Celebrate work on Labor Day -By Harvey Mackay Of all the years to celebrate the true meaning of Labor Day, certainly this year has given us many reasons.

Research from the Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that employment in 2019 is running at an all-time high, with a remarkable 132 million people in the workforce. That figure includes record employment numbers for minorities and women. Manufacturing is seeing a revival in this country. And with unemployment hovering around 3.7 percent, Labor Day should have plenty of revelers.

Let’s start with a little history.

The first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5, 1882, when 10,000 workers marched in New York City from City Hall to Union Square. Bear in mind, this event occurred in the era of 12-hour workdays, seven-day-a-week schedules, child labor and dismal working conditions.

Oregon was the first state to make

Labor Day a legal holiday in 1887, followed by a string of other states.

Recognizing the significance of the movement, Congress passed an act in 1894 making the first Monday in September a legal holiday throughout the country.

Fast forward to today, and think about how times have changed. Forty hour workweeks, strict safety enforcement, benefits including paid vacations and health insurance, unfilled jobs and opportunities in so many fields – those are reasons to celebrate.

“American workers are collectively the most productive in the world,” says Robert Dilenschneider, founder and chairman of the Dilenschneider Group and former president and CEO of Hill and Knowlton. “It is this drive and determination that helps make our nation the greatest on earth. We should be proud of this fact and do whatever we can to keep this great spirit alive.”

I completely agree with Bob. As we built and grew MackayMitchell Envelope Company from its stumbling infancy to today, we’ve always tried to focus on the people who keep our doors open. We’ve had our share of challenges in the envelope manufacturing business

– starting with fax machines and email, and progressing to direct billing, electronic ticketing and a dozen other internet product replacements.

Our employees have stuck with us through some lean days and helped find ways to trim costs and innovate processes and products. They share our successes as well. I would be willing to wager that most businesses and organizations would echo my sentiments. Without a reliable and dedicated workforce, their operations are down the tubes.

I think it is tremendously important that workers have the support of their employers, but equally important that they demonstrate the drive to make an impact in their workplaces. I am especially fond of Will Rogers’ thoughts Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne The Forming Years The last 100 years have changed us as a people.

We hear of “trial by fire.” and our ancestors experienced it.

The American population, especially during the period from 1917 to 1945, lived through some very trying times.

These trials caused many people to become more conservative and to look toward a superior being for help and comfort.

WWI involved sending our troops to Europe. Those left at home had a constant concern for the welfare of their loved ones over on the Western Front. Along with the war, there was an outbreak of “Spanish Flu,” which infected and killed millions, actually infecting a third of the world population.

There was no medical solution for this disease. Many people prayed for an end of the war and the flu, since it apparently was the only solution available. The war did end and so did the flu.

Along the way, there was the threat of scarlet fever, small pox, polio and all of those other diseases which at the time were a very serious threat to life in America. Many prayers were offered for those effected and an ultimate cure.

These diseases today are very rare, due to scientific advancements.

The market crashed in 1929 creating an economic disaster. Savings accounts disappeared. Banks closed their doors, locking up more money. Without

money, manufacturing operations and agricultural products could no longer be easily sold which created the “great depression.” Not only were people without money, but they were also without food. My Grandmother sent boxes of sausage to friends in Kenosha, Wisconsin. She had a lot of virtually worthless pork and the Wisconsin people couldn’t afford food. They were thankful for the gifts, because they said it kept them alive. Many prayers were offered for help for the depression and it went away.

In the 1930’s there was a drought which caused greater hardship when partnered with the depression. It locally was so dry that Basswood trees were cut so that the cows could eat the leaves, since the pasture was dried up. Pigs were pastured in the woods so that they could dig for roots for feed. Slews and lake levels were lowered by the drought and swamp-grass grew on the newly exposed ground. The swamp-grass was cut, dragged to higher ground to dry and hauled to the barn for next winter’s cattle feed. This was a very stressful time. In the later 1930’s it did begin to rain. Prayers answered.

Along came WWII. War on two fronts. Virtually everyone in the United States was involved in the war effort, whether being involved in actual military action, war material manufacturing or producing food needed at home or overseas. Four years of a combined national effort to save our country.

When we see pictures of the destruction and suffering in countries which were directly involved, we were thankful that we were able to keep the war off of our shores. Many families lost loved ones

on work: “In order to succeed, you must know what you are doing, like what you are doing, and believe in what you are doing.”

“Know what you are doing” is central to success in any venture. Yes, we often learn as we go, but having and maintaining essential skills is not negotiable. Winners prepare, train, study, apply themselves and keep working to become the best at what they do. It’s the American way!

“Like what you are doing” can present some challenges. I’m always surprised how many people will tell you that they hate their jobs but do nothing about it. Some jobs are truly dreadful, to be sure. But attitude also plays a significant role. Let me share a little secret: the secret to happiness, success, satisfaction and fulfillment is not in doing what you like. It’s liking what you do.

“Believe in what you are doing” is a little harder to define for those who struggle through the work day just for a paycheck. The most successful people I know are not in a job – any job – for something to do. They are in their work

to do something. This is the labor force that any employer dreams about.

Years ago I found a poem by Art Linkletter, humorist and radio and television host, that described what it takes to turn good into better, boredom into stimulation and discontent into commitment: Do a little more than you’re paid to; Give a little more than you have to; Try a little harder than you want to; Aim a little higher than you think possible; And give a lot of thanks to God for health, family and friends.

In the years that followed WWII our thinking seems to have changed. It seems that Americans aren’t currently finding themselves in situations which have only a faith-based solution.

Financial stability and scientific medical solutions have had a great change in our lives. It seems that technology is now able to prevent or solve previously unsolvable problems. Now we aren’t

praying as much. In the future we will again face situations for which there is no ready solution. We’ll then look to our faith for help.

Explorer’s Program Informational Meeting The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office will be holding an informational meeting for youth ages 15-21 years old who are interested in a law enforcement career on Sunday, September 15, 2019 at 6:00 p.m.

The Explorer’s Program has been in existence since 1976. Accepted members learn response tactics for everyday law enforcement calls, report writing, defensive tactics, and arrest protocol. These skills are put to the test at several competitions across the state of Minnesota against other agencies who participate in the Explorer’s Program. Members

are also used to volunteer at community events by providing security, first aid and traffic control. Explorers are also allowed to participate in ride-alongs with deputies and sit-alongs with dispatchers.

The group meets every Sunday night from 5:30 p.m. to 9:15 p.m.

Interested youth are encouraged to attend the informational meeting with their parents or guardians. Attendees are requested to RSVP to Deputy Eric Schultz by email at eric.schultz@ co.stearns.mn.us.

Obituaries Leona C. Blenker

Leona C. Blenker, age 103 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Thursday, August 22, 2019 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, August 26 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Leona Catherine Hinnenkamp was born May 20, 1916 in Melrose Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Frank and Elizabeth (Schmiesing) Hinnenkamp. She grew up the oldest of 13 children. On May 29, 1935 she was united in marriage to Bernard Blenker at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Leona farmed north of Melrose until 1963. She started working as a cook for Gene’s Café in Melrose and later worked as a cook for St. Mary’s Church and at the school for their hot lunch program.

The word of her great cooking spread and soon she was cooking for weddings, funerals, anniversaries, birthdays, and for

local businesses such as the Credit Union, Stearns Electric, V.F.W. and Sports Banquet.

Leona also baked many beautiful wedding, birthday, and anniversary cakes.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Sts. Bernard and Elizabeth Council, Women’s Catholic Order of Foresters, Christian Women, and the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary. Leona enjoyed playing cards, BINGO, and organizing bus trips to the casino. She was also the sesquicentennial queen of Melrose.

Survivors include her children, Jerry (Phyllis) Blenker of Melrose, Ivan (Renee) Blenker of Melrose, and Bernard (Jenell) Blenker of Blaine; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Jeanette Zehrer of Melrose and Ida Pung of Louisiana.

Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Blenker on February 29, 1980; parents; children, Marilyn Blenker and Ralph Blenker; grandson, Daryl Blenker; brothers and sisters, Lydia Beuning, Mary Ann Tooley, Ernest Hinnenkamp, Hubert Hinnenkamp, Fred Hinnenkamp, Jim Hinnenkamp, Lillian Hinnenkamp, Irene Athmann, Monica Hinnenkamp, and Sylvester Hinnenkamp.

Jerome Mathias Schmidt was born March 11, 1926 in Richmond, Minnesota to George and Susan (Wengler) Schmidt. He served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1945. Jerome married Madeline Zinneil on June 14, 1949.

He owned and operated Highway 7 “66” in Excelsior, Minnesota from 1950 to 1980. He

She graduated from Upsala High School.

She was united in marriage to Ralph Lange on April 4, 1954. Audrey had many jobs over the years, but the one she loved most was being a waitress at the Uptown Cafe in Upsala. She loved jokes and spending time with her family.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Gregory of St. Cloud and Brian (Beth) of Upsala; grandchildren, Brianna Lange & Jessica Lange; sister, Marjorie (Linus) Lehner of Upsala and many nieces and nephews.

Audrey was preceded in death by death by her husband, Ralph (2015); infant sons, Ricky and Gerald; infant daughter, Jessica; brothers, Carl Stenholm, Wallace Stenholm, and sister, Gloria Carlson.

F u n e r a l services were held Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at Holy Cross Church in St. Cloud for Kaden M. Ruesch, 18 of Holdingford, who passed away Thursday, August 22, 2019. Rev. Jeff Manthe officiated and burial was at North Star Cemetery in St. Cloud.

Kaden was born on September 26, 2000 to Karen Gielen (Ruesch) in St. Cloud. He worked as a cement layer and was a member of Sonrise Church in Avon. Kaden enjoyed longboarding, rap music, dogs, photography, nature, fishing and sports. He had a deep

Jerome enjoyed traveling, fishing and hunting. For many years, Jerry and Madeline wintered in Lake Havasu City, Arizona with many side trips to Las Vegas and Laughlin, Arizona to gamble. He was also a dog lover and trainer. His dog, Goldie was a state champion and was featured in “Field and Stream” magazine.

Jerome was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Knights of Columbus, and American Legion Post 101.

Survivors include his sister, Angie Thyen of Hastings; many nieces and nephews; friends, Gerry and Shirley Osendorf of Melrose, Father Ken Thielman, and Amy Lamusga and family.

Jerome was preceded in death by his wife, Madeline Schmidt; parents; sister, Delores Kemper, and brothers, Julius and LuVern Schmidt.

Serving as casket bearers will be Mark Kemper, Randy Kemper, Ivan Lamusga, Maximillian Lamusga, Samuel Lamusga, and Larry Lamusga. Gift bearers will be Gerry and Shirley Osendorf.

Donald “Don” Bartkowicz

The mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Donald “Don” Bartkowicz, age 89 of Bowlus will be at 11:00 AM Friday, August 30, 2019 at the St. Edwards Catholic Church in Elmdale MN. Burial will be in the parish cemetery immediately following mass. There will be a visitation from 4-7:00 PM Thursday August 29th, at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home of Holdingford, and Friday August 30th from 10-11:00 AM Friday at the church in Elmdale. Parish prayers will be at 4:30 PM followed by Knights of Columbus prayers.

Don was born September 11, 1929 in Sobieski,MN to Stanley and Cecelia (Kedrowski) Bartkowicz and passed away Monday, August 26 2019, at the Mother of Mercy Campus of Care in Albany. He married Bernadine Maciej on May 15, 1950 at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Elmdale.

They lived in the metro area for a time while he worked at the Ford Motor Plant until they decided they wanted to move back to the Elmdale area. After a short time farming the opportunity came for them to purchase Bernadine’s parents farm in Elmdale Township. While farming, Don worked in Little Falls for many years at the Hennepin Paper Mill but decided his true commitment was to his family and farming.

Don was a lifetime member of St. Edwards Catholic Church. Through the years, he served on the church Council, as church Trustee and as a mass Lector. He had a vision and followed it through to organize a Knights of Columbus council in his local area. His dream was fulfilled with the organization of the Knights of Columbus #12604. His dedication allowed him to play different roles and earn different titles as the council and his commitment grew. On his way he received The Star of Honor, became

a Fourth Degree, would serve as Faithful Navigator of the Fourth Degree and was named Minnesota Knight of the Year.

Don had a love for all sports. Earlier in life he enjoyed playing softball. He was always up for a competitive card game of Smear or 500. In the early 1980’s, he became a part of a group who pursued the dream of having a community recreational gathering facility. He was very involved with what became the construction and the organization of the Upsala Recreational Building. From there, it lead to him being instrumental in the forming of the Upsala Horseshoe League of 60 plus members, in which he was President of for many years.

During those many years, he proudly wore the title of “Mr. Horseshoe” with a high pitch average of 40-50%. His love of sports was carried over to watching the Twins or Vikings games but what he truly enjoyed was being a fan of the local sports teams.

He enjoyed watching his sons/grandsons play football, basketball and baseball.

Mix in some wrestling and then add in his daughters/granddaughters basketball, volleyball and softball games and you could be guaranteed to see him with Bernie in the stands on any given night.

Don is survived by his wife, Bernadine Bartkowicz, Avon; his children; Diane (Larry) Berens, Blaine; James (Lora) Bartkowicz, Bowlus; Dave (Nancy) Bartkowicz, Circle Pines; Leonice (Mike) Urbanski, Holdingford; Rodney (Lynn) Bartkowicz, Holdingford; Mary Lou (Butch) Gerads, Bowlus; Kevin (Lisa) Bartkowicz, Mound; Daughter-in-law Jane (Randy) Tretter, Burtrum; 26 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Ernie Bartkowitz.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his son, Ken Bartkowicz, son-in-law, Jeff Rogers and his brother and sisters, Gertrude Milbert, Esther Lashinski, Rita Stewart, Lorraine Jarnot, Richard Bartkowicz and Elizabeth Maciej.

Harvey R. Thieschafer, age 84, of Melrose died on Monday, August 26, 2019 at CentraCare (PineVilla) Melrose Health Care Center in Melrose.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m.

Saturday, August 31st at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose with Rev. Kenneth Thielman presiding. A visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon prior to the service.

Inurnment with military honors provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard will take place in Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Melrose.

Harvey Robert Thieschafer was born August 23, 1935 in Melrose, Minnesota. He is the son of Joseph and Marie (Wiechmann) Thieschafer. Harvey attended country school and enrolled in the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged June 20, 1956.

Harvey was a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. He enjoyed making poppies for the VA Hospital, listening to “Old Time Music” on KASM, and watching the Minnesota Twins. At Pine Villa, he especially enjoyed the BINGO games. Though he struggled with severe epilepsy, he worked hard to be independent.

Harvey is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Betty Thieschafer of Melrose; sister and brother-in-law, Terry and Ron Butkowski of Melrose; nieces and nephews, Brenda, Jessica, Justin, Sheila, Scott, Tina, and Stacy; thirteen great nieces and nephews; and six great-great nieces and nephews with one on the way.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Marie Thieschafer; nephews, Steven Thieschafer and Christopher Thieschafer; and great nephew, Mitchell Primus.

Memorials are preferred to Juvenile Diabetes of Minnesota and Sauk Centre/ Melrose Special Olympics.

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2002 4x4 GMC Yukon that I have been driving for 200,000 miles. I have changed all of the fluids on this vehicle at the severe recommended service times as indicated by the manufacturer in hopes of preserving the life of the truck. From the beginning, I have been using fully synthetic engine oil starting with the first fluid change and as the other fluids came due I replaced them with the fully synthetic fluid. After all of the care I took to make sure all of the fluids never exceeded their times I overlooked one; the power steering fluid. Now with 200,000 miles it did have a failure of the pump. I will be installing a new pump and I want to use fully synthetic fluid in it. Can I just use fully synthetic transmission fluid? I can’t seem to find a parts store with fully synthetic power steering fluid on the shelf.

-Mark in Sioux Falls, South Dakota Dear Mark, No, don’t ever use fluids of a type not recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. There are fully synthetic fluids out there which are compatible with a GM system that should do the trick. If you use a fluid in a system for which it was not designed you can have many unfavorable results from premature parts wear or undesired operation to major safety issues. Always stick with the fluid which was designed for the system you’re working on.

- Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I am having an issue with my current car which seems to have plagued me on

a couple other vehicles as well over the years. It is a 2006 Ford Explorer 2wd and I can’t seem to get the front end lined up so that it will drive straight down the road. I have had three different shops check the front end, one aligned it several times and it still pulls to the left. It does this under acceleration and deceleration as well as cruise and does so at any speed over 25 mph. They tell me nothing in the front end is worn but are guessing it could be a left shock. My tires are about two years old and have more than half of their tread wear left.

The only issue other than the pull is a slight wobble in the steering wheel at speeds under 20 mph. Do you have any ideas?

-Darwin in Madison, Wisconsin Dear Darwin, Have they checked the tires for a problem by rotating them side to side for testing purposes? Ask them if they did this. Sometimes tires can fail and cause a severe pull to one side and swapping sides will change the pull. If so it’s time for new tires. They should also look at the brakes to make sure they are not dragging causing a pull. If it is brakes they would likely be very hot on one side or the other.

Carol A. Bennett

A Memorial Service will be held 10:30 AM, Thursday, August 29, 2019, at the Long Prairie Grey Eagle High School Gymnasium, Long Prairie, MN, for Carol Bennett, age 63, of Long Prairie, who passed away August 21, 2019. Pastor Dave Gibson of Eden Prairie will officiate and the family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service at the school on Thursday.

Carol was born on August 22, 1955, to Bruce and Harriet (Oien) Holmquist in Buffalo, MN. She graduated from Buffalo High School in 1973 and went on to attend Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. It was here that she met the love of her life, Barry Bennett, whom she married on July 30, 1977. Soon after they began their family.

Carol provided support to her husband and stability to her family as they alternated between New Orleans/New York and Buffalo based on Barry’s NFL career. She was dedicated to have a Christ-centered relationship with her husband and children.

After she moved with her family to Long Prairie, Carol worked as a tax preparer

for a short time with H&R Block before starting with Dan Borgmann, CPA, in Sauk Centre, MN, where she has worked for the past 20 tax seasons. She also volunteered her time to do audits at the Bible camps in the area and she faithfully served as Treasurer at First Baptist Church. Carol loved the outdoors. Gardening and camping trips with Barry and her kids brought her joy. She also enjoyed both water skiing and downhill skiing. However, hunting season brought a special excitement as she sought to shoot a bigger deer than Barry. She loved to travel, both nationally and internationally.

This, together with her quest to serve others, inspired her to take several mission trips to Nome, Alaska.

Ultimately, Carol cherished her time with family and will be deeply missed by her daughters Lindsi (Andy) Barnhart, International Falls; Abbie (Frankie) Schoonover, Volborg, MT; and Lacy (Brian) Wiest, Boise, ID; sons Barry Jr (Kristin), Eden Prairie; Lenard (Lexi), Alexandria, VA; and Dylan, Long Prairie; brothers John Holmquist, Buffalo, MN; Rand (Colleen) Holmquist, Buffalo, MN; sisters Kris (Bob) Kruck, Buffalo, MN; Sandy Holmquist, Maple Lake, MN; mother Harriet Holmquist, Buffalo, MN, and grandchildren Aiden, Abigail, Frank, Cael, Molly, Luke and Anna.

She is preceded in death by her father, sister-in-law Barbara Holmquist, and niece Gina Holmquist.

Bertilla K. “Bert” Caspers, age 91, of Melrose, the beloved wife of John L. Caspers, died peacefully surrounded by her family on We d n e s d a y, August 21, 2019 at Tree of Life Assisted Living in New Munich, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 31st at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating.

Inurnment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday, August 30th at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church in Meire Grove.

Parish prayers will be at 7 p.m. on Friday evening.

Bertilla Katherine Sand was born May 22, 1928 in New Munich, Minnesota, daughter of Peter and Elizabeth (Thull) Sand.

On June 4, 1951, she married John Lawrence Caspers at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. After marrying, she and John made a home outside Melrose, Minnesota. She was a patient, compassionate mother and good friend to many, a woman who possessed a faith-based gift for seeing the best in people, especially her children and husband despite their shenanigans. She loved to play bridge, create flowerbeds, read books, and dance. Bert and John, after they retired, square-danced all-over Stearns County. Bert started a line-dancing group at the Senior Center and for many years

taught line dancing. The group performed at nursing homes, Veteran homes, and in the Barley Days parade. At home in their living room, she and John would play one of the songs and teach the routine to her children and grandchildren. A courageous woman, a patient woman, a stubborn woman. She taught her children to pursue their dreams with a generosity of spirit and a respect for the different kinds of people in the world.

She leaves behind her children, Debra (Jerry Glantz) Caspers of Lake Elmo, Steven (Polly Smull) Caspers of Minneapolis, Julee (Ben) Agar of Westby, WI, Nona Caspers of San Francisco, CA, Philip (Christy) Caspers of Bloomington, John (Allyson) Caspers of Woodbury, Mary Kaye (Glen) Schneider of Loretto, and Joel Caspers of Chaska; 20 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Lee (Rita) Sand of St. Cloud; sister-in-law, Jenny Sand of St. Cloud; and brother-in-law, Art Hopfer of Lake Henry.

Barry was blessed with athletic abilities which, together with his character and work ethic, caused him to stand out among coaches and peers. He excelled in wrestling, earning the MN state championship in high school before going on to earn 3 national collegiate championships. Success with high school and college football led all the way to the NFL where he played 11 seasons, from 1978 to 1988, with the New Orleans Saints, New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings.

While in college Barry met the love of his life, Carol Holmquist, who became his most important teammate. They married July 30, 1977, in Buffalo, MN, and soon after began their family. He and his young family went between living in New Orleans/ New York and Buffalo depending on the NFL season. A teaching position provided an opportunity for him to return to Long Prairie in 1992. He also enjoyed coaching

August 19, 2019: At 17:45 a residence on 130th St. in Grey Eagle was burglarized.

The suspects have been apprehended in Becker County. The suspects are believed to have thrown items in a field between Grey Eagle and Long Prairie. Please contact the Todd County Sheriff’s Office if you encounter these items.

August 21, 2019: At 19:40 received a 911 call regarding a traffic complaint on County Road 36, Long Prairie. The reporting party advised she was walking with her juvenile child, when a dump truck style vehicle was traveling towards them at a high rate of speed. The pedestrian’s had to enter the ditch to avoid being struck by thecommercial vehicle. A child’s bike was struck and damaged by the vehicle. The vehicle is described as a red and white dump truck, pulling a trailer with a white colored skid loader on it. If youhave any information regarding this incident, please contact the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.

August 21, 2019: At 4:32 p.m. received a 911 call of a deceased male at a rural Long Prairie residence.The reporting party went to the residence to check on a friend who had not returned phone calls or texts since 08-20-2019. Todd County Deputies arrived on scene and upon checking the residence, two adults were found deceased under suspicious circumstances.The scene is being processed by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The names of the deceased will be released upon notification of family members.In the court of the investigation, investigators identified a suspect as Dylan John Bennett, DOB 1122-1996. Bennett is believed to be driving a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe blue in color bearing Minnesota license plate #BCK487.

Based on information gathered during the investigation it is determined that there is no threat to public safety at this time.

UPDATE: 8/23/2019: The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office has identified two persons found deceased in their Long Prairie home on Wednesday, August 21st.

They have been identified as Barry Martin Bennett, 63, and Carol Ann Bennett, 63, of 22047 Ginseng Road in Long Prairie. We are awaiting word on their cause and manner of death. Investigators are seeking the public’s assistance in locating Dylan John Bennett, age 22. In addition, investigators have located the vehicle sought in connection with Dylan Bennett outside of Minnesota.

UPDATE: 08-24-19: The Todd County Sheriff’s Office today announced that Dylan John Bennett, the man sought in the murders of his parents, Carol and Barry Bennett of Long Prairie, has been taken into custody.

Using intelligence developed by the Todd County Sheriff’s Office, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) and the FBI, Mexican law enforcement located Dylan Bennett shortly before Noon today at a hotel in Cancun, Mexico, and took him into custody. Dylan Bennett had contacted Sheriff Steve Och today just prior to his arrest explaining that he was aware that law enforcement was looking for him and announcing his intention to turn himself into the FBI. His arrest came before Minnesota investigators could communicate that information to the Mexican authorities.The FBI is taking him into custody now and will transport him to Minnesota in the coming days. Upon his return to Minnesota, Bennett will be arraigned in Todd County District Court to face the murder charges that were filed Friday in Todd County. Earlier this week, the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Barry and Carol Bennett died of homicide due to gunshot wounds. They had been found deceased in their Long Prairie home by Todd County deputies on August 21, 2019. Since then, BCA and Sheriff’s Investigators had learned Dylan Bennett purchased an airline ticket from Ohio to Cancun earlier this week. They had been tracking his cell phone, credit card and ATM activity in Cancun since that time.

That information was communicated to Mexican authorities through the FBI. The

Todd County Sheriff’s Office has been conducting the investigation into the murders with assistance from the BCA, FBI, the Central Minnesota Violent Offender Task Force, law enforcementin Illinois, Ohio and Georgia, and Mexican authorities. This remains an open and active investigation August 26, 2019: At 06:21 received a call of a one vehicle property damage accident that occurred near the intersection of County 11 and 210th St. in Reynolds TWP Sect 4 near the Reynolds Baptist Church. 32 year old Kevin Pommier, rural Long Prairie, reports that he has traveling southbound on County 11 when he went off the road on the left side. His Buick LeSabre went in the ditch and struck a fence and utility pole.

Kevin received minor injuries in the incident. The vehicle received severe damage in the incident.

August 26, 2019: During the week of August 18th through August 24th, the Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to 258 calls for service. The following were the types of calls: 94 traffic stops, 22 civil process, 10 suspicious activity type complaints, 1 damage to property complaint, 4 welfare checks, 7 assist other agencies, 3 accidents, 6 traffic complaints, 4 disturbances/domestics, 3 car/deer accidents, 7 alarms and 21 farm animals out complaints. Todd County Dispatch received 132 - 911 Calls during the week.

finances. Nope, I wouldn’t take care of it for him—not at his age. This young man needs to have some skin in the game.

I’d tell him to sell the fancy car, and get something way cheaper to drive for a while. I’m talking about a little beater in the $2,000 to $3,000 range. It sounds like he’ll have to get a small loan to cover the difference, but a little car debt is better than a lot of car debt. I’d also advise him to pick up a part-time job nights or weekends until he gets that credit card debt paid off.

In other words, let him wallow in it and worry about things for a while. Then, if he’s willing to accept responsibility for his actions, and starts handling money more wisely, you two might help out every so often with a little extra cash on the payments.

But I’d test his resolve first. And I’d want to see proof he has learned from his mistakes!

Back to School Traffic, Buses

By Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Well, here we are again. The end of the summer. The weather is supposed to be good this weekend so make sure you get out and enjoy it. Depending on which school district you live in, the school year starts this coming Tuesday.

With school starting, we will all see an increase in morning traffic. A good portion of that traffic will be school buses. If you have paid any attention to some of the television stations lately, you have seen an increase in the coverage of school bus issues and the “near misses.” Most school buses have cameras now and you could see just how close these “near misses” were to being tragic events.

As we start this year, let’s all be aware of school buses, the children waiting to get picked up and those who walk to school. We can all do our part to help ensure their safety.

The graphic to the right has the general rules for when you must stop for a school bus and the one instance where you don’t. The simplest rule is this: If the red lights are on and the stop arm out, STOP. Don’t proceed until the bus retracts the arm and turns off the lights. The only exception to this is a road divided by a physical barrier between the lanes of travel. Like traffic signals, school buses have a handy dandy feature to let you know things are about to change...

Those lights come on 500 feet from a stop. As with traffic signals, this is not a signal to speed up to try and make it.

Let’s all be on our best driving behavior. It may be busier so give yourself some extra time. Be aware and looking around, conditions are going to change with school starting.

With some basic safe driving on everyone’s part, we can make sure this is a safe start to school opening. To all the kids out there, have a great year!
