Occasionally I’ll start a negotiation by saying, “I don’t want to overpay …” Then I continue “… but I don’t want to underpay either.”

Many times when I’ve used that line, it invariably gets thrown back in my face later – at which time I say, “Gee, I’m glad you remember me saying that. It just proves nothing gets by you, so you must also have heard me say, “I don’t want to overpay either.”

I’ve had a lot of experience in this area, and I’m happy to share a few negotiations strategies and examples: Successful negotiations start with superior information. There’s a reason car dealers win in negotiations. They know exactly how much they paid for the car they’re trying to sell, and also how much your tradein is worth. Few ordinary car buyers take the time to learn those two critical numbers.

Then the dealer throws in variables like options and financing charges that help disguise the dealership’s true profit margin.

The result is that only the most sophisticated customers know how to cut a deal without cutting their own throats.

Be willing to get up from the table and say no. Years ago I acted as an agent for a first-round pro football draft choice. Two teams were vying for my client’s talent – the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League and the Baltimore Colts in the National Football League. I was in faceto-face negotiations with the owner of the Toronto team who was trying to force me to make a decision before I left and talked to Baltimore. I felt pressured, but I said no. My client ended up signing with Baltimore for more money and winning a Super Bowl.

Always let the other person speak first.

Western Union wanted to purchase the ticker invented by Thomas Edison, who was unable to name a price. Edison asked for a couple of days to consider it. His wife suggested he ask for $20,000, which seemed exorbitant to Edison. When Edison returned to the Western Union office, he was asked to name his price, but he just stood there speechless.

The Western Union official broke the silence and said, “Well, how about $100,000?”

Negotiation is not just about winning, it’s about win-win. In his book “What they Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School,” Mark McCormack explained how he tries to make negotiations a win-win for both sides so there are no hard feelings.

He wrote: “I find it helpful to try to

figure out in advance where the other person would like to end up – at what point he will do the deal and still feel like he’s coming away with something. This is different from ‘how far will he go?’ A lot of times you can push someone to the wall, and you still reach an agreement, but his resentment will come back to haunt you in a million ways.”

Agreements prevent disagreements.

Every now and then you will enter into a handshake agreement where “your word is enough.” Maybe yours is, but the other party’s usually isn’t.

I had a handshake deal with a man I hired, who agreed that he would not seek other employment for two years. After a year, a better offer came along, and he was gone.

He said he remembered our deal was for only one year. I couldn’t prove him wrong. Now when I make a deal I follow it up with an immediate letter stating our arrangement.

Discover your inner child in negotiations. Herb Cohen wrote the book that I consider the Bible of negotiations – “You Can Negotiate Anything.” I had him speak a few years ago to a group I was mentoring, and he asked, “Who are the most successful negotiators who seem to get what they want?” He replied children and listed four reasons.

First, they aim high. They understand if you expect more, you get more. Second, they recognize that “no” is a starting point and not final. Third, they form coalitions, starting with their mother. If she says no, then they move on to dad. Grandparents are next.

Finally, children are tenacious and persistent.

They wear you down.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Wine

an opportunity to show off a little. When one remembers a certain great uncle’s house, sometimes we remember their wine, due to either it’s taste, color or smell.

I remember having wine at a house, which used a recipe that allowed the stems on the wild grapes to be left on the grapes.

This created a different woody taste that I didn’t enjoy, although others liked it.

My father-in-law made grape wine using frozen grape juice. The result was a sweet grape wine that seemed to have a lower alcohol content. He changed the alcohol content by adding raisins to the batch after the brewing process was completed.

The brewing process began again, which filled the home with a wine-brewing smell.

The result was a reduction in the extra sweet taste and a higher alcohol content. I thought it tasted good.

In later years, we made something like a brandy. The following recipe is not exact, but the ingredients are correct. You start with a gallon jug. You fill ¾ of the jug with raspberries or strawberries. Add 3 cups of sugar and a quart of vodka. Screw the cap on and during the first two weeks rotate the bottle to mix the sugar each day. While sitting allow the cap to be loose, since there will be some gas created in the brewing process. After a couple of months, it is ready.

Pour the juice through a small screen to keep the remaining fruit out of the drinking glass.

The fruit is really a pleasant addition to vanilla ice cream or vanilla pudding.

This time of the year gave the rural families a chance to again create something that could have been called a hobby.

There were many duties that were required to make the farm and rural families successful, but there was a fun project that not only created a usable product, but it’s taste and quality was a source of pride for the individuals that served it. It was wine.

Wine was created from many different fruits and from many different recipes. In many cases wine was created in different forms during most of the summer. The process usually began in spring using dandelions or rhubarb. Both of these items are readily available in spring and quite easy to gather. The taste of the finished product varied from sweet to an almost dry tasting wine. The variation in taste came from the amount of sugar and the brewing process used. Homemade wine was usually stored in gallon jugs and kept in a dark area. Longer time spent in storage created a smoother taste. When my grandmother moved from her home, my uncle and I were cleaning the basement, when we found a jug of rhubarb wine placed between the floor joists. It was more than 30 years old. When we unscrewed the cap, it bubbled air pressure and wine out from under the cap. It tasted like really good champagne and helped to make the cellar cleaning job more fun.

Later in the summer there were additional wine ingredients available.

Raspberries and strawberries were used to make sweeter tasting wines. Chokecherries and beets created a wine with a more full bodied taste. Later in the summer sumac and wild grapes made wines with a “Mogen David” taste.

Wine was used as a cordial offered to house guests, a gift for a dinner hostess, a Christmas gift, a relaxing drink at the end of the day or a cure-all for any form of sinus or sore throat ailment. As a gift it was appreciated as an expression of the giver’s personal effort into the gift. When a wine had a more pleasurable taste, it gave the host

P r i v a t e Interment for Ronald Kuhlmann took place on Tuesday, May 18 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Ronald Alfred Kuhlmann, age 77 of Grey Eagle, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2021.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys; daughter, Sandy Dee; parents, August and Evelyn; aunt, Luella Stieren.

Harold F. Stangler

Harold F. Stangler, age 55 of Sauk Centre, passed away after his courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Friday, May 28 at the PattonSchad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre with Deacon Tom McFadden officiating. A private inurnment will be held at a later date.

Ron had many faithful friends he leaves behind wanting more. We loved his quiet and gentle spirit, he was filled with kindness for all. It was Ron’s wish to not have a funeral service, but he was certain about where he was going. In his notebook, he wrote: If You Confess With Your Lips, Jesus Is Lord, Believe In Your Heart, You Will Be Saved.

Rest in Peace, Ron! Minnesota. Harold worked in manufacturing for 30 years, primarily at Electrolux. His favorite thing to do was fishing and he looked forward to the weekends to enjoy his ice-cold beer. Harold loved his family and was an inspiration to all who knew him.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.

The couple moved to Sharon’s parent’s farm and eventually purchased it in 1994. Sharon primarily raised her family but wouldn’t shy away from helping on the farm. For the past few years, Sharon helped care for her three grandchildren.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Sharon enjoyed playing cards, going to the casino with her parents, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Roger Meyer of Melrose; children, Christopher (Clarissa) Meyer of Grey Eagle and Jennifer Meyer of Melrose; three grandchildren, Nolan, Maverick, and Jameson; parents, Archie and Regina Meemken of Melrose; brothers and sisters, Gene Meemken of Albany, Bernice (Dennis) Gruber of Lake Henry, Rich Meemken of Burtrum, and Marlene (Tom) Schreifels of Holdingford.

taking pictures of the beauty that surrounds us, or tanning in the sun; she had a special connection with nature.

Family was very important to Deb. She loved them all deeply and was always willing to help when she could, usually even putting others before herself. This was especially apparent after the passing of her sister Sandy, as Deb became very involved in Sandy’s children’s lives and was always so proud of them and their accomplishments too. Deb especially enjoyed and looked forward to her Dad’s fish fry’s, his rhubarb cake and his homemade dressing on holidays. For anyone who had crossed paths with Deb, the thing that allowed her to quickly make friends and keep them, was her great sense of humor. She could tell a good joke (a Hoeschen family quality) and really enjoyed being able to share a good belly laugh with family and friends. Deb, like the family members who have gone before her, is already so deeply missed and will leave in unfillable void until we see her again.

Survivors include her daughter, Mandolin Copa of Baxter; son, Matt Copa of Brainerd; father, Robert “Bob” Hoeschen of Freeport; brothers and sisters, Roxane Hoeschen of Sauk Centre, Keith Hoeschen of New Munich, and Jason (Heather) Hoeschen of Freeport; and many loving relatives and friends.

Rev. Kenneth E. Thielman

Lake, November 1965-June 1969; St. Joseph, Waite Park, June 1969-August 1980; Our Lady of Lourdes, Little Falls, August 1980-July 1990; and Christ the King, Browerville, July 6, 1990-July 1998. Father Thielman retired July 1, 1998. After retirement, he was a CentraCare volunteer, volunteering 6,960 hours.

Father Thielman was instrumental in establishing the REC (Residents Encounter Christ) program in 1992. He also served as Chaplain for REC and TEC (Together Encountering Christ) programs. Father Thielman was Chaplain for the Minnesota Correctional Facility, Sauk Centre, 1992 until 1999.

Father Thielman is survived by brothers, Lowell (Phyllis) Thielman of Avon, Brother Nicholas Thielman, C.S.C of Holy Cross Notre Dame, Indiana, and sister-in-law, Rosemary Thielman of Brooklyn Park.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Sylvester, Nestor, Howard, Gerald, and Delroy, and sisters, Lenore, Bernice, Evelyn, Virginia, and Delphine.

Memorials are preferred to Bangladesh Holy Cross Mission or CentraCare Hospice.

Debora A. “Deb” Hoeschen, age 58 of Freeport, passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, May 24 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Debora Ann Hoeschen was born June 8, 1962 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Robert and Donna (Winter) Hoeschen. Deb was a super proud mom, always talking about the latest things her kids were up to and proudly displaying plaques and certificates in their school years. She was always very supportive and did everything she could to do the best for them.

Deb had an avid affection for AC/DC and could often be found with sporting shirts, pictures, memes, and even her shoes in support of the group. Deb played guitar and began singing at a young age, even auditioning for Star Search and singing on the local holiday show Jingle Bells. Throughout her life she spent time writing poetry and songs and practicing Guns N’ Roses to keep her skills brushed up.

Deb loved spending time in nature, and always had a knack for tying things together into something good or positive, finding beauty and something meaningful in all things.

Gazing up at sunsets, swimming in the lake, Rev. Kenneth E. Thielman, age 92 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Friday, May 21, 2021, at CentraCareMelrose Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday, May 26 at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with The Most Reverend Donald J. Kettler presiding. Burial was at Saint Benedict’s Cemetery in Avon, Minnesota.

Reverend Kenneth Edmund Thielman was born on August 16, 1928, in Avon, Minnesota. He was the son of Nicholas and Frances (Wellenstein) Thielman. Father Thielman attended Avon Elementary School in Avon, Technical High School in St. Cloud, Minnesota and undergraduate studies at Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota.

He received his seminary training at Saint John’s Seminary in Collegeville. Father Thielman was ordained to the priesthood by The Most Reverend Peter W. Bartholome, at the Saint Mary’s Cathedral in St. Cloud on June 4, 1955. He celebrated his first Mass at the Church of Saint Benedict in Avon on June 5, 1955.

Father Thielman served in the following pastoral assignments in the Diocese of Saint Cloud: associate pastor, St. Joseph, Waite Park, June 1955-September 1961; pastor, St. Frederick, Verndale, September 1961-November 1965; Holy Cross, Pearl

Raymond J. “Ray” Funk

Raymond J. “Ray” Funk, age 95 of New Munich, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m.

Thursday, May 27 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Raymond John Funk was born July 23, 1925 in Freeport, Minnesota to Sebastian and Adelheid (Keppers) Funk. He was united in marriage to Florentine Zierden on August 21, 1956 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. The couple farmed south of Freeport until retiring in 1988. During retirement, they continued to help on the family farm and moved to Freeport in 2003.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich and the St. Joseph’s Men’s Society. Ray’s joy in life was his family and farming. He lovingly raised nine children. He enjoyed taking his children to the Dairy Queen and then for a

Ralph Bernard Borgerding was born November 14, 1936 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Herman and Bernadine (Hoeschen) Borgerding. He completed his elementary and high school education in Sauk Centre and joined the National Guard in 1955. In 1957, Ralph attended the NCO Academy in Fort Carson, Colorado. Ralph worked as a farmhand until 1963, at which time he attended the Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, graduating in 1965.

He was united in marriage to Arlis Lahr on June 23, 1964 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. When Ralph became a Master

Electrician, he and Arlis moved back to Sauk Centre in 1971 and started their own business, Ralph’s Electric.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre where he was active as an usher and member of the Saint Faustina Adoration Chapel Committee. Ralph was highly committed to pro-life work. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association and the Heritage Foundation.

Ralph enjoyed hunting, fishing, working, and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Arlis Borgerding of Sauk Centre; children, Randy (Judy) Borgerding of Eden Prairie, Julie (Dan) Boue’ of Columbus, Ohio, Jerry (Sara) Borgerding of Buffalo, Steve (Sara) Borgerding of Owatonna, Mary Jo (Ron) Lewis of Blaine, Katy Borgerding of Eden Prairie, Joe (Andrea) Borgerding of Sauk Centre, and Chris Borgerding of Canandaigua, New York; 19 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren with one on the way; and sisters, Alice Sunderman of Grey Eagle, Carol Kramer of Chanhassen, and Arlene Fuchs of Elrosa.

Clarence Fowler

Clarence C. Fowler, age 73, of Holdingford, MN, an International Man of Mystery passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, May 21st, 2021.

Clarence was born June 10th, 1947 in Bennington, VT to Emily (Demainiw) and Charles Fowler. He spent time as a child between Bennington, VT, Gorham, ND and the Holdingford area. He graduated from Holdingford High School in 1966 where he was a 3-sport athlete in football, basketball, and track. He attended St. Cloud State University for a short period of time before he voluntarily enlisted into the U.S. Army. He was a member of the 5th Mechanized Infantry (Red Diamond) serving a tour in Vietnam.

After 2 years, 9 months and 15 days he was honorably discharged from the Army. He then returned home enrolling at St. Cloud vocational school where he became an electrician. He took those skills and became a staff electrician at St. John’s University in 1973 where he worked for 39 years until his retirement in July, 2012.

This resulted in a “coupon deal” for his 4 kids’ higher education.

Clarence was married April 15th, 1972 to Leone Meier at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford, MN. They purchased the Hugo Voss estate in 1973 using the money Clarence

Medical: May 18, 2021: At approximately 7:45 p.m., received a call from The Landing bar and restaurant located at 18527 Co Rd 154 in Avon Township which is located approximately 4 miles north of the city of Avon. The caller reported that Peter Hagemann, 21, of Avon, was working at the restaurant and sustained significant oil burns to his arms and back. Once on scene a medical helicopter was requested due to the extent of Hagemann’s injuries. Deputies learned Hagemann was attempting to relieve pressure on a commercial piece of kitchen equipment when it spilled cooking oil burning the victim. Hagemann was airlifted from the scene for further treatment

by North Memorial Air Care.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office responded, as well as, Avon Fire Department and Mayo Ambulance.

ATV Accident: May 25, 2021: At 6:06 pm, received a call of an ATV rollover at the intersection of County Road 168 and Thunder Road located in Melrose Township. The caller stated all five occupants of the ATV were alert and that there were injuries.

When deputies arrived on scene, they located a 2020 Polaris Ranger side-by-side near the intersection. The driver of the ATV was identified as Roxane Johnson, 34, of Melrose.

Johnson said they were traveling eastbound on County Road 168 when she began to negotiate a left turn near Thunder Road and the ATV began leaning to the right. The ATV then tipped onto its right side. All occupants were wearing their seatbelts.

The front seat passenger was identified as Trina Hinnenkamp, 50, of Melrose. She sustained road rash to her right arm and right knee. A juvenile passenger was located on the right rear side of the ATV. When the ATV tipped it landed on the juvenile passenger’s ankle causing a possible ankle injury. Passersby were able to lift the ATV off the juvenile’s ankle.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office responded, as well as, the Melrose Police Department, Melrose Fire Department, and the Melrose Ambulance Service. The crash is believed to be speed related.

had saved during his time in the military. He was quite proud that he used his money to buy the land rather than buy a fast car like many of his peers returning from the war. He would smile and say, “They all crashed those cars.” He thought he couldn’t “crash” his land investment.

His 12 acres was his little slice of heaven.

It was tucked away far enough where he could have some gun play and burn whatever he wanted. He posited that “If you get it hot enough, anything will burn.”

His four children and grandkids kept him busy with hunting, fishing and all of their sports.

He attended many a football game, swim meet and track events over the years. He was also a member of the Holdingford Volunteer Fire Department for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Leone, his sisters; Kathryn (Bill) Stangler of Brainerd, Dora (Gerald) Grams of St. Cloud, Valerie Brassor (Sheldon) of Willmington, Vermont, Cassie Bell of West Virginia, his children, Jacob Fowler (Carla), Eric Fowler (Amy), Sarah Fowler, Charles Fowler, and five grandchildren; Isaac, Makenna, Tyler, Lily and Louise.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Emily & Charles, his half-brother Jay Fowler, along with infant grandson, Caden Fowler.

Clarence will be cremated. A Memorial Service will be held at The Landing in St. Anna, MN on Friday, May 28th. A “Happy Hour” will begin at 3pm with the service to begin at 4pm. A private family interment will be held at a later date.

Burtrum City • May 3, 2021 The Burtrum City Council meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 3rd, 2021 by Mayor Ron Strassburg.

In attendance was Ron Strassburg, Kevin Rohde, Sharon Erickson, Sara Macho, Mitchell Bruggenthies and Laura Horvath.

Minutes from the April 5th, 2021 meeting were read and approved by a motion made by Sharon Erickson and seconded by Mitchell Bruggenthies, upon vote motion was carried and minutes were accepted.

Next the finance report was read and approved; a motion made by Sara Macho and seconded by Kevin Rohde, finance report was accepted.

The city discussed the current bills/invoices and upon a motion made by Sara Macho and seconded by Kevin Rohde bills were paid.

City discussed old/new business: Old Business: -Gave an update for cost per household on Greater Gas Company, City folk would like a survey conducted to see how many people are interested in getting gas hooked up?

-Class 5 for dust control will be added this month.

-The yield sign that was knocked down will be put back up – City will check with HWY dept at putting more traffic signs up around town?

City discussed ordinance on mowing Remember to get a city permit if building or adding permanent structures on your property.

Stroke Awareness Month: BE FAST for First Signs Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability and fifth for death in the United States, according to the American Stroke Association. Strokes occur when a blood vessel carrying oxygen and vital nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or ruptures. When this occurs, part of the brain is deprived of blood and oxygen, destroying millions of valuable nerve cells within minutes.

Dear Motor Medics, I am on the fence about installing a replacement engine in my Silverado truck or just selling it to a yard for scrap. I have owned it for ten years and really like it and if the engine would not have failed, I would not even think of getting a different vehicle. I have already spent a lot of money on repairs the past two years including a new transmission and brakes and tires to name just a few. When should you keep a vehicle verses scraping one?

First you need to look at the value of your vehicle assuming it had a good running engine. What are those vehicles selling for? Once that is established find out what it will cost to repair yours with a new or low mileage used engine and do some math. Selling a vehicle for scrap is one of the lowest prices you will get and often you can put a used engine in and recover the cost of the engine plus a de cent amount for the vehicle when running correctly. You have already put a lot into it, so you know the vehicle well. If your cost to fix it is comparable to buying another similar model vehicle, you are likely better off than buying someone else’s problem.
