editor’s letter HW50

Happy 50th Birthday HOMEWORKS! It’s with an enormous sense of pride that I am able to write this. Having started working on the second issue of HOMEWORKS back in 2003, I feel so fortunate and grateful that I still enjoy working on the publication as much as I did when writing my first contribution. There’s no doubt that this is a shared mindset amongst the HOMEWORKS team, which I believe results in the collective effort to create a magazine that continually strives to bring its readers inspiration, improvement and style. This issue is an appreciation of special living, dining, eating, sleeping, bathing and spaces in between from issues 26-49 (2007-2011). We hope you enjoy the retrospective and look forward to bringing you all new homes and features for issue 51.

Thank you for reading!

HOMEWORKS is published by writeon ltd. every two months on Sundays with an audited circulation of 40,000 copies distributed with The Sunday Times of Malta.

HW50 READERS RESPONSE

YOUR FEEDBACK Issue 49

winner

Gillian Mahoney is the winner of the two-burner stainless steel gas barbeque worth €125, courtesy of Zahra Enterprises GILLIAN MAHONEY: “Thank you all for publishing a magazine that is consistently of a high calibre and of great interest and help to many. All your efforts as a team shine through with every issue, which oozes style. Having just purchased a penthouse overlooking a valley in Zebbug, and being a first time buyer, I feel there is a lack of information available on planning for home improvements. I’d like to know what considerations should be made when planning, the professional people to contact, authority permits to obtain, and planning sequence suggestions. Further to this, space is limited and has become a luxury in today’s search for property. Rooms are being built smaller and more compact, necessitating a different outlook, which focuses on practicality. So I’d like to see editorial on clever ideas for storage (anything from kitchen to bedroom to bathrooms), on creating a feature out of storage units, cupboards etc., on maximizing corridor space, on reaching a balance between hoarding vs. clearing. I also think it would be helpful to see something on planning empty rooms with regards to furniture, sockets layout, electricity, plumbing, television and other.”

Other Readers wrote:

NEEDS YOU! Readers are invited to submit interesting photographs and a brief description of their homes, which may be distinct in their architectural design. Of particular interest are homes that offer outstanding elements of both interior and exterior living spaces. HOMEWORKS will select the best submissions for future features. Send a photo and information for the attention of: The Editor, Writeon Ltd., Airways House, Level 5, HIgh Street, Sliema SLM 1551 or info@writeon.com.mt (photos will not be returned)

JOHN CALLEJA “I am a pensioner and live by myself and so I have to deal with all household necessities. I always follow HOMEWORKS with interest. It is very comprehensive and helpful. Often problems crop up. For example, the fridge or the cooker stops functioning, mould appears on the wall, windows leak, a fuse on the ‘salva vita’ blows up and similar problems that disrupt your daily routine, especially if like me, you are no good at doing handyman jobs. May I suggest that you publish information about these every day problems and how to deal with them. It would be a great help.” Noelle Darmanin “We started collecting HOMEWORKS about six months ago, as we are in the process of purchasing our first house. Unfortunately we do not have any knowledge whatsoever in construction work or professional home design, which is why I find HOMEWORKS an inspiration to come up with new ideas. I would like to see a page on “Top 5 Tools”, which are must-haves for DIY home improvement. I’d also like to see a page on “Top 10 Home Gadgets”, as well as an article explaining some guidelines on how to have an energy efficient household. We all know the new housing regulation, which encourages us to have an energy efficient certificate based on the rating of the house. The question is, how can we improve our energy house rating and how can I plan these upgrades now that I am about to start refurbishing my home?”

We want your feedback. Forward your ideas outlining what you would like to see published in HOMEWORKS. Send your ideas to: HOMEWORKS Feedback, Level 5, Airways House, High Street, Sliema SLM 1551 or email: info@writeon.com.mt

Every issue of HOMEWORKS brings readers three homes, each distinct in their architectural style, design and character. COMING THIS AUTUMN

THE BOOK A snapshot of contemporary Design & Architecture in Malta from 2003 to 2011

True to HOMEWORKS magazine’s quality conscious design and contents, the new HOMEWORKS book is over 300 magnificently designed pages of contemporary homes in Malta and Gozo. Also true to the magazine’s purpose of bringing readers inspiration, innovation and style, the book is a synthesis of highlights throughout the first 50 issues of HOMEWORKS magazine, featuring a true diversity of contemporary spaces, all distinct for their style and architectural dexterity. An accurate reflection of true Maltese contemporary living, this is a collection of homes that can only exist in the here-and-now: at a time when design and style has gone through the metamorphosis of traditional classical to distinctively modern. As a result, the book is truly a snapshot of contemporary design in Malta from 2003 to 2011. Each section encompasses a specific area of the home, with a full portfolio of different styles and ideas. Well over 100 different spaces appear throughout the book, designed by Malta and Gozo’s top architects and designers, skilfully photographed by Malta’s leading photographers. From apartments to villas, maisonettes to duplexes, the classical style of the traditional romantics to ultra minimalist conversions of modern loyalists, each home featured in the HOMEWORKS book is for its quality, originality and character. The new HOMEWORKS book will be available at leading bookshops this autumn.

BEST OF LIVING TODAY’S LIVING ROOM

f recent years, the living room has become a lot less compartmentalised. Previously, it was not uncommon for people to have two living rooms – one for guests, the other for the family. It meant smaller, divided spaces and a more formal way of entertaining. With space becoming such a commodity, an open plan living/dining/kitchen area has become the norm, which affects the way people entertain, which in turn, influences the other rooms in the home. Different areas of the open plan are determined through subtle divisions, such as different flooring, distinct lighting and ceiling heights

BEST OF DINING TODAY’S DINING ROOM

n the past, there was a great formality to Maltese dining rooms. The tendency was to blatantly section them off from all other rooms. They were often dark and non-compromising in terms of veering from the standard form and function. Nowadays, dining rooms have become what the homeowner wants them to be according to their specific needs. Open plan dining/living and kitchen areas have become prevalent in a short amount of time, due to their functional practicality. As a result, entertainment dining has become a lot less formal in its approach

I

BEST OF KITCHENS TODAY’S KITCHEN

s a result of the rise of open plan living, the goal of the kitchen’s aesthetics has changed. It’s now about keeping the space clutter-free and concealing the unsightly items in unobtrusive panelled storage areas. Kitchen islands have become more of the norm than the exception and hints of glamour are being brought in by cleverly planned lighting design. Since it is now accepted that guests can stay in the kitchen while the host prepares, seating areas in the kitchen have become commonplace

Once we had a little room where children never played... Until one day, the walls became green. And in came a little boy and his sister. Who could never agree. ‘It’s a jungle,’ he’d say. ‘Unicorn forest,’ said she. Train station! Elf castle! At least now there’s one thing they agree on. Which room is their favourite.

Today’s bathroom is about creating a private retreat in the home in order to replenish the senses from life’s fast paced stress.
