This Issue. Many of the homes we feature in HOMEWORKS are on the large size, but this issue focuses on apartments and small houses, spaces where the lack of expansive interiors and a big garden have not stood in the way of creating a home that feels bright and airy and very comfortable to live in. Light, ergonomics and decorative details have all been used to great effect in the homes featured and I hope you find them as inspiring as we do. On a similar theme, this issue reports on the rise of the microspace - one room homes that are anything but low rent. Built to a very high-spec, they also make us question the idea of possessions and how many we actually need in life. Bathrooms are also a focus with pages packed full of ideas and inspiration from real life bathrooms to latest trends and products. We pay particular attention to marble which is now going beyond the vanity top to decorate the whole room, creating a bathroom that is seriously wow! Enjoy!

FROM HAPPINESS TO HEARTBREAK Relationship angst is often inspiration for music, but rarely for design - but Danish designer Johannes Torpe thought differently and has created a collection of furniture for Italian super-brand Moroso that’s inspired by the beginning and end of a personal relationship. The Precious chairs were created when Johannes was about to propose marriage and ‘in a moment of love and happiness’; they feature a thick metal band, resembling a wedding ring, that runs around the base of the seat. However the relationship ended and in his sadness Johannes, who is also a musician as well as former creative director of Bang & Olufsen, designed the modular Heartbreaker sofa in which half-heart shapes form the end of the armrests. Said Johannes: ‘If a songwriter can put his or her heart on a silver plate and serve it to people, why shouldn’t a designer be able to do the same?’

HOME OFFICE Danish brand Hay, one of the leading lights in the rise of Scandi style, unveiled its latest furniture and homeware ranges at 3 Days of Design, the annual design festival held in Copenhagen in late May. It showcased its new collections in an 18th-century palace, filling the ornate rooms with a series of room settings, the inspiration being what Hay described as the ‘shifting landscape of office environments. The spaces we have created... are about both living and working, and perhaps the divide between those two parts of our existence is not so strict today,’ said Rolf Hay, co-founder and creative director of the brand. ‘As we look to the future of design, we should consider that a balanced lifestyle sometimes means living where we work, and working where we live.’ Among the designs launched were the Bernard chair which features a solid oak frame with sloping armrests and a leather seat and the Matin table light which teams a steelwire stem with a pleated cotton shade that resembles a coloured parasol. The Red Dot Awards is an international design competition covering all aspects of design from brand communication to product design. In the latter, a team of judges, all experts in their field, determine products created across 48 categories, giving awards for outstanding design. Best of the Best is the top prize, awarded to a few for exceptionally strong design. These are the Best of the Best in furniture and lighting 2019 The Numo chair by the inhouse design team of German company Aeris GmbH has a shell design on a sled frame and features an innovative movement mechanism which allows the chair to follow the natural movements forwards and backwards of the person sitting in it. It can be used dining chair inside or out.

The Jabara AV board by Shinsaku Miyamoto for Japanese company Ritzwell & Co. is a stylish cabinet for audiovisual equipment. It contrasts the slim vertical lines of tambour doors, typical of the Yoshido cane doors and the Sagano bamboo forests in Kyoto, with a tilt and turn door in dark tinted glass.

Dawn to dusk lights by the British company Haberdashery evokes the memory of the rising and setting sun and the transition from deep, rich reds and orange, into peach hues then through to the white light of midday. Available as side and floor standing lamps, the diffused circular light source is manually moved up and down to create a warm ambience.

Aperture by Canadian company Fluxwerx is a linear suspended light with the next step in Anidolic Extraction technology (capturing external light and directing it deeply and evenly into room) that’s made up of a series of cellular voids that allow clear views right through the light to the architecture above.

INTERIOR DESIGN WINNER In the interior architecture and design category, the Best of the Best was The Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland by Basalt Designers in collaboration with Design Group Italia. The hotel is built amongst lava formations, and inside the materials - raw concrete, wood and lava - complement the landscape. The full list of winners will be published on www.red-dot.org on July 18

MADE BY HAND

Eleazar Galea

How did you develop a passion for olive wood? The national sculptor of Malta, Anton Agius, lived next door to my grandmother, and from a young age, about eight years old, I was fascinated by sculpture and art. Often I would sketch or model clay under his watchful eye. Anton worked in many mediums, and one of those was olive wood. As I grew older he would ask me to clean the roots of an olive tree, remove the bark, soil and stones, so he could carve them. He taught me to look at the wood and see how it was naturally shaped, and not force a shape from it. He always said, “Let the shape come out”. By the age of 11 I was attending the Malta School of Art in Valletta; I then continued at the Art Academy Malta in Mosta. Throughout this time, I was always collecting pieces of olive wood and practising my sculpting on them. By the age of 16, I had already started to be commissioned for my olive wood sculptures I never stopped sculpting but coming from a family of business people, as I started my working life I set up a successful property maintenance business but quickly realised that my passion for art had to become my lifestyle not my hobby, so I sold everything and became a full time artist. What is it about olive wood that you have made it your principal medium? It is an extremely hard wood - some pieces are twice the hardness of oak - and has a close grain which achieves a really nice finish. I got hooked on it when I was a child. The grain of the wood excited me, the smell of the wood, the temperament of its structure, the way it suggests to you what form you should carve out. To this day, every single piece of olive wood I cut, regardless of whether it is to make a piece of kitchenware, a craft piece or a large beautiful sculpture, gives me so much satisfaction unlike any other material I have ever worked with. Even when I lived in the UK with all those beautiful woods available there, I would still choose olive wood and would drive from the UK to Malta to collect some special pieces and return with them to the UK to work on.

you are going to make. If it’s a chopping board you want a nice, straight grain; if it’s a mortar and pestle, you want a swirly grain. For an artistic piece, I let the wood dictate what has to be done with it - follow what is already there and the end result will be the best. Another consideration is colour - this varies depending on the age of the tree. If you want something to have a really deep grain with a reddish colour, the wood has to have come from a tree that’s very mature, a few hundred years old. A juvenile tree is more white as it has more sap wood than hard wood. I do, though, use the sap wood as a contrast. What inspires you? What is around me; I might, for example, see something in nature. One of the last sculptures I made was inspired by reeds - how the leaf folds over and trying to put that into a piece of olive wood. Sometimes it is the simplest things in life that inspire me to make a sculpture. How do you work? When I have selected a piece of wood I will study its form and decide if it’s going to be a hand-carved sculpture or even a piece of artistic wood turning. With a carved sculpture, it can be a process of many months as it is rare that I start and finish one piece on its own - I often have a few pieces on the go. But the most satisfying part of the process is always applying the oils at the end to make the grain stand out. What are the pieces that stand out for you? I have so many - asking for a favourite is like asking which of your children you love best! One piece, though, that is close to my heart is one that was a very simple thing looking at a vortex. It did not take that much time to create because it was nearly there in the wood. It’s close to my heart because of the simplicity of it. At the moment I am working on a piece that has taken me very long time - figures of fish carved in the wood. I like it because it takes me back to the kind of sculpture I used to do with the master.

How do you choose the piece of olive wood that you want to work with? With commercial products, it is first selecting the right kind of wood for the object

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE Virgil Abloh, artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear collection, may be a fashion designer (as well as DJ and architect) but he has become a much sought after creative in the interiors world too. Excitement over his collaboration with IKEA, due to be launched this autumn, has been growing since it was announced last year and now he has delved into the Vitra archives to reimagine some of the company’s most iconic designs to create a vision of the home of a young adult in 2035. Vitra approached Abloh to help them reach a younger, more social media-aware consumer. ‘What I found particularly inspiring was that Virgil Abloh came to the table as an outsider, with a fresh look at our collection and a different pace, free of constraints,’ explained Nora Fehlbaum, CEO of Vitra. ‘He manages to shift the topic of design classics away from the discourse of an intellectual elite to make them accessible to a wider public.’ His designs, which include a seasaw made using the Wire chairs by Charles and Ray Eames, and Jean Prouve’s Petite Potence wall lamp, also in orange and featuring a metal cage around the LED bulb, have been installed in the Zaha Hadid-designed fire station at the Vitra Campus in Germany.

THE BUSINESS OF DESIGN | Alessandro Calligaris Calligaris is one of the major names of Italian design, with a reputation for creating functional and beautiful furniture. The company began in 1923 with just one chair; today it has a catalogue of 800 products and is sold in 100 countries across the world. In Malta, it is carried by Onepercent. ‘Calligaris is synonymous with good quality, technical furniture and design that is both of aesthetic and functional value making it a distinctive name,’ said Charis Mallia. ‘Onepercent is proud to showcase Calligaris at our showroom’. Alessandro Calligaris is the third generation of the family to be involved in the company and took over running it in 1966. Today, he is president of the company and here, he gives his insight into the brand...

Ines Chair

In your time as head of the company, what have been the key moments in the development of the brand? The major change took place when we transitioned from being a single-product (chair) to a multiple-product (tables, furniture, upholstery) company; this forced us to start using many materials such as plastic, leather, metal, glass, ceramic, fabrics compared to only one as before. This affected our plants and it became necessary to reorganize them completely. The only manufacturing process that we kept completely within our company was that of wood. Today, we have a company in Ravna Gora (Croatia); we purchase the wood from the State Forestry, cut the logs and dry the boards in order to be able to proceed with the first part of the process; the last step is sending the semi-finished products to the plants in Friuli to be assembled and stained. We also have a processing system for the metal extension mechanisms that we use on our tables. We manufacture them in a company in San Stino di Livenza which we acquired five years ago from one of our suppliers in order to protect the know-how and the patents that we have developed over the years. Lastly, in December 2017 we acquired Ditre Italia, an upholstery company in Cordignano (TV), which allows us to work with these kinds of products in the best possible way. Previous to this, the group did not have a specific expertise. How would you describe the ethos of Calligaris? One of Calligaris’ main features has always been the insatiable need to improve, from the research of new materials and new production techniques all the way to the most ingenious design

solutions. In regards to materials, we have introduced innovative solutions such as ceramics coupled with glass, which allows us to take advantage of the beauty and characteristics of ceramic along with the resistance of glass. What are your favourite Calligaris products? I don’t have a favourite product, but each decade has been characterized by a product that I became passionate about. Over the years there have been several chair models that I appreciated, from the 150 to the Sabrina or the Cerchio. Recently, one of my favourites is the New York chair. How do you decide which designers to work with? Calligaris decided from the beginning not to collaborate with big names in design because we have strong expertise within our company. Nevertheless, we have had some ongoing collaborations with several excellent designers depending on the type of product we wanted to develop. The ones we collaborate with more often are Archirivolto, with whom we created the Saint Tropez and the Liberty chairs, Edi and Paolo Ciani who designed our Igloo chair and Michele Menescardi, who designed our Lazy armchair and Stefano Cavazzana who designed the Mies and Lounge sofas. What is the Code Collection and why was it created? CODE, stands for Complements Design and was created in 2014 due to the need of the brand to extend its offer into furnishing accessories in different categories. The CODE collection allows small extravagances thanks to the collaboration with young and talented national designers. Calligaris decided to make this collection a playground and an occasion for professional growth for young Italian designers, offering them a serious opportunity to enter the international market with products that reflect the latest market and creativity trends. The objects that are part of the CODE project are expressive, fresh, surprising and colourful accessories. Alpha Private Equity 7 recently acquired a majority stake in Calligaris - how will this impact the brand? The project with Alpha started in order to make the company grow through the acquisition of companies specialising in different sectors. This is because we want to give the consumer a wider choice among the Calligaris-branded products.

Calligaris at Onepercent ‘In the space dedicated to Calligaris, a home ambience has been created with the various products being offered by the brand,’ says Charis Mallia. ‘Velvets and rich fabrics in deep colours can be found on the chairs, armchairs and sofas, while the strong and innovative table structures that are made to adapt to any kitchen or dining room, are adorned by beautiful table tops in resilient ceramic, wood or stone. The brand stands out from the rest with its wide selection of chairs and tables, the variety in accessories such as carpets and lamps, as well as its affordable price points. Calligaris in Malta has become a household name, and continues to attract those who have already experienced the brand in their home. While thanking our loyal customers we encourage others to visit our showroom on Valley Road, Msida, to discover the endless possibilities being offered by the world of Calligaris. 023

Behind an imposing doubleheight front door, a space with a modest footprint contains a sculpture for living. Through rigorous geometric arrangement, a kitchen, a living area and an elevated bedroom are created beneath an impressive vaulted ceiling. A fully equipped kitchen with extra deep Carrara marble countertops occupies one half of the steel structure. The cube frame offers storage nooks above the workspace, and behind this, a custom breakfast bar is situated below a window to enjoy the morning sunshine. On the other side, a sitting area demarcated by a splash of green upholstery provides a space for relaxation, and open shelving for decorative objects provides a link between the living and kitchen spaces

mall space living is not new. Here in Malta, post war, it was not uncommon for people to live in very small spaces, or even in a room; often ‘kerreja’ were rented within a tenement, with a number of people living in what amounted to nothing more than 10 square

metres. Other cities boast similarly small spaces - Paris for instance has its ‘chambres de bonne’, small apartments generally found on the top floor which were used as bedrooms by the family’s domestic staff, but today, are usually the cheapest rung on the Parisian letting market. However, the modern microspace is unique for being a highly designed space, one where room to move may be at a premium, but where the design spec is high. Rather than being the cheap option, it can be a considered choice for those looking for an upscale lifestyle that is low-maintenance, eco-friendly or both. ‘There’s a general environmental awareness in reducing the carbon footprint - a responsibility to consume and own less,’ says Elisa Grech architect from MODEL who recently created the two apartments pictured here. ‘How much space do we need to store our personal items; most of which we might not necessarily need? Thus “less is more” is not only relevant to minimal design aesthetics, but is also a lifestyle concept which nowadays people are more conscious about.’ Adds Simon Grech, also from MODEL: ‘We overestimate the amount of space we require to be comfortable. When living in a small space one has to understand that the relationship between human and object becomes ever more relevant and intense, as there is an overlap in the space they both occupy when both in movement. There has to be an understanding and design of negotiation between the biological and non-biological. Living becomes proactive through action; there’s no space for procrastination and sedentary living. Living becomes a dance, although physically demanding, enjoyable and mindful.’

To the rear left of the dwelling, a full-length mirror slides to reveal a toilet and washbasin, and to the rear right, a shower room in contemporary slate colours balances the floorplan. The staircase up to the sleeping quarters is located at the back of the dwelling. Fabricated in black bent steel sheeting to blend with the frame of the cube, its twists echo the turns of a traditional Maltese stone garigor. Sweeping upward to a king-size bed, this sleeping platform on top of the living and kitchen areas allows an uninterrupted view of the stars at night through the fanlight window 027

In a compact residence, a floating sculptural staircase creates a striking focal point from an architectural necessity. Complimenting restored historic features with minimalist design, the staircase hangs like a lantern from a double-height ceiling, connecting a ground floor living/kitchen/dining area and a first floor reading nook and bedroom. Extending four metres up through the heart of the property, the custom staircase structure is anchored by a slimline perimeter frame. Its interior spiral form is fully wrapped in white steel mesh which allows light to travel throughout. Safely cocooning the user as they make their way up or down, its perforated volume filters daylight into the stairwell and through to the kitchen behind it. By night, it illuminates the ground floor areas with a softly diffused glow

Most microspace are rented. ‘The design of these microspaces in particular is very functional, which is one element that makes them so popular,’ says Thomas Cremona, founder of property management company Casa Rooms. ‘If you’re organised, they’re easy to manage because they’re extremely low maintenance. The people renting out these spaces are young, single professionals and the spaces are not necessarily less expensive than larger spaces. It’s more about the design and finish. You can get a larger space that isn’t as nicely done and these clients are going to opt for the smaller space because it’s more functional and suits them better to live there.’ In Malta, it is Valletta that is attracting this kind of development. ‘People want to rent in the city, sometimes regardless of the size of the space,’ says Thomas. ‘These apartments have high ceilings and large windows so they do have features that are typical of Valletta, which is also a deciding factor.’ Says Elisa: ‘With its rich charm and history, the capital city makes for one of the most desired rental locations. In general, there’s an increase in demand for rental spaces, which may be attributed to the influx of foreign nationals for an undefined period of time.’ What it is like to live in such a small space? ‘The truth is when you are given a limited space you learn how to adapt to it and base your daily routines and functions around it,’ says Elisa. ‘There are pros and cons - you can’t host a dinner party but then you don’t spend a lot of your time cleaning. If you love food, you don’t have the space to cook on a big scale, but then you save on kitchenware, food and electricity, which you can spend on exploring restaurants instead.’ From a design perspective, designing a truly functional space this small is a tour de force of architecture. ‘It is not about quantity of square metres, but rather quality of space per square metre,’ says Simon. ‘One has to think about the resident’s day to day functions and routines, and how to best accommodate them within the space,’ continues Elisa. ‘In such tight spaces clutter is your worst enemy. It’s important to create as much storage space as possible and to have a location to store day-to-day items when not in use. When designing, it’s important to keep in mind a day-to-day program and a clutterfree, organised environment. ‘The key is to allocate just about the right amount of area for each room. When designing within the parameters of an existing fabric, the focus is shifted into fitting functional installations to a high level of detail which assist making day to day life easier for the user.’ Creating high functionality in a small space does not come cheap. ‘One of the biggest challenges in designing a small space such as this is that generally clients are under the impression that

To the rear of the property, a kitchen with Carrara marble countertops and open shelving spans the width of the back wall. To its left, a generously proportioned bathroom with original floor tiles and a soft grey colour palette is an exercise in simplicity 029

HW THE EDIT

On the first floor, the staircase leads directly into an intimate reading space with contemporary furnishings and a view out through restored apertures. The bedroom, just off the landing, features warm birch flooring underfoot and simple white walls. A traditional Maltese gallarija extends the room out into the quiet streetscape and floods the room with light

the relationship between the price per square metre to finish and furnish a space is directly proportional, whereas in reality, this is not the case,’ says Simon. ‘The price per square metre to finish and furnish a small space is high for the simple reason that in the limited square metres available to make a self sustainable space, all the fittings and furnishings that would also be available in a standard size dwelling need to be included.’ Adds Elisa: ‘Detailing custom-made functional installations usually work out at a premium. There’s a challenge in utilising honest simple materials for complex functional structures. On a long term basis this investment usually pays off, given the quality of the space achieved within a small space. ‘Another important challenging aspect is respecting the existing fabric of the space, especially when dealing with properties within a historical context. Reversibility is key. There might be a point where the necessity or appeal of small spaces decreases, which would leave us with a multitude of one bedroom apartments. I think both architects and contractors alike must be aware of this risk and be able to revert these spaces so that their usage can change.’ 030

We start our homes section with a lovely house in Gozo, one where the owners were inspired by how the Japanese plan their space to create their own stylish small house. On page 042 are two apartments with a shared history that have been thoughtfully and beautifully renovated with linked but different schemes. Turn to page 050 for inspiration on transforming a small dark space into one that is light, bright and perfectly proportioned and on 056, decorative details give a plain apartment a strong sense of design 033

rchitect and interior designer couple and team Sonja and Keith Wright have had a relationship with Gozo for a long time. In 1988 they purchased a 250-year-old farmhouse, which they renovated. ‘It was a lot of hard work and it was ongoing, which is why we decided to sell it in 2006,’ says Keith. ‘We still liked the island very much, but we thought we would prefer to spend our weeks here enjoying it rather than working on the house. So we went about looking for another space.’ Knowing about the difficult plot sizes - 5 x 20 meters - on Gozo (and Malta) and conventional planning that featured long corridors and rooms off to one side which offered extremely limited natural light and ventilation, the designers saw the small plot space as their definition of the project. ‘We were motivated by clever small space planning in Japan’, says Sonja. ‘We thought, “okay, how can we do this differently? What are the possibilities?” This is where it all started.’ The couple embarked on planning and creating a home with as much natural light, space and ventilation as possible, to the point of forgoing an air conditioning system altogether. ‘We wanted to get light into the deeper areas and the main solution to the challenge was to bring it in from as many points as possible,’ says Sonja. The staircase is the aesthetic focal point, but also the physical one. It’s the point where light crosses and ventilation is created, from the vertical window at the back, the glassed void in the middle, and the window at the front. This ‘x’ of light and air is the main aspect which aids in their connection. ‘This is why the 037

windows are right up to the top of the top floor,’ says Keith. As part of the planning process the designers built physical models as well as preparing internal renderings to evaluate all spaces and the effect of light and spatial relationships in day and night situations. Among other issues, this led to the decision to open the void under the second stair flight at the expense of floor space. Based on both their experience with the previous Gozo farmhouse and their relationship with suppliers through their architectural firm, the couple approached a father and son team from Gharb, as well

as bringing in some materials and installers from Germany. ‘In the beginning, the locals’ reaction was – “but it’s just a garage!”’ says Keith. ‘The local team built the shell with the exposed concrete ceiling. Then we organised a troupe comprising a carpentry and metal work company we have experience with to come over to Gozo from Germany for two weeks. ‘First we wanted the blades of the stairwell as cantilevered out. Upon close inspection the metal worker didn’t trust the quality of the structure so he wouldn’t do it without a string.’

‘But now… we actually like this more,’ Sonja says. ‘This is the way with development sometimes. It’s the same at the back. At first we wanted the glass façade as the exterior wall, but then MEPA informed us that it’s a requirement that a certain amount of your exterior wall is stone, so we had to create an extra wall to meet this requirement. As a result, we added a wall made of old stone. So now in the end, it provides shade and we really like the way it looks, especially with the effect of the up-lights on the walls at night and the reflection.’ The windows were of particular importance since they were such a main feature, both aesthetically and functionally. Schüco windows were brought in with the advantage of casing a system which gathers rainwater to direct it away from the interior of the house. The subtle Spartherm fireplace runs throughout from bottom to top. Electrical underfloor heating was installed to ensure warmth underfoot, although, ‘this may be one of the few elements we would have done differently, as it takes a long time to heat up and also misses the kitchen, which we spend a lot of our time in,’ says Keith. Mainly put together by Sonja because this is her speciality area, the Vitra and Gubi furniture is simple, with pieces that create a congruity throughout, a repetition of the materials cork, metal, and oak. The outdoor space can be made into the main space quickly and easily by just moving a few lightweight Fredericia chair stools. Beautiful, simple, and clever Tobias Grau pendant lights appear throughout. ‘When designing a small space, you have to be careful when adding loose furniture so that it doesn’t look like too much or too little,’ says Sonja. ‘We repeated certain pieces on the different levels so that a congruity was created and so that you don’t get the feeling that there are too many items included. I stuck to black, white and grey tones with a few focal pieces of colour.’ When it comes to celebrating the clever creation of space, this Gozo home is a brilliant illustration of success. Cross ventilation and seemingly simple planning has taken an essentially very small space and transformed it into one that feels effortlessly bright and airy.

Sibling Rivalry

Two apartments of a similar design and layout have been given their own identity but, in a nod to their history, a sense of connection too Photographs: : Tonio Lombardi Architects: Apap Brown Design Studio in collaboration Nina Hattingh

hese two apartments form part of a historic townhouse, at the top of a hill in Sliema, next to the Cloisters, which was split into six apartments by one family, the apartments subsequently lived in by different members of the family. Both apartments were once home to two brothers, but had long been abandoned. While little structural alteration was needed, the level of finishes was quite basic, and it was at this point that Jenni Apap Brown and Nina Hattingh were brought in to bring them up-to-date. The work took six months. Here, Jenni explains how they did it...

Living room: Solid colour has been used throughout and in this room, a warm grey works well with the black of the Maltese tiles. A corner sofa, a popular style today, is a good choice as it makes the most of any space 042

What was your brief? To maintain the apartments as two separate units offering a two-bedroom and a three bedroom layout with the intention for them to be ‘ready to let’. As this was a commercial investment it was important to work to a preestablished budget and time frame in order to make it viable. Within these parameters we had a free hand for design. Did you have to approach each one differently? There were a number of elements which were inherently similar such as the proportions of the space, the same light and outlook to the street, therefore we took this idea as a base and developed each apartment with similarities to the other yet both with their own identity.

How did you make the most of the space? The first exercise was to redefine the uses of the rooms to fit the new requirements. One of the key decisions was to keep the living room and kitchen/ dining as two separate spaces rather than to go for the obvious decision to create an open-plan space. This was a conscious decision to create two defined spaces which would allow the different users of the property to have separated spaces and not to feel the need to retreat to their bedrooms. This worked well as it respected the original proportions of the spaces which already had a good internal height and orientation providing natural light in all rooms. As the volumes were quite large it allowed us to insert sanitary blocks into the bedrooms without compromising the sense of the space.

Hallway: The combination of a round mirror and a floating shelf are a chic alternative to a console, giving a focal point as well as storage

How did you go about the design of the inside? From the offset we were very conscious of the clients brief (budget and time). It was important to assess what of the existing elements could be maintained and reused such as the traditional patterned tiling. The next step in the design process was to define the walls or volumes that would be occupied by fitted furnishings and fixtures such as the kitchen and bathrooms. Once this layout was frozen we started to look into the movable items that provided the flexible part of the scheme; in parallel we worked on the materials, colour schemes, selection of lighting, combinations of soft furnishings and accessories. 047

House 2.indd 47

HW SPACES

The design approach and general moodboard for both apartments consisted of the same elements, with the main difference being the treatment of the flooring. The decision to work with the existing flooring in Apt.A, which has a very graphic nature, drove us to choose floor tiling in Apt.B with a continuous texture. This then dictated that the walls should be simple applications of solid colour. This approach to solid colour is also expressed through the choice of fabrics and furnishings in combination with large glazed and mirrored surfaces which provide a sense of newness and contemporary language in their form. In order to create a master suite in each apartment we introduced new ensuite bathrooms within the existing volumes. These were built with custommade reeded glass partitions to allow the penetration of natural light and to maintain the original sense and materiality.

Bedroom: In this apartment, the reeded partition creating the bathroom is framed in white. The mirrored fronts of the floor to ceiling cupboards ensure the room feels spacious and also helps with the distribution of light Bathroom: In the ensuite bathroom, a large round mirror creates a design focus and is a softer contrast to the rectangular wallmounted basin that includes storage. With no tub, there is room for a large shower which gives a sense of luxury

With a focus on proportion and scale, a small house has been made to feel spacious and stylish

O

ften, looking at the ‘before’ pictures of a property that has been renovated makes the finished result even more impressive than on first sight. Seeing the property in its undone state brings home both the ambition of scale and vision that were needed to transform what is often a dated and neglected space with little design-value into a home that works for the way we live now. That is certainly the case with this house. The before images show small, cramped rooms where what little existing light there is, is swallowed up by heavy, dark furniture and mustard yellow fittings. Andrew Agius Delicata, however, ‘saw the potential’ for it to become a contemporary home, perfectly designed for modern living and went about creating it. The key to building’s renovation says Andrew, was identifying the property’s greatest problem and focusing on making it right. ‘That is what I like to do - take what is the biggest issue and turn it around to make it the centrepiece,’ he says. ‘In the case of this house, it was small and dull so my aim was to make it feel as big, spacious and bright as possible.’ Living room: Andrew deliberately removed the corridor so that on entering the house, one immediately feels as though one is in a large, light space. The artwork on the wall adds a pop of colour 051

House 3.indd 51

HW SPACES

Making a room look and feel good is all about creating the correct proportions

To do this he focused on the ergonomics - the means to achieve the exact amount of space needed for a task or object to fit the people that would make use of it. ‘My main inspiration for working with small spaces is from boating as I race on sailing yachts,’ says Andrew. ‘These boats have the smallest of spaces and somehow they feel spacious and work very well.’ As expected, the renovation began with the demolition of the wall between the living room and kitchen to make one large open-plan space. In doing so, he also removed the corridor so that on entering the house, one immediately feels as though one is in a large, light space. More unexpectedly, however, he then lowered the ceiling over the living room. ‘Making a room look and feel good is all about getting the proportions right,’ says Andrew. ‘With a high ceiling, the room would look narrow; lower it too much, however, and it feels small and claustrophobic; get it right, though, and the room feels just the right size and comfortable.’ The house had an existing staircase which was just one metre wide; this was also removed and in its place is one that is as much a design feature as a functional piece. Designed by Andrew and made of welded steel - Andrew worked alongside the metalworker to ensure the design was just as he wanted it - the staircase had to be assembled in three parts inside the house so as to fit through the main door. ‘As it’s an open, minimal staircase, the light flows through it, so it doesn’t impend any light from reaching either side of the space,’ says Andrew. He also flipped the way the staircase faces which allowed him to make use of the living area better.

Staircase: Designed by Andrew, each piece had to be welded together; the three sections were then attached once inside the house Dining area: White teamed with beige create a serene mood with warmth introduced through the wooden table and curtains. The floor to ceiling windows ensure enough light enters the ground floor to keep it bright and airy. Through the doorway is the downstairs bathroom, a statement wall of tiles creating an interesting textured look

Bedroom: to give this room character, Andrew riveted a traditional style balcony into the wall on either side of the window. Beyond it, the green of the neighbouring garden creates a relaxing vibe Extension: the bedroom here has a very different feel thanks to the exposed concrete ceiling and lighting. The roof is highly insulated to regulate the temperature, as is the window. Beyond is a cantilevered terrace, the high walls giving privacy as well as shelter from the wind

The ground floor’s lightness comes predominantly from the rear of the house where the majority of the back wall has been given over to a glass door along with a clerestory window in line with the soffit. Accentuating the sense of light is the colour scheme which is a soft white, this shade carried through from the walls to the ceiling. ‘I wanted the feeling of one large white space,’ explains Andrew. The colour changes, however, on the top level; here a recessed floor was constructed to make a house over three levels. ‘Extending on the top allowed me to fit in the third-bedroom – for me, a three-bedroom house feels the most comfortable,’ he says. Here, the white walls give way to a ceiling of exposed concrete that, combined with the exposed lighting, gives a more industrial vibe that reflects the fact that it is a modern extension. Overall, the house has a neutral palette with occasional

injection of colour. ‘I like the Scandinavian look and for me, anything more than three tones makes a space feel busy. I like to use earth tones plus a shade that pops out,’ says Andrew. He further explains his philosophy thus: ‘If you walk into a jeweller and look at a tray of diamonds, they will look beautiful, but they will not have the same effect as just one of those diamonds on a person’s hand as like this, it really stands out.’ In this house, the ‘diamonds’ include the staircase, the colourful painting above the sofa and in the bathrooms, a statement wall of patterned tiles. Andrew and those who live there now are very happy with the end result. ‘The house is ergonomically correct and so it gives a feeling of a larger space than it truly is,’ says Andrew. ‘Every room is perfectly proportioned and feels desirable.’ A feel good house in every sense.

I

n a small home, design details really matter. They have the potential to elevate a space that could otherwise be overshadowed by its lack of size. This apartment features a number of design flourishes that transform what would otherwise be a somewhat dull space into one that has real character. Most striking are the graphic cement floor tiles in the living room that instantly give it style and personality, allowing the rest of the room to be left relatively minimal, thereby ensuring a spacious and uncluttered feel. ‘The original tiles didn’t have any character and were therefore not worthy of retention,’ architect Robert Cassar who with fellow architect Mark Muscat, was responsible for renovating the apartment. ‘The cement floor tiles in the living room are newly made by very skilled craftsmen in the traditional method and these tiles really do give an attractive vintage look.’ Forming part of a block built in the 1960s, the apartment had been abandoned for some time and featured a layout that did not make the most of the space, with rooms in a configuration that was very much of its time. In transforming it, the architects demolished a wall at the entrance, to create a larger living room, which balances the expanded size of the kitchen and dining area which was also newly created. Other changes included turning the original kitchen into a bedroom to create a two-bedroom property, one of which now has an ensuite bathroom, and, to make the most of every square centimetre, a small balcony

within the internal yard was opened up and roofed over to form part of the living room, which now works as a study. ‘Due to all the changes and design details, the more open-plan layout and the modifications we made to the apertures to flood the place with light, it now simply feels like a lovely place to be in and to live in,’ says Robert. ‘With every new job I always make it a point to remind myself that architecture is an applied art and that therefore, the importance of function is as important as that of aesthetic in creating the perfect space. Interior design is, of course, encapsulated within architecture and is therefore part and parcel of any architectural project. In this case the interior design aspect is what the project was mainly about. Once the general layout of the apartment was designed and the subsequent structural alterations carried out, the detailed aesthetics were key and the choice of materials really made all a difference.’

SENSE OF SECURITY

IN THIS AGE OF HIGHTECH CONNECTIVITY AND STATE-OF-THE-ART CHOICES, HOME SECURITY IS THE LATEST SECTOR TO GO SMART, USING THE LATEST WI-FI-ENABLED TECHNOLOGY TO GIVE YOU UP-TO-THE-MINUTE KNOWLEDGE ON THE STATUS OF YOUR HOME. VISUAL SECURITY SYSTEMS AND CCTV If you like the idea of having eyes on your home wherever you are in the world and at any time of the day or night, then the latest developments in CCTV technology could help you achieve that. Gone are the days when security cameras would record onto tapes for you to pore over should anything go wrong. Today complete security systems give you constant connectivity, allowing you to login to your home at any time, whether you are worried that something is amiss or you simply want to check in to see that your dog has not run out of drinking water. An alert to your phone will warn of an unauthorised entry; you can even monitor the break-in live. ‘The current must-have in security is for people to be able to control everything from one mobile app – be it their CCTV and intruder alarm, or their intercom,’ explains Neal Azzopardi

from Global Tech, which is the authorised distributor in Malta for Hikvision, the world’s largest supplier of video surveillance products . ‘Hikvision actually achieves all this via the advanced synergy of technologies that is delivered in a small, compact and discreet panel to give you full control and setup via the Hik-Connect smart device application and iVMS, as well as video verification through revolutionary Intruder Verification as a Service (IVaaS). Integration is at the core of combining intrusion and video like never before. Hik-Connect compatibility allows for full control of the system from anywhere, enabling users to remotely arm, disarm and monitor, as well as check history and receive push notifications of any events. It provides a truly holistic approach when it comes to knowing what is going on in your home at all times.’

INTRUDER ALARMS

Intruder alarms now include smartphone access, wireless systems, touch screen pads, alarm monitoring automation, energy management and can be configured with motion detectors.Firetech

Another recommended choice is the intruder alarm installed to protect against home intruders. ‘Homes without intruder alarms are high on the hit list,’ says Danjela Bianchi from Firetech. ‘When you have a home alarm system expertly checked and advertised by outdoor sirens and windows stickers or signs, you make it clear to criminals that the probability of getting caught is exceptionally high.’ Intruder alarm technology has also developed over the past five years. ‘If your intruder alarm system was installed earlier, then it may be worth looking into what has changed, as there are so many new advancements you might not be aware of, including smartphone access, wireless systems, touch screen pads, alarm monitoring automation and energy management,’ says Danjela. Wireless options are available too, which Danjela says look smarter and are generally easier to install. ‘They can be removed if you move to a new house, and use battery-powered sensors that communicate with a control panel using radio signals. Wired systems usually need to be installed by a professional, as the wires will need to be hidden, so labour costs are higher,’ she says. Intruder systems can now even be configured if you have pets at home. ‘Typically, any small pet that weighs less than 18kg will be immune to these sensors,’ Danjela explains. ‘But we do have pet-immune motion detectors that use heat sensors to tell the difference between your four-legged friend walking around the house and a human who may or may not have any business being there. Reading body temperature and infrared emissions also help these sensors distinguish an animal from a human being. This advanced technology means your pets can roam freely without accidentally triggering a worrisome and potentially costly alarm.’

SECURITY FEATURE

Keyless entry systems allow more flexibility when letting people into your home - perfect for AirBnb and other rental systems. Global Tech

Keyless Entry Systems Another tech trend in the security sphere isn’t so much about keeping people out, as it is about letting them in. In fact, as more and more homeowners choose to short-let their properties, the need for remote solutions has increased – and keyless entry systems provide a viable answer. ‘The traditional mechanical lock and key system doesn’t just pose a security risk because keys can easily be duplicated, but are also logistically cumbersome,’ says Ing. Robert Frendo, technical director for AQS MEDITERRANEAN Ltd. ‘These keyless systems provide the solution – they can be programmed remotely, and used in a number of ways to allow controlled access to an apartment.’

HW

Keyless entry systems allow you to grant entry remotely; up to 200 codes can be stored in the doorlock at one time. AQS

And much like many of the options mentioned earlier, these systems can also be managed through an app on your mobile so that you can grant your new tenant access when she arrives, let a maintenance man in, or even make it easy for a friend to pop in and borrow something. ‘Everything can be done remotely, and up to 200 codes can be stored in the doorlock at one time,’ Robert continues. ‘Plus, you don’t need to worry about being locked out in the unlikely event that the battery fails, because the door can still be opened with an RFID card or keychain. It gives complete peace of mind to know that you always know exactly who is coming and going from your home.’

Add wireless devices to your system with an app so you can view the status of doors and windows, monitor property occupancy and view any alerts related to the security alarm, fire and flooding. You can also automate your property so the lights switch on when the door is opened and switch off when empty, as well as set outdoor light schedules. AQS

HW SECURITY FEATURE SMART DOORBELLS & INTERCOMS

Smart doorbells such as KONX KW03/KW05 have the capability to warn you if someone approaches your door, can connect you directly to your door when you’re at work or even abroad, can provide a live video feed to your smart device, and can even record interactions which it captures automatically. Smart Doorbells Malta

Smart doorbells have been widespread in the United States for some time, and are now taking off in Britain and here in Malta. In a nutshell, your doorbell can become ‘smart’ when you hook it up to your smartphone, enabling you to receive an alert on your phone when someone rings the bell. You can then choose to chat to them, let them in, or even tell them to leave a package with your neighbours. ‘These are what we call the new generation of doorbells,’ explains Kevin Pisani from Smart Doorbells Malta. ‘A traditional doorbell simply activates a chime within the premises for only the occupants to hear. A smart doorbell has the capability to warn you if someone approaches your door, can connect you directly to your door when you’re at work or even abroad, can provide a live video feed to your smart device, and can even record interactions which it captures automatically. ‘And there are lots of options, depending on the service you would like to end up with such as cloud storage or no cloud storage, Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, battery-powered or mains. Plus, you can decide if you’d like to be able to unlock the door remotely, too. However it does have to be said that the complexity of installing one of these smart doorbells increases as more features are added to it, so I would suggest using it for its main feature – keeping an eye on what’s going on at your door and receiving live notifications.’ Intercoms, too, have come on in leaps and bounds, giving you the ability to see who is beyond your front door from a screen in any room in the house. The Hikvision Villa intercom system, available locally from Global Tech, for example, ‘allows users to call multiple indoor stations at the same time and unlock a door at any of the indoor stations,’ says Neal. ‘They can also receive all call information and unlock doors remotely and conveniently using the app on a mobile device. Plus, the fisheye camera on the door station renders images clearly both day and night. With the record-to-NVR function, you can check on what’s happening on their doorstep. We like it because it is the best of both: security and convenience.’

APERTURES Finally, nothing says security like strong windows and doors. One of the latest trends in this area is aluminium thermal break (ATB) – which is composed of two skins of aluminium, one on the exterior and the other on the interior with a low thermal conductive polyamide in-between. ‘The polyamide serves as an insulation barrier between the two skins,’ says Kevin Gerada from ServGroup. ‘People today want security and insulation, as well as very large apertures – so this is the unquestionable solution.’ And it isn’t just the double layer that makes

these windows particularly safe; they also have multiple locks on different sides of the apertures, secure glass, and thicker profiles, and can also be connected to your alarm system. ‘Safety is such an understandable priority today, and that begins with having your space secured,’ Kevin says. ‘An aperture closes the biggest holes in your walls, so, if you are looking for security, don’t make the mistake of putting your aperture budget down. Remember, an aperture needs to last much longer than a sofa or TV, and you should really opt for the best.’

Strong windows and doors are a must for ultra security. Apertures available from ServGroup

TECHNO MIRROR

Bathroom radiators and towel rails fall into two categories - those which blend into the room and those that stand out as a design items. The award-winning Scaletta heated towel rail definitely fits into the latter category. Shaped like a ladder, and with an electric power supply, Scaletta is made of aluminium in a wide range of colours, and it is available in two versions, wall-mounted and freestanding; the latter does not require installation and can be placed anywhere in the bathroom and fitted with a practical shelf. Scaletta can be accessorized with Regman: a manual temperature regulation device designed to keep constant the surface temperature set for the heated towel rail. SS Bathrooms

Tech comes into the bathroom with Noken’s mirror that incorporates demisting technology and LED lights turned on with a sensor, along with Bluetooth connectivity, and an optional shelf for storing a mobile phone. Available in two sizes140x50cm and 80x50cm. Satariano

The Magic of

Marble

Marble is arguably the most luxurious of materials and now the trend is to be bold - think large-scale as well as high pattern and colour

Bookmatched marble Bookmatched marble instantly creates a statement and really does showcase marble as a work of art. ‘It certainly makes a dramatic and stunning effect, so we recommend installing it in a place where it can be appreciated and where it will “age” well over the years,’ says Owen Farrugia, Director of Sales at Halmann Vella. ‘With even engineered stone suppliers mimicking the bookmatched look these days, we believe that book matching will be the next big thing in the world of surfaces.’ Bookmatched marble is achieved using stone slabs, each of which has been split down the centre to produce a mirror image of two identical grains. These are then put together with the veining matching up to create one unbroken pattern (the slabs open up like a book, hence the name)

Strong-veined marble The dramatic look of strong-veined marble has been growing in popularity across the interior design world. Again, this is marble at its decorative best, the pronounced veins creating strong pattern, especially with contrasting shades of not just monochrome but black and gold or red and gold . ‘With such unique patterns you could eventually do a feature wall using the bookmatching,’ says Ramon Cassar from SS Bathrooms who suggests Calacatta and Statuario which has a veining pattern that is generally linear and soft in appearance. ‘Calacatta Gold is very rare and exclusive,’ he adds. Traditionally breccia, where large fragments are bound together with smaller ones, was seen as the poorer relation, but it is now being seen in luxury bathrooms, the eye-catching pattern making a real design statement

Purity of white

5.

The understated luxury of white marble, where there is little veining for a neutral background continues to be popular. ‘When choosing white marble, it’s important to choose a high grade to ensure minimal veining and inclusions, which are vulnerable to damage in the shower environment,’ says Clifton Galea of Tiles and Marble. ‘Lower grades of marble tend to have more veins and inclusions. Some marble has a relatively high iron content and can literally rust, discolouring the stone, if not properly sealed.’

Working with

Marble

Although a strong stone, marble is also quite porous and as a result, can stain easily with materials which are frequently used in the bathroom. ‘It requires maintenance, but that maintenance is not really time consuming,’ says Denise Mercieca at Halmann Vella. ‘Most times it’s a matter of clearing up spills immediately, sealing the material regularly and using a squeegee in the shower after every use to reduce soap scum. One lifestyle that it’s not very apt for, though, is a busy family bathroom where you’re always on the go and cleaning after every use isn’t really an option.’ Says Clifton Galea of Tiles & Marble: ‘A lot of architects and designers encourage home owners to limit the use of marble to low-traffic zones, such as vanity tops and side tables because the scratch-and-stain prone nature of the stone makes it seem impractical for busier applications such as countertops and flooring. As long as you are prepared to commit a little more diligence when it comes to upkeep, or a perspective shift when it comes to the imperfections caused by daily life, then it’s suitable for any lifestyle.’ ‘Marble in bathrooms can be either used as a background floor and walls - or as an important furnishing element as an added feature piece,’ says Ramon Cassar from SS Bathrooms. ‘It can cover the whole environment or be a detail that is noticed, and which makes the environment unique.’ Marble works for all bathroom sizes. ‘The advantage of using marble is that it can be tailor-made to fit any bathroom’s needs, whether the bathroom is tapered, curved or in a squarish layout,’ says Denise. The usual rules apply when choosing a colour - darker shades of marble will make a room feel small while light-coloured marbles will open up the space and give the impression of a larger room. ‘However, while there are no rules when it comes to which type of marble to use in a bathroom, there are a number of design tips one can use depending on the desired finish,’ continues Denise. ‘For instance, light beige marble such as Crema Marfil can be combined with white to add a subtle warmth. For a starker look one can opt for an all over marble look, or else break down the look a little by using differently shaped or sized tiles. Blending wood and marble is always a good idea as wood warms up the room. One can also play with textures such as a ribbed finish, bamboo finish, brushed, hammered, polished, honed etc. Usually feature walls in bathrooms work very well, especially if one opts for particular and rare stones or solid handwash basins.’ If questioning whether marble is still a viable, sustainable option – according to the experts, it is. It offers that extraordinary touch that natural materials seem to, and whilst today it might be ontrend, the fact is that it never goes out of fashion. ‘It’s delicate, needs attention and care, but it’s also enduring, noble and eternal as a work of art,’ says Ramon. ‘ With today’s technology, treatment and installation techniques marble has improved upon a lot of its disadvantages which were mainly caused by its natural element.’ 075

Divine Inspiration When it comes to decorating a bathroom, there’s now a tantalising choice, from a variety of colour and pattern options to wooden mosaic blocks and neon. Here’s what works...

Make a statement with a mirror Once a mirror in the bathroom was a design afterthought, installed as part of the cabinet. Today, however, the mirror has become a key part of the bathroom’s look. Here, an enormous round mirror, made bespoke, is used to great effect, the mirror reflecting the planting outside, making the space feel larger and lighter. The hexagonal tiles are a smart alternative to the usual rectangular ones and the contemporary shape is a contrast to the traditionalstyle basins. Above them, round mirrors balance the larger one 077

From strawberry coloured bathtubs, courtesy of India Mahdavi for Bisazza to Kartell’s tangerine mirror for Laufen, colour is back in the bathroom. For a more understated look, plug into the trend for pastels. In this Art Deco-inspired bathroom, pale pink has been teamed with shades of green, whilst black, seen in the tiles as well as the frames of the shower, adds sophistication and prevents the pastels from feeling overly sweet. The vanity is topped with from Caesarstone White Attica

Decorate with a mural Decoration in the bathroom used to be restricted to a border of mosaic tiles but now murals that decorate an entire wall are being used to create the perfect vibe whether bright and cheery or something more moody. Rev it up with pattern power Use pattern to create a statement wall or shower. Here, the tiles in this bathroom are a riotous celebration of pattern and give the bathroom a real sense of fun. The wooden shelf, made from one long piece of cut wood, works well with the monochrome scheme 081

Use real wood Wood effect tiles in the bathroom have become an effective way of bringing a sense of nature and warmth into the bathroom but real wood can have a place too - just make sure it’s not placed where it will be drenched with water, and the room is well ventilated. These wood cubes - L’Antic colonial mosaic tiles by Porcelanosa at Satariano have different shades and textures for a stunning statement wall 082

Think about texture Adding texture to a bathroom has the same effect as in other rooms of the house, adding visual interest and making the room feel warmer. This bathroom combines a number of textures for a personality-packed space, from the rough white walls contrasted with the smooth floor and steel shelf for the white basins, to the distressed mirror and side table that’s a hunk of stone 083

OUTSIDE IN GARDENS FOOD TRAVEL

STRIKE A NOTE

Inspired by venues seen in the rest of Europe, jazz musician and architect Carlo Muscat along with partner architect Matthew Cachia Zammit set about converting two garages along the Ta’ Xbiex Seafront into Storeroom, a cool live music venue and bar. The garages were excavated to make room for a mezzanine level and the wall between the two demolished to create a larger space. Inside, it’s a combination of concrete and wood. ‘Our main goal in terms of materials was to have as much wood as we could,’ says Carlo. ‘Apart from the aesthetic qualities, it also has excellent acoustic properties, so this kind of resolved a lot of our issues in terms of decision-making.’

PINK GRAPEFRUIT TART Serves 2

A delicate combination of sweet and sour, this gorgeous dessert is easy to make

INGREDIENTS

Use ready-made shortcrust pastry Pink grapefruit curd 4 whole eggs 96g sugar 175ml grapefruit juice 15ml zest the grapefruit 1/2 of a gelatin leaf Knob of butter METHOD

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Roll out the shortcrust pastry into two 12cm circles and place in the tart shells. With a fork pierce the bottom to prevent the dough from rising too much while baking. Bake for roughly 12 min or until the tart case is golden. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely before filling. To make the pink grapefruit curd, whisk the eggs, sugar and juice in a glass bowl until combined. Place on a double boiler and continue to whisk until the mixture starts to thicken. Bloom the gelatin in a cup with cold water for around 5 minutes. When the mixture thickens, add the gelatin and continue to whisk until all is incorporated into the mixture. Remove from the heat and add the butter and zest. Allow to cool. Pour the curd into the tart and then refrigerate until the curd is set. Finish with a dusting of icing sugar or garnish as you wish; pictured are berries and small meringues.

BABY CALAMARI Serves 2

Baby calamari is given a flavour twist with an Asian / French fusion

INGREDIENTS 400g baby calamari 2 garlic cloves 20ml extra virgin olive oil 1 fresh shallot, chopped 1tsp whole grain mustard 1/2 Fresh chilli Fresh mint Fresh coriander Salt Crushed black pepper METHOD On a low heat fry the shallot, garlic and chilli. When the shallot becomes a little translucent, add the baby calamari and continue to fry for two to three minutes. Add the fresh mint and coriander and when cooked, add the whole grain mustard, salt and crushed black pepper and mix well. Place the baby calamari on a plate and serve with a sprinkling of finely chopped parsley and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.

GEORGES’ FAVOURITE

Wine Pairings

SCORPION FISH (LEFT) 2017, VICTORIA HEIGHTS CHARDONNAY, DOK GOZO, SUPERIOR You must head straight to Burgundy, no wait, Gozo for the best match, choosing this sun-kissed, full-flavoured island white. The fruitiness and rounded quality of this 100 percent Gozitan world-class Chardonnay is sublime. The wine gives and gives generously, as islanders do. Its ripe flavours of stone fruit work with the scorpion fish to make it a real treat.

BABY CALAMARI (MIDDLE) 2018, MEDINA VERMENTINO ZIBIBBO, DOK MALTA Tread carefully; the calamari’s gentle flavour is not the sort of thing to pair with strong oakey wines. Reach out a tentacle and wrap it tenderly around this cool, mouth-watering, well-balanced dry white wine, made predominantly from (hush, Malta’s finest) Vermentino grapes. It has a fresh scent of white flowers and flavours of white flesh fruit and zest.

PINK GRAPEFRUIT TART (RIGHT) N.V. GELLEWZA FRIZZANTE, I.G.T. MALTESE ISLANDS The grapefruit tart is tricky with wine. And the sharper (and more delicious) it is, the harder it is to find a good match. There is a trick you can pull, though. Serve the tart with a good dollop of cream on the side (what a hardship!) and, voila. This zippy, refreshing strawberry pink will get you in the summery swing.

Middle Eastern Promise It is a part of the world steeped in ancient history, but today across the Middle East, new architecture and cutting edge design are being built in all major cities. Aside from China, the Gulf region especially is the site of one of the most intense concentrations of building anywhere in the world. It's no surprise too that this is one of the world's richest regions. With lofty aspirations to join the world stage, plenty of money, and a desire for the most lavish and innovative architecture, the Middle East is a region that design fans need to go and explore - the sights on offer are often breathtaking, and never short of ambition. Here's a hit-list of the region's architectural delights Words: Chris Beanland

National Museum of Qatar, Doha (top) French designer Jean Nouvel's majestic new museum for Qatar on the corniche of the state's capital is a bizarre but beguiling bashed-together confection of hundreds of flying concrete saucers which look like digestive biscuits, wafers, or those Discos crisps from the 1980s. The complex's landscaping is eerily windswept and feels not quite finished, yet its shadows and shade create cool spaces away from the dusty desert heat. Inside, air conditioned galleries tell of Qatar's pearl fishing heritage and display vintage vehicles and other artifacts. Louvre Abu Dhabi (above) The big money gallery opening of 2017, this is another Jean Nouvel building which brought the big hitters of the Louvre collection from Paris to the UAE. A shiny metallic roof and galleries plunged into water combine with extremely expensive material finishes – marble, precious metal - to create a millionaire's playground. The Frame, Dubai (adjacent page) This huge sculpture measuring 150 x 95 metres has transformed the Dubai skyline since its completion last year. The point of it is to frame – literally – views of Dubai. And it does so on a gigantic scale. The Zabeel Park edifice is currently in legal limbo over whether Fernando Donis or Dubai city were responsible for the design. Either way, it's stunning. 105

Museum of Islamic Art, Doha (top) Chinese-American architect IM Pei was persuaded to do this job despite technically having retired. The master of modernism dreamt up this serene series of blocky buildings perched on an artificial island stretching out from the coast of Qatar. The airy spaces inside are supplemented by the finest furniture built on a bespoke basis – even the sofas in the corridors are edged with marble and the coffered concrete ceiling is particularly appealing too. The building displays the best of Islamic art through the centuries. Tripoli Fairgrounds, Lebanon (above, middle) Oscar Niemeyer is famous for his Brazilian brutalism but he came to Lebanon in 1962 to design a modernist exhibition complex in the city of Tripoli which still stands to this day. Comprising al fresco theatres, pavilions, landscaping and even a helipad, it has fallen into decline. But in March this year a competition was announced to restore the site and turn it into knowledge and innovation campus. Elma Arts Hotel, Zichron Ya'akov, Israel (above) Built in the 1960s by architect Yaakov Rechter as the Mivtachim Sanatorium by a pensions company who offered Tel Aviv's workers a holiday in the sun, the building near the coast has been transformed into the Elma Arts Hotel, a luxurious design-led property with 39 rooms and a concert hall which hosts big names in classical music and jazz. 106

Sharjah Art Foundation - Al Mureijah Art Spaces, UAE (top) The unusual job of turning old, unused buildings on this city's Corniche into new art spaces was preferred over the more conventional course of knocking down and starting again in this case. The result was new spaces for Sharjah's Art Biennial. The architecture has been nominated for the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture. Queen Alia Airport, Amman (above) Norman Foster is famous for such airport terminals as London Stansted, Beijing Capital and Hong Kong. In Amman he used concrete piers and canopies in a sculptural manner, complete with large panels of glazing to give the new Queen Alia Airport terminal a light quality which also allows the runways and planes to be seen by passengers moving through the airport. Msheireb Downtown Doha (left) This massive project in the centre of the Qatari capital is one of the most eco-friendly city districts in the world. The 35 hectare development won the World Architecture Future PrizeAward back in 2012. It features solar panels, shaded streets, and LEED gold level buildings. Architects including Gensler, Allies & Morrison and Eric Parry worked on the huge scheme, which includes a new Metro station, residential, culture and shopping, and a Mandarin Oriental and MGallery hotel.

Qatar Airways flies daily direct from Malta to Doha, with connections to Middle East cities (qatarairways. com). Chris stayed at the MGallery Alwadi Doha www.alwadihoteldoha.com

And coming soon...Opus, Dubai (left) The late, great Zaha Hadid's design for this landmark Dubai building is much delayed and much anticipated but is finally slated to open next year. Opus is a building that will blend outdoors and indoors, and is every bit as curvaceous and non-symmetrical as fans of her work would expect. It will include the ME by Melia design hotel at its heart. 107
