Dear Alan Gratz, Did you always want to be a writer? When did you decide to be a writer?

My original dream was to be a Jedi master. Unable to master the Force, I quickly turned to writing. When I was in grade school I produced a newspaper called the Blue Spring Lane News for my street, and by fifth grade I had written my first book. It was called Real Kids Don’t Eat Spinach, and it was a play on a popular humor book at the time called Real Men Don’t Eat Quiche. I kept writing stories and newspaper articles all through middle school and high school, and studied writing in college. I guess I should have seen this coming.

The Butler Did It is a murder mystery/comedy that parodies every English mystery play ever written….with a decidedly American flair. When they are not busy tripping over clues, they trip over each other!

Laughs collide with thrills, and the climax is a real seatgrabber as the true killer is unmasked, and almost everyone turns out to be someone else!

Document Shredding & Electronics Recycling Fri, Nov 14, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Join us in Homewood Library’s back parking lot to help the planet by shredding your documents and recycling your electronics! Gone For Good’s shredding truck will be on site to destroy your sensitive documents and files. Limit of two bags or boxes of documents per person. Paper will be shredded and boxes returned. Secure Recycling will also be on hand to take and recycle your old computers, household electronics, small appliances and other items.

Secure cell phone destruction for $5, hard drive destruction on-site for $10. Flat panel TVs will not be accepted at this time.

The award was presented during the Opening General Session of the 2025 ALA Annual Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 27, 2025. His leadership, generosity, and sincere connection to others have left a lasting mark on the Homewood Public Library—and this national recognition honors a legacy that will continue to shape the library’s future for years to come.

Over his 12-year tenure, Dr. Doran led with both heart and vision, championing key staff and service advancements including: A new paid parental leave policy Vacation benefits for part-time employees A restructured pay scale ensuring equitable compensation A state-of-the-art computer lab, named in honor of retiring Director Deborah Fout His leadership extended beyond the walls of the library: He founded the Homewood Library Foundation, which grew from just six members in 2011 to 45 members today.

He spearheaded the annual Library Block Party, a vibrant community event that in 2024 raised nearly $38,000 in just two hours.

He became the Library Board’s first and only Emeritus Trustee in 2024, a distinction created in his honor.

He continues to mentor new trustees and is currently helping guide the library’s next capital campaign—a performing arts center.
