Never give up … never quit. -By Harvey Mackay Never give up… never quit!

That is the motto of Travis Mills, one of only five surviving quadruple amputee soldiers from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

I firmly believe and often preach that one person can make all the difference in the world. Travis is a shining example.

What a story of perseverance. I was amazed at his positive outlook, humor, confidence and devotion to help people, especially disabled veterans and any amputees.

Travis recently met me in Minneapolis for a coaching session.

In some ways, I felt like I was the student. A good friend of mine, Jac Arbour, called and said he wanted to surprise me and bring a couple people to Minneapolis for a session on street

smarts. The “surprise” was Travis and his father-in-law, Craig Buck, who is also his business manager.

U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills was serving with the 82nd Airborne in Afghanistan during his third tour of duty. On the night of April 10, 2012 – four days before his 25th birthday – he was on patrol when he was critically injured from an improvised explosive device (IED) that blew off portions of both his legs and arms.

Travis thought he was going to die, but didn’t want to show fear. Two of his fellow soldiers suffered shrapnel injuries, and he asked the medic to treat them first.

He spent 19 months at Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, and went through 13 surgeries. At first he was angry, embarrassed and upset. But he soon realized that was selfish on his part. He understood that sometimes bad things happen to good people. Dwelling on the past was worthless. He was determined not to just lie around. He felt empowered to lead a life as close to normal as possible and help others.

Travis said: “It’s amazing what you can accomplish once you make that all-important decision to go forward.

I could choose to quit. If I’d wanted, people would have spoon-fed me for the rest of my life. I could have stared at the ceiling for the next 60 years and spent the rest of my life angry, frustrated, grieving and dismayed. But I chose to heal. I was the same ‘me’ as I’d always been. I was a man with scars who chose to live life to the fullest and best.”

The key was believing he was going to get better. He said: “Keep going.

Keep persevering. You’re going to get through tough times. Never give up.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Cars (2) Recently I began thinking about how automobiles have changed over the years.

Some of the original equipment on the old cars was actually hazardous to the occupants and to others sharing the road.

We can remember a time when almost all of the roads were gravel or dirt. They were usually narrow enough for cars meeting to reduce their speed to reduce damage if they were to meet in an accidental encounter. In spring the low spots were under water from thawing or rain accumulation. Corners were probably 15 mile per hour corners rather than 45

mile per hour corners. My feeling is that when the highway system improved, people began to populate areas which had previously been quite private because it was now less hassle to get there.

Car changes. WOW. Originally after 40,000 miles, the car was junk. Now there are many cars with over 200,000 miles, with a body that is not rusted and an engine able to go many more miles.

Remember, plastic doesn’t rust. Steel bumpers which could withstand pushing another car have been replaced by a painted plastic shield which is unable to withstand a good-sized June Bug. The doors which previously opened from the front for convenience have been replaced with doors that open on the back side for safety. Seat belts and shoulder harnesses now keep you in the car, when previously it may have been thought that people are safer exiting a car while it is being wrecked. We now

Travis understands that attitude is extremely important. He knows that enthusiasm is contagious, and he wants to start an epidemic. Understanding that people need a bit of a push from time to time, doctors called on him regularly during his recovery to give soldiers a push.

He said he was fortunate that he had a great support group, especially in his wife Kelsey. He had a strong network of family and friends to lean on. These mentors let him know he could get better. He told me, “It’s amazing what good things can happen when somebody knows you’re cheering them on.”

I mentioned that Travis has a good sense of humor, and he doesn’t shy away from his past. For example, when we first met, he said we are going to have a BLAST. Since he knew I wrote the book “Swim With The Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive,” he said that he was bitten by a shark. To put me at ease, he said he wanted to “disarm the situation” and looked at where his right arm should be.

After we finished dinner that first night, Travis took off his prosthetic hand and quipped, “Let me lend you a hand.”

In September 2013, he founded the Travis Mills Foundation, a nonprofit organization that assists wounded and injured veterans and their families get a new chance at a better life. Through the Travis Mills Group, he consults with and speaks to companies and organizations nationwide, inspiring all to overcome life’s challenges and adversity.

Travis’ main message is one that many people can relate to: “Hard times come to everybody. When hard times happen, we have a choice to make. We can become discouraged and bitter, or we can choose to never quit. When life gets hard, the key is just to keep pushing forward. Instead of saying, ‘It could be worse,’ the key is to say, ‘It’s going to get better!’ Then work with all your might toward that goal.”

have turn signals rather than extending your left arm out the window to notify of your intentions.

Remember when the starter button was pushed with the left foot, or when there was a choke and throttle in the hard metal dash board? The other left floor button was the dimmer switch, however that big lever had to be pushed if you wanted to change gears or stop.

Sometimes someone would forget to take the car out of gear when starting, having one foot on the brake pedal and the other on the starter caused the vehicle to lurch forward creating a drive-through garage. Not good.

There were many years when the cars had no radio, clock or air conditioning. It was a help when a wing window appeared causing greater air movement, hopefully cool. It also helped to keep the cigarette smoke from choking the occupants. Electric window controls appeared in the 1950’s, along with power steering and power assisted brakes.

About the 1950’s electric windshield wipers appeared. Previously they were operated on a vacuum system, which

caused them to stop working when you increased your speed and travel very fast when reducing your speed. Windshield washers appeared shortly thereafter.

A really big change occurred when automatic transmissions became commonplace. At first it was said that they caused an increase in gas consumption, but that problem disappeared after a few years. Today we have automatic transmissions with 6 or more gears, if they were manual transmissions they would need to be much bigger and heavier.

Cars today use much less gasoline than their ancestors. This is accomplished by aerodynamics, better tires, less weight, more plastic and fuel injection.

One must say that today we are driving better cars, but it still feels good to admire one of those great old classics.

Al was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, St. Joseph’s Men’s Society, American Legion Post 101, was on the Parish Council, Creamery Board, Oak Township Board, Fire Warden for 45 years, and one of the founding members of the Birch Lake Gun Club.

Survivors include his children, Chuck (Gail) Borgerding of New Munich, Kathy (Virgil) Lahr of Paynesville, Cheryl (Jim) Thelen of St. Martin, Jane (Dan) Schleicher of New Munich, Brian (Kathy) Borgerding of Sauk Centre, and Corey (Holly) Borgerding of Albany; 30 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren with two on the way, and 13 step great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers, Bernice “Bay” Stroeing of St. Paul, Art (Nellie) Borgerding of Cold Spring, Thomas Borgerding of Melrose, Jean (Frank) Ostendorf of St. Joseph, and John (Darlene) Borgerding of Melrose; sisters-in-law, Viola Borgerding of Freeport and Sister Geraldine Zierden, O.S.B. of St. Cloud.

Al was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Borgerding on December 21, 2015; daughter, Mary Borgerding; grandchildren, Robin Borgerding, Kimberly Lieser, and Joseph Lieser; great-grandchildren, Isaac Lieser and Parker Thelen; brothers and sisters, Leo Borgerding, Dolores “Lori” Ettel, Annella Ehlert, and infant brother, James Borgerding; sister-in-law, Ginny Borgerding; and brothers-in-law, John Stroeing, Alcuin Ettel, and Jim Ehlert.

Memorials are preferred.

Alcuin P. “Al” Borgerding, age 89 of Freeport, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held We d n e s d a y, September 4 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Entombment was in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Alcuin Peter Borgerding was born February 15, 1930 in Freeport, Minnesota to Ben and Theresa (Hoeschen) Borgerding.

He served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean Conflict. On February 9, 1954 he was united in marriage to Margaret Zierden at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. After their marriage, they moved to Georgia where Al was stationed and lived on the Air Force Base. After the military, Al and Margie moved to Freeport and Al began working at the Freeport Feed Mill. They later purchased a farm a mile and a half southwest of Freeport. Al retired from farming in 1992 and began driving truck for Freeport Trucking. He enjoyed fishing, hunting in the bluffs, evening drives in the country, and woodworking. He built many

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, September 7, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Michael Bitz officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Grey Eagle.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m.

Saturday at the church.

Elaine Mabel Asmus was born October 18, 1929 in Grey Eagle, Minnesota to Wilbert, Sr. and Minnie (Sabart) Guse. She attended school in Grey Eagle. On February 11, 1947 she was united in marriage to Melvin Asmus at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Bend. After their marriage, she and Melvin farmed in Round Prairie Township. In 1985 Elaine and Melvin retired and moved into town. Elaine began working at the Grey Eagle School in the school kitchen, until the school closed.

Elaine was president of the Grey Eagle Senior Center and an active promoter of the Rock-A-Thon fundraiser. She was also on the Board of Directors at the Lutheran Care Center in Little Falls and on the board for Grey Eagle Housing. Elaine loved gardening, canning, baking, quilting and embroidery, and enjoyed playing cards with her card groups.

Survivors include her two daughters, Judy (Dan) Hederman of Columbia Heights and Karen (Richard) Hennen of Grey Eagle; three grandchildren, Kelly (Chris) Herold, Lila (Rick) Anderson, and Waylon (Laura) Hennen; six great-grandchildren, Breanna Hederman, Madison Herold, Bethany Herold, Nicole Bailey, Devon Joarnt, and Elizabeth Hennen; three great-greatgrandchildren, Annabelle Bailey, Wyatt Schettler, Michelle Trapp, and one on the way; and brother, Gary (Deborah) Guse of Harris.

Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Asmus; parents; grandchildren, Lisa Hennen and James Hederman; brothers and sisters, Willard Guse, Walda Stueck, Richard Guse, Norman Guse, Wilbert, Jr. “Bud” Guse, Harlen Guse, and Shirley Johnson.

Burial will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville, with Father Ron Dockendorf officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Parish Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM on Friday, September 13th and from 10 to 11 AM Saturday at the church. The Christian Mothers will pray a Rosary at 4:30 PM Friday.

Carl “Sonny” Peterson

Carl “Sonny” Peterson, 62 year old resident of Swanville, MN passed away Saturday, August 31, 2019 at the Long Prairie Hospital in Long Prairie, MN. A funeral service will be held 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN with Rev. Kevin Zellers officiating. Burial will take place in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in Swanville, MN. A visitation will be held from 4-7 P.M. on Friday and from 9:30-10:30 A.M. on Saturday all at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN. There will be a Celebration of Life Luncheon following the services on Saturday at 12:00 P.M. at the Sobieski Community Center in Sobieski, MN. Sonny (Carl) Peterson was born on July 18, 1957 in Long Prairie Minnesota to the parents of Carl and Ellen Peterson. He lived most of his life in Swanville where he enjoyed spending time supporting the community through various ways including being a devoted member of the Swanville Lions club.

Sonny worked in a variety of jobs before finding what he enjoyed most, trucking. In 1987, together with Sandy, they founded “Sonny Peterson Trucking”. The business started with the two of them, 1 truck and Brother Jody in the shop. The business eventually grew to as many as 30 semitrucks hauling goods across the US. In his 32 years in business, it wasn’t uncommon

for Sonny to take on family and friends to give them an opportunity in which he trained them up to be as successful as he was. Sonny’s dedication to Sonny Peterson Trucking kept him working up until just a few days before he left us.

Sonny’s hobbies are almost too many to list. He enjoyed anything that went fast.

He spent his time away from the shop riding Harley Davidsons, flying airplanes, snowmobiling, and golfing. Whatever it was that Sonny was up to it included a group of family (his children), friends and good music. On Sunday afternoons he often hosted afternoon cookouts where he and Cousin Fred spent time cooking for the gang. He made sure to make time for his children Michelle and CR as well as his precious grandchildren: Milo, Ellen and Louie. There is nothing he wouldn’t do for them. Sonny passed away peacefully while listening to music at Long Prairie Hospital where he was surrounded by his best Friend Suzie, his children, brother and sister, nieces and nephew and long-time friend and business partner Sandy. Words cannot express how much he will be missed. Please join us in celebrating his life as that is how Sonny would have wanted it. Sonny, you have left us too soon but you left an admiral legacy. We love you.

Sonny is survived by children, Michelle (Lonny) Hutchins of Swanville, MN and Carl “C.R.” Peterson of Swanville, MN; siblings, Jody (Carol) Peterson of Swanville, MN and Holly (Bram) Sanchez of New Orleans, LA; girlfriend, Susan Kiley of Sobieski, MN and grandchildren, Milo, Elen, and Louis Hutchins.

Sonny was preceded in death by parents, Carl and Ellen Peterson and brother, Timothy Peterson.

Funeral arrangements are with the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Swanville, MN.

Dennis Richard Dobmeier

Dennis Richard Dobmeier, age 53, passed away on Friday, August 23, 2019.

Services were held Thursday, August 29, 2019 at the Immaculate Conception Church in St. Anna, MN. Burial was in the Seven Dolors Parish Cemetery.

Dennis was born November 21, 1965 to Elmer and Elaine (Schindler) Dobmeier. He lived and worked on the family farm in St.

Anna. Most recently he lived in Sauk Centre, MN and worked at St. Johns University. In his free time he enjoyed spending time with family, mowing lawns, and biking.

Dennis is survived by his brother Duane (Agnes) and their children; Clayton, Justin, Jeramie, Anna, William, Mary and Lynda.

He is also survived by his sister, Brenda (Tom) Nistler and their daughter Cassie.

Daniel A. “Dan” Schwieters

Daniel A. “Dan” Schwieters, age 76 of Spring Hill, passed away unexpectedly at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota, after injuries sustained in an ATV accident on Tuesday, September 3, 2019.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 9 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m.

Sunday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Parish prayers will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Daniel Aloys Schwieters was born November 19, 1942 in Melrose, Minnesota to Casper and Lorraine (Wander) Schwieters. On November 21, 1964 he was united in marriage to Doreen Theiler at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose.

Dan began farming southwest of Spring Hill in 1968 and “retired” in 2005, but still continued to help on the farm. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church

Energy Assistance Program The Energy Assistance Program (EAP) helps pay home heating costs and furnace repairs for income-qualified households. EAP is federally funded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Grants are available for renters or homeowners, with household income at or below 50 percent of the state median income, and is based on household size, income, fuel type and energy usage.

Services may include payment of energy bills, help with utility disconnections or necessary fuel deliveries, education on efficient and safe use of home heating energy, and repair or replacement of homeowners’ malfunctioning heating systems.

EAP pays the utility company directly on behalf of eligible households. Qualifying families must apply for assistance at the local service provider in their area.

The day began with sunshine, blue skies and gentle breezes. The deep blue waters were calm and peaceful. Dear Motor Medics, Guys I’ve listened to the show for years and I feel I’m pretty well versed in the basics of auto repair so when I was told I had killed my car because of something I had done dozens of times in the past on other vehicles I was concerned. I purchased a used 2010 Toyota Prius Hybrid for the fuel savings and the technology. After a few weeks of driving the battery failed in my driveway and I could not get it started. I figured I would just give it a quick charge then drive to the store to pick up a new battery and that’s where it all went bad. I connected my charger for a few hours and then tried to start it, but it would still not run. I then installed a new battery and the car powered on but would not move. I had it towed to the dealer and they inspected it then called me to say that charging the car caused a failure in two of the vehicle computers. They did not tell me why, but I had no choice, so I just fixed it.

How can this be?

-Chris in Berkley, California Dear Chris, Chargers can put out 20 volts or more without a load so when connected to a totally dead battery that voltage can destroy the computers. Always verify the proper charging procedure before charging your car to avoid this kind of damage.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I’m all shook up literally. I can’t seem to get my car to stop vibrating at all speeds. The problem seems to be

worse when I am less than 30 mph, but I feel it all the time. Sometimes at low speeds the steering wheel even shakes left to right. The vibration started a few months back and seems to be about the same. My tires are about two years old and have 20k miles on them and appear to be in good shape with no excessive wear. My mechanic said the front-end components all look very good and that my tires are properly balanced. Do you have any thoughts?

-Juanita in Sioux Falls, South Dakota Dear Juanita, It sounds like you may not have a tire balance issue but rather a tire belt issue. You can balance a square tire, really you can, but it will only be smooth on the tire machine. What I’m saying is even if the weight of the tire is balanced out the tread can be irregularly shaped causing a hop or side to side movement when in contact with the road. With the vehicle on the shop’s hoist ask them to observe the tread of the tire and see if it stays steady as the tire rotates. If it has a lot of movement up and down or side to side, you may have a broken belt which is causing the shaking you are experiencing.

Burnhamville Township July 30, 2019 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held July 30, 2019 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m.

by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Sup. Joe Muellner was absent. Lee Daly and Al Leinen, Jacob Marty and Erv Herdering were also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of June 25, 2019 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Johnson. Motion was seconded by Sup. Berscheit.

Motion passed.

For correspondence the township board members received letters about district 8 meeting, resolution recording, an a leasing information letter.

Members of the Big Swan Lake Improvement District Association were present to discuss runoff protection along Emerald Trail. They talked to Todd Co. Soil & Water and she suggested using curlex sediment logs in both ditches to help control run off. Sup. Johnson made a motion to approve the sediment logs in the road right-of-way. Sup. Berscheit seconded the motion. Motion passed. They also asked the township board for permission to post a sign by the public access to promote walleye release as it is a walleye stocking area. However, that public access is located off a county road. They will talk to the county about posting the sign.

A resident complained of rough road on 341st Ave. from 160th to 150th St. A supervisor will check to see if it needs more gravel or a good blading job.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5783 through 5797: Rev. $1,004.44; R & B $35,762.36.

Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

At the special hearing tonight the board listened to local residents about the usefulness of a building nuisance. The lawyer was not present to explain a state statute about this. The board and the residents here agreed that it would be difficult to define a nuisance building, costly and hard to enforce an ordinance like that.

The board will wait to hear from the lawyer what the next step would be.

In the road report the board discussed adding more berms on 210th St. to help washouts on the north side. The contractor is working on spot graveling. A trapper is working on controlling beavers in Molly Creek. Contractor will clear culvert when

able. Sup. Johnson suggested getting the culvert in now for the manure line to go thru on Ermine Drive. Supervisors discussed Yield signs on Era Trail. That is a private road. The supervisors are still doing weed inspection.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $101,434.5. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:42 p.m.

Jeremy Boots, city engineer, was present to explain and discuss with council the water tower inspection report. Boots explained the three different options to repair the tower. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to have the water tower rehabilitated in the interior only and have the specifications state with a ten-year guarantee. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Boots will get the specifications for the tower out to the interested companies.

Resolution #19-0806A authorizing the sell of lot 3 block 2 in the North Berkey Avenue Addition to Charles and Peggy Parins was presented to the council. A check for $500.00 has already been received. Land use permits were presented to council. The P & Z committee has already looked at these applications and approved.

Jay Loven would like to add a deck and cement walkway to the back of his existing house.

An ordinance adopting section 6.1.4 for the problem of the use of engine brakes (jake braking) within the city limits was presented to the council. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to adopt ordinance #190806B banning the use of engine brakes (jake braking) within the city limits. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Council member Maciej will have signs put up within the city limits.

There was discussion on putting up a Habitat for Humanity home in the new Berkey Addition. Tabled until next meeting.

The city attorney will be contacted on the provisions the city will need. A representative from Habitat for Humanity will be asked to attend the next council meeting.

There was discussion on raising the water/sewer rates to help with the raising costs and the new water tower. Tabled until next council meeting.

New council chairs were approved by council.

The Swanville Rural Fire Association annual meeting will be held Tuesday, August 27 at 8:00 p.m. Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. at the Swanville Center and then recess to attend the Fire Assoc. meeting.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the claims.

Deb Wood seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at 7:00 p.m.

Jason John Gorka, 43 year old resident of Sobieski, MN passed away Friday, August 30, 2019 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Sobieski, MN with Father Leo Moenkedick officiating. Burial was in St. Edwards Parish Cemetery in Elmdale, MN. Jason was born on March 1, 1976 in Little Falls, MN to the late John and Joyce (Goebel) Gorka. He grew up in Upsala, MN where he attended and graduated from Upsala High School. He was united in marriage to Cary Blechinger on April 17, 2018 in Las Vegas, NV. Jason worked his

entire life in the family business, operating and managing Herbie’s Bar in Sobieski, MN until 2015 when he and his brother Daniel took over the business. In his free time, he enjoyed riding motorcycles, fishing, going on road trips, and watching his son Wyatt play ball. Jason loved having people around him, whether he was socializing with customers at Herbie’s Bar or had friends and family at his house, Jason loved having people around him. He will forever be remembered for his fun, loving and at times goofy spirit. Jason was dearly loved and will be dearly missed.

Jason is survived by wife, Cary Blechinger-Gorka of Sobieski, MN; children, Wyatt Gorka, Grace Boser, Gunner Boser and Riley Boser; siblings, Daniel Gorka of Sobieski, MN, James (Tammy) Gorka of Flensburg, David (Missy) Gorka of Burtrum, MN and Donna Lukasavitz.

Motorcycle Accident: September 2, 2019: At approximately 8:09 p.m., received a report of a motorcycle accident with injuries on Dove Road just south of Flensburg, in Culdrum Township.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the motorcycle, 53-year-old James Gorka of Flensburg, MN was traveling north on Dove Road when he struck a deer with his motorcycle. Gorka was transported by Mayo Clinic Ambulance to St. Gabriel’s Hospital with unknown injuries.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Swanville First Response Team and Mayo Clinic Ambulance.

Stearns County Sheriff’s Office

Fatal Crash: September 3, 2019: Fatal car versus ATV crash.

Daniel Schwieters, 76, of Belgrade was driving his 2002 Polaris Ranger side-by-side southbound on County Road 175. As Mr. Schwieters was negotiating a left-hand turn onto 265th Street, he was struck from behind by a 2002 Ford Explorer driven by Juan Hernandez Martinez, 27, of Melrose. Mr. Schwieters was ejected from the ATV and sustained a severe head injury.

Life Link airlifted Mr. Schwieters to the St. Cloud Hospital where he later died.

Mr. Hernandez was evaluated at the scene and released.

The ATV was equipped with seat belts, but it appears as though Mr. Schwieters was not wearing it at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota State Patrol.

Elrosa Fire and Rescue, Sauk Centre Ambulance, and Belgrade Police Department assisted at the scene.

August 29, 2019: At 22:54 Jacob Kuhn (20), of Long Prairie, was stopped for traffic violations on County Road 33/130th St. near Grey Eagle. As a result Kuhn was issued a citation for driving after revocation.

September 3, 2019: During the week of August 25th through August 31st, the Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to 260 calls for service. The following were the types of calls: 89 traffic stops, 16 civil process, 17 suspicious activity type complaints, 2 thefts, 9 welfare checks, 4 assist other agencies, 6 accidents, 3 traffic complaints, 2 disturbances/domestics, 2 car/deer accidents, 3 alarms, 6 scams and 19 farm animals out complaints. Todd County Dispatch received 130 - 911 Calls during the week.

Hours would be approximately 35 hours per week.
