Scamper your way to creative solutions -By Harvey Mackay In the beginning it was the button. Then came the zipper.

And then came velcro. How? The ubiquitous “touch fastener” was invented about 40 years ago by a Swiss engineer named George de Mestral, who based his idea on his observation of the way burrs stuck to the fur of his hunting dogs after a walk in the woods.

Many good ideas have been discovered because someone poked around in an outside industry or discipline, and applied what they found to their own field.

Dan Bricklin took the “spreadsheet” concept from accounting and turned it into VisiCalc, the program that helped create the microcomputer software industry.

World War I military designers borrowed from the cubist art of Picasso and Braque to create more effective camouflage patterns for tanks and guns.

Mathematician John von Neumann analyzed poker-table behavior and developed the “game theory” model of economics.

The “unbreakable” U.S. military code used in World War II was based on the Navajo language.

“I’ve known advertising people who got ideas from biology, software programmers who got inspiration from songwriters, and investors who spotted new opportunities by going to junkyards,” said Roger von Oech in his book “A Kick in the Seat of the Pants.”

In my experience, listening to customers is a tremendous source of inspiration. Hearing what their specific needs are often turns out not to be exclusive to that customer, and can benefit other accounts that our company services.

We’ve added products and features

because one customer needed a particular item.

I’ve heard it said that there are no new ideas, just improvements on old ones. I’m not sure that’s true, but many of the great “inventions” have been a next generation or hybrid of a tried-and-true product or system.

Some problems require fresh, innovative thinking. One way to search for creative solutions is to SCAMPER toward a better result: • Substitute. Replace an element that’s part of the problem. Use a different material, ingredient or person and see what happens. Try a variety of options to improve the process or product.

• Combine. Put elements together.

Do you have two departments working on related problems? Plan some joint sessions so they can brainstorm a better solution.

By seeing the whole pizza instead of one slice of the pie, you create the potential for an exciting new recipe for success.

• Adapt. Look outside the problem for something you can use to address it.

Refer to the Velcro example: de Mestral wasn’t actively seeking a new fastener, but recognized the potential use of such an accidental discovery. Be open to possibilities.

• Minimize/maximize.

Make something smaller or larger. Instead of targeting the mass market with a new product, for example, maybe you can find a small niche to sell it to. Conversely, maybe a specialized tool has wider potential. Internet marketing is the ideal tool for specialized products.

• Put things to a different purpose.

Look for a different application. Are people in their most productive roles, or are they looking for other opportunities to shine? Encourage hidden talents to surface.

• Eliminate. Look for elements you don’t need. Often we include steps in a process out of habit, for example, whether they still serve the original purpose or not.

Analyze as you go along to see where you

could streamline or improve.

• Rearrange. Put the elements in a different order or reverse them completely.

It’s easier to spot what’s missing in a new arrangement. Take a chance on a new beginning and see if it leads to a better ending.

I tend to agree with the wisdom of Carl Ally, founder of the Ally and Gargano ad agency, who said: “The creative person wants to be a know-it-all. He wants to know about all kinds of things: ancient history, nineteenth century mathematics, current manufacturing techniques, flower arranging and hog futures. Because he never knows when these ideas might come together to form a new idea. It may happen six minutes later or six months or six years down the road. But he has faith that it will happen.”

Creativity goes hand in hand with being curious. It isn’t necessary to become an expert on opera or baseball or auto mechanics to be successful in business, but it will expand your horizons. You just might be amazed what you find at the edge of your universe.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Hats and Travel Recently I had an opportunity to spend a few enjoyable minutes with someone I hadn’t visited with in about 35 years.

During the course of our conversation, he shared a story about spending free time while he was a kid.

As a young farm kid, like most of us, there were many duties and work projects that needed to be accomplished.

These things took priority over any recreational activities that we had planned.

Sometimes the Fathers would feel that they should attend an auction or go to St. Cloud, which left some free time for the kids. This free time, along with a few free evenings gave the kids a chance to get together for softball games, or as it was sometimes called, kitten ball. There were 6 kids in their neighborhood, about ½ mile from each other, which made the walk to a location to play ball very easy.

As the games became more competitive, the kids decided that they should have a batting helmet. The helmet was not actually needed to protect the batter’s head, but it made the games seem more professional.

They discovered that 20 Wheaties box tops could be traded for a free batting helmet.

Soon everyone in the neighborhood, including grandparents, were eating Wheaties and saving box tops. The result was that they did get a free helmet, however at this time, it’s location is not certain.

I’m sure that some of you were aware

of this, but there is an interesting story about the US Postal Service. The Post Office delivery people have traditionally performed special community services, such as taking Parcel Post packages to homes, checking on someone living alone and making sure that things looked “normal” on their route. Since they traveled the same route 6 days per week, it was very easy to notice if something was not normal. Fires were frequently items that were not part of the “normal”.

In 1913, Parcel Post service started. It gave a chance for those in out state areas to buy items that were just like those worn by the people in the big cities. They could look at catalogs and admire the models and in some cases begin to think of certain ones as “special” friends. It also created a method of purchasing that ultimately began the demise of local clothing stores. It caused the local community to expand their appearances and ideas. The hair styles of the models began to appear in our local communities.

Parcel Post also changed things in other ways. Evidently there was a weight limitation of 11 pounds for an item and there were no regulations as to how items should be wrapped. As often happens, individuals began to possibly abuse the system. Parcel post was used by some individuals to send children. Stories of parents mailing their kids to grandparents. Sending the kids by post required paying the postage costs and probably knowing someone at the postal service that would watch the kid during the trip. It is said that the cost of postage to send a kid a rather short distance was $.15, but in that case the father insured the child for $50.00. I would be interested to read the stipulations regarding what would constitute a claim, such as the item being lost, damaged or possibly change in appearance as a result of handling by the

Kathleen “Kathy” J. Kiley, 58 year old resident of Upsala, MN, passed away from natural causes on Monday, August 24, 2020, in the comfort of her home. A memorial gathering was held Monday, August 31, 2020 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. Burial was at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls, MN. Kathy was born on January 22, 1962, to the late Joseph and Dana Carter. Kathy lived life her way. She loved her children and adored her grandchildren with all her heart. Kathy traveled her whole life. She loved to travel with her friends on outlandish adventures across the U.S and Jamaica.

Kathy was known for her incredibly witty attitude and her voice that could carry you home. A story was never told properly until Kathy told it. Always full of spirit and life

she will always be remembered and never forgotten.

Kathy is survived by daughters, ElizaAnne Carter, Sarah Carter; sons, Erik Kiley and Jaret Kiley; step-daughter, Jessica Kuhlmann; brother, Terry (Connie) Carter; sister, Darcy (Dan) Motschenbacher; grandchildren, Finn, Wednesday, and Jeremiah.

Annabelle Irene Pfaff

Annabelle Irene Pfaff passed away in the early hours of August 15, 2020 at Country Manor in Sartell, MN. Anabelle was an only child born to Harriet M. Sundem Schindler and Clarence T. Schindler in New Haven Township, Wisconsin on November 13, 1935. Her mother died in 1947 when Annabelle was only 11 years old. Her father remarried soon after to Viola Chatain.

Annabelle made it to eighth grade before she quit school to help support her family.

On September 15, 1956, Annabelle was married to the fun loving Norman Reuban Pfaff at Swanville Lutheran Parsonage. Her time was divided between being a dutiful housewife, a loving mother to four children, and a diligent worker in the manufacturing field. She cared for her husband who suffered from poor health, especially in his later years, until he passed on December 31, 2008 at the age of 72. At the same time, Annabelle battled with and survived breast cancer. Annabelle was a loving carefree spirit, friendly, and quick witted. Everyone was her favorite, at least that’s what she told them and then would smile and whisper “but don’t tell anyone.”

She would tell you where to go and point with her middle finger in public (due to the fact that she had lost her pointer finger during birth).

She was a skilled crafter; crocheting, sewing, quilting, beading, and stitching were a few of her hobbies. She would color beautifully, picture after picture, for hours on end. She was also a Farkel fanatic, loved puzzles and was very proud when she scored a bingo win.

Although she slowed down in her later years, her humor and love for life never faded. She was always up for an adventure and made friends wherever she went.

Survivors include her children. John Pfaff, Grey Eagle; Sandy Pfaff-Wolf, Cold Spring; and Jim (Phyllis) Pfaff, Motley; 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Other survivors include her stepbrother Thomas (Sue) Schindler; and foster brother Milton (Sue) Johnson.

Annabelle was preceded in death by her husband Norman; son Randy: who died at 1 month on June 27, 1958; parents Harriet and Clarence; stepmother Viola; and stepbrother Jackie Schindler.

Due to Covid-19 private services will be held; a memorial may be held at a later date.

Henry (Hank) Wander

Henry A. Wander, 82, of Coon Rapids, formerly from Melrose, MN died peacefully Aug. 26, 2020 at Our Lady of Peace Hospice with his son and daughter by his side.

F u n e r a l service will be Sept. 10th at 10:30 a.m. at Epiphany Catholic Church in Coon Rapids, MN with visitation an hour before services. Burial will follow at St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Ward Springs.

Henry (Hank) Anthony Wander was born on a crisp autumn day on October 26, 1937 at home in Melrose, MN. He was raised with his eight siblings by Henry, Sr. and Mary Wander.

In 1957 he graduated from Melrose High School where he was a member of the football team. He said his fondest memory of high school was graduation. His first job out of high school was working at Cold Spring Granite Co. In January of 1958, he married Patricia Young whom he raised three children with.

They spent twenty nine years together as a family until Pat’s death in June of 1987.

He married Sherry Wallace in October of 1988 and they resided in Coon Rapids until her death in 2018. They had twelve grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren between them. After 30 plus years in civil engineering, Hank retired.

After retiring he spent a lot of time with family and traveling with Sherry. He also worked part time for the city of Anoka, MN doing park security. He was a member of the national guard and a volunteer with the Coon Rapids fire department.

Henry is survived by his children: Cheryl (Dick) Seifert, Grey Eagle, MN; Rick Wander of Cokato, MN; and Julie Wander of Burnsville, MN. Brother Alquin Wander of Shreveport, LA. Step daughters: Julie Asuncion (Franklin), Jackie Averback, Jamie Sandquist and Jill Sandquist.

Twelve grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren with one on the way.

He was preceeded in death by his parents; siblings, Marcella Nelson, Evelyn Notch, Loretta Kloeppner, Virgil Wander, Margaret Scheunemann, Roselyn Jonas and Boniface Wander.

Richard (Rick) Edwin Powers, 76, of Grey Eagle passed away of natural causes on August 30, 2020 at Getty Street Assisted Living in Sauk Centre, MN. Rick was born on February 16, 1944 in Chelsea Massachusetts to Ed and Betty (Bromberg) Powers while Ed was stationed there during service in the Navy.

The family returned to Minneapolis where Rick was raised. He always enjoyed time at the family cabin on Big Birch Lake with family and friends. Rick married Carole Suchla in Minneapolis and together they had two children, David and Karen. Rick and Carole later divorced.

Rick enjoyed spending time on Big Birch, driving fast boats and snowmobiles and the thrill of running in the Winnipeg 500 Snowmobile Race.

In more recent years he found joy and comfort in his affiliation with the members and faith of the Sauk Centre Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and first wife, Carole.

He is survived by his children, David Powers and Karen Stremick; grandchildren Justin (Becka) Powers and Maddux Stremick; brother Robert (Kathleen) Powers and sister, Sherry (Wayne) Kutter, his second wife, Shirley Thompson (divorced); lifelong family friends Peggy Neibling and Betty Brooking, as well as a niece and nephews.

Sandra “Sandi” Roketa

Sandi Roketa age 54 of Bowlus, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at the St. Benedict Care Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A graveside service was held Saturday, August 29, 2020 at the Roden Family Cemetery in rural Long Prairie, MN. Sandi was born on October 12, 1965 to Edward and Helen Reed. She had 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Melvin Reed (Robin), Phyllis (Donald) Schwinghammer, Annette (James) O’Byrne, Edward Reed Jr., Raymond (Bonnie) Reed, and James (Barb) Reed.

She grew up in the Waite Park, and Bowlus/Royalton area. She married her High School sweetheart Stanley Roketa in 1981, they were married for 39 years. Right after they were married they moved to Florida. She loved the ocean, she could fish, swim, and have a good time, and it did not require a license. She loved to go shrimping where she would catch 5 gallon pails of shrimp, and we would have plenty to eat and drink until the wee hours of the morning.

While living in Florida she learned her famous skills to crack crab, shells would even fly across the restaurant and hit other patrons. Sandy moved back to Minnesota in October of 2008 to live in the St. Cloud area and then on to Bowlus.

This is where she could keep track of her father and her father in-law and mother in-law.

They had 4 children Gary, Christina, Jeremiah and Lucas. Which moved to the St. Cloud area as well. After she started having grandchildren, she also was known as Granny.

Gary’s 3 daughters Jade, Meadow, and Willow.

Jeremiah’s son Jeremiah Jr, Christina’s son William and Lucas daughter Brynlee Rose. Her children and grandchildren meant the world to her. She loved spending time with them as much as possible. For the last 12 years she worked for St. Cloud School District at Apollo High School as a kitchen worker. She loved her job and made many friends. They all loved her and her antics. Sandi loved spending time outside at a lake, camping, and fishing. She loved to tell stories about passed events. She was very funny and wasn’t scared to share what was on her mind good or bad she said it the way it was.

Sandi struggled with having 2 brain aneurysm in the past year and a half, during the year and a half she began to have seizures. Some minor and some major, she was in and out of the hospital regularly. Then during the past several months she had brain bleeds which resulted in 19 brain surgeries. This became too much for her.

She was preceded in death by both of her parents Helen (Bartz) and Edward Reed; along with 2 brothers, Melvin Reed and Edward Reed Jr.; 2 great-nephews, and a sister in-law Arlene Reed (Bieniek).

She is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, Stan; children, Gary, Christina, Jeremiah, and Lucas.

Alvina Theis

Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, September 1, 2020 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Upsala for Alvina Theis, who passed August 29, 2020.

Alvina (nee Puetz) Theis was born in Brainerd MN in 1928 to Anna and Michael Puetz. She had 5 loving sisters (one died in infancy) and one brother. She was raised on a dairy farm. She attended school in Brainerd and then moved to St Paul, where she worked various jobs including at a bakery and S & H Green Stamps. She lived at the Roman Catholic Woman’s Guild for several years.

She met Frank Theis at the Prom Ballroom in St. Paul, and later married him and lived on their farm near Marine on St. Croix.

Some years later, they moved to Bowlus to a dairy farm which she loved. She loved the country life, clean living, and animals. She helped her husband Frank with chores in the dairy barn because she wanted to. Alvina was a very sweet, kind, loving person who never had a bad word to say about anyone.

She had many friends in life and enjoyed meeting new people. She loved life, she loved to read, especially about health issues and homemaking. She loved music such as big bands, Perry Como, Glenn Miller, Bing Crosby and listening to her brother Raymond sing and play guitar as well. She loved the Catholic Church and was a member of Christian Mothers. She loved her family, was a very friendly, patient, kind loving soul. She always put everyone else first.

She was a real saint.

She leaves behind her children, Bradley (Kingchan), Stanley (Joyce), Maureen, Daniel, Terry; step-children, Donna (David) Galdonik, Jeff Theis; sisters, Marie Bragg, Arlene Freeman, Evelyn Caughey, Darlyne (Jim) Dano; brother, Raymond (Marilynm) Puetz; grandchildren, Christopher, Sara (Chris) Wilkening, David (Maria), Jacquelyn, Noah, Angela, Christina, John and Trevor; great-grandchild, Alexis; brothers-in-law, James Theis, Curtis Theis; sisters-in-law, LaRayne Theis and Ruth Bollig and many loved nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband Frank, her parents and infant sister Shirley.

Burnhamville Township July 28, 2020 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held July 28, 2020 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky and Treasurer Pam Throener. Sup. Joe Muellner was absent. Erv Herdering was also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of June 30, 2020 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Johnson and was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township board members received letters about election judging information, CARES funding, CARES Funding Opiod lawsuit letter, District 8 meeting and a petition for cartway.

In the road report the township 331st Ave resident complained of not getting dust control sprayed sooner, but the frost boils near their property needed to be fixed before dust control could be sprayed. The supervisors are working on weed inspections. The contractor for mowing ditches got different mower, but had problems with wire in the ditch on 331st Ave. There are issues with rocks in the ditch on minimum maintenance part of 321st Ave. Dunlin Road had a washout that needed work.

The township received a petition for a cartway off of Ermine Road from a landowner that does not have direct access to their property. The board set the hearing for Thursday, August 28 at 6 pm and the regular meeting will be that evening at 7 pm on a motion from Sup. Berscheit and a second from Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. The board suggested getting Joe Krueger of Brown & Krueger for attorney.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $107,386.15. Sup. Berscheit motioned to approve and Sup. Johnson seconded motion.

Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:44 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on Thursday, August 27, 2020 with the hearing at 6 p.m. and the regular meeting at 7 pm in the Burtrum Community Center.

Russell “Russ” Heitzman

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Russell “Russ” Heitzman, age 33 of Avon, was held Wednesday, September 2 at the former Arban Church location near Holdingford.

Burial was in the St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery. Russell died from injuries received in a car accident on Thursday evening, August 27, 2020.

Russell was born November 11, 1986 in Albany to Gerald and Mary (Molus) Heitzman. He grew up on the family farm outside of Holdingford. He graduated from the Holdingford High School in 2005. Many people knew him as “Pickles”. He worked for Aggressive Masonry for several years as a cement mason. He lived on the farm all of his life. He was a member of the Church of All Saints, St. Mary in Holdingford.

Russ enjoyed spending time with his nieces. After working with Muy and the gang, he would do various tasks on the farm. He loved his job so much he wore an Aggressive Masonry shirt wherever he went. He even tried to wear it to his niece’s first communion.

Russell was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He was an avid toy tractor collector. No matter what Russ was doing, he always had a smile on his face. We will miss seeing that smile and curly long hair.

Russ is survived by his parents, Gerry and Mary Heitzman; sister Janelle (Matt) Loehlein, St. Joseph; and brothers, Jeff (Emily Hennek) Heitzman, St. Joseph; and Eric Heitzman, Avon. He is also survived by two nieces, Julia and Isabella Loehlein.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Alfred and Eleanor Molus, Fred and Marie Heitzman, and his aunt Shirley Molus.

Todd Co. Sheriff’s Office

August 29, 2020: At approximately 21:18 hours, the Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting in rural Long Prairie. The victim’s vehicle was later stopped by a Todd County Deputy near the intersection of US 71 and Riverside Drive. The driver had suffered gunshot wounds and was transported to Long Prairie Hospital. The passenger suffered an apparent fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased at the scene of the traffic stop. The investigation revealed that the victims had arranged to meet acquaintances in rural Long Prairie and it is believed that the meeting was related to a drug transaction.

Law enforcement believes the suspect(s) were known to the victims and this appears to be an isolated incident. The deceased was transported to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office for a positive identification and autopsy. The Todd County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone that may have seen any vehicles or people near the intersection of County 38 and County 11 between 9 pm and 9:30 pm to contact the Todd County Sheriff’s Office. **Update: 09/01/2020: The deceased victim has been identified as Edwin Abreu Grullon (19 Years of Age) of Long Prairie.

Ricardo Del Valle Martinez (24 Years of Age) of Long Prairie has been arrested and charged with 2nd Degree Murder Aid/Abett in connection with the death of Edwin Abreu Grullon.

Bail was set in the amount of $2 million dollars without conditions and $1 million dollars with conditions. This incident is still actively being investigated by the Todd County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The Todd County Attorney’s Office is being assisted by the MN Attorney General’s Office. The public is asked to contact the Todd County Sheriff’s Office if they have any information related to this incident.

Marguerite R. “Marg” Rapp

Marguerite R. “Marg” Rapp, age 94 of Sauk Centre, died peacefully on Friday, August 21, 2020 at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 12 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre with Rev. Marty Porter officiating.

Inurnment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Sauk Centre.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m.

Saturday at the funeral home.

Marguerite Ruth Binkly was born January 1, 1926 in Leland, Oregon to William and Emily (Turner) Binkley. She was united in marriage to Glen Rapp on January 27, 1962 at Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre. Marg was employed by Minnesota Poll for the 1970 census and later for the Lewis Harris Poll. She also worked as a crop and livestock reporter and was employed by the Sauk Centre Public School as a Title/Teacher’s Instructional Aid. Marg worked for CBS News to set up for the general election in Wisconsin.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre where she was a Vacation Bible School teacher and coordinator and a member of the Paul F. Donart V.F.W. Post 2853 Auxiliary in Sauk Centre. Marg enjoyed playing BINGO, gardening, and loved doing tons of crafts. Her favorite craft was making Ukrainian Easter eggs and she made hundreds of them.

Survivors include her children, Ruth Ring of Eden Prairie, Dwight “Ike” Whalberg of Benson, Mary Thompson of Sacramento, California, and Roberta “Chip” Rapp of Alexandria; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and sisters, Jean Solomon and Roxann Davis.

Marg was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Rapp; parents; children, LaNor Sopkowiak and William Whalberg; and brother, Lee Brandon.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Sauk Centre.

Stearns Co. Sheriff’s Office

Fatal crash: August 27, 2020: At approximately 7:26 pm, the Stearns County Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a two-vehicle crash near the address of 42363 190th Avenue in Holding Township, Stearns County. This location is about 1.5 miles northwest of the City of Holdingford.

The caller reported that one of the vehicles was on fire and the other car was nearby with the driver trapped inside and not responding.

The Holdingford Fire Department responded to the scene and began life-saving efforts.

Deputies arrived and spoke with witnesses on scene. Deputies determined that Jacob Westbrock, 21, of Holdingford, was traveling northbound on 190th Ave. driving a 1994 Chevrolet pickup. Westbrock attempted to pass another vehicle that was also traveling northbound. A 2001 Oldsmobile Alero, driven

by Russell Heitzman, 33, of Avon, was traveling southbound on 190th Ave. The vehicles collided on 190th Avenue near the crest of the hill. Heitzman was pronounced deceased at the scene. Westbrock was transported to the St Cloud Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Holdingford Fire and Rescue, Mayo Ambulance Service and North Air Care Helicopter. The Minnesota State Patrol also assisted at the scene and will provide crash reconstruction. The accident remains under investigation

You’d still have $13,000 left if you paid off the car. And with the money you’d free up, you could rebuild your savings in no time. Pay off the car, dude!

Dear Motor Medics, I own a 2004 Ford F250 Powerstroke diesel truck that is a four-wheel drive. I have been having brake issues for several years. It seems that each time I repair the brake system a new issue arises within a few months. I have had all the brake pads and rotors replaced three times in 100k miles and the rear calipers replaced and then a few months later the front stuck and I had to replace those and the pads and rotors on the front again due to the sticking brakes. Now the rear is sticking and has worn the rear pads and rotors which were new not too long ago and they say I need calipers there too. The hydro booster is also leaking. Are these trucks prone to brake issues?

-Conner in Kansas City, Missouri The trucks are not what we would call, prone to issues with brakes. Depending on what loads they pull they can wear brakes, but it sounds like something deeper is wrong. When a brake system is repaired it is important to check all the system and make sure worn parts and parts prone to fail due to overheating when a caliper sticks are replaced. The brake hoses specifically are a must to change when a caliper has stuck or with high miles.

When a hose is collapsed inside it will cause repeat failures. Make sure the mechanic working on the truck has checked all these items.

If you purchased that truck from a dealer in a state that requires those parts to be on the truck then the first step could possibly be talking to them about making the repairs if they are not allowed to sell a vehicle without operating emissions controls. The next step if you have no recourse there is to get the best deal possible for repairs.

These parts are expensive and used parts are very hard to come by as many trucks that have been deleted are now having to be repaired in order to be allowed to drive on public highways. Private owners of the extra parts know they are worth a premium and most used auto parts suppliers are not allowed to sell the parts.
