Margarita Engle is a Cuban-American author and poet. She writes books for children, young adults, and adults. She has won a Pura Belpré Honor, an International Latino Book Award Gold Medal, and a Newbery Honor. In addition, she has also been awarded Pura Belpré Medals, Walter Honors, Américas Awards, Jane Addams Award, PEN U.S.A., and NSK Neustadt Prize. Along with numerous awards, Margarita also served as the national 2017-2019 Young People’s Poet Laureate. As a student, she studied creative writing, agronomy and botany. Her love of her culture and the colorful world around her is evident in her work. She lives in Central California with her family.
