Good enough never is -By Harvey Mackay There’s a good reason why Debbie Fields of cookie fame is so successful, and she summed it up in an aphorism I’ll never forget – “Good enough never is.”

D e b b i e told me how she coined that phrase after she visited one of her first stores.

She walked in unannounced and saw a large crowd of customers in line. The problem was she noticed the most recent batch of cookies was overcooked, and she didn’t want those cookies sold. is.” And she threw the entire batch in the trash and made the staff start over. She went through the line explaining what had happened. After apologizing to everyone, she said their orders would be free, if they came back and gave them another chance to show they were the best cookies in the world.

I can attest to how good they are because Debbie made a batch for my wife and I when we visited her at her Aspen home. What a cookie, and what a lesson!

I also learned another valuable lesson from Debbie. She started cooking at an early age because her mother’s cooking was just “good enough,” and Debbie wanted better. Initially her mother was not in favor of Debbie starting her cookie business because she thought it would fail.

That got Debbie realizing that there are two sides of life. There is the negative side that points out the risks and wants to rain on your parade. Then there is the positive side that cheers you on and roots for your success. It’s up to you to determine the best path.

Fortunately Debbie Fields chose the positive side, as the company now has over 300 franchised and licensed locations throughout the United States and in 22 other countries since she opened her first store in 1977.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Yesterday’s Kids (2)

Going back in recorded history as far as Ancient Greece, the older adult generation was concerned about the younger generations.

They felt that the younger generations were disrespectful, not properly educated and were too involved in worthless pursuits. Even today some of us that are more mature may occasionally “shake our heads.” “What are they thinking?”

We fail to realize that the new generation is constantly exposed to daily influences from communications and technology, many of which didn’t exist in our youth.

The younger generation is taught by their life influences, to think and solve problems differently. Is it wrong? No. It’s just not necessarily the way we would do it.

When my generation was growing up, girls seemed to make up a lot of our thought process. As time passed, that concentration was greatly reduced. The next item that was on our minds was cars.

The dream of rebuilding an old wreck into a machine that could squeal the tires for a block was a dream. We worked, played ball, hunted, fished and walked over to see the neighbor kids. That, along with schoolwork made up our lives. Not quite the same today.

There were some really dumb things which we tried, some of which we had heard about and wanted to try for ourselves. Some were actually tricks that we thought up totally on our own.

Picture this. It’s a beautiful, warm, sunny afternoon and a couple of kids are walking across the neighbors cow

pasture. They notice a cow standing, sleeping. One of the kids carefully walks up behind the cow, moves out to her side and gives a push. The cow tips over. It’s called “cow tipping.”

There were many garden snakes in years past. If you caught a couple of them and drop them down the exhaust pipe of the big John Deere and start the tractor up, the first bang would send the snakes up into the air. Never had a name for that trick.

On a warm spring night when you were working the field, you and the neighbor kid would both take the muffler off of the John Deere so that the neighbors for about a mile around knew that you were out working the field. The tractor seemed to have additional power and the fire shooting out of the pipe was really “cool.”

Every basement seemed to have a stored supply of homemade wine. If the kids got together on an afternoon when it was raining and the parents weren’t home, you might sample some of the stored treasure.

Sometimes in the fall, someone knew of some apple trees and maybe a patch of water melon that needed to be sampled.

The apples were usually wormy or sour and the water melons were usually not ripe. But it was a fun evening imagining that you needed to run fast before someone took a shot at you.

Some of these things are not done by the young people today and that’s probably OK. I’m sure the older generation thought we were nothing more than delinquents.

Flashing Yellow & Red Lights? Oh, it’s a School Bus! School is back in session in most areas.

Kids and school buses will again become part of every motorist’s morning and afternoon commute. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office would like to pass on these reminders and safety tips when it comes to school buses.

• If you see flashing yellow lights, it means the school bus is about to stop. If you are behind the bus, it is illegal to pass on the right side. If you are going in the opposite direction, passing a school bus with flashing yellow lights is legal but it must be done safely.

• If you see flashing red lights, it means the bus has stopped and is loading or unloading kids. The only time it is okay to pass a

bus with red lights flashing is if you are going the opposite direction on a separate roadway.

Otherwise you must stop at least 20 feet from the bus, no matter which direction you are going or what lane you are in. Kids may have to cross the street from the opposite side to catch their bus.

• Altering your route or schedule to avoid a bus is one way motorists can help improve safety. In doing so, motorists won’t find themselves behind a bus and potentially putting children at risk.

• Watch for school crossing patrols and pedestrians. Reduce speeds in and around school zones.

Take it from Orison Swett Marden, founder of SUCCESS magazine, “The quality of your work will have a great deal to do with the quality of your life.”

Here’s a work/life example that illustrates his point.

In ancient Rome, when the scaffolding was removed from a completed Roman arch, the law read that the Roman engineer who built the arch had to stand beneath it. The point was that if the arch came crashing down, he would experience the responsibility first hand. As a result, the Roman engineer knew that the quality of his work was crucial and would have a direct personal impact on his life.

Obituaries Rembert A. “Bert” Sand Rembert A. “Bert” Sand, age 86 of Avon, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 1, 2017 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, September 7 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Dan Walz officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Rembert Alois Sand was born April 11, 1931 in New Munich, Minnesota to Leo and Catharina (Thull) Sand. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956.

Bert came home from the military to marry Lorraine Caspers on August 18, 1954, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove. After their marriage, the couple moved to Spokane, Washington where Bert was stationed in the military until 1956. The couple then moved to Minnesota and Bert started farming in 1957 on a farm near St. Wendel until 1965 when he bought the home farm south of New Munich. He enjoyed watching the Twins and amateur baseball, fishing, going to the casino, and driving his John Deere tractors.

Bert was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Joseph’s Men’s Society, St. Leo Court 786 Catholic Order of Foresters, and the American Legion Post 101.

Loren C. Paul, age 74, of Holdingford, died Wednesday, August 30, 2017 surrounded by his family, at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 5 at Community Country Church in Holdingford with Pastor Greg Valentine officiating. Interment was at South Elmdale Congregational Cemetery near Holdingford.

Loren Charles Paul was born November 27, 1942 in Hector, Minnesota to Wilfred and Leona (Winterfeldt) Paul. On June 19, 1960, he married Luella Edwards in Kennedy, Minnesota. After their marriage, they moved to the family farm, north of Holdingford, and later purchased the farm in 1970. Along with

farming, Loren started hauling sugar beets in 1965 in North Dakota. He looked forward to the sugar beet season every year, and took his dog, Penny, as his traveling companion.

He also worked for New Look Refurbishing (GATR) in Sauk Rapids and Avon Lime where he worked as a mechanic. He retired in 2005, but continued hauling sugar beets for a total of 52 years.

Loren was a member of Community Country Church in Holdingford and enjoyed playing his violin.

Survivors include his wife, Luella Paul of Holdingford; children, Julie (Billy) Scholz of Upsala, Tammy (Paul) Luethmers of Albany, and Dana Paul (Roger Gysberg) of Holdingford; five grandchildren, Tyler Paul, Lance Scholz, Stacy Luethmers, Jamie Luethmers, and Toni (Josh) Koehn; sister, Sharon Skroch of Elmdale; sister-in-law, Joella Lietz of Hoople, North Dakota, and brother-in-law, Ed Walker of Burtrum.

Loren was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Mary in 1960; infant son, James in 1964; granddaughter, Nicole Luethmers in 1994; brothers, Eugene and Allyn Paul; and sisters, Oradel Kulberg, Arlys Kulberg, and LouAnn Walker.

Serving as casket bearers were Derek Schaefer, Mark Mumme, Guy Phelps, Lyle Kulberg, Dale Kulberg, and Kenny Kulberg.

John T. Gorka

John T. Gorka, 72 year old resident of Sobieski, MN passed away August 31, 2017 at the Little Falls Care Center in Little Falls, MN. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Sobieski, MN with Father Jimmy Joseph officiating. Burial took place in the St. Edward’s Parish Cemetery in Elmdale, MN. John was born on October 19, 1944 in Little Falls, MN to the late Ed and Barbara (Kopka) Gorka. He grew up in Little Falls and attended school, graduating with the Class of 1962. He was united in marriage to Joyce Goebel on October 19, 1963 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls, MN. John and Joyce resided in Sobieski, Minnesota. He worked at the Sobieski Creamery for several years and later managed the Elmdale Creamery. While John was at the Elmdale Creamery he won several awards for his butter making abilities.

In 1976, John and Joyce together bought the Swanville Locker, where they later started their well-known Gorka’s Catering Service with their famous fried chicken and BBQ turkey. In 1987, they purchased Herbie’s Bar in Sobieski, where they also started their annual Bear Ass Pig Feed. John was a people person, everyone loved visiting with him, listening to his many stories as well as his many jokes which some of which only he could get away with. He was also an excellent cook, butcher and smokehouse tender. He was well known for his ability to prepare hams, chicken, sausages and soups.

John was a one of kind man that was loved by all, his legacy will be carried on by his loving family and the many great memories he made will be cherished by many.

John is survived by sons, Dan Gorka of Sobieski, MN, James (Tammy) Gorka of Flensburg, MN, David (Missy) Gorka of Burtrum, MN and Jason (Cary Blechinger) Gorka of Little Falls, MN; daughter, Donna Lukasavitz; siblings, Darlyne (Alphonse) Schlichting of New Brighton, MN, Roselyn Brezinka of Apple Valley, MN and Phillip (Aileen) Gorka of North Branch, MN: 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by parents, Ed and Barbara Gorka; loving wife of 50 years, Joyce Gorka and sister, Janet Janey.

Leo Anthony Maciej, Jr. Leo Anthony Maciej, Jr. (aka “Antone”), 70, of Bowlus, MN, died peacefully on September 2, 2017, as his Lord and Savior embraced him and welcomed him into heaven.

His funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, September 11th, at St Stanislaus Kostka Church in Bowlus, with Father Gregory Mastey officiating.

Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 am at the church prior to the funeral.

Antone is survived by brothers Al of Coon Rapids; Don (Jeanette) of Bowlus; Ken (Chris) of Elk River; Harvey (Mary) of Nickerson; Jim (Ann Marie) of Annandale; and Dennis of Elko, MN; sisters-in-law Odele of Rice; Collette of Zimmerman; Jeanne of Round Rock, TX; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Jennie (Sobiech) Maciej; brothers Ernie, Bob, Les; sister-in-law Kathie; and several nephews and a niece.

Antone was born on July 4, 1947 in Little Falls to Leo and Jennie Maciej. In 1965, he graduated from Royalton High School and entered Staples Voc-Tech School, where he graduated in 1967 as a tool and die maker.

Antone spent his entire working career in the Twin Cities, employed by Medtronic, Dana Corporation, Gresen Manufacturing and Arctic Cat Enterprises. As a valued employee, Antone was a disciplined, responsible and hard working individual.

When not working, Antone enjoyed traveling throughout the US and Mexico, having acquired the travel bug hopping freight trains to California and Washington to pick fruit when he was a junior in high school.

He also enjoyed his cats, listening to the Swedish rock group ABBA, and driving his beloved Ford Mustang. Especially enjoyable for him was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle to Sturgis and points west. He absolutely loved the freedom he experienced riding his Harley.

After retiring from a successful career, Antone sold his home in Coon Rapids and purchased his parent’s home in Bowlus where he lived since 2005.

Antone will be greatly missed but always remembered by the many family members and friends who knew and loved him over the years.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 12:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls, MN with Father Joe Herzing officiating. Burial took place in the St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery in Little Falls, MN. Kenneth Raymond Miller was born on December 20, 1931 in Hoople, North Dakota to the late Leonard and Rose (Traut) Miller.

He grew up in the Holdingford area and in 1945 the family moved to Little Falls. He was united in marriage to Jeanette L. Wochnick on October 6, 1953 at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Elmdale. After his honorable discharge from the United States Army, Ken returned to Little Falls and begin farming.

He drove truck, worked at Crestliner and did carpentry work all while he farmed. Hobbies he enjoyed were meeting people and

So yeah, you need to keep a separate business account, and preferably a separate checking and savings account on your business. Make sure 100 percent of the income from the business goes into those accounts, and only expenses associated with the business come out of those accounts. With really small side businesses, your checkbook register can almost become a simplified profit and loss statement.

Swanville City August 8, 2017 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, August 8, 2017. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m.with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Jim Molitor, Norm Carlson, Tony Maciej, and Deb Wood. Also present: Mark Hallen, reporter Sheila McCoy, and Lonny Hutchins.

Minutes of the Public Hearing and Swanville City Council meeting held July 5, 2017 were reviewed.

A motion was made by Deb Wood to approve the minutes as printed.

Tony Maciej seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given.

A motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by Norm Carlson to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

City engineer, Mark Hallen, presented council with payment application #2 for the North Berkey Avenue Project. Hallen stated the T at the end of the new road was not completed. Council will have to decide if it should be tarred as in the plans or completed with class 5 gravel. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve payment application #2.

Tony Maciej seconded the motion all members voted in favor, motion carried. Council member Molitor expressed concern with the standing water at the northwest corner of First Street and Berkey Avenue. Council feels this problem should have been addressed at the time when the road was dug up with the North Berkey Avenue project. Mayor Lange also addressed the statement received from Widseth, Smith & Nolting on the North Berkey project. Lange stated the city is paying more than what was quoted in the agreement that was signed at the beginning of the project. Hallen stated he will check into both of these issues and report back to the council.

Councilmember Molitor reported on the street lights for North Berkey Avenue. Molitor feels 6 or 7 light poles would be needed. Council agreed the pole should be at least 12’ tall with a pedestal at the bottom of each pole. The cost was estimated with labor to be $16,000.00. Councilmember Maciej reported he had an estimate of $3,400.00 to replace the bulbs on main street lights with led bulbs. It was decided to table for now the street lights and led bulbs.

Mayor Lange presented council with the Morrison County Comprehensive Local Water Management Plan. After council looked over the plan, Deb Wood made a motion to adopt and implement the Morrison County Comprehensive Local Water Management Plan Resolution #2017-049. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members present voted in favor, motion carried.

by Joseph and Shirley Gessell. The deed states the Gessell’s quit claims their part of the walking trail south of Swanville to the City. Jim Molitor made a motion to accept the quit claims deed. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. The Clerk will have the document recorded.

Mayor Lange presented for council to review a finance procedures and policy plan. It was decided to discuss and adopt at a later date.

Lange also presented from the First State Bank of Swanville a form with the power of accounts listed. It was decide that Councilmember Jim Molitor will be on the signature card to sign in the absence of the Mayor or Clerk/Treasurer. All transactions at the bank will require two signatures.

Mayor Lange also stated that none of the money was recovered from the fraud which occurred in July and the city is still waiting to hear back from the city’s insurance company to see if any of the money will be covered in the loss.

A land use permit was presented from Stu Johnson to build a 32’x36’ garage onto his house on Rhoda Avenue. Planning and Zoning has reviewed the permit and has given approval. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the land use permit. Deb Wood seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Lange stated that Steve Gruber asked for his down payment back on lot 106 in the North Berkey Avenue Addition, Gruber has bought a house in Swanville and longer wishes to build. Council was in agreement to give Gruber the down payment of $500.00 back.

Mayor Lange stated that Mielke Mark LLC would like to purchase lot 106 in the North Berkey Avenue Addition. A check was received for $500.00 as down payment of the lot.

Jim Molitor made a motion to sell lot 106 in the North Berkey Addition to Mielke Mark LLC. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Mayor Lange will inform the city attorney of the sell.

Maintenance worker Lonny stated that the erosion project at the Pillsbury Beach will be covered by

a grant from Todd County to pay for half of the costs and the Swanville Lions will give $10,000.00 toward the project.

Cory DeFoe is interested in selling his property in the North Berkey Avenue Addition to the city. Jim Molitor will research the value of the land, visit with DeFoe and report back to the council.

Mayor Lange passed out a preliminary budget for 2018 for council to look over.

Mayor Lange stated that on Wednesday, August 9 at 6:00 pm there will be a ribbon cutting to open the North Berkey Avenue road. At night a family movie night will be held in the city park.

The Clerk informed council there will be a Swanville Rural Fire Assoc. meeting on Tuesday, August 22 at 8:00 pm. Council will meet at 7:30 pm in the center and move to the fire hall.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the claims. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held at 7:00 pm, Tuesday, September 5, 2017.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Norm Carlson and seconded by Deb Wood to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Meeting adjourned 8:35 pm.

Mayor Lange presented to the council the assessment sheet for the Swanville Rural Fire Association.

The Association is proposing to raise the budget to $50,000.00 for the next year.

The meeting was then moved to the Swanville Fire Hall for the annual meeting where it was passed to raise the budget to $50,000.00 for the 2017-2018 year.

The meeting was adjourned 8:30 pm.

A Look Back, A Look Ahead - By John Young This week I will touch on two topics: one a look back at our first telethon, and the second part looking ahead with a class on learning the basics of Facebook advertising.

If you missed last week’s article, you would need to read that to catch up for this to make sense. You can catch it on the HometownNews.biz website in the past issues area.

The goal as of last week’s article was $5,000 in funds raised with about $10,000 in value with the donated items.

As the week and weekend progressed, more and more items kept coming in!

We started the telethon on Monday night with 57 auction items with a combined value of over $20,000! Figuring that we should be able to get about 50% of value from the silent auction, we were expecting to hit a new target of $10,000.

We opened the silent auction bidding on Sunday to give folks more time to check out the items and make bids. Bidding started out very quickly, and soon we had over 300 bids from DJs from around the world! Initially, we planned to have the auction close during the telethon on Monday night; but with the excessive amount of auction items, we needed more time and decided to extend the closing of the auctions until Tuesday evening. That gave us a bit over two full days for bids to come in and we ended up with a total of nearly 1,000 bids on the different items!

Our running total at the end of the telethon was a bit over $10,000 in auction bids and about $1,800 in cash donations. We planned a wrap-up show Tuesday night to close out the auctions and give final totals. We had a few more bids and donations come in on Tuesday, and we were excited to report a total of $15,774 as our final total of our efforts!

Then, two folks reached out that were bidding on two items that didn’t meet the reserve. They both offered to buy the donated items at the reserve rate, and that pushed us over the $16,000 mark at the time of this writing!! Whoo Hoo.

This class is offered via http://www. smalltowndiy.com/training The live event will be about 90 minutes long and will go through the basics of setting up and promoting a business on Facebook.

If you haven’t played with advertising on Facebook, it is a very powerful tool that can be utilized to reach a massive amount of people for a very reasonable cost per engagement if done properly. It can also be a quick way to throw a lot of money away with little or no results if you don’t have a bit of a plan and understanding about what you are doing.

In this course, we will look at what types of ads to run, how to set up the ads, how to target a specific audience that would have interest in your product and service, and how to keep your marketing dollars working effectively on social media.

The class will start at 7 pm Central. You can participate via computer or mobile device (cell phone or tablet), and you will be sent a link the day of the class to log in and join the event! After the session, you will also have access to the recorded session for future reference.

Thinking about a career in Law Enforcement?

School is now back in session. For high school students, they may be starting to think about career choices after graduation. Some may be thinking about law enforcement, but how do you gain any exposure or knowledge beyond what you might see on TV? The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office has long maintained a youth explorer program for kids interested in careers in the criminal justice world. What exactly is an explorer, you ask? Well, the Explorer Program is an extension of the Boy/Girl Scouts of America and is designed specifically for youth ages 14-21 to explore career fields in which they have interest in. There are many explorer programs in existence; from groups looking at the business world, to firefighting, to law enforcement. At the Sheriff’s Office, as part of the Explorer Post, kids can explore many the different areas and opportunities in the criminal justice world. Past explorers of the Sheriff’s Office have gone onto careers in corrections, probation and law enforcement at local, state and federal levels. Many of the current Stearns Coun-

ty Deputies working today started as explorers with our Explorer Program.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Program has room for up to 30 kids. We start every fall with a new group mixed in with kids from the previous years. The Explorer Program meets every Sunday night and covers various topics.

The program operates year round. During their time, the explorers are certified in first-aid/CPR and they learn numerous aspects of law enforcement; from handcuffing suspects, to responding to emergency calls, and de-escalation techniques.

Through this training they become proficient in the skills used by law enforcement officers. These skills are put to the test once a year in a three day statewide competition held in Rochester, MN. During this competition, they compete against teams from explorer posts from all over the three state area in topics like burglary response, hostage negotiations and traffic stops. They also compete in academic sessions as well as shooting competitions. Another highlight for the explorers is the opportunity to ride with the deputies from the Sheriff’s Office to see what law enforcement is like.

They are in the car for the deputies’ shifts and go to every call. Explorers also are allowed to sit with dispatchers to see the hard work they do. Explorers are called upon to assist in numerous community events such as parades, fundraising walks and other needs of the Sheriff’s Office.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Program is currently in the process of recruiting more kids interested in the law enforcement world. There will be a meeting held on September 10, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. in the basement (EOC) of the Sheriff’s Office. Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen announced the commencement of a Law Enforcement Scholarship program for 2017. The Minnesota Sheriff’s Association has established a scholarship fund for awarding up to fifteen $600.00 scholarships for this year. These scholarships are due to the coordinated efforts of all 87 Sheriff’s in the state of Minnesota.

The members of the MSA understand the financial needs of students attending the Peace Officer Skills Course, or one of the two or four year law enforcement degree colleges across our state. “The Board of Directors feel peace officers in our democratic society have complex duties to perform,” said Sheriff Larsen. MSA recognized the importance of pre-entry training for people considering law enforcement as their career choice. MSA recognizes some students need outside help in meeting the costs of such training, even though they excel academically.

The scholarship committee, in making its selection of awards, intends on achieving representation from all geographical areas of the state. Scholarship awards will be announced by December 30th of this year. Application forms and a statement of procedures are available at the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office. The perfect time to go to school We received a note from Mrs. Jones as she wrapped up the school year. She wrote, “I just wanted to tell you how wonderful it has been to be able to work with Grandma Connie. She has made such a positive impact with the kids in my classroom. Whether it is working individually on sight words with kids that are struggling, or helping in the classroom setting she has been such a help. I have two boys who really struggle academically in their reading. One of the boys only knew 6 sight words at the beginning of the year, and now knows 75. The other boy only knew 8 sight words and now knows 78.

This was amazing progress! I hope that this program will always be in our district, and that Grandma Connie will be able to work in my room again.”

During the 2016-17 school year, 192 volunteers served with Catholic Charities Central MN Foster Grandparent Program.

The group served 134,360 hours, working with 8778 children. Teachers and staff reported that 88% of the students served demonstrated improved math and/ or literacy skills.

Todd County Sheriff’s Office

August 28, 2017: At 08:49 Todd County Sheriff received a call of one vehicle accident rollover that occurred on 200th Street near 243rd Ave., Long Prairie. 53 year old Joseph Leagjeld, rural Long Prairie, was driving a Buick LeSabre eastbound on 200th Street when he struck a parked flat deck trailer in the roadway owned by Lavoie Backhoe Service Inc. from rural Long Prairie. Joseph rolled his Buick LeSabre after going up the ramps of the trailer. Joseph was transported by personal vehicle to the Long Prairie Hospital where he was treated for his injuries. The Buick Lesabre was a total loss.

September 1, 2017: At 20:25 Richard Strassburg of Burtrum reported that sometime between 7:30 am and 6:00 pm someone busted the window on his garage door at his residence. If anyone has information about this incident they are asked to contact the Todd County Sheriffs Office. The incident is currently under investigation.

September 2, 2017: At 16:50 Wayne Schwanke of Grey Eagle reported that he was traveling eastbound on Cty 2 near Saukinac Campground when a deer entered the roadway and he struck it with his vehicle. The vehicle, a 1996 Chevrolet Pickup sustained damage to the driver’s side fender.

Catholic Charities Central MN Foster Grandparent Program offers seniors of all ages, 55 and over, the opportunity to work with students in local schools, or other non-profit agencies where there are children who need extra assistance.

Volunteers are matched with classrooms where they can share their skills and personalities, benefiting the academic and social atmosphere of schools as a whole.

There is a strong intergenerational bond between the senior volunteer and the children they serve.

The Foster Grandparent Program offers many benefits to those who participate, including a tax free reimbursement, transportation reimbursement for mileage or for using a city bus, orientation, on-going training, health benefits and more. The joy of helping children and getting frequent hugs seem to be among the “most mentioned” benefits!
