As Americans, we had overwhelming reasons to be proud of our top-flight athletes, even when they didn’t bring home medals. Anyone who viewed the events, either at home or in person, couldn’t help but be impressed.

As a delighted spectator, I can say that I also had Olympic dreams. And mine came true. Again.

I have been attending every summer Olympics for 40 years. And I think the 17 days my wife and I spent in London were probably the most electrifying of all. I have watched athletes young and old exhibit a level of concentration and dedication that astonishes me. And I always learn a thing or two, frequently not related to sports.

For me, the Olympics are a metaphor for how to succeed in life and business.

Of the 40 events we attended, these were my favorites: • Persistence will win the day. When 15-year-old Katie Ledecky dove in for the 800-meter freestyle race, she was hardly the favorite. Commentators feared she had too fast a start and wouldn’t be able to sustain her lead. All she knew was that

she was swimming the race of her young life. The youngest member of the American Olympic delegation had to swim for a half-mile and maintain an exhausting pace to beat the crowd favorite, Great Britain’s Rebecca Adlington. And she looked fabulous with a gold medal draped around her neck.

• Teamwork is essential for success.

The USA men’s basketball team of elite all-stars are accustomed to being the center of attention on their NBA teams. They spend their regular seasons trying to beat each other on their opposing teams. In order to defeat Spain for the gold, they had to contain their egos and deliver their best efforts - together. As they mounted the awards platform with arms linked, they demonstrated their commitment to teamwork and to their country.

• Follow your passion. Misty MayTreanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings had already won gold at the last two Olympics in beach volleyball, and contemplated whether the London games were in their future. But despite the other plans each pursued, the Olympics were never far away from their thoughts.

• Work as hard as you can, then work harder. The games are full of stories of athletes who defied all odds to be able to compete. What could be more inspiring than watching South African sprinter Oscar Pistorius, whose lower legs were amputated before his first birthday? To me, this was without question the most amazing event to watch.

• You are the only one who can limit your potential. Michael Phelps got off to a disappointing start, finishing fourth in an event that he should have dominated. Was that a wakeup call for the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time? He came

shining through, medaling in the rest of his events. He is the proud owner of a record 22 Olympic medals, 18 of them gold.

• Set goals. Usain Bolt was defeated in Jamaica’s Olympic finals in June, so he rededicated himself and became the greatest sprinter in Olympic history. He won the 100 meter and 200 meter races and anchored the men’s 4x100 meter relay, which set a world record.

• Visualize your dreams. The Fab Five of women’s gymnastics had a huge challenge against the Russian team. They knew that a single misstep could end their dreams. These athletes are too young to remember when the USA last won women’s gymnastics gold in 1996. But they all spoke of being inspired by the 2004 Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

• You’ve gotta have a little fun. The pageantry of the opening and closing ceremonies was magnificent, but is it really necessary? Absolutely! These celebrations are gigantic, larger-than-life events that are meticulously choreographed and executed to make sure everyone is having a great time. As much as I love the athletic competitions, I wouldn’t miss these two extravaganzas.

Isaiah R. Lewis

Obituaries Dolores Louise Ramler Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Dolores Louise Ramler, age 88 of Albany will be 11 AM, Saturday, September 8th, 2012 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Father Michael Naughton O.S.B. will officiate, and burial will take place in the parish cemetery following the service. Dolores died peacefully at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany Monday afternoon surrounded by her family.

There will be a visitation at Seven Dolors Catholic Church Friday evening from 4 to 8 PM and again from 10 AM until the time of the service Saturday morning once again at the church. Parish prayers will take place at 4 PM followed by the Christian Mothers praying the rosary at 5 PM Friday evening at the church.

Dolores was born January 26th, 1924 to Frank and Laura (Gresser) Habermann in St. Anthony. She married Ambrose Ramler on June 2nd, 1945 in St. Anthony.

She lived nearly her entire life in the

Albany area where she not only worked as a mother and home-maker raising her five children but also worked for the family operated Ramler Trucking business as the book-keeper. Dolores often volunteered with the Albany Senior Center, the Meals on Wheels program, Mother Seton, and worked many years as a cook for annual church bazaars. Dolores was a member of the Nursing Home Auxiliary, Albany Legion Auxiliary, and the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary. She was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany where she was also an active member of the Christian Mothers.

Dolores is survived by her children Genell (Larry) Carter, Maple Lake; Laura (Joe) Backes, Spicer; Linda (Dave) Finken, Upsala; Jack (Doris) Ramler, Albany; Greg (Sue) Ramler, Albany; her ten grandchildren, her twenty one great-grandchildren, her siblings Donald Haberaman, CT; and Lucille (Ralph) Goenner, Clear Lake.

She is preceded in death by her mother and father Frank and Laura Habermann, her husband Ambrose Ramler who passed in 1994, her son Leon Ramler who passed at the age of 8, her brother Herbert Habermann, and her sister Bertha Lang.

Arrangements are being made with the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home of Albany.

TOPS Sponsors Walk in the Park Grey Eagle 1595 Chapter of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) will sponsor a walk with TOPS in the local Lions Park. The event will be Tuesday, Sept.

Isaiah R. Lewis, age 12 of Melrose, died unexpectedly after a brief illness on Thursday, August 30, 2012 at the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical College in Richmond, Virginia, while visiting his

grandparents.

Isaiah Raheim Lewis was born December 6, 1999 in Melrose, Minnesota to Raheim and Cara (Degeest) Lewis. He was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose and was looking forward to starting confirmation classes. Isaiah knew God and loved God very much. He completed through the sixth grade at the

Melrose Public School. Isaiah was full of life - he loved everybody and everything.

He enjoyed art, music, science and nature.

Isaiah had a wonderful sense of humor and was a jokester - he loved making people laugh... and knew how to push people’s buttons too. He loved chocolate and grandma’s crazy cake. Isaiah was an extremely loving person who was able to see the good in everyone.

Welle receives Education Minnesota Endorsement for House District 9B Upon screening of candidates who have filed for House District 9B, Education Minnesota has issued endorsement to DFL candidate Adrian Welle of Pierz.

Education Minnesota bases its endorsement on the candidate’s support of education and labor issues and showing a well-organized campaign.

Adrian Welle was endorsed for MN Representative District 9B, which includes most of Morrison County and parts of Todd County. Welle currently serves as a Pierz City Councilmember and City Clerk/Treasurer for the City of Upsala. He is a lifelong resident of Morrison County and currently resides in the

city of Pierz.

Upon hearing of his endorsement Welle talked about the struggles in Education, and funding formulas in rural education. He talked about the importance of sending representatives to the state capitol who are willing to fight for rural Minnesota and rural Minnesota schools.

“This election is crucial to send representation to the state capitol that understand that the children of this great state are our future leaders,” said Welle; “It is time for our schools to be repaid the money that last year’s legislature striped from Education.”

Compelled to Sell -By Saralee Perel

– I will not bid.

I give myself a pep talk. “You don’t need more things.” And then I add, “If your husband Bob finds out you are bidding again, he’ll start on one of his incessant talks you never listen to.”

I courageously repeat my mantra. “Just for today – I will not bid.”

“Instead,” I close my eyes and chant softly, “I will sell.”

And so is the odyssey of my compulsion to sell everything I can get my hands on when Bob isn’t looking.

Some might say that I’m just replacing one addiction with another. And I say, “Oh, really?”

Last week I was looking for the innards to our chrome deco coffee pot. “You haven’t used this in ten years,” I said to Bob. “But I like it.”

“Sweetheart,” I sidled up to him and in my best siren voice whispered, “Let’s sell it.

It’s just taking up space.”

“But if I say ‘yes’ to that, you’ll sell all the old coffee tins.”

“No, I will not.” This wasn’t technically a lie. I had already sold them.

Making money on eBay is like having your private rummage sale every day. But there have been some surprises.

“What on earth was my mother thinking when she bought this?” I said to myself. I was looking at a tacky plate with a picture of a couple of people riding camels in the desert. On the back of the plate were the words Royal Doulton. I put it up for sale with a minimum bid of ten dollars. It sold for three hundred fifty.

There’s certain lingo to learn if you join the eBay crowd. Bob and I were in the basement where I found my mother’s small ster-

ling silver appetizer forks. They were in their original box. “Hey!” I shouted at Bob. “This is mib!”

“What the heck is a mib?”

“It means it’s in mint condition and it’s still in its box. Mint in box!” I looked at him and shook my head. “What else on earth could it possibly mean?”

He slapped his forehead. “Of course.” he said. He unwrapped a broken glass vase.

“And this is poc.”

I looked at him questioningly.

“Piece of crap.”

Now, eBay has a great system for keeping sellers honest. It’s called Feedback. Buyers leave feedback regarding sellers’ items and the sellers themselves. So before you buy something, you check the seller’s feedback to make sure their reputation’s ok. This isn’t good for insecure people like me who spend an inordinate amount of time in the approval seeking mode.

The days when I receive feedback that says, “Good item. Nice seller,” I skip my Prozac. Once when I got feedback that said, “Excellent item. This seller is an eBay gem,” I cancelled all my therapy appointments for the whole week.

Of course this can go the other way.

I’ve sold hundreds of items. However, one person was not pleased. But that’s all I needed to revert back to the time when nobody liked me and I was constantly teased. In addition to this occurring when I was thirtyeight, it happened when I was nine or so.

The item was a green FireKing candy dish. I didn’t realize there was a chip in it.

“I’m not happy,” the buyer emailed.

“That chip did not occur during shipping. It was there all along.”

“I never saw the chip,” I emailed back, which was my inner child begging, “Please like me.”

“It’s the size of a fingernail!” she wrote back, and continued to suggest I knew it was there all along and was trying to cheat her.

And then came the ultimate threat, “If you don’t put a money order in tomorrow’s mail,” she said, “I’m going to leave . . . .”

“Oh no,” I thought. “Here it comes.”

“NEGATIVE FEEDBACK.” I started crying and called out to Bob.

“She hates me.” He handed me some Kleenex.

“Are you going to send her money back?”

“Of course.”

“Then forget about it. There are always going to be people who are nasty.”

I called information and got the number for the psychiatrist I saw nearly forty years ago in graduate school, but it turned out he was dead.

Being an eBay seller is like having your own little community right in your computer.

You chat back and forth with lots of people.

And someone’s always there to listen, day or night.

Last week, I got the lecture from Bob I’ve been expecting all along.

“You’re using eBay as a substitute for real life,” he said.

“No, I’m not,” I said defensively. “This is better than real life. At three in the morning, I’m making money. And I’m in my pajamas.”

“You’re still in those pajamas at three in the afternoon and you’re doing the same thing.” He looked around the living room.

His gaze stopped on the empty shelves on either side of the fireplace. “We used to have nice things.”

I hung my head, feeling guilty.

“And now you’ve sold them.”

“I’m . . . sorry, Bob. I can’t help it. It’s a genetic disease. They’ve done studies on it.

I’ve got an extra chromosome or something.”

So, as you have probably predicted, I needed to hit bottom.

And I did.

Yesterday, I desperately looked around the house trying to find an antique still remaining that I could sell. I tore through cupboards like a crazy person. I emptied the closets. I flew through all the sheets in the hallway cabinets, wildly throwing pillow cases behind me. By noon, I was in a sweat. My hands were shaking and I began to hallucinate. I imagined Noritake china everywhere, just waiting for me to grab and sell. But when I’d reach for it, it wasn’t there.

Then I realized that Bob was standing behind me.

“You’re sick,” he said.

“I know.” I fell into his arms, and wept in hysterics. “Help me.”

“I can’t help you until you decide to help yourself.”

“I’m ready,” I sobbed.

“Good. Now you’ve taken the first important step. You’ve acknowledged your problem.”

“Yes! Oh yes, Bob! I have!”

And as we snuggled together on the floor, he took both my hands in his and said, “You’ll be fine now.”

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

With the opening of the early goose season on Labor Day weekend, the geese around my farm in central Pope County did what they’ve done for several years now; namely, they disappear a few days before the season gets underway.

It’s like clockwork; the “honkers” return in early spring, lay their eggs and raise their brood, and eat conveniently located soybeans during summer months. When they are able to fly once again, they go out and glean area wheat fields after those acres are harvested. Then, for the most part, the birds leave. When this pattern was first noticed years ago, it could have been coincidence. But it’s happened every year since.

of food. It could be small grain fields further north where harvest is later, sweet corn fields in other areas of the state, or where ever there’s an available food source.

I visited with DNR officials a couple years ago, asking them about the possibility of an earlier season. I was basically told that setting seasons for waterfowl is more a federal matter, and the dates couldn’t be altered. However, visiting with an avid hunter at one of our county fairs this summer lent new light on the subject. He told of an early, resident-only season this year in both Dakotas, beginning in mid-August.

The idea was to lower the number of resident geese, those who eat farmers’ crops all summer. The bag limit was high enough so that it could make a real difference.

I again contacted the DNR and, yes, they were aware of the early season in the Dakotas. And, according to Ed Boggess of the DNR, the west-central part of Minnesota is where most goose complaints were originating. He said they were working on an earlier season for our part of the state, possibly as soon as next year.

With the current high price of commodities, on average it would take just under two acres of destroyed soybeans to total around $1,000 in damages. Those kinds of losses have been occurring for years. And when the geese eat the young soybean plants, a patch of weeds usually grows up to take their place.

Enjoyed the field day Aug. 29 at the farm of Pete Ruegemer, located northeast of Villard. It’s truly a family operation, with several of Pete’s and Anita’s children now part of the operation. And what an impressive operation it is! The Ruegemers operate an organic farm, raising corn and alfalfa for their dairy operation, which is also organic.

A new barn, put into service in March of last year, is home to their herd of approximately 130 cows and two robotic milking systems. Located side by side, the two systems clean the cows’ udders and complete the entire milking operation as the animals contentedly eat their feed. Identification

My friend asked his date, “Do you think that you could learn to love me?”

Local Municipality Minutes Grey Eagle City August 21, 2012 These are unapproved minutes.

The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Jim Gohman at 7:00 p.m., on the 21st day of August, 2012 in council chambers.

Council members present were Andrea Kraska, Thom Muellner, Joe Arnzen and Dennis Barrett.

There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were guests Mike Aksamit, Bob Lefavor, Allan Beilke, Dennis Bacon, Walter Hoppe, Danny Mason, Walter Hoppe III, Dave Blaeser, Andy Bartkowicz and Lori Hellmann.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Joe Arnzen to approve the minutes of the July 10, 2012 meeting with the following change: page 1411, item 2 of the Mayor’s update, change That to The. A second was made by Andrea Kraska and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Bob Lefavor, Mike Aksamit and Allan Beilke addressed the Council regarding an easement to the back end of the Allan Beilke property. Many years ago Allan Beilke obtained an easement from the school for access to the back lot. The school has since been sold to Bob Lefavor and the existing bus garage is being sold to Aksamit Bus Service to continue to house school buses. Bob and Mike are willing to relocate the Beilke easement; however a small portion of the proposed easement would include a portion that the City now owns.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve an access/utility easement for Allan Beilke on the northwest corner upon review by the City Attorney, at no cost to the City.

A second was made by Joe Arnzen and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Dennis Bacon was in attendance to discuss the 2011 Audit.

Dennis reported that the City’s finances are in good shape, but that the Council needs to monitor the water and sewer rates to keep those fund balances from operating with a negative balance. Dennis was happy to see that all council members sign off on the bills each month and would like to remind them to continue this practice as well as to monitor bank reconciliations on a regular basis.

A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to approve the 2011 audit as submitted. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

There was no water/wastewater report.

The following maintenance

items were discussed: 1. Got everything ready for GEM Fest without any complications.

2. Matt was onsite when the sewer service line repair was done at Vance Johnson’s. Andy will continue to work with Matt to become more comfortable with the water and sewer utilities.

3. Andy will be attending a wastewater training session in Sleepy Eye on September 6, 2012, for which he will earn 6 certification hours. There is no fee for attending this training session.

4. The signs that were on the old fire hall doors were discussed.

The signs are in poor condition and since similar signs are posted in various other locations they will not be replaced.

5. The Council discussed winter snow removal. Dave Blaeser will work on call as needed. Herdering prefers not to take over City street plowing but would be willing to help out. Andy was instructed to check with neighboring communities to find out where they purchased the wings for their plow trucks along with costs and report at the September meeting. The Clerk was instructed to start work on the snow removal contract with Herdering.

The Council discussed the Bass Lake boat ramp. The DNR supplied the new cement planks that will be used on the project. Erv Herdering submitted an estimated cost to make the necessary improvements at $2,500. This estimate is dependent on how much rock or gravel will be used during the course of the project. The Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club donated money to make the necessary improvements to the boat ramp. It was also reported that one of the float tubes on the pier will need to be replaced. The DNR would make those repairs at no cost to the City. Dennis Barrett will work with Tryg Hanson from the DNR on this project.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve hiring Herdering Inc to do the work on the Bass Lake boat ramp. A second was made

by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Joe Arnzen to approve the building permit application for Dennis Barrett to remove his existing garage and to replace it with a 24 x 32 garage with steel siding, cement slab, shingles and a twelve foot apron in the front of the garage. A second was made

by Andrea Kraska and upon a roll call vote the following voted in favor: Thom Muellner, Andrea Kraska, Joe Arnzen and Jim Gohman.

Dennis Barrett abstained. Motion carried.

A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to approve a demolition permit to remove the house on the Jon Rosenow property, with the water and sewer service lines to

be capped. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Joe Arnzen to approve a temporary liquor license for the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club for September 3, 2012. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The Council discussed a donation request from Experienced Works. During the past couple of years the City has had an added employee thanks to this program at no cost to the City. Last year the council donated $100 to Experienced Works. The Council also discussed a donation request from the Initiative Foundation. In the past, the City has been involved in the Healthy Community Partnership Program and has been the recipient of grant money that has paid for fundraising efforts to purchase the four garbage cans on the two blocks of our main street as well as fees for the proposed RV Park project.

A motion was made by Andrea Kraska to approve a donation of $100 to Experienced Works. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to donate $225 to the Initiative Foundation. A second was made by Joe Arnzen and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The council discussed the purchase of two lap top computers and a wireless printer for the City. One computer would be used by the Fire Department for submitting reports to the State of Minnesota and the other computer would be used to do online water and wastewater reporting. The clerk was instructed to look at costs and report at the next meeting.

The clerk was instructed to send property clean up letters.

The Clerk reminded the Council that the 2013 proposed budget needs to be approved at the September meeting. Figures and being finalized and should be delivered to the Council within the next week to allow ample time for the Council to review prior to that meeting.

A motion was made by Joe Arnzen to approve the various fund transfers as follows: $768.36 from the Fire Fund to the Fire Hall debt service fund, $110.00 from the sewer fund to the Sewer Rehab Fund, and $71.69 of which $16.69 goes to the Water Fund and $55 goes to the Sewer Fund for Fire Hall and Library utilities. Lori Hellmann, Clerk Swanville City August 7, 2012 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Senior Center on Tuesday, August 7, 2012. The meeting was called to order at 7:30p.m.with the following members present: Sandy Peterson, Jim Molitor, and Jim Piekarski Absent: Julie Hollermann, AJ Johnson, and Tim Grittner. Also Present: Mark Hallen, Tim Churchwell, Reporter Liz Verley, and Brian Zapzalka.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held July 3, 2012 were read. Jim Piekarski made a motion to accept the minutes as read. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given.

A motion was made by Jim Piekarski and seconded by Jim Molitor to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

City Attorney, Tim Churchwell, was present to discuss with council about selling Lot 30 in Forest Hill Lane. Churchwell advised the council if the lot is sold, there would need to be some stipulations on the sell of the property which would carry with the lot if sold by the original buyer. The first would be any driveway through the lot would need to be paved, second, if more than one home owner would be using lot 30 as a passage to their property, the adjacent property would need to be annexed into the city and the township would have to be notified when the property is sold of this condition and three, no heavy equipment, such as logging equipment, can enter the adjacent property through lot 30. Mayor Peterson made a motion to have these stipulations attached to the sell of lot 30 in Forest Hill Lane.

Jim Piekarski seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried. Jim Molitor made a motion to sell the lot for $5000.00 which would include the sell of the lot and the assessment on the land.

Churchwell also stated he is working on annexing to the city the property that was newly acquired by the school to have another softball field made. Mayor Peterson stated she attended Burnhamville Township meeting. The township did not have a problem with the property being annexed into the city, just as long as the property does not become residential.

Mark Hallen, city engineer, was present and gave a report on the well controller and switches that will be installed soon.

Central Tank Coating did a paint touch up on the interior and the exterior of the water tower.

They also put in a frost free vent and other updates in the amount of $7,900.00. They also advised the council to budget $40 to $45,000.00 to have a complete interior and exterior paint job within the next 3 to 5 years. Mark Hallen suggested the city have an independent company come in and evaluate the tower to see if it is in fact worth doing that extensive of repairs.

Camping by Lake Pepin access was discussed. No action will be taken at this time. Tabled A contract for a $1.35 a gallon for propane was presented from Rahn’s Oil. It was decided to have

the Mayor sign the contract for the next heating season.

A request was read from the Initiative Foundation asking for support from the City once again.

After discussion Jim Molitor made a motion to contribute to the foundation $600.00 in 2013. Jim Piekarski seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The mural on the wall in the community center is now finished.

Artist Nancy Leasman donated some of her time and Diane Borgert and Lowell Drager paid for the rest of the cost. Diane was wondering if a trim board could be put up to protect the wall from chair damage. Council thought a trim board could be added for not more than $50.00. Mayor Peterson stated she would like to have a plaque made for Diane Borgert for her 25 years of service as city librarian, council agreed.

A land use permit was presented from Carol Dold. She would like to add a 7’x16’ well cover to her existing shed. Jim Piekarski made a motion to give the land use permit to Dold if it meets the setbacks required by the city. Brian will check into it to make sure. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The city maintenance man presented the council with an estimate from Tri-City paving to redo the tarring on Springbook Drive. Council will further discuss the resurfacing when another quote is received.

It was decided that a letter needs to be sent to the resident on Fourth Street that dug up the tar when repairing the sewer line going to the resident’s house. The council requests that the road is tarred

by October 1, 2012 or the city will repair the road and put the cost of the repair on the resident’s property taxes.

The Mayor stated she is getting complaints that the JennieO Mill is producing a lot of dust. Council will review the contract which stated JennieO installed a new vacuum system at the next meeting.

The annual Swanville Rural Fire Association meeting is set for August 28, 2012 at 8:00 p.m. Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the senior center and then recess to go to the fire hall to discuss the annual budget.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the Council were furnished with a listing. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the claims. Jim Piekarski seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next monthly meeting will be held September 4, 2012, at 7:30 p.m.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Jim Piekarski and seconded by Jim Molitor to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Meeting adjourned 9:15 p.m.

The Holdingford’s Soldiers Shrine celebrates 70 years

By Michelle Kiley, Holdingford The Soldiers Shrine in Holdingford Celebrates its 70th anniversary on Sunday, September 9th with a 2:00 Mass (at the Shrine along from AS-St. Hedwig’s church- bring a lawn chair/ at All Saints-St. Hedwig’s Church in case of rain) presided by Father Greg Mastey. A reception will follow in the All Saints-St. Hedwig’s Church Basement.

We invite all military, American Legion and VFW members to celebrate. This Shrine was dedicated on September 6th, 1942 as the very first WWII shrine in the United States built to honor those who served in the United States Armed Forces. An estimated 5,000 attended its dedication in 1942.

The History of the Soldiers Shrine of Holdingford: On September 6, 1942, Holdingford, Minnesota dedicated the nation’s first shrine built to honor those who served in the United States Armed Forces, WWII, both abroad and at home. Dubbed as the largest and most spectacular religious event in the history of Holdingford, an estimated five thousand people were in attendance. The day’s ceremonies were opened by a town parade during which two flights of Taylor Cub Airplanes flew in low formation over the line of march and dipped their wings in salute to the Flag.

Gilbert Winkleman, O.S.B, Dean of the School of Architecture at St. John’s University; Charles Brenny, Mayor of Holdingford; Dr. E. J. Schmitz, master-of-ceremonies, and Father J. Kromolicki pastor of St. Hedwig’s Church.

Harold E. Stassen, then Governor of Minnesota gave praise to the countless volunteers making Father J. Kromolicki’s vision a reality and stated that, “ The nation must hold true to the basic rights and precepts given them by God or a just peace would be but a vain hope. America with its grand freedom and its love of justice and truth must take the lead in obtaining a just and lasting peace and not merely an armistice.”

Fred Schilpin paid tribute to Father Kromolicki, pastor of St. Hedwig’s Church, for his vision and dedication to seeing this undertaking materialize. “This beautiful community’s Soldiers’ Shrine is the expression his love and the love of all the people of Holdingford, Stearns County and central Minnesota for the defenders of democracy everywhere.” And in speaking of the shrine he stated that, “ It will stand through the years as a loving patriotic tribute and a physical emblem of the faith of the whole community of Holdingford.”

Statistics: The Shrine was designed by Rev. Gilbert Winkelman, O.S.B., Dean of the School of Architecture at St. John’s University and constructed by Edward Feia, son Donald, and many parish volunteers. Over 540 loads of fieldstone from area farmers were used in the construction.

Located in the corner lot directly across from St. Hedwig’s Church, the Shrine is 42 feet long, 18 feet wide, and 22 feet high.

Phase III Forever Young singers Concert

Phase III Forever Young singers will present a concert on Sunday, September 16 at 2:00 p.m. in the Melrose High School auditorium.

The program features four-part, easylistening music. During the show, the chorus swings to Rock Around the Clock and “walks the line” with Johnny Cash. They croon Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline.

They infuse I Dreamed a Dream and Song for an Unsung Hero with the heart and soul that only years of life experiences can generate.

The three dozen chorus members range in age from 55 to 85. Currently, they come from areas around Melrose, Sauk Centre, Grey Eagle, and Upsala. Most are retired, but not retiring. Five years ago, Melrose area senior citizens developed Phase III, a social organization for persons in Phase III of their lives. Its purpose is to initiate any activities that appeal to members. Four carved angels adorning trumpets stand in procession followed by a large statue of Christ the King. Plaques with names of over one hundred soldiers were at one time embedded into the walls of the shrine, but today are no longer visible. The four crosses on the shrine are in memory of four young men from Holdingford who died during the; (1) Elmer Kerestes, Pearl harbor, (2) Walter R. Mattson, St. Lo, France; (3) Walter Krystosek, Anzio Beach, Italy, and (4) Joseph Troxil, U.S. Navy who died at sea. Recently the crosses have been updated in stainless

steel and the addition on another which is dedicated to all men and women serving in our armed Forces.

For seventy years the Shrine nestled in the backdrop of Holdingford has been a symbol of community faith and pride for those who have served and are serving our county. This Shrine has been dutifully kept up by parishioners of All Saints-St. Hedwig and many members of the community of Holdingford. We call on you to visit the Shrine and take part in the history and pride of Holdingford.

August 31, 2012: At 9:57 p.m. deputies with the Todd County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at the residence on Blaine Ave. South, Burtrum, after evidence of a marijuana grow operation was discovered. Deputies seized 15 suspected marijuana plants and various plant growing equipment and drug paraphernalia. An adult male was arrested in connection with the search warrant and Felony charges are pending.

September 2, 2012: At 11:02 a.m. the Todd County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a shed fire at the address of 17501 Dutchman Drive in Burnhamville Township, Sect. 22.

Neil Wolbeck, the property owner, advised that the fire started when a small pile of wood he was burning caught the grass on fire near his shed. Wind direction and dry conditions were contributing factors of the fire. The shed was a total loss and nobody was injured in the fire.

Grey Eagle and Long Prairie Fire/Rescue assisted at the scene.
