Opportunity is Not Luck: How Successful People Position Themselves

Every morning, Lanet rises with a quiet prayer.

The mist hangs gently over the fields. The first boda bodas rumble to life. Shopkeepers sweep yesterday's dust from their doorsteps. Schoolchildren walk briskly through the chilly morning air, their dreams tucked somewhere between exercise books and borrowed hopes. Mothers prepare breakfast. Fathers leave home in search of work. And beneath all these ordinary routines lives an extraordinary companion—hope.

Hope that tomorrow will be better.

Others sharpened their trades as welders, drivers, electricians, mechanics, or caregivers.

Hope that the next phone call may carry good news.

Their journeys were not glamorous.

Hope that somewhere beyond today's struggles lies an open door.

Yet many people spend years waiting for that door to appear. They watch others pass through opportunities and quietly conclude, "They were lucky."

But was it really luck?

The truth is that opportunity behaves much like rain in our countryside.

When the clouds gather, the prepared farmer smiles while the unprepared one worries. The rain falls on both farms, but only one harvests abundantly. The difference is not the rain. The difference is preparation.

In our community, we know stories of young men and women who refused to sit idle while waiting for miracles.

Some learned computer skills in small cyber cafés. Others enrolled in short courses. Some volunteered in churches, hospitals, and community projects.

There were days of disappointment. Days when applications went unanswered. Days when they questioned themselves. Yet while others waited for opportunity to arrive fully dressed, they quietly prepared a seat for it at their table.

Years later, when a scholarship appeared, they qualified.

When an overseas recruitment opportunity emerged, they possessed the required skills.

When a business chance arose, they had already learned the trade.

What outsiders called "luck" was often preparation meeting opportunity.

This is especially important in our generation.

The world our parents knew has changed. A certificate alone is no longer enough.

Employers are increasingly looking for people who can adapt, communicate, solve problems, learn continuously, and work with others. The future belongs not merely to the educated but to the teachable.

Perhaps the opportunity you seek is not hidden in a foreign country or a distant city. Perhaps it is hidden in the skill you have delayed learning.

Perhaps it is waiting inside a book you have not opened, a course you have not taken, or a talent you have not fully developed.

But every great journey begins long before the plane takes off or the job offer arrives. It begins with preparation.

So learn something new. Build your character. Develop a skill. Expand your knowledge. Nurture your faith. Strengthen your discipline.

Plant the seed before the rain comes.

As we begin this journey together in Opportunity Corner, let us remember a simple truth: success is rarely an event.

It is usually a process.

The road from Lanet can lead to Nairobi, Melbourne, London, Doha, Toronto, or anywhere else in the world.

Sharpen the axe before the tree appears.

Light the lamp before darkness falls.

For when opportunity finally knocks—and it surely will—may it find you ready to open the door.
