The brilliance of resilience -By Harvey Mackay Baseball great Babe Ruth struck out 1,330 times over the 22 seasons he played.

“Every strike brings me closer to the next home run,” the Babe said.

And during those same 22 seasons, he hit 714 home runs, a record that stood from 1935 until 1974, when Hank Aaron hit his 715th.

Babe Ruth’s attitude could have been defeatist instead – after all, his mistakes were made in a most public way in front of fans who wanted nothing more than to watch him hit another homer. Instead, he went back to the dugout, refusing to lick his wounds, and prepared for his next at-bat.

That is what I call resilience.

Nearly all the successful people I know have dealt with defeat, slumps, failures, change and adversities of every nature. The reason they are successful in

spite of all that is they had the confidence and courage to face those setbacks and find a way to overcome them. For some, it was pure stubbornness; for others, it was refusal to admit defeat.

I’ve had my share of business challenges, which I have written about frequently. Bear with me while I refresh your memory: I have been in the envelope business for more than 50 years. Do people still use envelopes the same way or as often as they did in the 1960s? Not even close. That was before email, faxes, online bill pay, Facebook, Twitter and all forms of electronic communication. We could have easily closed our doors and given up.

Had we at MackayMitchell Envelope Company decided to live in the past, we would have defied our company motto: “To be in business forever.”

We needed to look at how businesses used our products in their changing environments. We had to retool machinery and retrain employees.

We worked hard to introduce new lines of business and encourage our sales force to think of new ways to best serve our customers. It has been an ongoing process responding to every

technological advance. Our only way forward was to be resilient enough to change with the times.

Because the only thing that never changes is change itself. Today, change comes faster than ever. To survive and thrive, the skill you need to master is resilience.

Susan Dunn, a clinical psychologist, has observed that people who can bounce back after failure and confront new obstacles without losing their nerve generally do these essential things: • Learn from experience. Resilient people reflect on what happens to them – good and bad – so they can move forward without illusion.

• Accept setbacks and losses.

You’ve got to face the reality of what happens in order to get past it.

• Recognize emotions. Resilient people don’t hide from their feelings.

They identify what they’re feeling and express their emotions appropriately.

• Keep time in perspective. Past, present and future are separate. Don’t mix them up by letting what’s in the past determine your choices in the here and now.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Thrashing Rings No, they were not an item of jewelry worn on your finger. They were one of the more fun times of the summer.

A thrashing ring was a group of as many as 8 or 10 local farmers who thrashed their oats together.

One, or more of the farmers owned a thrashing machine.

Most of the farmers could not justify the investment in one of those massive silver machines, so a group made it was more economically sensible. It was not only the cost of the machine, but there was a need to have many men and many horse teams to move the oat bundles from the field to the thrashing location.

The thrashing machine was usually placed near the farmyard and was powered by a quite large tractor with a metal wheel on it’s side called a flywheel. There was a long, heavy, flat belt which connected the tractor to the thrashing machine. A memory of the belt was that when the thrashing machine was put under a heavy load, the belt would slap together making an easily heard slapping sound, which told the guys putting the bundles into the machine to slow down. The very earliest machines required a man to stand on a platform near where the bundles entered the machine, to cut the twine that held the bundles together.

Those loading bundles in the field seemed to have a goal of creating a bigger bundle load than any other bundle loaders. This usually was a two man team. I remember some colorful language flowing from the loaders when the fully loaded wagon hit a rock or hole and the whole side of the load slid off the wagon and back on the field. This required reloading and the loss of some oats that fell out due to the additional handling of the bundles.

When the ring was complete and all of the farmers had thrashed their crops, they were thankful to have the oats safely stored in the granary. They were also full of chicken. It seemed that at every farm they visited, the lades made chicken for the noon meal. Each lady had a favorite special recipe and they seemed to want to make better chicken than any other lady. Lots of really special chicken meals.

There was a break in the work every afternoon for some liquid refreshment, cakes, cookies and bars. These breaks also included the sharing of news, gossip, jokes and general stuff. It made the work a break from the regular farm routine.

In those days you knew your neighbors and could depend on them to be available for assistance if needed.

• Think creatively and flexibly.

Look for new ways to solve problems and face challenges.

• Take care of yourself. Resilience is based on good physical and mental health. Get enough rest, eat sensibly and spend time with people who support you.

• Ask for help. Resilient people don’t try to do everything themselves.

Accept that you’ll need to ask others for assistance, and learn how to do so graciously and effectively.

I can’t think of any business that can’t adapt somehow. Kids who have never seen a manual typewriter are well schooled on computer keyboards. Dial telephones are relics, but how many of us are constantly connected to our smart phones, and can’t function without them?

While Grandma looked forward to the iconic Sears catalog, online shopping provides a 24-hour marketplace. That’s how resilient businesses respond.

Former British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill was also a good example of resilience. He failed sixth grade. He was defeated in every election for public office until he was elected prime minister – at age 62. He famously said, “Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no

But his best known quote was also a rallying cry for resilience: “Never give in, never give in, never, never, never – in nothing, great or small, large or petty – never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.”

Mackay’s Moral: You don’t need a trampoline to be good at bouncing back.

Obituaries Arnold F. “Arnie” Hoeschen Arnold F. “Arnie” Hoeschen, age 90, of Freeport, died peacefully on Sunday, September 2, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:30 a.m.

Friday, September 7 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Robert Rolfes officiating. Rev. Dan Walz, Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B., Rev. Robert Harren, and Rev. Fred Timp, S.V.D. will concelebrate Mass. Interment will be in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Friday at the church in Freeport. Parish prayers will be at 6:30 p.m. and a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening at the church.

Arnold Frank Hoeschen was born July 14, 1928 in Freeport, Minnesota to Hubert and Mary (Barhorst) Hoeschen. After graduating from Melrose High School, he entered the United States Army from 1946 to 1948; serving in Japan. After the military, Arnie attended St. Cloud Business College.

He was united in marriage to Regina Harren on October 5, 1950 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis. On March 15, 1951, Arnie started working at Freeport State Bank where he worked as a banker and insurance agent. He eventually left the

bank in 1989 to work as an insurance agent with Commercial Exchange Corporation in Freeport. He enjoyed bowling, gardening, and was an avid fisherman.

Survivors include his wife, Regina Hoeschen of Freeport; children, Gene (Joan) Hoeschen of Isanti, Fritz (Joyce) Hoeschen of Freeport, Kathy Hoeschen of Long Beach, Mississippi, Ron (Sheila) Hoeschen of Eden Prairie, Tim (Linda) Hoeschen of Port Orchard, Washington, Lee (Joyce) Hoeschen of Mount Vernon, Indiana, and Al (Ruth) Hoeschen of Apple Valley; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren with one due in November; brothers and sisters, Rose Groen of Richfield, Robert Hoeschen of Freeport, and Walter (Alice) Hoeschen of Freeport; and brother-in-law, Al Brodie of Faribault.

Arnie was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Elmer Hoeschen; sister, Dorothy Brodie; brother-in-law, John Groen; and sister-in-law, Donna Hoeschen.

Serving as casket bearers will be Arnie’s sons, Gene, Fritz, Ron, Tim, Lee, and Al Hoeschen. Cross bearer will be Kathy Hoeschen and scripture bearer will be Regina Hoeschen. Honorary bearers will be grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Three Todd County lakes did not meet state standards: Trace, Big Swan, and Moose. Stieber said these waters will be further investigated and a plan will be created to restore water quality. Strategies will also be developed to protect lakes and streams that meet water-quality standards.

An open house on regarding state water quality standards in local streams, rivers, and lakes will be offered on Thursday, September 13th at the Lions Club Building at 405 Degraff Avenue in the Swanville City Park from 7:00-8:30 p.m. for residents of Todd and Morrison counties. Information will be presented by the MPCA and Todd SWCD and there will be an opportunity for questions.

A $30,000 truck doesn’t work with a $50,000 income. So, cash in the bonds immediately, sell the truck, and use some of the money from the EE bonds to pay off the school loans. Then, find yourself a cheap, little truck that will get you around for a few years.

After two years of water sampling and testing the health of the Mississippi River Brainerd Watershed’s lakes and streams, the results are in, and for an overwhelming majority of Todd County’s waters it’s good news.

Out of the 16 lakes and streams tested in Todd County, 12 met or exceeded the state standards of water quality.

That’s 75%, numbers Tim Stieber, Director for Todd County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) wasn’t surprised about.

“Many of the lakes sampled within the watershed are in great shape and these we will continue to work to keep clean,” said Stieber. “Those which did not meet the state standards were not a huge surprise and we will begin efforts to reduce nutrient contributions to these waters.”

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and the local SWCDs have been collecting samples from within the Mississippi River Brainerd Watershed, which covers parts of Crow Wing, Aitkin, Cass, Morrison and Todd counties, including 212 lakes larger than 10 acres, and 2,149 river miles.

Elements studied include water clarity, oxygen, nutrient, and bacteria levels in area lakes, streams, and rivers. MPCA crews also sampled fish using electrofishing equipment and collected invertebrate samples.

“By monitoring the state’s major watersheds it helps to prioritize efforts and to bring them back to water-quality goals,” said Bonnie Finnerty, watershed project manager with the MPCA’s Baxter office. “Having data helps to support the conversations and provides a goal-focused context for people to work together.”

Rick Krauel has been a member of Todd County’s Long Lake Improvement Association for 21 years and its president for 16 years. Long Lake met the state water quality standards.

“We’ve been continually monitoring Long Lake for the last 30 years,” said Krauel. “Since the late 1990s, we’ve performed secchi disk tests for water clarity. We also test for phosphorus,

By Steve Richter, Swanville Lions At a recent Swanville Lions Club meeting, also attended by members of local American Legion and VFW Clubs, the Morrison County Sheriff’s Department demonstrated drones it purchased with donations from the three groups.

Neil Hagstrom, Lions Club and American Legion member, reminded the group that the combined $15,000 donation was made in memory of Duane Johnson, longtime Lions secretary, Legion member and Morrison County Commissioner who died in October 2017. Hagstrom followed up on Johnson’s suggested Lions project to provide the latest in search and rescue equipment for the county.

Hagstrom contacted Sheriff Shawn Larsen, who said his department had considered such a purchase but didn’t have available funds. The clubs approved drone purchases by January.

At the Lions meeting, Larsen and Deputy Jake Heffron discussed how two larger drones and a smaller one have already been used six times since early summer. Uses include searching for missing residents, fugitive searches and water rescues, among others.

Larsen and Heffron said two larger

units will do the main emergency work while the smaller drone will be used for training. Accessories include an infrared camera that costs $8,500 alone.

The department saved training expenses because Heffron is already a certified drone and commercial pilot and can train others in the department.

Hopefully that will help them save a little on repairs also. The sway bar end links connect the end of the vehicles anti-roll or sway bar to the vehicles suspension. The ends look similar to a trailer hitch ball and if it becomes worn the joint will make a considerable amount of noise as it is transferred to the body. This sound is a clunk which can best be heard when driving across a parking lot or in town over very small bumps where the body shifts a lot. These parts are not usually real expensive but can be labor intensive if they are rusted in place. It sounds like you have had a lot of suspension work done looking for a noise. The sway bar links are one of the first things we look at in our shop and cheap compared to struts. Talk with your shop about why they weren’t noticed.

Nicole Bjerke Wins National Philanthropy Award N i c o l e Bjerke, CentraCare Health— Long Prairie, has been included in the inaugural Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP) Forty Under 40 list.

The Forty Under 40 program is designed to recognize the future leaders within the health care philanthropy community.

AHP is honoring these 40 young professionals because they are shaping the future of the health care development industry.

Bjerke, a Senior Development Officer for CentraCare Health’s Foundation, successfully secured over $3.2 million

to support the building of a new medical campus, significantly surpassing the initial fundraising goal of $2 million.

She also successfully carried a funding request to the Minnesota Legislature in 2018 securing $700,000 through the state bonding bill toward the Regional Community Well-Being Center.

Stearns County Sheriff’s News On Saturday morning, August 25th, the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office took several reports of thefts from vehicles.

The victims reported the thefts had taken place sometime overnight. Some of the items taken were a pair of binoculars, a pack of Marlboro cigarettes, a Solocam Bow in a Plano brand case with 7 arrows, a Simmons laser range finder, $80.00 cash, a checkbook and wallet and a large amount of power tools. The most worrisome items that were taken were two .22 caliber guns and one .40 caliber handgun. All of the items were stolen from unlocked vehicles or in one case the open bed of a truck.

Deputies gathered the information and spoke to several parties they thought may have pertinent information about the thefts. Later in the week on August 29th at 5:40 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office received the report of suspicious activity in the 900 block of 3rd Street in the City of Holdingford. The caller was reporting a car had been left on the road and he saw two people exit the vehicle and take off running. Deputy Aaron Wells responded and located the vehicle. He was also able to identify the direction the two people ran and where they possibly went. Several other officers responded to the area along with Deputy Laura McLaughlin and her K9 partner Freddie. Freddie picked up a scent from the vehicle and tracked it to where the suspects were. Deputy Eric Schultz and his K9 partner Aspen verified the track. Meanwhile, Deputy Wells

determined the car left on the road had been stolen in Morrison County. That vehicle was processed for evidence and returned to the owner.

While all of this was going on, two reports of thefts from vehicles were reported to the Albany Police Department.

Deputies continued to investigate and were able to obtain information that linked the suspects to the Albany theft, a burglary in Benton County and several stolen vehicles in the surrounding communities. A search warrant was later executed at the residence where the suspects were located and evidence was recovered. The suspects, who are juveniles, were detained and later placed in secure detention.

Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Investigators will continue to work on this matter and the related cases in neighboring jurisdictions. We want to thank the alert citizen who reported the suspicious activity on Wednesday morning.

Without that timely information, we would not have had the successful outcome that we did. We would also like to remind everyone to lock your vehicles. Even in small town Stearns County these things happen. Locking and securing your valuables will hopefully prevent this type of activity. This is extra important when it comes to storing or leaving firearms in a vehicle.

Swanville City August 7, 2018 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, August 7, 2018. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m.with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Norm Carlson, Deb Wood, Jim Molitor and Tony Maciej. Also present: Diane Piekarski, Representatives from Moore Engineering, Steve Browning, reporter Sheila McCoy, and Lonny Hutchins.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held Tuesday, July 10, 2018 were reviewed. A motion was made by Tony Maciej to approve the minutes as printed. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Norm Carlson and seconded by Tony Maciej to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Council discussed with representatives from Moore Engineering about using their services and the cost associated with services. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to have Moore Engineering write up a master service agreement and have the city attorney look the agreement over and when this document is okayed by the attorney have Moore Engineering as the city’s Engineer service. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Diane Piekarski was present to inform the council the grass is cut up and around the water tower which will make it easier to measure the land needed for the new

water tower. Council asked the Moore Representatives to look over the land and report to the council where they feel would be the best spot for the new water tower and how much land would be needed.

City maintenance worker Lonny reported the curb and gutter by the school on DeGraff Avenue is being redone. This should take care of the snow thawing and running water problem in front of the school. Lonny reported that the undercarriage of the city dump truck should be redone. Sandblast and painted should be appox. $2500.00.

Council was in agreement to have the under carriage done. Lonny stated he would like to start a compost pile in the Industrial Park.

Council agreed. Last on Lonny’s list was the air conditioner unit at the park building needs to be replaced. After discussion, council agreed to replace the unit.

There was discussion on naming the land by the North Berkey Addition. After discussion it was decided to name the park “Springbrook Park.” Lonny will be cutting the grass and brush around the area.

Mayor Lange presented to the council a letter from the Initiative Foundation requesting the council to consider a contribution for 2019. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to contribute in 2019 - $700.00 to the Initiative Foundation. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried The Clerk informed council there will be a Swanville Rural Fire Assoc. meeting on Tuesday, August 28 at 8:00 pm. Council will meet at 7:30pm in the center and move to the fire hall.

September 5, 2018: At 0029 hours the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a one vehicle rollover accident. Driver, Joseph Michael Gerads, age 55, was traveling eastbound on County Road 186 near Sherwood Road in Grove Township. Gerads lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle went into the ditch on the north side of the road. Gerads over corrected and rolled the vehicle three times before hitting the cement barrier on the Sauk River Bridge. The vehicle came to rest on the bridge deck upright. Gerads sustained non-life-threatening injuries from the crash and was transported via ambulance to the Melrose Hospital. Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor.

The crash is under investigation by the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Melrose Fire Department and Melrose Ambulance Service.

CentraCare Health expands access to care with 24/7 phone and video visits

Getting timely care for a variety of medical ailments in central Minnesota just got a lot easier.

CentraCare Health has expanded its popular CentraCare eClinic to include phone and video appointments.

The new remote care options were added to build in more convenient and less costly access to CentraCare Health clinicians.

“These new services give our patients and families more ways to get the right level of care at the right time,” said Sean Wherry, MD, eClinic Physician Leader. “So instead of warming up the car in the middle of the night in January to drive a child with an earache into one of our emergency departments, a parent can get the help they need with a phone call or an online video visit.”

CentraCare eClinic services can be accessed on any device that has an internet connection, including computers, tablets, and mobile phones. Phone and video visits cost $45, not including prescription costs. CentraCare eClinic is available 24 hours per day, seven days a week. Most visits take 15 minutes or less.

CentraCare Health serves a wide geography with many patients living in small towns or rural areas. The system includes more than 35 clinics and specialty care centers, plus hospitals in St. Cloud, Monticello, Long Prairie, Melrose, Paynesville, Sauk Centre and Willmar. As the dominant care provider in the region, reducing barriers to care is an ongoing challenge.

“Many of our patients who live in

small communities or rural areas had to rely on emergency room treatment during off-hours or on the weekends,” said Kelly Macken-Marble, Vice President of Ambulatory Services and Population Health. “That’s an expensive way to get care for conditions that are normally treated in the clinic.”

Patients who choose phone or video visits through CentraCare eClinic will speak live with a CentraCare clinician, typically a certified nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant.

Online visits, which have been available since 2014, will continue to be offered for $25. Patients who choose an online visit will log into a secure website and answer a series of ques-

tions about their symptoms and medical history. Depending on the diagnosis, patients receive care instructions and/or a prescription.

All three video options – video, phone or online – are designed to provide care for a host of conditions, including the flu, sinus infection, pink eye or diaper rash.

CentraCare eClinic visits are available anytime online on centracare.com/ eclinic. CentraCare Health offers other in-person care options for evenings and weekends, including the CentraCare Urgency Center, in St. Cloud. Patients can also chat live with a registered nurse or schedule an appointment at CentraCare Connect.

students received free books to take home over the summer, as part of a literacy program by Bookshelf Builders Initiative and Minnesota Reading Corps. Each first through third grade student who participated in the Reading Corps program last year, received a free set of books to keep in a backpack.

Bookshelf Builders Initiative will distribute 220,000 books this year to about 15,000 children nationwide.

The goal is the help children learn to read, and then learn to love reading. This will provide them with opportunities to read and be read to outside of school.

Bookshelf Builders initiative, the Innovative Approaches to Literacy (IAL) Grant and Minnesota Reading Corps is made possible through a $3,519,751 Innovative Approaches to Literacy (IAL) Grant from the U.S. Department of Education to Reading Corps. The grand total for two years has been $6,101,561. The IAL grant is aimed at developing and improving literacy skills for children in high-need areas, directing resources to communities that need them most such as districts with high poverty rates and/or small rural schools. It supports innovative programs that promote early literacy for young children, motivate older children to read, and increase student achievement by using school libraries and media centers as partners to improve literacy.

Reading Corps is an early literacy program that combines the people power of AmeriCorps with data-driven instruction to help children, age 3 to grade 3, become proficient readers by the end of third grade.

In addition to book distribution, this grant through IAL will enable Reading Corps to partner with school library personnel to share the program’s current family engagement practices. The two year IAL grant will also fund a pilot for high-need schools and additional research on the model’s effectiveness.

Federal funding from the U. S. Department of Education and the Corporation for National and Community Service accounts for 100 percent of the total annual cost ($713,000) of the Bookshelf Builders initiative.

IAL grants totaling more than $26 million were awarded to 29 grantees focused on improving high-quality literacy programs for children in PreK – 12th grade. Reading & Math, Inc., which manages the Reading Corps program, is one of only three national nonprofits awarded funding through IAL in 2017.
