A plain rug is the easiest to use - pick a colour in the tiles to co-ordinate the look; or choose a completely different one for a style contrast. A vintage or traditional style is great for warming up a plain floor. Use your walls. Cover one wall with Laminat click boards for a wood effect, or apply limestone for an old stone look. Wallpaper will also introduce pattern and texture that’s a contrast to the plain walls. If you have high ceilings, hang a statement pendant light such as a chandelier or a design classic from the 20th century. Introduce an old-style sofa. The curves of a worn leather Chesterfield or mid-century-style sofa soften a squarer stream-lined look. . If you have a leather sofa, add a traditionalstyle fabric armchair. Or, if you have a sofa in a plain fabric, introduce a patterned one in an armchair, or go for leather. Memories. If you have one, introduce a family heirloom such as a sideboard or chest of drawers. It not only gives a different feel, there’s also the impact of the memories behind the furniture. Accessories: head to flea markets, carboot sales and charity bazaars for second-hand vases, ornaments, mirrors, table lamps... Ornate gold frames or wide wooden ones give a luxurious feel to pictures. Try the Sunday morning flea market at Birgu; search newspaper for details about auctions and house clearance sales; the website maltapark.com also has an antique section.
If you have an old home... Create an accent wall. For a light, airy feel, paint the room white, but on one wall use a brighter colour. A plain, elegant wallpaper on one wall will work well too. Instead of strong pattern, choose a plain but textured rug for extra visual and tactile interest. G As with a new property, mix up styles for a more dynamic look. Choose a modern sofa but include a traditionalstyle armchair. Team a modern dining table with vintage-style chairs. Hang a chandelier, but team it with a modern floorlamp. Instead of fancy frames, choose simple black, white or pale birch ones, or even go frameless. Add vases that have a great shape but not strong pattern. Place modern candelsticks on the mantelpiece.

fell in love with it. When researching branding and type we only ever found links to foreign websites so we created an online resource about Maltese design for people to use and take inspiration from. Later, Ed began working with Kat and she came on board. Her grandfather was a sign-maker so she has a good pedigree! When Ed and I were studying design together we sought out obscure bars to work from. Many had all the original signage and we
You see a strong continental influence in the techniques used, and these were adapted to fit Malta’s needs and restrictions at the
times they were created. For example, many of the signs were made using gold leaf behind painted glass, however, as this method could only be afforded by some, sign-makers resorted to off-cuts of mirrors and pieces of glass sourced from glass cutters nearby. These were bought for pittance and stuck to a board behind a pane of painted glass, with the shapes of the letters left clear on the glass to reveal the ‘mosaic’ underneath. To make the process even cheaper, sign-makers would
use crumpled tin foil that gave the letters shine and allowed light to be reflected at different angles. What are three of your The Aladdin advert in Merchant’s Street, Useful Bazaar in Republic Street and Hollywood Stationer & Bazaar in Republic Street, Valletta. The Aladdin sign was one of the first signs that taught us to stop looking at our feet while we walk through the streets and instead look up and admire the beauty above head-level.
MONKEYING AROUND To celebrate the Chinese Year of the Monkey, designer Marcantonio Raimondi Malerba has created a trio of Monkey Lamps for the Italian brand Seletti (seletti.it). Each is made of resin and holds an LED lamp. The standing monkey is 54cm high, the hanging 76.5cm and the seated, 32cm high. Also catching the simian mood is Estudio Campana, run by the hip Brazilian design duo Fernando and Humberto Camapana. Their limited edition Monkey rug is hand-knotted in Nepal and an impressive 120 knots per inch. The rug, which is shaped like a monkey, can be made to any size and is made to order from nodusrug.it. CIAO BELLA! One of Italy’s oldest furniture brands, Poltrona Frau is known for iconic pieces of furniture such as the 1930s Vanity Fair armchair which became an archetype of the modern chair. A leather specialist, its seating was used for the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles in 1963, and the company has also done seating for prestige car companies such as Alfa Romeo and Maserati. From next month, Satariano will be launching Poltrona Frau in Malta and in the showroom will be a number of pieces including beds, sofas, coffee tables and armchairs including the Vanity Fair. NEWS FROM THE FAIRS The first couple of months of the year sees three major interior design fairs take place, launching a number of new products – Maison & Objet in Paris, IMM Cologne and the Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair. This year the trend for linear shapes and designs stood out, from lighting inspired by the tangled vines of the forest to stackable totem ceramics. As well, two long standing trends - traditional pieces given a modern twist and the mixing of materials - continued to flourish. Here are some of our favourite stand-out designs…
L Ovalle: a stackable collection of ceramics consisting of a set of four containers that can be arrange vertically. The lines on the ceramics are printed in black and silver and appear on the inside and outside surfaces of the ceramics, allowing for a variety of compositions to be created when stacked.
L a striking design that’s the result of a dialogue between designers and artisan craftsmen who worked together to create a light that reflected the vision of the designers and the skill of the bamboo weavers.

he story of this apartment begins in the 1920s when the building in which it is found was first constructed. At that time the
building was rather grand, not just the tallest in Valletta, but the only one with a lift, as well as a uniformed concierge. During the Second World War, however, it was hit by a bomb, and in the decades that followed never regained its former glory. By the time Reuben Lautier bought the sixth-floor apartment in the mid-noughties all that remained of the original structure were the walls and the high ceilings. ‘I loved it because it was full of light and had character but the apartment had been butchered,’ says Reuben. ‘The original floor and apertures had been removed, the floor stopped short of the balcony and the bathroom was tacky.’ Reuben immediately replaced the ugly aluminium window frames with timber but then turned the lock and left the property until time and resources allowed him to return. This did not occur for nine years – in that time Reuben opened his own architectural office and bespoke natural stone workshop; and Valletta once shunned as a place to live, became one of Malta’s most sought-after addresses as the character of the capital and the worth of its historic homes began to be fully appreciated. Reuben, having worked out of the Valletta offices of architects Architecture Project for six years, had come to love the area and had been searching for a home in the city for two years. ‘In Valletta you feel like you belong, it has a sense of place that’s defined by the urban fabric and the fortification walls,’ he says. ‘It’s a small city but with a lot of character and

you can connect to it. In the morning you see people opening their shops or having coffee; you hear the church bells... It makes for a very nice lifestyle and transcends a sense of community.’ It was 2014 when he finally set about transforming the 130 square metre space into the stylish property you see today, the combination of beautiful materials, a sharp eye for balance and attention to detail creating a home that feels modern while remembering its past. ‘I wanted it to have that Parisian mood while remaining contextual to the city and 040

DINING AREA: Reuben designed the brass pendant light that hangs over the dining table, giving this space style and personality. The two-sided low-slung console with its mid-century modern vibe is made with cross-cut mahogany veneer. ‘I wanted the look and feel of a musical instrument,’ says Reuben. It divides the eating and lounging areas – in one side it stores crockery and glassware; in the other items more associated with a living room. HALLWAY: The apartment’s wonderful feeling of calm begins in the hallway, with the panelled walls and marble floor. Paintings propped on the floor, here and throughout the apartment, give a relaxed vibe. ‘I like the feeling of a work in progress – but I also don’t want to hammer nails into the walls!’ says Reuben. The cane chair in a perfect circle, by Vincent Sheppard, adds a softening, organic touch. The kitchen and shower lead off the hallway.

KITCHEN: ‘It’s space-saving but I also like the feel,’ says Reuben. A mix of stainless and blackened steel and brass with marble give a light industrial look. The cabinets and island are bespoke, made from a marine ply carcass clad in stainless steel. A contrast to all the shine is the hood of blackened steel, with brass trim. The workstop is of bianco Carrara marble.

wenty-five years ago, with two young children and a boxer in tow, Helen and husband Camilleri were looking for more space. They found this spacious 19th-century Balzan house, complete with the two elements that were a must - the garden and garage. At the time, pine furniture was all the rage, along with pastel-coloured soft furnishings. The original dark oak rustic kitchen was also kept and the layout retained the traditional formal sitting and dining room popular at the time, as well as a separate family room. Also, one of my pet dislikes is clutter, so I wanted to ensure that everything had a place and surfaces could be kept clear.’ And so the old house was opened up to create a large living area with enough seating space for the whole family to sit and watch television together, and to also have a dining area close to the kitchen. ‘I felt that it was essential to make use of the whole house - no more formal sitting/dining room! - and that it was designed to reflect the way we lived,’ says Helen. The bedroom was done later after Helen was forced to rebuild a wall in an upstairs bathroom. This in turn led to the renovation of the main bedroom and upstairs bathrooms, a project designed and managed by Sandy Bonnici. ‘The old bedroom was created out of mismatched pieces of furniture and Helen wanted a more cohesive design, better storage space and very importantly, proper lighting,’ says Sandy. The family lived in the house throughout all the 047

building work – and it was not easy. ‘It was absolute hell, even though I knew it would all be worth it in the end,’ she says. ‘I had to close an eye to living in dust, and there were times I was practically camping. SPACES HW A1930s house with an open-plan living space, it has an amazing view across Sydney harbour. Jacqui Fink, the craftswoman behind the knitting label Little Dandelion and her lawyer husband, Eric, did little more to the place than paint the floors and walls white. This lightened and brightened the house, but also created a neutral backdrop for the couple’s eclectic range of art and objects which finds ancient antiques and distressed painted furniture sitting side by side with the slick and contemporary. ‘Blending old and new has been a consistent theme in our lives. It’s not carefully planned, we just gather things we love and push them together,‘ says Eric. Here’s how they get the mix right…

UPHOLSTER AN ANTIQUE CHAIR IN AN EYE-CATCHING FABRIC: Eric & Jacqui have given their Louis XV period sofa a modern makeover by re-upholstering it in a jaunty shade of lime and accessorising it with cushions that mix graphic pattern and texture. The industrial-style floor lamp, softened in a baby blue shade, is from French company Jielde. The Louis XV chair is in need of restoration but the distressed look combined with one of Jacqui’s throws draped across it, creates an interesting counterpoint to the rest of the room. Hanging above the sofa is a painting by Fiona Greenhill called ‘The Perimeter’. JACQUI AND ERIC seated on an old painted bench that’s situated in an alcove near the front door. MIX YOUR ART STYLES: in all white with just a few splashes of colour, the living room is very zen. In the room is a portrait by artist Cherry Hood but peeking through the archway into the hall, for an artistic contrast, is a 19th-century painting by French painter, JosephDĂŠsirĂŠ Court.

n paper the brief for the renovation of this apartment in Valletta was fairly straight-forward. The client, a thirty something professional man, wanted an open-plan space that allowed privacy when needed, plenty of storage, and a design that also made the most of the sensational view of the harbour. In practice, however, it was rather trickier to do. To begin with, the apartment, which is more than 100 years old, was in a dreadful condition – the roofs were in a dangerous state and the walls had been badly damaged by the collapsed roofs in a neighbouring property. As well, the apartment was situated in a pedestrianised alley on the top floor of a six-floor block with no lift. ‘Convincing different tradesmen to do the job wasn’t easy but with a bit pushing and convincing we managed,’ says Alan Galea from architecture firm, Grech and Vinci (soon to be re-branding; more info soon). ‘For the construction we used a crane which could manoeuvre in tight spaces and once we managed the logistics and found a way to install scaffolding from the alley all the way to the top we were able to work.’ However, it still ‘took longer than it should have’ to transform it into this chic city space apartment. The property needed a wholesale makeover, including the replacement of all the roofs.
DINING ROOM: a large pendant light hanging right over the dining table – a modern combination of traditional round table with modern chairs – gives this part of the open-plan space its own character, and the gold interior picks up the colour on the tiles and the kitchen. The irregular-shaped and patterned holes in the floor-to-ceiling cupboards break up what would otherwise be an expanse of white.

KITCHEN: the gold of the splashback gives the kitchen a warm, rich feel and, as with the pendant light in the dining area, ties it in with the tiles on the floor. Between the kitchen and the bedroom is a blackout curtain which can be drawn across for privacy.

The property was divided into three rooms before, two of which barely had natural light so internal walls were removed to open out the space and furniture was used to divide and create spaces within the apartment as well as provide storage. To make the most of the view, a window was made larger in the bedroom and a new one created in the bathroom, both facing out to sea. In the front main room the openings were widened in such a way that the original proportions were retained whilst at the same time maximising the view - one new window was created and the balcony was widened and the lintel raised. Furniture was used to define spaces, including the section that includes the striking cupboards along one wall. Beginning at the division of the bedroom and kitchen, it extends to the front of the property in the dining area. ‘The lower part of the kitchen pops out of the unit to define that area whilst the dining area remains flush but allows for ample storage,’ says Alan. The irregularshaped and patterned holes reflect the concept of the apartment where slivers of what lies behind shine through. They also double up as handles for the doors. The tiles throughout the apartment are all original but keeping it so wasn’t an easy task as some were broken and when walls were opened up areas were created that were missing them altogether. To solve the problem tiles were removed from sections that would be permanently covered such as beneath the kitchen cupboards, and cut 062

Tucked away at the back of the apartment, it is accessed through a hidden door that forms part of the wardrobe. ‘The client wanted a bath as well as a shower which was a tough challenge as it is such a small space,’ says Alan. ‘We solved the problem by raising the bathroom floor and installing a sunken bath with wooden removable slats covering the bath when it is used as a shower.’ Very clever. 063

Maison & Objet is one of the year’s key design shows, and is particularly good for garden trends. Eliza Costabel and Melina Scodanibbio from The Garden Studio spent two days walking the eight huge halls filled with 3000 exhibitors. READY, STEADY, BAKE! Someone once said, ‘baking is love made visible’.. We bake because we love it but we do it also because we care for the ones around us, especially our children. As with most things, a little planning is essential. First of all analyse the space you have available. How many hours of sun do you get per day? How many containers can you fit?
H
aving a vegetable garden and growing, picking and eating your produce is probably everybody’s dream. Lack of space however is very often the reason why it remains just that, a dream. But the good news is you don’t need a garden to grow veggies because a balcony (or patio or terrace), which most people have, is more than enough and a small packet of seeds or tray of seedlings will go a long way! There are also numerous advantages to a homegrown container vegetable garden, not least eliminating the pesticides which go into your body - planters can be moved around to control the amount of sun or shade they get, it’s easier to water and fertilise them as well as to control pests or soil-borne diseases. And you have a variety of easily accessible, super-fresh greens right at your doorstep. As with most things, a little planning is essential. First of all analyse the space you have available. How many hours of sun do you get per day? How many containers can you fit? Unless the vegetables will be hidden from view, (which would be a pity!) consider the overall look of the balcony or terrace and choose planters which will fit in with the style. Make the most of vertical space too; trellises and tripods for beans, peas and cucumbers to clamber up on, hanging baskets for herbs and cherry tomatoes to tumble out of. There are also several systems available on-line which can be attached directly to the wall for the ultimate vertical vegetable garden. Vegetables like a lot of sun, although in our climate shading them through the hottest hours in summer is beneficial and helps to retain moisture in the soil. Remember, as containers dry out quickly and being a closed system, container plants depend entirely on the gardener for water and nutrition so you need to check them daily in summer. Always start with the best possible soil mix which should include a slow release organic fertiliser, as this will make it easier to maintain the soil quality in time. Keep up the nutrient levels by adding a liquid fertiliser about once a month. 077

Now for the fun part, what to plant! Virtually all vegetables can be grown in containers although some, like tomatoes, peppers and aubergines, need more root space, and therefore more soil, than others. In any case it’s always a good idea to choose compact or dwarf varieties which won’t take over the whole planter. Don’t plant your seedlings all at once but rather stagger planting to overlap harvesting and ensure a steady production. Having a theme makes it easier to decide on planting combinations and the theme can be expanded to include herbs, fruit and edible flowers. In fact many herbs and flowers stimulate vegetable growth and improve flavour. The end result is a beautiful multi-coloured and multi-textured tribute to the senses that looks, smells and tastes stunning!
WHAT TO GROW Easy to grow vegetables for beginners: carrots, beets, lettuce, radishes, peppers, peas with marigolds to keep all the bugs away Leafy veggies: these are happy with as little as three hours of direct sun per day - try rucola, kale, spinach, salad greens with pansies for a touch of colour Growing up: go for climbing cucumbers, pumpkins, beans, tomatoes, courgettes The salad bowl: choose different varieties of salads, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes, basil, spring onions and nasturtium For minestrone: grow carrots, onions, celery, potatoes, beans Feeling hot! Chicken mousse filled ravioli with snail ragout serves 4
Ingredients
Method
400gr ready made chicken filled ravioli 2tbls chopped onion 50ml virgin olive oil 1tbls minced garlic 150ml brown chicken stock 150gr cooked and shelled snails 1sprig fresh thyme 1tbls chopped parsley 50gr picked spinach leaves celery leaves to garnish
Bring a saucepan of the stock to the boil. In a sauté pan, sweat the onion and garlic in olive oil till soft then add the stock and thyme. Reduce to sauce consistency then add the cooked & shelled snails and the spinach. Season with salt, pepper and chopped parsley. Cook the ravioli as per packet instructions in the saucepan of boiling water. Toss with the sauce and serve with some celery leaves on top.

Fettuccine lobster serves 4
Ingredients
Method
250gr dry egg fettuccine pasta 50ml virgin olive oil 2piece whole live lobster (weighing approx 400gr each) 300ml prawn or lobster stock 100gr chopped onion 20gr minced garlic 100gr cherry tomatoes cut in half 150ml cooking cream 1pc lemon juice 1tsp chopped fresh dill 1tsp chopped fresh tarragon salt pepper
Bring a pot of water to the boil. Add the lobster and boil for 4 minutes. Remove lobster from the boiling water and chill. When chilled, cut the lobster in half right across and remove the bones from shells including the claws. Cut the cooked lobster pieces into small pieces and set aside, together with the lobster shell. In a separate pot, boil water and cook the fettuccine as per packet instructions, till all dente. In a saute pan, heat the olive oil and sweat the onion & garlic till soft, then add the cherry tomatoes and sweat for a further couple of minutes, then add the lobster or prawn stock and reduce. When reduced, add the cooking cream and reduce for a further 10 minutes over medium heat. Add the cut lobster pieces, chopped dill & tarragon and bring to simmer again. Season with salt, pepper and lemon juice. Drain fettuccine and toss with the lobster sauce. In 4 plates lay the cooked fettuccine in the half lobster shell and drizzle some sauce around. Serve.

320gr cheese gnocchi 50gr chopped onion 50gr chopped leeks 100gr diced squash 50gr dry funghi porcini (soaked) 100gr sliced brown cap mushrooms 50gr shitakii mushrooms 1tbls chopped chives 1tsp chopped tarragon 100ml vegetable stock 100ml cooking cream parmeggiano salt & pepper
Sweat leeks and onion in olive oil till soft. Add the soaked porcini, squash, shitakii and brown cap mushrooms and sweat for another 5 minutes. Add the vegetable stock and some of the porcini water and reduce for another 5 minutes. Add the cooking cream and simmer till a sauce consistency. Cook the cheese gnocchi in boiling, salted water as per instructions. Season sauce with salt, pepper, chopped chives & tarragon. Toss in the cooked gnocchi and serve with grated parmeggiano

For me, I harken back to tradition and would pick a scrumptious Chardonnay that is mouth-filling. Lobster has substantial weight and it's textural. I wouldn’t cut corners on the wine and unashamedly rejoice with the newly released 2015 or previous 2014 vintage of Malta’s Gold medalwinning Chardonnay.

I think that it was more about the buildings finding me…in the sense that I never really looked or planned to buy a property to let. Hideout, a pied-a-terre, was the first. It is located in a beautiful street next to my childhood home and belonged to my late grandmother’s sister, Peppa. After laying vacant for a number of years, I bought it from my grandmother, mostly to secure a nostalgic foothold. Retro Pad is another pied-a-terre beneath my home which I bought from a lovely old couple a few years after I moved in upstairs. The Republic Street VV [housing Gallery, Library and Atelier] also kind of landed on my lap. An old friend was
interested in buying it, so I worked out an estimate for renovation. After she decided it was not for her, and after quite a few months of phone calls from the agent, another friend of mine, he convinced me I should buy it. Mostly. Especially the one in Republic Street which was falling to pieces with both roof and facade masonry in danger of collapse. The structural repairs were considerable, lasting over six months, and the only finishes which were salvageable were the patterned Maltese tiles. The most challenging part in all renovation projects of this sort is how to integrate modern building services within the traditional fabric. As much as I can, I

do my best to avoid the use of gypsum soffits internally; and water tanks and airconditioning units, externally. Each one is different, really. One has dark walls, with sea views on all sides; the other is very homey with a library of art books and parquet; another is in the most idyllic street in Birgu with a magical afternoon sun filtering through the bedroom; and Retro Pad contains one story after another of items collected & restored over the years. D Probably Retro Pad. It is as vintage as it gets - in all the details and all its contents. It would probably be the hardest to replicate as each piece is a
story in itself such as the kitchen counter which used to be my grandfather’s workbench, or the stool which belonged to [architect] Richard England’s father, the G-Plan seating with its original 1950s upholstery. When there are no guests, this is the one I most like to spend time in. Mostly over the internet - Maltapark, Amazon, eBay and so on. Sometimes we go to the Birgu flea market, and whenever I am in a big city I always check out their antique shops & markets.

THE PINEAPPLE LAMP by Ceramika Maltija FIFTY YEARS ON, THE PINEAPPLE LAMP BASE IS ONE OF CERAMIKA’S MOST POPULAR DESIGNS. THIS IS ITS STORY‌
The lamp base was originally sculpted by British artist and sculptor Sheila Mitchell who, with her husband fellow artist Charles Bone, established a ceramic workshop at Villa Bologna at the request of Cecilia de Trafford, the daughter of Lord Strickland, the Prime Minister of Malta. As it was then, the body of the lamp is today made from white earthenware
clay. It is created using a huge five-piece mould. Once it is cast, which takes about four of five days depending on the weather, 28 leaves are separately press-moulded from clay and added to the body in four rings, each of which has seven leaves. These are then left to dry which takes some weeks. The tricky part is the getting the body and leaves which are of a different
thickness to dry at the same rate. In summer, the leaves and the top of the lamp are covered with a plastic bag to keep the temperature constant. Once it is dry, the lamp base is hand-painted in white and fired in the kiln. At this point the production process has taken about five weeks. Finally, the metal fitting and wiring is added.
