EDITOR’S LETTER

This Issue. One of the most fascinating aspects of an interior design and architecture magazine is seeing how homes come together and the inspiration and creative process behind them. The stories are always wide-ranging but the first home in this issue certainly wins the accolade of being different - its design was largely dictated by the needs of two wildcats and the legal restrictions needed to be able to keep them. Turning what is essentially a cage into a house, and a super-chic one at that, has been pulled off in stylish fashion - see for yourself! With winter behind us, thoughts inevitably turn to alfresco living and so a major focus of this issue is on the outside space. With the garden fast becoming another multi-functional area of the home, we’ve taken a look at what you need to do to turn it into a place for relaxing but also entertaining. We also report on Salone del Mobile 2019, the annual design fair that showcases the latest new designs and gives us an insight into what is inspiring designers today. While some years ago it was the chair that was pushing the design boundaries, today it is lighting and at Milan there were some incredible ones being showcased. Unsurprisingly, sustainability was a dominant theme but it is one that continues beyond the fair. The desire for green architecture is growing as people look not only to be more eco-friendly, but also to save on their energy bills. In this issue, we give you a guide on what is available locally to help you have an energy efficient home. Plus there’s the latest on living room style, easy barbecue dishes and more. Enjoy!

ANYONE FOR COFFEE? THE LUXURY OF SLEEP

IT IS AN ICONIC PIECE OF KIT – THE EXPRESSO COFFEE MAKER INVENTED BY ALFONSO BIALETTI THAT, SINCE THE 1950S, HAS BECOME FAMOUS WORLDWIDE FOR BREWING AN EXCELLENT CUP OF COFFEE BY USING STEAM TO PUSH BOILING WATER THROUGH GROUND COFFEE

British architect David Chipperfield, however, shouldered this weight of design history and created his own take on the classic coffee maker for Alessi. ‘The Moka is a symbol of everyday life,’ commented David Chipperfield. ‘When you move from one home to another, you have your books and your records, some clothes and often a coffee pot. When I was asked to design, or better redesign, the Moka, I found it interesting to reflect back on the object’s intrinsic nature. ‘The noise of screwing and unscrewing it, the rumbling sound it makes when the coffee’s ready, these everyday occurrences become engrained in your memories… my idea was to do something that would intensify these memories; not to invent a coffee maker but to re-intensify the history of this object, which, in my opinion is a kind of archetype with its own – and an independent – authority. I wanted to preserve its most important qualities: the material, the sound, the essential shape of its corners.’

Chipperfield’s design is also made from die-cast aluminium with a distinctive faceted body. However, two extra faces have been added to ‘make the geometry stronger, to better integrate the proportions and to insert the spout, which is part of one of the facets,’ explained Chipperfield. It also has a flat lid, a more curved bottom at its base as well as a more ergonomic handle. Alfonso Bialetti was the maternal grandfather of Alberto Alessi who credits the success of the original to its simplicity and its affordability – plus a major post-war advertising campaign. ‘The fact is, the Moka left its mark on the public, especially but not only in Italy, an effect that still lasts today,’ wrote Alberto Alessi in an article for the brand’s magazine. ‘It formalised a new domestic ritual that was contemporary and intimate.’ And which, despite the advent of Nespresso machines and now Cold-Brew coffee makers, has an enduring popularity.

BEDTIME STORY First designed in 1973, the Aurende is one of the most popular beds in the Netherlands - it is reckoned that in every street in the country there will be a home with an Aurende bed. Back in 1973, its rounded shape and bright colours were revolutionary but the design has stood the test of time to become a design classic. ‘I wanted to make a bed that lasts a lifetime - lots of beds were made of chipboard which is easily damaged - and that is easy to assemble and just as easy to disassemble,’ says the designer Franse de la Haye. Today it is has been updated in new colours and aluminium details including a variety of oak stains including natural oak and golden yellow oak. Boris Arcidiacono

SMART NEW LOOK

OK Home has refurbished a new floor to showcase a mix of lighting, furniture and accessories. Brands include leading glassware makers Kosta Boda, awardwinning cookware and cutlery company Grunwerg and lighting from a Luxembourgbased Filament Style. OK Home LG Signature OLED TV R

NOW YOU SEE IT... ‘INVISIBLE TECHNOLOGY’ THAT BLENDS IN TO THE BACKGROUND OF A LIVING SPACE IS A MAJOR TREND AND NOWHERE IS THAT MORE EVIDENT THAN WITH THE TELEVISION, DESIGNERS KEEN TO REDUCE THE IMPACT OF AN EVER- LARGER BLACK RECTANGLE IN A ROOM.

B&O Beovision Harmony

Panasonic Vitrine

Samsung was the first to step into this design arena with the Serif TV designed by the Bouroullec brothers that has been recently updated to include an ambient view that resembles artwork on the screen, and then the Frame TV by Yves Behar which looks like a framed work of art. Now, three more big names have stepped into the design fray Bang & Olufsen has unveiled its Beovision Harmony television which folds down into a sculptural form when not in use. At the same time LG has collaborated with architects Foster + Partners to create the Signature OLED TV R, which, they say, is the world’s first television that rolls out of sight. And Panasonic, working with Vitra and designer Daniel Rybakken, has unveiled a prototype called the Vitrine - a TV made of a simple wood frame holding what looks like a single pane of glass that, when the TV is switched on, becomes an OLED screen. The Beovision Harmony sits low on the floor, with two oak and aluminium covers partially obscuring the black screen. When the TV is turned on, these panels fan out ‘like a butterfly opening its wings’ and the thin OLED screen rises above them. The panels, which are also available in a two-tone grey fabric and aluminium covers, contain the sound system, and the grading pattern on the front is actually designed to optimise acoustic performance. The television can be placed on a floor stand or on a wall bracket. LG’s Signature OLED TV R features a flexible screen that is just 0.2 millimetres thick, with a sprung steel backing for support. When not watching television, users push a button to retract the screen into its rectangular aluminium base, which doubles as the speaker and has a matching Kvadrat fabric cover. The television can also be set at a ‘Line View’, a midway option where only the top part of the screen is unrolled to display content such as a clock, photos or home dashboard. In its design, currently only a prototype, Panasonic’s Vitrine gets rid of the black screen altogether, the glass allowing decorative objects to be displayed behind it, blending the television into the room’s decor. 019

NAME TO KNOW

Glassware for Serax

PAOLA NAVONE From glassware and bowls to sofas and hotels, Paola Navone’s design portfolio is vast and varied, all of it reflecting her sought-after global aesthetic

P

aola Navone may be based in Milan but she is very much a global designer with a reach that goes far beyond Italy and even Europe. As well as working for many big Italian brands such as Gervasoni, where she is artistic director, Molteni, Bisazza and Alessi, and overseeing the debut collection of Giorgio Armani’s debut Armani Casa range, she has created homeware for American powerhouse brands Anthropologie and Crate and Barrel as well as cool Dutch brand Serax, plus designing hotels and resorts in Asia. Most recently she created a ‘new visual identity’ for seven McDonalds restaurants in France, giving them clashing prints and pops of colour to create an ‘imperfect, almost artisanal look’. This international reach, however, is not new - it is how she has worked for all the 47 years of her design life, collecting ideas and influences from all over the world, and garnering a reputation for an eclectic and cosmopolitan style. She describes is thus: ‘I’m very curious – I go around everywhere and capture things. Small, large, shape and colour – they all go into a basket I have in the back of my head. When I need to produce something, the act of designing is very fast because things just come out of the basket’. Her studio’s remit is similarly wide and varied. ‘Italy is typically more furniture but I like to do the little things, from tableware to glasswork, to textiles as well as furniture,’ she says. ‘It is interesting to do everything.’ This open attitude as well as a desire to do things differently has driven Paola throughout her career. She graduated in architecture from

McDonald’s near Gare d’Austerlitz in Paris

www.paolanavone.it the Polytechnic University of Turin in 1973 but was eager to find another path. ‘I was always looking to escape,’ she says. She found it in the burgeoning avant garde movement which showed her ‘there was an alternative to the job of building normal architecture,’ she says. ‘There were firms like Archigram in London and Superstudio in Florence, and Paolo Soleri’s Arcosanti in America. I began to run around to see these architects, to see what the possibilities were besides the traditional education I was getting’. She put all that she saw and learnt into a thesis – and then, having met someone in a bar who was going to Africa, she set off for Cameroon where she designed houses for a year. ‘While I was there my thesis went around everywhere,’ she says. ‘The day I came back I got a telephone call from [Alessandro] Mendini and went to Milano and I am still there.’ As well as Mendini, she worked alongside Ettore Sottsass Jr. and Andrea Branzi in the radical Studio Alchimia, a precursor to the famous Memphis movement. ‘It was crazy, what we did,’ she says. ‘Working like mad to produce the utterly useless,’ she says. ‘But it was a catalyst. It produced a lot of energy and gradually, much later, our inventive thinking has been absorbed by industry.’ Striking out on her own, she worked with big names such as Capellini and Alessi. Her breakthrough moment came when, in the early 1980s, she won a competition by European laminate producer Abet Laminati. ‘They asked several people to design laminates, and I

Lacquered stainless steel chair for Serax

found this so intriguing that instead of sending one design, I sent 50!’ she says. ‘I worked with them for 30 years.’ Her work for them also won her the Osaka International Design Award in 1983. The other major influence in Paola Navone’s design aesthetic has been South East Asia where she worked for over a decade as a consultant for UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) and the World Bank. ‘In Italy it is more industry while there, the environment is about craft,’ she says. ‘I worked under very different conditions and in a different cultural environment.’ In Asia she has designed a number of hotels around the world for Christina Ong, the famed fashion retailer and hotelier behind COMO Hotels and Resorts, as well as those for Design Hotels, all of them introducing the unexpected from concrete combined with pops of colours in Phuket’s Point Yamu hotel and in Erosantorini, Greece, painted carpets on a concrete deck next to an infinity pool that cascades over three levels. Her furniture, on the other hand, tends to be softer, with over-sized pieces in gentle lines a feature. ‘I don’t like to invade the space of people so much that it hurts,’ she once said. ‘Maybe you wake up with a headache in the morning because you drank too much the night before, and when you have to face a chair that’s aggressive, it’s wrong. There’s a difference between product design and interior design. When I do an interior, I sometimes like to do stronger projects because I’m designing a stage for people. But I don’t like aggressive products’.

The trend for the home as a haven is creating ever more luxurious R&R options. Playa combines Italian style with the latest in spa technology to create a stylish and relaxing minipool. Enjoy a gentle hydromassage in heated water with soft sunbathing areas and the submersible cushions made from hand-woven fabrics. Lightweight and modular and completely customisable, it can be placed on a terrace or patio, in the garden, or inside a house. Charles Micallef Swimming Pools

DURABLE DECKING

Long a popular choice as an outdoor hardsurface, decking’s durability and maintenance, however, are well-known issues unless using expensive exotic woods. This new decking hopes to change that. Thanks to a patented production process that impregnates wax into wood, so changing its physical and mechanical properties without altering its aesthetics, this decking comes with high-level durability and dimensional stability. For example, pine, usually only slightly durable in its natural state outside, acquires the typical characteristics of exotic woods that are known for their high durability. Maintenance is fast and inexpensive - a pressure washer is enough to restore the decking to its original aesthetics. Brands International

ECO-STYLE

Expect to see more and more sustainable products on the market as companies look to re-purpose existing materials or, as with this new stoneware, use waste products from industrial processes. Ecotech/1.0 by Italy’s Florim is the first fine porcelain stoneware made on an industrial scale using powders, particles and other industrial residue. A totally new composite material, it’s suitable for exterior and non-slip applications, and in various sizes and colours, it can also be used to achieve continuity between interior and exterior spaces. Milan Design Week 2019

‘19

Milan’s annual Salone del Mobile came to a close in April after a highly successful six days. Just over 386,000 people from 181 countries took in displays from 2,418 exhibitors from 43 different countries. The fair, in its 58th year, now spreads over the entire city, ranging from enormous multi-million euro displays to smaller pop-ups. This year, bi-annual Euroluce was a major draw, showcasing the latest in both interior and exterior lighting. Here are some of the highlights of the show...

ICONIC EYES

Originally made as a one-off for a German museum and using BMW headlights after being commissioned by the car manufacturer, designer Bernhard Dessecker approached Moooi’s Marcel Wanders who agreed to put the egg-shaped chandelier into production. It uses eye-like lenses of frosted glass set inside chrome rings, individually lit by LED lights

INSPIRING INSTALLATIONS

Each year, brands vie to come up with installations that resonate and linger in the awareness - no mean feat considering the sensory overload that is the fair. These are among the most talked about and Instagrammed... LAND

WIRELINE A power cable is an unlikely design inspiration but Formafantasma’s Wireline for Flos made it work - and brilliantly. The cables are contained within belts that resemble giant rubber bands and an LED light tube is suspended in between. ‘The lamp plays on the contrast between the industrial feeling of the rubber and the sophistication of glass,’ say designers Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin

COORDINATES One of the most talented designers working in light today, Michael Anastassiades created a number of standout designs for Flos including Coordinates which is a light but looks like art

POLE Creating large curves spanning between walls, ceilings and floors, this is certainly statement lighting. Designed by Philippe Malouin, the solid but flexible light came about by accident after the designer put together collapsible tent poles, a reel of LED tape, cable ties and four bricks that were lying around after an exhibition

OE QUASI LIGHT Olafur Eliasson was inspired by mathematical forms for this piece and both he and Louis Poulsen settled on the equation ‘good light = good life’. Using 90-per cent recycled aluminium and recyclable and reusable materials that can easily be replaced, Eliasson stated, ‘this light was created with longevity in mind’

Lighting has become an area of major design creativity. Throughout Milan there were lighting installations that thrilled and inspired. ‘A predominant theme was the use of brass and, of course, always evolving LED technology,’ says architect Stephanie Cassar from Stephanie Cassar Architectural Design. ‘However, what stood out in particular was the way lighting in certain instances was taken to a new quasi-metaphysical dimension. The viewer was invited to experience and participate in lighting installations which stimulated the senses and provided food for thought.’ Here are her highlights, the brands locally being represented by Elektra Ltd. FLOS Flos, which exhibited at the fair as part of Design Holding, a new global high-end interior design group, boasted a vast stand and amongst its many new products was a re-edition of the 1969 Chiara lamp by Mario Bellini (standard and table) in different finishes (stainless steel in polished, matte bronze or polished black versions) to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the first edition of this light. Completely new was In Vitro by Philippe Stark which is, in the designer’s words, ‘a little miracle. Since forever, the lightbulb is protected by a glass globe. Today, this disappears in favour of the light. It is the both poetic and surrealistic idea of dematerialized architectural lighting and the memory of the space occupied by the light’. DAVIDE GROPPI The visitor was invited to get lost and rediscover themseves at their stand titled ‘Labyrinth’, where the designer brand displayed several new projects. ChainDelier, a play on words, is a striking new light - a large golden chain that flexes under its own weight, a modern interpretation of the chandeliers at Versailles, drawing a perfect parabola which feeds the light mesh at the lower point. It can be composed at will, projecting the light up or down, inserting more elements, more rings, in a variety of light combinations and forms. ARTEMIDE This stand, titled “A Light Station” designed by Michele De Lucchi, invited visitors to experience light - its environmental quality, emotion and perception, interaction and interactivity. Products included Interweave by Pallavi Dean, a flexible system that integrates light and services, giving people the freedom to design their own environment. It is composed of suspended cylinders fixed to the ceiling or to the wall which guide a flexible LED light line that creates soft and unexpected geometries. In the designer’s words, ‘It is a light that celebrates connections, the intersection of countries, cultures and creativity as a unique source of energy’. DELTA LIGHT Delta Light, the Belgian brand founded by designer Paul Ameloot, inaugurated its new store in the Tortona design district in Milan, the opening coinciding with the launch of the Lighting Bible 2019, the brand’s bi-annual catalogue. The brand created the internal lighting of the Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Piazza Cordusio and offered informative onsite talks about this project.

UPCOMING TALENT

‘19

There was a strong focus on young designers with 550 designers under 35 taking part in SaloneSatellite as well as a number of other groupings. Among one of the most beautiful designs was this glass floorlamp by Maarten de Ceulaer, a young Belgian design star who studied in Eindhoven and who uses his art to stir up emotions and inspiration. The potential for Milan to make a difference was seen with VVV by Design Academy Eindhoven graduates Esther Jongsma and Sam van Gurp. Two years ago they showed a prototype at Milan - this year their modular product (pictured below) that allows you to create a wall of light was launched by French brand DCW Editions which has put it into production.

SUSTAINABILITY With concern about the environment ever present, it was no surprise that sustainability was again a major trend, underpinning many products seen at the show. At Spazio Rossana Orlandi, influential interior designer and gallerist Rossana Orlandi launched the Ro Plastic Prize in which she challenged designers to develop new ways of recycling and reusing plastic in her Ro Plastic Prize competition. Among the winners was German designer Alexander Schul, whose Substantial furniture collection – comprising a chair, a lamp (above centre) and a side table – is made entirely from recycled plastic and Reform Studio whose Plastex project (top left) is a line of colourful textiles made of reused plastic bags. The collection ExCinere – meaning ‘from the ashes’ in Latin by Dzek for Formafantasma, used volcanic ash from Italy’s Mount Etna to make beautifully tonal glazed tiles tiles (above right). Rose Lovegrove created the Ergo furniture collection (above left) for Natuzzi, using renewable and recyclable materials. ‘I don’t design

furniture very often and I’m not interested in just doing another L-shaped sofa,’ he explained at the launch. ‘I wanted to come in and try to facilitate a change in mindset. Natuzzi is a big company with young blood and they are open to doing things differently.’ Lovegrove spent three months researching materials. The frames for the furniture use wood from FSC-certified plantations that is slotted together to prevent the need for additional metal fixings. Adhesives used are water-based and formaldehyde free, and the surfaces are finished with a natural wax. All of the upholstery is produced using organic textiles, including linen, wool and cotton. The mattress for the bed is made from 100 per cent natural latex and is upholstered in a hemp fibre. Also included in the collection is a chandelier featuring LED light sources with adjustable colour temperatures which can be throughout the day to match the user’s circadian rhythm.

Three village houses, three very different homes. Over the page a small house has been cleverly expanded to create a fabulous living space for its owners and their two wildcats. On page 044, a property that had been split in two has been lovingly restored to be one amazing house. And finally, on page 054, a childhood home that was demolished to make way for something altogether more modern 033

Living space: the extension allowed for the creation of a spacious open-plan living area, the colour and texture of the old stone walls, although outside, adding texture and visual interest. They also work well as a contrast to industrial elements such as the exposed concrete ceiling and airconditioning duct. t’s not often a house is designed around a pair of wildcats, but this is certainly the story of this home. The design is made to suit not just its human residents Martin Przepiorka and Darren Darmanin, but also their two wildcats, Vladimir, an African serval, and Savvy, a serval and domestic cat mix. ‘Always, the first consideration was whether it was catfriendly,’ says Martin. ‘The whole concept, from the beginning, was for the cats to roam freely around the house - we’ve also incorporated hiding spaces for them, and had shelves made for them to jump on. It’s also why we’ve used a lot of natural materials, such as stone and wood.’ More complicated was incorporating the legal requirements that the house be the equivalent of a cage to house the cats, in particular Vladmir who is a pure bred. ‘Legally, we are living in a cage - all the walls are over 2.5m high and have safety nets all around, we have metal frames and mesh internal doors, an outdoor area with shade which resembles in some way their natural habitat, a double door system, plenty of water for hot days and plenty of plants they can eat and nibble throughout the day,’ says Martin.

MAS

Top, Cosy corner: perfect for the cats to leap onto, the metal shelving is teamed with a vintage table for an interesting and eclectic look Left, Downstairs bathroom: adjacent to the reading area, immediately after the entrance hall, this stylish bathroom is neatly concealed behind an abstract wall fresco painted by Martin 037

However, Martin and Darren also wanted a home that was right for them. When they bought the two-storey house in Qormi three years ago, it was a series of small and rather dark rooms and the couple were clear they wanted a modern house that incorporated features such as a library, walk-in wardrobe and gym, as well as space for them and for guests. Tasked with meeting all these requirements was architect Melissa Giordimaina of MMK Studio. ‘It was a demanding brief as the space was quite tight especially when considering the need for a guest bedroom and bathroom, and the pool,’ says Melissa. She made it work by extending the house to create a large open-plan ground floor space that contains a library corner, complete with an armchair for reading, along with the living room and kitchen. This overlooks the outdoor area that wraps around the side and back of the house.

‘The whole concept, from the beginning, was for the cats to roam freely around the house’

Above left: Vladimir on the terrace that’s outside the dining and kitchen area of the house Above right: the pool abuts the house - the extra metres gained by doing this was the only way to fit in the pool. It has a shallow step so the wildcats can enjoy the water and Darren made a small solar powered water fountain to keep the water fresh during summer days Adjacent page, Kitchen: Darren’s father built the kitchen. ‘This space was so important for us, we didn’t want to just order it from somewhere,’ says Martin.’ We knew that the project was going to be very challenging especially floating cabinets, but Darren’s dad is a perfectionist and we absolutely trusted him’. Below, the worktop of the kitchen island is made from Cardoso marble and incorporates an induction hob and a breakfast bar Adjacent page, Outside staircase: to roof level, it is made-to-measure in sprayed steel. ‘We kept it as transparent as possible so that it didn’t block light into the house,’ says Melissa. ‘And as it is visible from inside the house we had to make sure it looked pleasant and not merely utilitarian’ 039

House 1.indd 39

HW SPACES

‘Also on this ground floor is a bathroom, hidden behind a seamless door, and beyond it the guest bedroom. Upstairs are the private spaces. ‘We went beyond the Maltese way of wanting every room to be large,’ says Melissa. ‘We had to compromise on the size of the rooms to fit everything in, but there was enough for what was needed. Above the kitchen is a double height void that takes space from the main bedroom, but the room is still large enough, and the double volume makes an enormous difference to the feel of the kitchen’. Outside, Melissa took from the existing large garden and thought outside the box, cantilevering the terrace off the dining room, which overhangs the pool. ‘The clients were open to the suggestion that the pool touch the house - it was the only way I could fit it in as well as the rooms they wanted,’ she says. Inside, the decor is a merging of styles. ‘At first we thought to have a Spanish villa style with shutters but Melissa convinced us to go modern,’ says Martin, who studied interior design and relished the chance to flex his design muscles. Taking this as a starting point, they were inspired by the New York loft look which can be seen in the exposed beams and air-conditioning duct, which fits well with the metal mesh doors and concrete ceiling. A metal staircase, seen from the inside, leads to the roof which is in the process of being transformed into a garden.

Bedroom: the double height space ate into the size of the bedroom but it is still a large and comfortable room, natural materials and a monochrome colour palette creating a tranquil feel

The house is very much a mix of old and new - the old stone walls give character and a sense of the past but are lifted into modernity by contemporary fittings but with selected vintage items helping to bridge the eras. Art also plays a major role with the walls filled with mostly Martin’s art works. It’s one of many personal touches in the house as Darren’s father built their kitchen. ‘We quite often designed and created some of the interior and exterior elements with our hands, for example the concrete sink in the bathroom, a stone fountain with fresh water for the cats in the garden and some of the light features,’ says Martin. ‘That’s why this space is so personal and we are so proud of it, this is truly our home’. For Melissa, the charm of the house is its unexpectedness. ‘It’s down a tiny alley with a humble entrance - you wouldn’t expect there to be such a contemporary house behind it,’ she says. ‘It’s my favourite place in the world,’ continues Martin. ‘After a hectic day, it’s an oasis of quiet and green, the perfect place to relax with a glass of wine’. And as for the cats, they think it’s purr-fect.

Above left and right: the walk-in dressing room and bathroom are one room on the other side of a wall to the bedroom. The storage shelves were made bespoke by a local metal worker Left: a wooden sculpture of a horse, circa 1900s, combined with the exterior metal staircase create a striking visual vignette 042

t the heart of this home is a delightfully tranquil courtyard that artfully combines the old with the new. Surrounded on all four sides by the old stone walls of the 200-year-old house, teak decking gives a real sense of warmth. A round dining table, perfect for entertaining, is carefully positioned by the kitchen and there is seating made for relaxed lounging. Scattered throughout are decorative objects which, with the pond and its multi-coloured fish, along with the use of teak, reflect the homeowner’s love of Eastern philosophy, and in particular Japan. The courtyard, however, is just one of many outstanding features of this beautiful home. Split in two some 60 years ago, the homeowner has reunited both halves of the building to restore it to its former grandeur. He actually bought one half of the building first but, he says, ‘when I did realise that I just had one half, I wanted to buy the other to make the house whole again, to bring it back to its original form.’ This he did four years ago and for the next two years devoted himself to its rejuvenation, fusing the history of the building with the present. ‘It was a challenge to take something that was built 200 years ago and maintain its authenticity whilst at the same time tweaking and twisting the design to give it a modern twist,’ he says. The end result, he continues, is ‘19th century baroque meets Japanese spa’. The transformation was an organic process. ‘I surrounded myself with people whose opinions I valued such as [interior architect] Maria Mercieca who played a pivotal role in the early part of the process,’ he says. ‘We brainstormed ideas, vision and perspectives, and I researched a lot of ideas and then brought it all together’.

The end result is an expansive, light-filled and airy home with real character. ‘The way I work is to look at each space through its energy - how it makes me feel and what I need to do to make it feel good, whether that be changing a wall or changing the flooring. In everything, I am guided by my senses,’ says the homeowner. ‘Each section of the house competes to have a pull on me - where I spend my time depends on how I feel at the time; do I want to be in a space that is calming, or one that is stimulating, that makes me feel that I want to explore the world. To me one room is as exciting as the other.’ This is reflected in the decor which is an eclectic mix of styles and eras. ‘It’s a balance of the finer things with simple things and those that inspire emotion,’ he says. ‘As well, at times I felt it was right to go with the simplicity of the house although that may not be my natural style.’ In this he had help from interior designer Eti Arzoan who chose all the colour schemes, fabrics, furniture and accessories. ‘Her very intuitive eye really enabled the place to reach its full potential,’ he says. Natural materials are dominant. A rare and particularly beautiful marble that came with the house was used on the floor of the kitchen while elsewhere it is travertine, the smoothness providing a contrast to the texture of the original stone walls. Added to this is polished walnut which, like the teak, warms the stone. This page, Eating out: Floor-to-ceiling glass pulls back to open the kitchen to the courtyard, allowing those in the kitchen to be connected to those seated outside Adjacent page, Courtyard features: with teak flooring, a pond, plenty of greenery and interesting decorative pieces, this central outside space has a wonderful Zen feel 049

Merging the inside with the outside was a major focus. ‘I want people to move between the two without even realising it,’ he says. To create this illusion, glass floor-to-ceiling doors that can be folded back entirely to open the interior out to the exterior are used to connect the house to the courtyard. However, instead of choosing similar flooring between the two spaces, he took inspiration from Japan, opting for teak for the decking. ‘For me, it is a defining feature that gives a sense of warmth to the space,’ he says. Water and greenery soften the outside space and play to the senses. As well as the pond, there is also a pool. ‘I love the way the water reflects on the walls,’ he says. And at night, with the courtyard lit, the sound of trickling water fills the air for a magical feel.

Top, Upstairs corridor: the house is palatial inside and there is as much room upstairs and downstairs. The enormous windows - an average-sized adult could stand in them - allow light to pour in Above left, Master bathroom: a beautifully simple room, a marble floor is complemented by a free-standing bath and above, a trio of pendant lights are a lovely finishing touch Above, Main bedroom: an enormous room, the wallpaper on one wall along with a plush fitted carpet adds warmth and a sense of comfort

he property standing on this site may have been her childhood home, but the owner of this house was happy to see it go. ‘There was some sadness but I was mostly looking forward to seeing a new, modern home built in its place,’ she says. ‘I like modern, I feel more comfortable with it.’ This house has the same footprint as the previous one and while the street-facing facade has been kept, the two-storey home now very much suits a family with three boisterous boys, the design incorporating a large, open-plan living space, three bedrooms, two of which have ensuite bathrooms and an outdoor area that includes a pool. A key design feature is the double height space that flows between the dining area and the first floor. It existed in the old house ‘and it intrigued and inspired us so we included it in the new design as well,’ says architect Matthew Gauci of Flatcube Architects

The Kitchen: tall units in walnut at one end of the kitchen contain the refrigerator as well as the larder. The island is custom-made with a marble top. Simple white windows add a softness to the kitchen as well as screen the floor-to-ceiling sliding doors Common area and staicase: timber cladding conceals a service shaft and small box room which was as a consequence of the owners wanting an additional bathroom on the first floor. It also provides another visual link, leading one upstairs. ‘Given the close proximity of each section in the kitchen, living and dining area, the use of the same timber and marble tones was vital to create one large open space and not detract by simply adding another material,’ says Matthew

who was responsible for the project. As well as giving a sense of space ‘it also means that it is possible to have a connection from the ground floor to the first floor which is useful when you have three boys!’ he continues. The homeowner wanted to have an indoor/outdoor living feel and so the inside leads directly out into the exterior space, the colour of the flooring both inside and outside similar in style and colour for an almost seamless feel, especially when the floor-toceiling sliding doors are open. Inside, while the floor is of pale Carrara marble, the other materials are dark with charcoal grey marble teamed with walnut. ‘The homeowner wanted dark colours and while they can be a challenge, the design allows ample natural light so they work well together and feel warm,’ says Matthew.

HW

Above, left: while white Carrara marble is used in the ground and first floor circulation areas, each bedroom and ensuite bathroom has different floor and wall tiles, all with a subtle marble theme. ‘In the main bedroom, the challenge was to reuse the existing furniture including a very large wardrobe,’ says Matthew. ‘In fact, it was the starting point both in planning and choice of materials and colour tones - the brown main bedroom flooring complements the timber furniture and the same tile is continued into the ensuite with two variations of the same patterned mosaic used on the wall.’ Above, Bathrooms: while the main bedroom’s ensuite bathroom has a similar colour scheme to the bedroom, pale shades are used in another bathroom. All the bathrooms have custom-made vanity units and as with the ensuite bathroom to the main bedroom, two variations of the same patterned mosaic are used on the wall

The build took three years, with planning permission taking a number of months. ‘We also decided to go into the basement to make a larger garage and that was desired by the client after the build had started,’ says Matthew. Today, the home is just as the homeowner wanted it. ‘We have more space, better views and the boys have plenty of space to play inside and outside,’ she says. ‘We all really enjoy living here.’ Exterior space: using similar colours for the inside and outside, the spaces flow into each other. The area closest to the house is planted up, for a relaxing touch of green 060

AROUND THE WORLD, SUSTAINABILITY HAS BECOME A KEY CONCEPT IN BOTH RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL ARCHITECTURE, ARCHITECTS ENCOURAGED TO CREATE BUILDINGS THAT ARE ENERGY EFFICIENT, USING PASSIVE MEASURES SUCH AS THE SITE AND ORIENTATION OF THE PROPERTY, AS WELL AS TECHNOLOGY THAT ACTIVELY REDUCES A BUILDING’S ENERGY NEEDS AND ALSO ALLOWS IT TO CAPTURE AND GENERATE ITS OWN ENERGY. top or bottom of the panel is shaded. The second component in a solar PV system is the inverter. ‘It converts the energy produced from the panels (DC or Direct Current as in batteries) to one compatible with the mains (AC or Alternating Current),’ says Robert. ‘Modern inverters makes each panel completely independent of its peers, and are typically combined with power optimizers on each panel to provide enhanced performance both in partially shaded environments as well as during cloud cover, dusk and dawn. In some cases this technology can boost annual yields by up to 20 per cent.’ Most inverters now come with WiFi connectivity and online monitoring portals as well as mobile apps that allow users to monitor how much the system is generating and receive daily alerts if something goes wrong. ‘The third and often under estimated system component is the mounting structure,’ continues Robert. ‘This is an integral part of every PV system as it has to endure the harsh effects of our climate and support the PV panels for 20 years or more. The structure needs to be made of anodized aluminium or better still, a marine grade aluminium alloy based on a silicon and magnesium composition in order to withstand corrosion. The whole of Malta is considered a coastal zone

and the use of inferior materials results in the deterioration of mounting structures. In particular one should be aware of galvanised steel metal structures which may come in contact with the aluminium frame of the PV module and result in galvanic corrosion of the PV panel. This usually promotes seepage of moisture inside the panel which would destroy the panel and void its warranty’. Finally, the design also needs to be able to withstand high winds.

SOLAR WATER HEATERS

Unlike solar PV systems, solar heating is still to become popular in Malta yet it is a highly efficient system. ‘It is the only green technology available in Malta that allows for storage of renewable heat energy at a reasonable price,’ says Ing Dr Charles Yousif from the Institute for Sustainable Energy. ‘This helps alleviate the peak load on power stations especially in the evening when everyone comes homes and switches on the power.’ The lack of take up, says Dr Yousif, is down to three factors. ‘For a number of years, inferior products were on the market but now those companies have closed and the quality of the product is high,’ he says. ‘As well, because we do not install thermal meters people do not realise just how much hot water they consume and the cost, and

Like an air conditioning unit, the Ecoforest air source heat pump sits outside an apartment or house, transferring thermal energy from outdoors to indoors. The heat pump works by absorbing heat from the air at a low temperature (it can get heat from the air even when the temperature is as low as -15° C), then transferring it into a fluid known as the refrigerant. The refrigerant then passes through a compressor where its temperature is increased, the resultant heat is then transferred to the production circuit (fan coils, under floor heating etc.) as well as in domestic hot water. Ecoforest’s heatpumps are capable of automatically reversing their cycle for cooling production.

‘Although they still have to be connected to the mains, they do not need to be supplied with any type of fuel, increasing user convenience and comfort,’ says Louise Attard from Caruana & Cini. ‘Likewise, they do not generate flames or smoke and provide a comprehensive heating system with little or no visual impact. ‘You can also control your air source heat pump from your mobile phone; in addition the pump is totally monitored by the software, and security shutdowns take place in the event of machine or external anomalies, making them very safe. ‘The noise level is also that of a common household appliance between 35 and 46dB.’

FEATURE Jes Farrugia from Solar Solutions, which has sold solar panels in Malta for the past 15 years, has installed two solar thermal systems on his roof. ‘One provides me with hot water for the bathroom, dishwasher and the other serves the bathrooms,’ he says. ‘All that was needed was to separate the hot water plumbing from both systems to be able to send the hot water where needed’ finally, until last year the grant for solar heaters was €400, but now it is €700, and with that increase we have seen an increase in the numbers of sales, although it is still very small in comparison to solar PV.’ Solar heating also works with panels, the heat collected by the panels heating up water that flows through a circuit of pipes into a copper coil into a hot water tank. Jes Farrugia from Solar Solutions has installed two solar thermal systems on his roof. ‘One provides me with hot water for the bathroom, dishwasher and the other serves the bathrooms,’ he says. ‘All that was needed was to separate the hot water plumbing from both systems to be able to send the hot water where needed’.

AIR-SOURCE HEAT PUMPS

Air-source heat pumps are the technical name of an air-conditioning unit, which sits outside an apartment or house, absorbing heat from the outside air (it can get heat from the air even when the temperature outside is as low as -15 °C) releasing it to the air inside at a higher temperature. This is possible because the heat pump employs a refrigerant which is a volatile liquid. In the heating mode, this refrigerant is compressed and passed through a very small opening (just like a spray) into the external radiator of the air-conditioner. Because it is sprayed, its temperature drops and therefore the refrigerant is able to absorb heat from the outside air. It then continues its way to the indoor radiator (also known as the fan-coil unit), where it releases this heat into the indoor space to be heated. The vapour/fluid mix then continues to the compressor and the cycle is repeated. The compressor needs electricity to run, but it should use less electrical energy than the heat it produces. Such heat pumps can be used to heat radiators and underfloor heating systems as well as give hot water depending on the purpose and the need of the user. ‘There are many different configurations of heat pump systems,

HW

depending on the use and on the available source of heat,’ says Dr Yousif. ‘For example, an air-to-air heat pump implies that the airconditioner will absorb heat from the external air and will heat up the internal air. ‘On the other hand, an air-to-water heat pump implies that the system will absorb heat from the outside air and heat water such as domestic hot water to be used for washing. ‘Other industrial versions of a heat pump could use a water heat source (such as a lake, river or sea) and transfer that heat to large hot water storage tanks within a building. This is known as a water-to-water heat pump and is popular in large buildings and hotel establishments. ‘However, the most popular air-conditioner in Malta remains the reversible-cycle air-to-air heat pump, which means that the air-conditioner can work in both ways, either to heat or to cool the building, use the outside air as a source of heat or a sink for the extra heat that is extracted from the indoor space in summer. ‘When used in the heating cycle mode, a heat pump is considered to be contributing towards the production of renewable energy as stipulated in the EU Renewable Energy Directive. This is because a substantial amount of heat is absorbed from a renewable source of energy such as the external air, the sea or from underground, while the electricity needed to drive the compressor is relatively much less than the amount of heat pumped into buildings. ‘When compared to other means of heating, heat pumps therefore cause less CO2 emissions. An added plus is that they do not generate flames or fumes, and their noise levels are relatively low. ‘Currently, the government is offering a financial grant of up to €700 on the purchase of heat pump water heaters for residential use as they are very effective in reducing carbon emissions and generating renewable energy, closely matching the performance of a solar heater.’

GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMP

This technology heats water for use in the home by pumping water through pipes in the ground, the natural heat from the soil raising the temperature of the water, which is further warmed by a heat pump. The heat pump needs electricity to run, but as with the air-source heat pump, the idea is that it uses less energy than it produces. ‘It’s very popular in Europe, but the challenge in Malta is that because we are a rocky island, the cost of installing geo-thermal beside an existing building or beneath a new one is substantial,’ says Dr Yousif. ‘New innovations are being worked on, and if successful, then the technology could work well as you would not need a deep well, it would work with a shallow geo-thermal system; up to three metres below ground would be enough.’

SOLAR SHOWER

Resembling a normal shower, the outdoor solar shower uses the ambient heat in the air to heat water to a comfortable temperature. ‘It acts like a solar panel but doesn’t need direct sunlight to warm the water, the temperature of the air is enough,’ says Antoinette Darmanin of Charles Micallef Pools. ‘It’s a great way of heating water without using energy and having to spend money to do so’. It takes about 20 minutes to heat up a tank of water and the showers come in a range of designs and are resistant to pool chemicals; some models are transportable. ‘They look good too, like a piece of furniture,’ says Antoinette. 079

SPACE TO ENTERTAIN… TODAY, SIZE PERMITTING, A HOME’S OUTDOOR AREA HAS BECOME A KEY ENTERTAINING SPACE THAT, LIKE INDOORS, ALLOWS NOT JUST FOR RELAXATION BUT ALSO DINING ALFRESCO AND RUSTLING UP A TASTY MEAL BE THAT ON A BARBECUE OR EVEN AN OUTDOOR KITCHEN. ALL THIS MEANS THAT PLANNING AN OUTDOOR SPACE HAS BECOME MORE COMPLICATED, WITH MANY MORE ELEMENTS THAT NEED TO BE CONSIDERED. ELIZA COSTABEL OF THE GARDEN STUDIO CONSIDERS THE OPTIONS…

DESIGNS THAT WORK When thinking about how to design your outdoor space, keep these ideas in mind. •

Curved lines make small spaces look larger and provide a sense of progression and discovery, giving the impression of a bigger garden.

Blurring the boundaries of your space with trees and bushes will increase the perception of depth.

Consider variation in rhythm - combining tall and low plants, and rounded foliage in contrast to elongated architectural ones.

Don’t design your garden on impulse based on blooming plants you may see at your garden centre during spring time as you will end up with a barren space once the flowering season is over. Instead, plan your space by layering perennials to provide structure and year-round greenery and then add touches of seasonal vegetation to provide further colour and interest to your garden.

Use the appropriate scale of garden features so as not to overwhelm the overall design whether it is a shading structure, a water feature or a tree. Also be mindful of the final growth size when it comes to plants.

Before you begin As with any large project, it pays to have an idea of what you would like before you start. In the case of an outdoor space, begin with a checklist of how you want to use the space and then place the individual items in order of priority in case either size or budget does not allow you to implement everything on your list. One of the key first decisions is deciding on the style you want - do you want to follow your personality, the architectural style of your house or your interior décor. This decision will help you narrow down your plant and furnishing options by choosing one cohesive style that will carry throughout harmoniously. Next, establish how much time you will realistically have to spend in your outdoor space and to maintain your garden as this is very important in determining the type of materials, decor and plants to select as well as the investment that is worth putting in. There is no point choosing furniture and plants that are highmaintenance if you do not have the time or inclination to give them the time that is needed to keep them looking their best. Make a rough plan of your outdoor space and observe which parts are exposed to the sun and wind and which receive shade these factors will determine ideal vegetation and the practical uses of the space.

Depending on the size and layout of your outdoor space, think about what activities you can accommodate and create zones to separate the various uses. Planning your space When determining how to create your outdoor area, start by dividing your outdoor space into areas for dining or entertainment, along with a secluded space for relaxation as well as areas to enjoy the shade and others to soak up the sun. If you have pets or children, designate a specific low maintenance area for them. With the dining area, take into account the circulation space around dining tables and seating - be realistic about the numbers of people you can comfortably fit in your garden. Place your outdoor cooking area in a location close enough to your indoor kitchen for ease when carrying things in and out, but also in a spot with good ventilation. Don’t forget access to power and water. If you need to pass through your house to access your outdoor space, when buying large items such as furniture and tree pots factor in how you’re going to get them through the house and into the garden. Finally, make sure you position water features and pools away

throughout and avoiding areas of intense lighting and areas of complete darkness.

Make shade Shade is crucial if you are to enjoy your garden during the hotter months, and over a dining area, also helps define the space. ‘Shading is generally not given enough importance at planning stage but installing a pergola can make a space more functional as well as offering protection from the elements,’ says Mario Camilleri from Adore More. Shade also helps with insulation. ‘A lack of shading allows the sun rays to heat up glass, brick walls and any other part of the building, and therefore reduces significantly the insulation performance of the building,’ says Mario. As well as pergolas and gazebos with growing vines, retractable awnings and umbrellas will all shelter you and your guests from harsh sunlight and light rain while creating intimacy. Awnings now come with a retractable fabric system and, adds Mario, ‘we are introducing a system with operable louvers [ones that tilt, open and close] as well as retractable glass roof systems’. Can they work on homes exposed to strong winds? ‘They’re generally strong enough for windy areas, but what’s most important is that the user is aware of the elements and takes preventative measures,’ says Mario. ‘So if, for instance, strong winds are expected, the awning should be retracted to reduce the stress on the structure. Owners can opt to have a sensor installed which will give a warning when the wind gets too strong and the awning should be retracted’.

Lighting No outdoor space is complete without good lighting which allows the garden to successfully go from day to night. There are three key issues when considering outdoor lighting safety (walkways and steps), dining and entertaining at night, and the atmosphere you wish to achieve. Determine which of these requires more or less light and plan for a combination of multiple outdoor fittings to avoid too much brightness in a single area or a flat lighting scheme with the same intensity throughout. Avoid placing light fittings only on the perimeter walls of your outdoor space as you will achieve a very flat scheme with no accent on any specific feature. Accent lights are usually used to highlight trees, decorative features or other interesting elements in your outdoor space. It is also important to light up only the important features and to space out all lighting elements, creating a pleasant sequence of lighting

Professional lighting designer, Petra Cutajar from Light Design Solutions, says that the most common mistake made with exterior lighting is ‘using lamps with different colour temperatures, so some are warmer and some cooler, in the same area’. She adds that, ‘they recommend using lamps of 3000K since it is more clear in appearance but still a warm light.’ The latest innovations in outdoor lighting include wireless exterior lights. ‘These are a very practical solution in places where no plugs or wiring can be passed,’ says Petra. ‘These fittings use batteries to function - usually rechargeable or solar powered and are very useful particularly in retrofits’. The IP rating system defines how well protected lighting is from dust, water and other objects. When choosing, look for IP65 to IP67 for outdoor use; IP68 is rated for underwater use. As for all outdoor items, investing in good quality fittings is paramount in avoiding spending money every season to replace rusty or faulty fittings. According to Petra, to avoid corrosion on the fitting and compromising its electrical function, the best material for outdoor use is ‘electro-polished 316L marine grade stainless steel’. Choosing your decor Design your outdoor space as an extension of your indoors but be ready to invest in quality if you want your garden furniture to last more than a season - with exterior pieces, you really do get what you pay for. 083

Sofa Dunes Rattan With Pillows Flamant

I suggest not buying furniture in sets - for example seating and dining that look the same, especially if they will be placed next to each other. Instead, vary style and material to give a unique and informal look. Other than style, base your decisions on exposure to the weather, the amount of space you have and where you will place the items - on grass, on a wooded deck or paved floor, within a verandah or out in the open garden - and keep in mind maintenance. Wicker and wood furniture have a natural timeless look but must be placed either in an area sheltered from the elements (in the case of wicker and rattan) or need regular care (in the case of wood) unless you accept the natural beauty of greyed wood. Look for denser woods as they are the most weather and insect resistant. As for woven wicker or rattan, think of covering them during the night to avoid dust build-up in the weave. Aluminium and polypropylene furniture is usually lightweight, durable and practically maintenance free as long as it is made of good quality materials and has UV-stabilised pigments and powder coating. Do decorate your outdoor space with a variety of throw pillows, lanterns, pots and informal seating such as poufs and loungers. A rug made for the outdoors will anchor your seating composition and make it indeed feel like an outdoor living room. Care for your outdoor furniture so it can last for years and store it or cover it during the off season. Aluminium and plastic-derived furniture simply need an occasional wiping with a non- abrasive cleaner to avoid discolouration. Wicker furniture can be vacuumed and scrubbed with a mild soap and left to air dry. Wood furniture needs a natural sealant to nourish it and preserve its beauty.

‘In terms of practicality, experience has taught us that mosaic is the best’ Charles Micallef Swimming Pools

Choosing a swimming pool If you are thinking of adding a pool to your outdoor space, doing your homework and having clear ideas of what you want and need are both extremely important. There are many things that need to be taken into consideration before building a pool and you will first need to establish a budget, find out about the different types of pools and surfacing materials and then decide what will work best for your space. ‘A pool, just like when buying a new car, comes with several

options that can affect the overall price,’ explains Lee Darmanin of Charles Micallef Swimming Pools. ‘All these options, in one way or another, can make a pool more or less economical, more automated and/or easy to maintain. Finishing materials are also an important factor in the final price tag and this area offers a wide range of choice in types, styles and of course, prices’. Mosaic, paint and liner are the most commonly used surfacing materials in pools. ‘In terms of practicality, experience has taught us that mosaic is the best - glass tiles last ages and can withstand exposure to harsh chemicals much better than the other alternatives,’ says Lee. ‘Liners tend to stain and paint needs to be re-done every one to two summers’. While chlorine was once the norm for swimming pools, times are changing. ‘Pools with saltwater chlorinators are starting to become the standard all over the world,’ says Lee. ‘With one of these small units installed away from sight inside the pump room, maintenance is drastically reduced. Automated chlorine production and dosage, and not needing to handle dangerous chemicals, offer users ultimate peace of mind, safety and consistently crystal clear and sanitised pool water’.

‘Outdoor areas with high traffic or which are difficult to maintain are the best suited for composite decking.’M Demajo Timber

Ground cover Choosing a paving material, especially around a pool, should not be just a matter of aesthetics or budget - there are other issues to be considered when making the right choice. Firstly, the material must be suitable for outdoor use, therefore one that does not become slippery when wet and in Malta’s hot weather, one that does not heat up too much in the summer sun. And when installed close to a body of water, it should be resistant to chemicals, algae and mould. Composite decking, a material made of wood fibres, plastics and bonding agents, has become popular in recent years for its durable properties and easy maintenance. ‘Outdoor areas with high traffic or which are difficult to maintain are the best suited for composite decking,’ says Alex Sant Fournier of M Demajo Timber. ‘It is almost maintenance free when compared to real wood but it heats up more than wood and it also tends to be more expensive than its natural counterpart’. While composite decking also lends itself better for areas without complicated angles and edges, ‘for step edges,’ continues Alex, ‘ a solid wood is always better since it is a stronger material as the edge of a step is usually the area which tends to get worn out faster and a solid material will withstand more wear and tear and last longer’. When it comes to natural timber, what is the best wood to use for decking and how should it be maintained? ‘Ipe and teak are the best woods for outdoor decking as they are naturally oily woods,’ says Alex. ‘ All wood will dry out if exposed to the sun and rain so light sanding and re-oiling is important and should be carried out at least once a year, ideally before the summer sun and heat.’

CHAR-GRILLED SPATCHCOCK

WITH LEMON THYME AND HONEY Serves 4

An impressive looking dish on the grill, it’s a great choice when entertaining INGREDIENTS 1 4 30g 30ml

small chicken springs lemon thyme honey olive oil

Seasoning to taste Grilled seasonal vegetables as a side dish METHOD Spatchcock the chicken or ask the butcher to do it for you. Mix together the lemon thyme, olive oil, honey and seasoning and then rub the chicken all over with it. Leave for at least half an hour. Heat the barbecue, then grill the chicken for five minutes each side (start on the top for a great grilled look). Allow to rest for five minutes - this will ensure a juicy chicken. Serve with grilled vegetables and a mayo-based potato salad.

GEORGES’ FAVOURITE

Wine Pairings

Whether white, pink or red, wines fit for barbecue fare need to be versatile. Here are three favourites that go well with both main dishes, and the Ġellewża Frizzante even nails it served with dessert.

2018 MEDINA GELLEWZA, I.G.T. MALTESE ISLANDS This local red goes best with the flat-grilled chicken but can also bring out the spice of the Thai-infused snapper. I know: the inclination is to pick stronger more assertive wines with punch to push through grilled meat. Tannic, full-bodied reds seem the natural choice. Yet, this unwooded, featherweight one is the better BBQ choice. Served slightly chilled, it leaves you feeling lighter than the big bruisers of bottles.

2017 GRAND VIN DE HAUTEVILLE CHARDONNAY, SUPERIOR, D.O.K. MALTA Many wines are too delicate to cope with taxing marinades which can leave many a wine for dead. But Delicata’s premium, oaky and creamy Chardonnay works wonders. The advantage is that this big white has bags of fruity goodness, a hint of sweetness and great depth. This first-in-class Chardonnay of Malta delivers all the right lip-smacking goodness, whether enjoyed with fish or white meat.

N.V. GELLEWZA FRIZZANTE, I.G.T. MALTESE ISLANDS A barbecue wine’s main purpose is to refresh. There are ample fresh whites and rosés which can be served and have enough forward fruitiness so that they can be enjoyed throughout the entire meal. But few are as versatile as Delicata’s pink, sparkling gellewza Frizzante. It marries well with the snapper and the poultry, and even enhances dessert. Can you taste how it makes the sweet nutty-coconut flavours pop? 111

FRENCH|FLAIR

THE TERRIBLE FIRE THAT RAVAGED NOTRE DAME TURNED A SPOTLIGHT ON FRANCE'S HISTORIC BUILDINGS. HOWEVER, AS CHRIS BEANLAND WRITES, IT IS ALSO MEMORABLE FOR ITS MODERN AND EXPERIMENTAL ARCHITECTURE

I

n France architecture and design is not just a case of bricks and mortar – it is given cultural significance by the state and society. Paris' buildings are put on a pedestal – and no visit to the city by the Seine is complete without drinking in their exotic flavours and feeling the woozy effects that you get from being around the works of some of the world's great architects. Le Corbusier (even though he was Swiss) adopted France as his home and his apartment in the 16th arrondissement has been freshly restored on the anniversary of the 50th birthday of the Fondation Le Corbusier. From 1934 to 1965, he and his wife, Yvonne Gallis, sipped absinthe and frolicked naked (Corb loved nudism) in the studioapartment in the Immeuble Molitor, a complex of 15 apartments which was a co-design with his cousin Pierre Jeanneret. Now considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is one of the most important sites of a Corbusier pilgrimage to Paris and is now looking as beautiful as it did back in its heyday. The large windows in particular make it look starkly ahead of its time. The same can be said for Corbusier's Villa Savoye in Poissy, just a short RER tide from central Paris. The archly minimalist, rigorously rectilinear house seems to float not just above the ground but above the age. In 1931 this was as imaginative and futuristic as architects had got and admiring its pure white walls from the garden raises your heartbeat. But back near to the Porte Molitor there is more interest. The Piscine Molitor has also been recently refurbished and is now part of the Sofitel/M Gallery branded Hotel Molitor. Its revolutionary al fresco pool was where the singers, dancers, prancers and chancers of the jazz age took the plunge into perfect waters. It stood idle and ruined for many years until its recent rescue and resuscitation. Designed by Lucien Pollet in 1929, its typically art

deco lines evoked ocean liners and luxury, freshness and health and decadence – the bikini was debuted here in 1946 and the world never looked back. Throughout the 20th Century Paris experimented on an almost unimaginable scale – and allowed architects total free rein. The end results are often overwhelming. Take Ivry Sur Seine in the 13th arrondissement. This almost impossible to believe collection of gutsy brutalist behemoths came into being thanks to the efforts of Renée Gailhoustet and Jean Reanaudie. From above, the 1970s housing blocks resemble interlocking stars. The buildings leap over roads and include walkways and stairs and balconies, crazy angles and mad changes in levels. It is a thrill ride. Other so-called 'banlieues' or suburbs are also totally mesmerising, such as Créteil with its futuristic university and 'Choux' – 'the cabbages of Créteil', attractive apartment blocks with buff balconies. These days police speed along the pathways between the buildings on motorbikes and the air rings with West African music and French spoken in marvellously wonky accents.

And at Noisy-Le-Grand there are more examples of architecture on steroids such as The Arenas de Picasso, a huge circular eye-shaped block by Manuel Nunez Yakowsy from 1985 which stares down at you like something from a sci-fi film. A short stroll across Noisy is the Espaces d'Abraxas which actually did feature in a film – 'Hunger Games' fans will instantly recognise this post-modern curving courtyard by Ricardo Bofill from the early 1980s. It also appeared in the movie 'Brazil'. The pediments and shocking claustrophobia of the complex lend it a truly otherworldy air. Experimentation in Parisian architecture was wild – and encouraged at every level. The Pompidou Centre is one of the city's biggest tourist attractions and has been since its opening in the 1970s. The 'inside out' model of putting all the pipes, pillars and services on the exterior was a reaction to the Archigram 'Plug In City' theory and was the first time Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano had pulled the trick off. In the mix with 680 entries in an open competition, they must have been as surprised as the Parisian public when their untested design was judged the winner of a competition that architects from around the world had entered. Riding the escalators up to the top of the building has become a rite of passage in the city. Even bigger in scale and from the same era, La Defense aimed to create a whole new city district out to the west to house offices and workers. The windswept squares and clusters of skyscrapers (Paris has few of these in its centre) give it a certain je ne sais quois – and it has its monument, the Grande Arche de la Defense, a square edifice with a viewing platform up top. In recent years Paris has not let up. Frank Gehry's Fondation Louis Vuitton brings the Canadian's trademark fishy feel to architecture with abstract shapes and high value materials housing collections of artists such as Andy Warhol and Takashi Murakami as well as emerging artists, especially from Africa and Asia. Like the Pomidou, it's a become a love or hate building - see it and make up your own mind.
