bigger pieces, then there’s no deal that you and I can contemplate that can’t be put together. A deal can always be made when the parties see it to their own benefit.

Nine out of 10 lawsuits are settled before judgment is rendered in the courtroom because even the bitterest of adversaries will sit down at the same table when they can be shown there is a greater advantage to themselves in negotiating than in fighting.

Whatever it is you are trying to buy or sell can be bought or sold if you can get the other side of the table to see how the deal works to their advantage.

No matter what industry you’re in, or how far you go in your career, the ability to effectively negotiate can make the difference between success and mediocrity. Whether it’s a multimilliondollar contract or a job offer, keep this advice in mind: • Know what you want. Don’t go to the table without a clear, realistic idea of what you want to achieve. It will help you negotiate with confidence.

• Ask for what you want. Let the other person make the first offer, then respond and set the tone for the discussion. That way you’ll know how far you need to go to get what you need.

• Understand what the other side wants. A successful negotiation should satisfy both sides. Instead of trying to crush your competition, find out what he or she hopes to get, and try to work together toward a solution that works for you both.

• Don’t concede unilaterally.

Usually one side or the other has to give something up. If you do that, be sure to get a comparable concession from the other person. Giving away something for nothing will be interpreted as a weakness to be exploited.

• Don’t rush. Time can be your friend if you are willing to wait for the right deal.

• Be ready to walk away. This can take a certain amount of courage, but it’s necessary to avoid being backed into an agreement you don’t want. If possible, keep an ally in reserve – someone with the power to approve or reject the deal. This can give you an out if you need to turn down a deal, or motivate the other side to make the best offer possible.

Mark McCormack, author of “What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School, said: “I find it helpful to try to figure out in advance where the other person would like to end up – at what point he will do the deal and still feel like he’s coming away with something.

“This is different from ‘how far will he go?’ A lot of times you can push someone to the wall, and you still reach an agreement, but his resentment will come back to haunt you in a million ways.”

And that’s an important point to remember. People or companies that you make deals with on a regular, or even infrequent basis, have long memories. If

you don’t fight fair, or embarrass them, or make them feel like they have been disrespected or used, then forget about doing business with them again.

Consider the negotiating strategy used by two iconic business titans. J. P. Morgan wanted to buy a large Minnesota ore tract from John D. Rockefeller. So Rockefeller sent his son, John D. Jr., to see what Morgan had in mind.

Morgan opened, “Well, what’s your price?”

To which John D. Jr. replied, “Mr. Morgan, I think there must be some mistake. I did not come here to sell; I understood you wanted to buy.”

Obituaries Shawn Saarela

S h a w n Saarela, 29, of Long Prairie died August 25, 2015.

Shawn was born December 23, 1986, in Long Prairie to Johnny & Kelly (Hepokoski) Saarela.

He graduated from Wadena Technical College in 2006.

Shawn pursued a career as an electrical lineman and later as an electrician. Shawn developed a passion for firefighting and the Long Prairie Fire Department at a very young age. He was a founding member of the Long Prairie Fire Department Explorers and officially joined the Long Prairie Fire Department on March 6, 2008. He was currently the Assistant Fire Chief, had been a past Training Officer, past Secretary of the Relief Association

Lemke, age 91, who passed away Friday at CentraCare Health Systems-Long Prairie. Fr. Omar Guanchez will officiate and burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Long Prairie. Family and friends may call from 4-7 pm, Thursday and after 8 am Friday at the Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home – Stein Chapel, Long Prairie.

Shawn was very family oriented and loved spending time with his nieces and nephews. When he wasn’t with family and friends he could be found at the fire hall or working on demolition derby cars with his brother and friends.

Shawn is survived by his parents: Johnny and Kelly Saarela of Long Prairie; siblings: Melissa (Jeremy) Burch of Long Prairie, Nick (Kristin) Saarela of Long Prairie; grandparents: Judy (Jerry) Tomford of Park Rapids; nieces and nephews: Katylin, Ashley, Evan, Corbin and Kinzey; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Shawn is preceded in death by his grandparents: Eino & Esther Saarela and Donald Hepokoski; aunt: Connie Hepokoski; uncle: Larry Saarela; and his dog Carmen.

Ambrose Kruzel was the Urn Bearer.

Honorary Urn Bearers were: Andy Brinkman, Jim Kreemer, Brandon Hudalla, Kyle Bodle, Mark Blom, Jim Ritter, Chris Ebnet, and the Long Prairie Fire Department.

Curves. She grew up on a farm northeast of Long Prairie. She graduated from Long Prairie High School and worked for a year in Red Lake. She married Ruben Lemke on May 1, 1946 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie. They made their home in Long Prairie, where Valeria worked at Hart Press for over 25 years.

Valeria was a member of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, the Christian Womens Group and the VFW Auxiliary.

She enjoyed music, dancing, playing cards, visiting with friends on the telephone, and dining out. Her greatest love was spending time with her family.

Valeria is survived by her son, Allen (Jane) Lemke, Osakis; three grandchildren, Steve (Sheri) Lemke, Avon; Jim (Jen) Lemke, Monticello; and Kerry Lemke, Healy, AK; five great-grandchildren, Cameron, Sydney, Brooke, Morgan, and Carter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ruben in 1972, and sisters and brothers-in-law Elaine (Raymond “Bob”) Sabart and Florence (Cliff) Garlock.

The Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Emma Voit, age 99 of Albany, was Monday, August 31 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Burial followed in the parish cemetery.

Emma died Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany.

Emma was born May 22, 1916 in Albany to August and Josephine (Korte) Kohorst.

She married Alfred Voit on August 5, 1941 in Albany. The couple farmed together near Albany. Emma also worked at the Albany Area Hospital and the Mother of Mercy

LeRoy “Flash” Schiller LeRoy Schiller, age 87, of Mankato, MN died on Monday, August 24, 2015 at Pathstone Living in Mankato.

A memorial service was held on Friday, August 28 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in North Mankato with Father Ralph Zimmerman officiating.

Interment was in the North Star Cemetery in St. Cloud.

LeRoy was born to William and Rose (Cherne) Schiller on August 1, 1928. He married Dorothy Haugen Potthoff on June 12, 1970. He graduated from St. Cloud State University and was employed by the State of Minnesota Correctional Facility, St. Cloud, MN. Here he was in charge of the Special Needs Program and was the coordinator of the Learning Resource Center. During this time he acted as Chief Negotiator for the contracts between Residential Teachers and the State of MN. He was active in the MEA and Correctional Education on the local, regional, national, and the international levels.

Lake in 1982. There he was involved with many wildlife and lake groups. He served as director on the Big Birch Lake Association for 12 years. He was an instructor for Defensive Driving for 20 years. LeRoy was active in many senior and retirees programs. LeRoy and Dorothy were snowbirds and spent many winters in the south, especially Arizona.

LeRoy is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Mankato; three daughters, Kathy (Robert) McGuire of Janesville, MN Barb (Randy) Dombrovski of Mankato, and Carrol Meyers Dobler of Bismarck, ND; brothers, Clarence of Palmdale, CA and Jerry of Anchorage, AK; sisters, Rosemary Kay of Alexandria, VA, Bernice Scherping of Freeport, MN, Dorothy Noones of Livermore, CA, Delores Zimmerman of St. Cloud, Audrey Snyder of Canton, MN, and Eleanore Bovy of Minneapolis; six grandchildren; ten greatgrandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Albert Czech

Albert Czech 80 year old resident of Bowlus, MN passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at his home in Bowlus, MN. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, August 29, 2015 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus, MN with Father John Odero officiating. Burial followed in the St. Stanislaus Parish Cemetery in Bowlus, MN. Albert Vincent Czech was born on April 5, 1935 at his family’s home in Bowlus, Minnesota. He was the last of 11 children born to Robert and Rose (Trutwin) Czech. Albert worked in St. Cloud at a box company and, in 1959, lost his right leg in a work related accident. He continued to work at the company and lived in the family home until his marriage to Marcia A Solorz on May 19, 1962. The couple had 2 children while living in Bowlus, before moving to St. Cloud, Minnesota in 1964.

There, Albert worked at the box company while the couple added 3 more children to the family. Albert was also an income tax preparer with responsibility to hundreds of clients, participated in various leadership roles at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud and was a primary caretaker, along with his wife, for his aunts, in-laws, and other persons.

In 1985, Albert’s wife, Marcia, passed away at the age of 43. At the time, Albert became the main caretaker of his children. He continued to do all that he had done before, in addition to his new responsibilities.

Albert was married again on May 30, 1987 to Marjorie Adrian who assumed some of the responsibilities of raising the family. Albert

Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Long Prairie for Charlotte L. Thom, age 92, of Long Prairie who passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2015 at CentraCare Health System.

Charlotte Leda Cossette was born January 16, 1923 in Fargo, ND, the daughter of Pierre and Emma (Pronovost) Cossette. She married George P. Thom on September 13, 1943 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Wild Rice, ND. The couple lived in Fargo for five years before making their home in Long Prairie in 1953, farming west of town for 32 years. Charlotte stayed home and raised their ten children until 1967. She worked at the Larsen Boat Works in Little Falls for two years, then she took a custodian position at Hart Press from 1970 until her retirement in 1985. The couple purchased a log home southeast of Long Prairie where they lived for 20 years and finally making their home with their son Earl, three miles west of Long Prairie.

Charlotte enjoyed sewing, crafts, quilting, gardening, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends. She was a member of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and the

continued to work as a shipping manager, leader in his church, tax preparer and whatever tasks he needed to take care of for his family and friends.

In 1998, after 41 years of service, Albert retired from the box company and eventually moved back to the family farm in Bowlus.

He served three terms as mayor of Bowlus, the third term taken when the town overwhelmingly wrote his name in as their choice. He was instrumental in the building of the Bowlus Community Center, a project that he took great pride in getting accomplished.

In 2012, Albert’s second wife, Marjorie, passed away shortly after the couple had celebrated their 25th anniversary. Again, he continued as he had before, working to take care of others, especially as the primary caretaker for his brother-in-law and best friend.

A passionate gambler, he enjoyed trips to local casinos and occasional trips to Las Vegas.

In his late seventies, he was active and able to enjoy a trip to an amusement park and ride roller coasters. An avid gardener, he was known for having some of the best onions, potatoes, and pumpkins in the area. Albert was always one to enjoy life, to enjoy a joke, to give advice, to have a drink, and to share a smile.

Sometime late on August 25, 2015, Albert laid down on his bed in the same room where he had been born, closed his eyes and passed away.

He is survived by his children; Rosemary (Michael) Windschitl of Cold Spring, MN; Gregory (Sharon Roering) Czech of Clearwater, MN; Brian (Sheryl Stroeing) Czech of Bowlus, MN; Jennifer (Guy) Evens of Richmond, MN; and Christopher (LeAnn Glaser) Czech of Edina, MN; 15 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; sisters; Alma Sobiech, Clara Zupko, Marcella Pintok, and Delores Sousa; and brother, Peter Czech.

Albert was preceded in death by wives, Marcia and Marjorie; sisters, Gertrude, Marie, and Bernice; and brothers, Ambrose and Elmer.

Charlotte is survived by her children, Janet Robinson, Brownton; Russell (Elaine) Thom, Sauk Centre; Earl Thom, Long Prairie; Bruce (Gloria) Thom, Rice; Wayne (Linda) Thom, Swanville; Larry (Sandy) Thom, Melrose; John Thom, Sauk Centre; Nancy (Calvin) Burslie, Henderson, NV; and Tim (Barb) Thom, Long Prairie; 34 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband George, daughter Barbara Skillings, brothers Gaston, Maurice, Lawrence, and Clifford, and sisters Laura, Hazel, and Lucille, and great-grandson, Tyler Thom.

Author Lindsay Hardin Freeman Featured at Author’s Tea on September 26th The Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan is hosting an “Author’s Tea” on Saturday, September 26th at 3 p.m. at The Palmer House in Sauk Centre where the Rev. Lindsay Hardin Freeman will discuss her latest book, Bible Women: All Their Words and Why They Matter.

Her connection to The Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan includes her grandparents and great-grandparents were active there, as was her great-uncle, Judge Parker. “Sauk Centre has always been an important place for my family. I grew up learning about the faith and now I am able to teach it and share the story.”

Freeman, an Episcopal priest, writer and speaker lives in Minnesota. She has written and edited six books, including The Scarlet Cord: Conversations with God’s Chosen Women (Circle Books, 2010) and The Spy on Noah’s Ark and Other Bible Stories from the Inside Out (Forward Movement, 2013). In her latest book, Bible Women: All Their Words and Why They Matter (Forward Movement, 2014), Freeman explores the words of each woman who speaks in the Bible.

After writing her book The Scarlet Cord: Conversations with God’s Chosen Women,

Freeman had the urge to find out just how many women were mentioned in the Bible and what they had to say. She discovered that research had yet to be done on this aspect of the Bible. With the help of three other women and one young student, Freeman became the first person to research words spoken by women in the Bible.

After three years of research and rereading the Bible, she discovered that 93 women spoke throughout the Bible muttering nearly 14,000 words. Her work culminated in Bible Women: All Their Words and Why They Matter, will be discussed at the Author’s Tea at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 26th at The Palmer House. Proceeds of the event will go to the Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan Restoration Fund. Freeman is committed to preservation of this historic church founded in 1867. Freeman states, “My family goes back four generations with that church (Church of the Good Samaritan). It’s an important community for me, and for my entire family.”

Around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, a house fire in Freeport took the life of 50 year old Cecilia Chevalier-Larson. Stearns County Sheriff’s Office and the Freeport Fire Department found the home just south of the 4-way stop fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. Three people were in the home at the time. The two people that made it out were Dawn Belgarde, age 28 and Dusty Littledog, age 36. They were treated for smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the State Fire Marshal. UBA and the volunteers are still continuing in the process of building. The hopes are that by spring the girls’ softball team will be enjoying the final product of their labor.

According to Mikel Nelson, a member of UBA, much of the thanks goes to the countless volunteers who have been involved in helping UBA provide a quality experience for Upsala’s athletes. A huge appreciation also goes out to the Upsala Lions Club which has donated money to UBA, Upsala high school for being supportive as UBA works to make improvements, as well as many many more.

With the installment of new fields over the past years and the ability to make worthwhile changes, the UBA has made it possible for more students to attend practice after school instead of being sent home because there aren’t enough fields. Not only that, but by bringing more quality to the softball field, UBA can increase the potential for more people to attend games, the likelihood that more students will get involved and the ability to play a more official softball game.

Contact information and updates about the renovations of the softball field are posted on UBA’s facebook page. Although the Baseball Tomorrow Foundation grant provided enough money to rebuild the field, they do not provide money for the dugouts.

For anyone who is interested in donating to UBA, they can be sure that UBA is a 501(c) (3) organization and will use the money they receive wisely.

New EPA Water Regulations Cause Ripples Despite numerous efforts to stop its implementation, the Environmental Protection Agency, on Aug. 28, put into effect new regulations pertaining to Waters of the United States (WOTUS).

According to the agency, it’s an effort to clarify a long-standing law in this country known at the Clean Water Act. However, many groups have vigorously opposed the new rules, saying they vastly expand the scope of the law. Late last week, a federal judge in North Dakota granted an injunction that temporarily stops the rule from going effect, but only in the 13 states that signed on to the lawsuit. Unfortunately, Minnesota was not one of those states as our attorney general chose not to participate.

In his ruling, the judge said that states are facing imminent harm from the rule’s implementation. He went on to say that the agency (EPA) violated authority granted to it by Congress, and it failed to follow Supreme Court precedent. Despite those rather strong words, the EPA announced that WOTUS was going into effect in the other 37 states in this country (including Minnesota). According to the official view of EPA, the judge’s ruling applies only to the 13 states that are part of the lawsuit. However, lawyers representing the other side of the issue say the court ruling means the EPA cannot enforce the rule nationally.

This entire matter involving the WOTUS rule has been confusing from the beginning. Greatly expanding the term “navigable waters” to include any pot hole or low spot that fills with water following a heavy rainfall is concerning to those who farm the land. But it could also affect any landowner or homeowner who wants to move soil for any reason. The EPA, in an effort to quiet the protests from agriculture, has said there will be exemptions from the new rule. However, there is confusion and even mistrust concerning just what those exemptions will cover. Taken at face value, this new rule is extremely onerous and represents a huge taking of land rights by the federal government.

This “victory” granted by the North Dakota judge is only temporary, as the injunction will last only as long as litigation persists, and it can be overturned.

Congress, namely the Senate, needs to pass legislation that overturns WOTUS. However, even if that should happen, it’s unclear if President Obama would sign the bill.

Minnesota’s turkey industry is slowly recovering from this spring’s devastating outbreak of avian influenza. At last count, around 40 sites that were affected have restocked their barns with birds. Another 37 farms have completed all the processes required to be cleared for restocking.

There have been no new outbreaks since June 5, although the disease could flare up again this fall when migrating birds return to Minnesota. A message on the Board of Animal Health website pretty well sums up the situation by saying “since the beginning of March, Minnesota has worked through the most significant animal disease event in the history of the state.”

On our ag tour last week, House members visited the poultry testing lab in Willmar and got a first-hand update on how testing for the disease was done and what could happen this fall. Dr. Carol Cardona, of the University of Minnesota, said they anticipate possible “single outbreak events,” meaning that if the disease hits again, it would hopefully be confined to single locations and not spread like it did this past spring.

In fact Psalm 41 begins with an insightful statement: “Blessed is the person who has compassion for the poor or weak and does something about it.” God cares for the weak and the poor and the oppressed and is delighted when we do something on their behalf. In fact, David says that those who show God’s compassion will be delivered when they are experiencing the difficulties of life. But there

The first Psalm also begins with a statement about the person whom God will bless: “...the man who avoids contact with those who have evil intentions and instead finds pleasure in the teachings of the law of the Lord.” As we “hide” God’s Word - His law - in our hearts, it will give us light for our lives and directions to our destiny - eternal life with Him. And still more!

In Psalm 32 we read that “Blessed in the one whose transgressions are forgiven and whose sins are covered.” When we go to God in faith asking for forgiveness and salvation He will accept us, cleanse us and bless us.

So God’s Word is clear: If we want His blessings then we must follow His instructions. First, when we accept God’s salvation we will enjoy the blessing of forgiveness. Then, we will be blest if we avoid the influence of those who are evil and study His law. Finally, we will be blest if we do His work in His world by caring for those in need of His love, mercy and grace.

When you take these kinds of behaviors to unhealthy extents, you have extreme spenders or extreme savers. Either one can be an unhealthy thing.

Extreme spenders may need to slow down, grow up and learn the value of money by living on a budget, setting savings goals and working to meet these goals. Extreme savers often operate out of fear and uncertainty. In some cases, they may have an even worse spirit in their lives — greed.

They have to learn that it’s okay to have a little fun spending and to give generously.

When it comes down to it, there are only three uses for money: spending, saving and giving. You have to do some of all three in order to have a truly happy and healthy life!

Dear Dave, My wife and I moved to Washington, D.C., about a year ago, and we’d like to put our old place in North Carolina that we’ve been renting on the market. We’ll be asking around $140,000 for it, so do you think we should consider professionally staging the home?

-Ben Dear Ben, It would make a lot of sense if you were talking about a million-dollar house, but with a less expensive home like that I’d just make sure it’s really clean and neat and nice — especially the front area with the sidewalk and bushes. We’re talking curb appeal here. Make sure the front door, trim and porch area are all cleaned or painted, too. All this is like a first impression on a job interview.

There shouldn’t be any bad smells in the house, and everything inside should be crisp and clean as well. You can stage it yourself with a few pieces of nice furniture and such, if you have it available. And try this old realtor’s trick to make things a bit more homey: Put few drops of vanilla extract on an eye of the stove while it’s heated. It will make the whole house smell like you’ve been baking cookies.

But no, I wouldn’t pay to stage a $140,000 house.

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office August 29, 2015: At approximately 12:07 p.m. they received a report of an ATV accident on Horseshoe Road and Haven Rd in Ripley Township, north of Little Falls. 57 year old James Strassburg, of Burtrum, was riding his ATV in a grassy area off the roadway doing donuts when the ATV rolled over him, causing injury to his head area. He was transported to St. Gabriel’s Hospital by Gold Cross Ambulance. The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Brainerd State Patrol and Gold Cross Ambulance.

August 27, 2015: At approximately 1150 the Todd County Sheriffs Office received a report from Cindy Lyon, rural Grey Eagle, stating that someone left a message claiming to be from the IRS. Citizens are reminded that this scam is becoming more common and that the IRS will contact you by mail if there is money owed.

August 28, 2015: At 1324 hours a semi tractor trailer belonging to a Troy Pecka Trucking out of East Grand Forks, started on fire at the potato sheds north of Long Prairie. There were no injuries reported Word Search Answers from August 27 as a result of the fire, but the vehicle was a total loss. Both Browerville and Long Prairie Fire Departments were on scene to extinguish the fire.

August 28, 2015: At 2006, TCSO received information about a vehicle in the ditch on County 102 near 160th St. in Burnhamville TWP sect 32.

Andrea Hernandez, city of Melrose, was southbound on County 102 when she lost control of a 2001 Toyota Camry. She left the roadway and struck some trees in the ditch. Andrea received minor injuries and the car was a total loss.

Bag Limit for Sunfish Proposed for 6 Lakes in Morrison, Todd and Crow Wing Counties The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will hold two meetings to discuss proposed experimental fishing regulations for sunfish on six lakes in the Little Falls fisheries management area: Long (Higgins), Moose, and Maple lakes in Todd County; Green-Prairie Fish and Sullivan lakes in Morrison County; and Platte Lake in Crow Wing County.

The meetings will be held from 6-8 p.m., on Sept. 9, at Long Prairie City Hall, 615 Lake St. S., Long Prairie.

DNR staff also will be available to discuss and take comments on these proposals at an open house covering all fishing regulations under review around the state on Sept. 23, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the DNR Central Office, 500 Lafayette Road in St. Paul.

have shown potential for good growth and survival of sunfish, has increased the availability of larger sunfish. The six lakes proposed for the reduced bag limit in the Little Falls management area have shown potential for larger sunfish based on netting efforts since 1999. The regulations, if adopted, would be in effect from 2016-2026 with frequent assessments of sunfish populations during this period.

Public input on the experimental 10 sunfish daily bag limit will help DNR fisheries staff determine whether those regulations should be adopted. People unable to attend the public input meetings may submit written comments to the DNR Little Falls area fisheries office, 16543 Haven Road, Little Falls, MN 56345.
