MIKE HIGGINBOTHAM LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Higginbotham originally served on the Library Board of Trustees from 2009-2016, including as Board Chair from 2013-2015. He left the Library Board in 2016 to serve on the Homewood City Council from2016-2020.
“I am elated to be returning the Library Board. I think good libraries are places that help us journey into our world with awe and mission. The Homewood Public Library may have a list of objects you can borrow, but what it is actually circulating is dreams. Maybe you’ll use a telescope to visit the heavens or a guitar to articulate what your own clumsy words cannot or maybe you’ll just steam clean Rover’s stains off the carpet to enhance your home. And books – well, the fact I can suddenly feel the melancholy of a stranger who wrote a sonnet centuries ago is, no question, a special sort of magic. Your encounter with our Library will change you and our community. Who wouldn’t want to be part of that?” says Higginbotham.
Mike Higginbotham Recommends: “I’ve read a lot of good books (and a few that were less so). Still, If I were to pass along a book folks *should* read, I’d go with Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. I read it 3 or so years ago – a gift from my daughter, Taylor. It is a fine piece of writing, if a challenging one. It is filled with jagged edges that cut and bleed perennial wounds that have never healed or, I think, even been properly treated. But the truth is the truth even when it makes you wince and feel an old pain in new ways. ”
