When Butterflies Lie: Understanding Infatuation

Have you ever met someone and suddenly felt that the world had changed color?

Your heart races when they call. Their text message makes you smile for no reason. You begin imagining a future together before you've even learned their middle name. Food tastes better. Music sounds sweeter. Even the dusty roads of Lanet seem lined with flowers.

Then, a few months later, the magic fades.

But butterflies were never meant to carry a relationship.

What happened?

Character does.

Did love disappear?

Consider two young people in Lanet who meet and instantly become inseparable.

They spend hours talking, sharing photos, and dreaming together. Yet neither takes time to understand the other's values, habits, goals, or beliefs.

Perhaps not.

Perhaps what disappeared was infatuation.

Many people confuse infatuation with love. Yet the two are not the same.

Infatuation is intense attraction. Love is enduring commitment. Infatuation is a spark. Love is the firewood that keeps the home warm through the night.

Months later, conflicts emerge. One values honesty while the other frequently tells lies. One believes in financial responsibility while the other spends recklessly. Suddenly, the butterflies are no longer enough.

Why?

Unfortunately, today's culture often celebrates the spark while ignoring the firewood.

Because lasting relationships are built on values, not merely feelings.

Social media is full of grand gestures, romantic surprises, and carefully edited moments. Young people are told that true love should always feel exciting. If the butterflies disappear, they assume the relationship has failed.

This is where moral character becomes important. Love requires honesty. It requires faithfulness. It requires patience, humility, self-control, and respect. These virtues may not create dramatic stories, but they create strong relationships.

True commitment begins when feelings are no longer the only reason you stay.

It begins when you choose kindness during disagreement.

Attraction is important. Feelings matter.

But feelings alone cannot sustain a relationship through financial struggles, illness, disappointments, or the ordinary challenges of life.

Love is deeper than emotion.

It grows when you remain truthful even when a lie would be easier.

It matures when you respect boundaries instead of manipulating emotions.

Real love does not ask, "What can I get from this person?"

It is a decision to act with decency even when emotions fluctuate.

So when the butterflies arrive, enjoy them.

They are part of being human.

But do not let them make your decisions.

Let your values lead.

It asks, "How can I honour this person's dignity?"

Our elders often understood this wisdom. Before making lifelong commitments, they looked beyond appearance and excitement. They considered reputation, values, responsibility, and family character.

While times have changed, that lesson remains valuable.

Because butterflies may visit for a season, but character is what remains when they fly away.
