Don’t let false assumptions cloud your thinking

O n e afternoon, a woman noticed two small boys on the front step of a house. They were in their school uniforms carrying their backpacks and she assumed were going home after school.

They were on their tip-toes trying to reach the doorbell with a stick.

“Poor little lads, they can’t get in,” she thought. So she marched up the path, reached over the boys and gave the bell a long, firm push.

The surprised boys turned around and screamed, “Quick, run!” and promptly disappeared over the garden wall.

We’ve all had incidents where we misread the situation or falsely assumed that what we saw represented all the facts. Then we realize we were wrong or at least judged prematurely.

While it’s not necessarily difficult to rethink your original assessment, when it comes to your business, it can be very costly. You never want your customers to have to assume or guess that they know about all your products or services. You must be specific, informative and userfriendly. To make sure your messaging is working in your favor, consider these following questions.

Do your customers have any idea what your business offers? So often, business names don’t provide clues about the nature of a product or service. If that’s your situation, you must find ways to present your business so that customers can find you. An organization with a name like “Jones and Associates” could be a law firm, a real estate company, house painters, or a dozen other businesses. You can’t assume that your name is synonymous with your service. Make sure your Internet presence reflects the range of your services.

Do your customers know what your products and services can do for them?

Spell it out. Even a product as basic as an envelope does more than move mail.

Don’t assume that every customer is tech-savvy or aware of options that would better serve their needs.

While you are rethinking ways to keep your customers from making false assumptions about your business, you can also reprogram your thinking so you can avoid making false assumptions.

Here are some ideas to consider: • Your first assumption may be false.

Make sure you have the facts before you make a judgment.

• Give other people’s ideas a chance. Another perspective can be extremely useful in making an accurate assessment.

• Learn to separate facts from opinions. Facts are provable, objective and clear. Logic prevails rather than personal bias.

• Think about how assumptions you make could change with circumstances.

For example, can you assume that costs will remain the same? That would affect your bottom line, and potentially your success.

• Are all the assumptions in your business plan reasonable? Are you open to trying new things to improve your performance?

• Don’t assume that today’s customer will be tomorrow’s customer. Plan for changes and be willing to change plans.

As needs change and businesses come and go, you must be prepared to alter your thinking and marketing to adapt to the times.

Resetting your mindset is never simple. We all come equipped with viewpoints and perceptions that color our thinking. But we can retrain our

Two service technicians working for the gas company conducted an ongoing rivalry to break up the monotony of their jobs. One day, as they went around to the back of a house to read the meter, the woman who owned the house idly watched them from her kitchen window.

When they finished their business, the two technicians decided to race back to the truck – and so burst into a run.

As they reached their vehicle, they were surprised to see the woman of the house close on their heels.

“What’s wrong?” one asked.

She panted, “When two gas company men run from my house, I figure it’s time for me to run, too.”

Eugene C. “Gene” Theiler

Obituaries Ilene E. Oevermann

Ilene E. Oevermann, age 72 of Melrose, died unexpectedly on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at the CentraCare Hospital in M e l r o s e , Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 24 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment was in the parish cemetery.

Ilene Elizabeth Lieser was born June 2, 1942 in Belgrade, Minnesota to Victor and Hilaria (Meyer) Lieser. Ilene graduated from Belgrade High School in 1960. On February 12, 1982 she was united in marriage to Donald Oevermann

at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose.

Ilene worked as a bookkeeper for several grocery stores until her retirement in 1994. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Ilene enjoyed spending time up north with family and friends, traveling, and spent a lot of time camping.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Oevermann of Melrose; daughter, Brenda (Dale) Eibensteiner of St. Joseph; step-children, Greg (Tracy) Oevermann of Willmar and Kelly (Phillip) Elkin of Plymouth; grandchildren, Lucas, Ashley, Adam, Claire, and Abby; greatgrandchildren, Brayden, Ava, and Jalynn; step-mother, Imelda Lieser of Paynesville; brothers and sisters, Marilyn (Joe) Caspers of Richfield, Adeline (Tony) Tiemann of Eagan, Kenny (Barb) Lieser of Belgrade, Joyce (Dan) Hess of Avon, Bonnie (Kevin) Spanier of Phoenix, Arizona, and Sandy (Keith) Hemmesch of Paynesville; and many nieces and nephews.

Ilene was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Hilaria Lieser; and brother, David Lieser.

Serving as urn bearer was Brenda Eibensteiner. Cross bearer was Luke Eibensteiner and scripture bearer was Ashley Schmitz.

Survived by girlfriend Cindy Jacobs and their sons Dominic and Levi, his daughters, Lucy and Natalia and Cindy’s sons, Hunter and Aiden; mother, Jeanne Stuns; father, Charles Stuns (Diane); brother, Nicholas Stuns (Alyssa) band niece, Grace &

nephew, Benjamin; sister, Stephanie; grandmother Alice Thesing; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Preceded in death by grandparents Gus & Imogene Stuns, Dale Thesing; uncle Nicholas Thesing.

Funeral Mass was held Wednesday September 24, 2014 at St. Peters Church, 1405 Hwy 13, Mendota Heights.

Eugene C. “Gene” Theiler, age 59 of Melrose, died Sunday, September 21, 2014 surrounded by his family and friends at his home in New Munich, Minnesota.

A Catholic Mass will be held at 11 a.m.

Eugene Clarence Theiler was born October 25, 1954 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Clarence and Bernice (Bussmann) Theiler. He was united in marriage to Donna Pflipsen on June 21, 1975 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich.

Gene was employed at Bernick’s Pepsi in Waite Park for 22 years and at Lakeville Motor Express in Waite Park for 8 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, bowling, snowmobiling, 4-wheeling, going on road trips and vacations.

Gene was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and Minnesota

Eileen M. Lockridge

Remembrance in Prayer will be 7:30 PM Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albany for Eileen M. Lockridge, 53, of Albany who passed away peacefully at her home. Rev. Steve Cook and Rev. John Taplin will concelebrate. Friends and relatives may call from 3:00 PM until the time of services at the church on Thursday.

Eileen was born May 23, 1961 in Sauk Centre to Norbert and Virginia (Hartung) Eickhoff. She is a 1979 graduate of Holdingford High School.

Eileen married the love of her life on a snowy day, November 12, 1983 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albany. She worked at Stearns Bank in Holdingford before doing daycare out of her home; and most currently working at AMPS

in Albany as a receptionist and sales person. Eileen loved her Minnesota Twins; especially Michael Cuddyer. She enjoyed being outside and mowing the lawn; her most favorite place to be was the mouth of the Gooseberry River in Duluth; where she felt a calming by the running water. Eileen’s family meant the absolute world to her; she never missed a sporting event and enjoyed getting together with family and having chicken noodle soup or a friendly fish fry. She was a sweetheart with a great sense of humor; Eileen will be dearly missed.

Eileen is survived by her husband of 30 years Alan of Albany; sons, Randy (Samantha) of Albany, Charlie (Emily Murphy) of St. Cloud; siblings, Robert Eickhoff of Huron, South Dakota, Richard (Sharon) Eickhoff of Albany, Mary Ann (Steve) White of Little Falls; mother and step father-in-law, Norma and Don of Alexandria; and grand puppy, Morgan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; nephew, Brian Eickhoff; and father-in-law, Quincy “William” Lockridge.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, Do you recommend that people continue tithing and giving while getting out of debt?

-Sarah Dear Sarah, If you’re tithing, that would refer to you being a Christian or of the Jewish faith. To the best of my knowledge, those are the only two religions where tithing is taught as a part of the faith. The word literally means “a tenth,” as in a tenth of your income.

If you are an evangelical Christian, what does Scripture say? It says to take the tithe off the top before you do anything else. You keep doing it always, not from a legalistic perspective, but because it’s part of God’s instructions on the best way to live. It gives you a baseline for giving and generosity.

Then, get yourself and your household cleaned up and in good financial shape before engaging in other acts of giving, which are called offerings. This is the normal process that Scripture outlines. But remember, God is crazy about you and loves you very much. When you give, it’s the act of being unselfish and putting others first.

-Steve Dear Steve, Being a Free Spirit just means you don’t major in details. You’re not the number cruncher, and you don’t wear a pocket protector. But being a Free Spirit doesn’t mean you can’t be a grown up.

Maturity isn’t what I’m talking about here, and neither is initiative. I’m just talking about your personality style, and how you address life in general.

In my house, I’m the Nerd and my wife is the Free Spirit. I’m a naturally detail-oriented person who likes a solid, well-reasoned plan. My wife enjoys a plan, and she doesn’t mind sticking to one, but that’s not her default button.

It doesn’t mean you’re not a grown up just because your default button doesn’t go straight to spreadsheets. And just because you’re like that doesn’t mean you can’t lay out a game plan and say, “Hey, we make too much money to waste it all. We have too much coming in every month to be deep in debt and broke!”

Being a Free Spirit just means you have to concentrate a little harder on the details, because those kinds of things just aren’t your nature. I mean, you have to pay attention to enough of Dave Says continued to pg 6

On Friday, September 19, Swanville students grades 9-12 participated in a Mock Car Crash to experience first hand the dangers of distracted driving and driving while intoxicated. In the demonstration, five students were involved in a staged car accident.

One student was arrested for “driving drunk and vehicular homicide,” another student was ejected from the vehicle and “died,” two more students were tended to by an ambulance and the Swanville First Response, and the final student was removed from the mangled vehicle by the Swanville Fire Department and their Jaws of Life and airlifted using an actual medical helicopter.

Along with the outdoor demonstration, students watched a video by the Minnesota State Troopers and participated in a question and answer session with a police officer and a Morrison County Chaplain.

Insurance carrier pulls out of MNsure; great opportunity for H.S. juniors; firewood shortage

Minnesota’s online health insurance exchange, MNsure, was in the news again last week with the announcement that PreferredOne would no longer offer plans through the exchange for next year. What made this especially newsworthy is that PreferredOne had the largest share of commercial plans sold through the exchange this year. According to figures from MNsure, 59 percent of all Minnesotans who purchased commercial plans went with PreferredOne. More than 30,000 Minnesotans must now decide whether to stay with that company by renewing directly or going back to the exchange and looking for another provider. If they renew directly with the company, they won’t be eligible for the government subsidy.

If they choose to work with MNsure again, the next enrollment period begins Nov. 15. Premium rates for next year’s health plans purchased through the exchange are expected to be released early next month.

The Minnesota House of Representatives offers a unique program for high school juniors interested in gaining hands-on experience with state government by serving as a page at the Capitol in St. Paul. The page program has been in place for 40 years and is one of only three such programs in the nation.

High school pages attend meetings with legislators, assist members during floor sessions, and participate in mock committee sessions. Eleven four-day sessions are planned for the 2015 session, and they will run from Feb. 9 until early May. Program participants are selected in the fall of each year based on a formal process that includes an application, faculty recommendation, and an essay. Stipends are available to defray expenses.

In case you need something else to worry about, I ran across this item recently: Because of our long and cold winter last year, and this spring and summer’s unusual wetness, there is a shortage of seasoned firewood in Minnesota.

The long winter depleted last year’s supply, and the wet summer kept loggers out of the woods in northern Minnesota. Some firewood companies up north have either quit selling altogether or are way behind in filling orders and not taking on any new customers.

The situation is not quite as bad farther south in the state, but the price of good firewood has certainly gone up.

Saw one quote from a suburban company selling dried oak or maple that’s cut, split, and delivered for upwards of $600 per cord. There’s also an additional fee if that delivery is in northern Minnesota, where there is little or none available.

Recalling last year’s run-up in the price of propane, those who heat with that fuel and utilize wood as a back-up are concerned about the cost of heating for the coming winter.

It takes the darkness of the night to bring out the brilliance and beauty of the stars. When we face the fear of the unknown, however, we often find the grace of God. “Though I walk through,” David said, “the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil because You are with me!”

We are all joyfully aware of God’s presence when days are filled with sunshine and warmth. All of us, however, have at one time or another, entered into valleys that are filled with ill-defined shadows that we find frightening and foreboding. We look for a light to shine over the rim of the mountain to give us the assurance that there is hope. Yet it is because of those days of sunshine and warmth that David reminds us to remember that God is also with us when all is not well and the light that faithfully guided us fades.

There are times when our “valley” may take the form of suffering. When it does, we must not forget that Jesus also suffered and understands our times of suffering. And when we feel abandoned and alone we must not forget that those whom He spent three years training to be His disciples forsook Him. And when He was laid to rest it was in someone else’s tomb.

Our Savior has walked through every “dark valley” that we will ever face.

He understands our grief. Now, He is in heaven with His Father and when we go to Him in prayer with our needs, we have the assurance that He understands our needs. He was there before us.

Good waterfowl opener expected When Minnesota’s regular waterfowl season opens one-half hour before sunrise on Saturday, Sept. 27, hunting is likely to be good, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

“The number of breeding ducks this spring was very high based on the continental duck breeding population surveys,” said Steve Cordts, DNR waterfowl specialist. “In addition, recruitment, or the number of young ducks that hatched, was also good this year based on reports we’ve heard. These young ducks comprise a large percentage of duck hunters’ bags during the fall.”

Wetland conditions were favorable and the total continental breeding population of all ducks combined was more than 49 million ducks, which is 8 percent above last year and 43 percent above long-term averages, Cordts said. However, duck numbers can fluctuate widely at this time of year for a variety of reasons.

“Some species like blue-winged teal and wood ducks are very early migrants and many move south even before the season opens, which is normal,” Cordts said.

“But many other species like ring-necked ducks and mallards will continue to increase in number as migrants move down

Local Municipality Minutes Burnhamville Township August 26, 2014 These are unapproved minutes.

The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held August 26, 2014 at Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Louis Thompson, Mike Berscheit and Bruce Johnson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Others present: Loren Fellbaum and Ervin Herdering.

Sup. Thompson made a motion to approve the minutes from the regular meeting of July 29, 2014.

Motion was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

Correspondence included notice of a Planning and Zoning meeting, early payment of state funding request form, and township mileage and sign inspection forms to be signed.

The county engineer gave the townboard an update on the replacement of the Pillsbury Bridge.

He discussed the ideas required by the DNR and the costs of span bridge vs box culvert and the ideals of fixed concrete weir vs rosgin boulder design for fish flow. The township costs should stay the same even though the cost estimates are higher than the first estimates. The board showed support for the span bridge with the fixed concrete weir.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 4996 through 5014: Rev. $2,083.00; R&B $11,815.53, Fire $11.05. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion.

Motion passed.

For the road report the contractor is still working on the road improvement list and 210th St. improvement was discussed. A board member will discuss cost sharing with Bruce Township for this road improvement. For this year contractor will work on making water flow chutes and cut in ditches on the east part of this western section of 210th St. The clerk gave a report from the primary election which had about 26% voting turn out and first use of the new lights.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $76,501.67. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:50 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on September 30, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

Burtrum City September 2, 2014 The September meeting of the Burtrum City Council was called to order on the 2nd at 7 p.m. by Mayor Allen. All members answered roll call.

Minutes of the August 4th meeting were read and approved on a motion by Kevin Wunderlich and seconded by Beau Krueger. Upon vote motion carried.

Finance report was read and approved on a motion by Beau Krueger to accept the report. Upon vote motion carried. Checks number 7284 thru 7296 were approved for payment on a motion by Kevin Wunderlich and seconded by Beau Krueger. Upon vote motion carried.

A new roof needs to be put on the bell. Will be done at the same time the hall is done.

Letters will be sent to several residents to clean up their property.

Meeting was closed to hold the public hearing.

Public hearing was then called to order by Mayor Allen. He explained the reason of the hearing was to decide if the city needs to adopt a resolution to have properties in town razed or repaired. Several citizens and two homeowners attended the meeting. Many questions about the buildings were asked and the pros and cons of the buildings were discussed.

Being no further business the public hearing was adjourned.

The regular council meeting was reopened.

Motion was made by Mayor Allen to adopt resolution number 14-1 to order the razing or repair of the property located at 117 Franklin St. within the 90 days. Seconded by Beau Krueger and carried. Kevin Wunderlich abstained from voting.

Canada goose hunting should also be good early in the regular waterfowl season.

“Large numbers of Canada geese move into the state in mid- to late September. These were nonbreeding geese from Minnesota that moved to northern Canada during the summer to molt their flight feathers. These geese are new arrivals to Minnesota and provide good Canada goose hunting opportunity early in the season,” Cordts said.

Waterfowl habitat conditions are generally good statewide with much higher water levels than last year at this time.

The DNR will post a weekly waterfowl migration report each week during the duck season. The reports are typically posted on Thursday at www.dnr.state. mn.us/hunting/waterfowl.

“If you haven’t been duck hunting in

a few years, this may be a good year to get back out in the marsh,” Cordts said.

“Hunter numbers have been very low compared to historic averages.”

Last fall, about 90,000 state waterfowl stamps were sold, which is similar to recent years but considerably lower than the 1970s, when 140,000 waterfowl stamps were sold.

The duck season structure is similar to recent years except for an adjustment in the duck season dates in the south duck zone only. In the south duck zone, the season opens for a three-day period from Sept. 27 through Monday, Sept. 29. The season is closed until it reopens Saturday, Oct. 11 and runs through Saturday, Dec. 6.

Security Breach -By Sheila Ripplinger In recent years, we have been experiencing unbelievable amounts of fraud in places that we were led to believe were secure areas.

Years back, we would hear about check fraud once in a while, and were encouraged to protect ourselves by doing away with hand written checks and start using a card and the internet which was much safer if your wallet or purse were to be lost or stolen. Most of us did just that and trusted it to be the way to go!

Theft has always been a huge problem. I can think of many times in my own family that we had to deal with items or money being stolen from us. It is a dreadful and invasive unfair experience when you are the victim of a thief!

As the world of technology expands and becomes increasingly more intricate, those who steal become more crafty at their sport of being a thief and taking what does not belong to them.

Jesus warned us in John 10:10 that the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.

Many lives have been turned in to destructive chaos due to identity theft and various forms of security breaches.

They are left to deal with the messy aftermath when it happens and most of us used to believe that it would not happen to us. Hence the enemy’s goal to cause havoc and destroy.

So what exactly does the oxymoron, ‘Security Breach’ actually mean?

Secure means to be safe against loss, at-

tack, or danger. Breach means a break, gap, or opening made by a break. How do we possibly protect ourselves from being a target for such thieves that are set out to steal? One suggestion is to do our best to keep a close watch on our accounts that should be ‘secure’. And to choose not to live in fear because that gives the thief the upper hand in his goal to destroy.

The eighth commandment in Exodus 20 is, ‘You shall not steal.’ Even though the thieves may think they are getting away with their crime, there will indeed come a time where they will get caught and have to pay for what they have done. In fact, when a thief steals from us, it is actually an offense against a Holy God. He is a Just God as well, and will not let sin go unpunished. If they do not repent in this life, they will face severe judgement in eternity.

Where can we find true security that cannot be breached? By putting our trust in God through His Son Jesus Christ. 2 Timothy 1:14 says that we are to ‘guard the good deposit that was entrusted to us with the help from the Holy Spirit who lives in us.’ The enemy will still try to break in and steal, but it will not be possible for him to take our faith. That is True Security that we can put our trust in!

A History of Minnesota’s Boundaries The Stearns History Museum and the Department of History at St. Cloud State University are proud to present a free program on Minnesota history by eminent historian Dr. William Lass.

The presentation will be held on Tuesday, September 30th, at 7:00 p.m. at the Stearns History Museum. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

Lass, Professor Emeritus, History, at Minnesota State University Mankato will be talking about his new book entitled Shaping the North Star State: A History of Minnesota’s Boundaries. Some of the questions he answers are: How did Minnesota get its shape? Why is Isle Royale part of Michigan?

What’s with that knob on top of Minnesota?

And why doesn’t it include the entirety of Lake of the Woods? What about the bump on the western border? How long has the rivalry between Minnesota and Wisconsin existed?

Lass’ interest in Minnesota’s borders stretches back to when he began teaching history at then-Mankato State College in 1960. The author of seven books and dozens of articles, Lass has touched on the topic of the state’s borders in previous work but writes that this book is “the first history to systematically describe the shaping of Minnesota.” Lass retired from Minnesota State

Mankato in 2002.
