“Exactly why don’t you want to be president again?” the reporter asked.

Coolidge looked the reporter squarely in the eyes and replied, “Because there is no chance for advancement.”

Does that mean that Coolidge had no ambition? Hardly. He was just a man of few words, and he wasn’t about to waste any on an overly ambitious reporter.

Ambition was once condemned as unnatural or even immoral in much of the world.

However, in the modern world and particularly in America, we have come to idealize self-made figures. People like steel magnate Andrew Carnegie and oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller who, without education or status, transformed the scale of business corporations. Or Frederick Douglass, the ex-slave who became a learned and articulate advocate for his people. And Elizabeth Arden, the cosmetics icon who built an empire on beauty.

America was settled by generations of immigrants who came here with a burning ambition to make something of themselves and their families. These men and women had the broadest range of opportunity in the world, so it’s logical

that ambition should flourish in America.

This ambition is essentially what the Declaration of Independence described as “the pursuit of happiness.”

Let’s face it, ambition requires hard work. Most people want to improve themselves, but not too many want to work at it.

I’m a proud member of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, named for the renowned author whose tales of overcoming adversity through unyielding perseverance and basic moral principles captivated the public in the late 19th century. His writings were characterized by a “rags-toriches” narrative.

If you are looking for a job, part of the process is to show your prospective new employers that you are ambitious.

You can’t just say you have ambition; you have to demonstrate it. You’ve accepted challenges. You’ve made things happen.

You have a lot to be proud of. And you can make a contribution to the company.

But having ambition alone is not enough. You have to know what you want, if not specifically, at least generally. You need to know what you value. The best place to start is to identify times when you were happy, proud and fulfilled, according to advice from the Mission website. Look for common denominators to determine what your true values are.

Focus on your strengths, not weaknesses. Everyone has weaknesses, and those can’t always be overcome. But they are only a problem if you let them become an excuse for not pushing forward.

When you look to your strengths, you can form goals that allow you to maximize your best points.

Ambitious people usually know how to ask for help to keep growing. Maybe someone can offset your weaknesses and help you develop your strengths. And

return the favor. Helping people breeds loyalty and support.

Follow your dreams. Once you have decided what your ultimate goal is – for now – make a plan and get started. It may not happen overnight, but it won’t happen at all unless you take the first step. As Henry Ford said, “The whole secret of a successful life is to find out what is one’s destiny to do, and then do it.” And then set even higher goals.

A man picked up a hitchhiker, a young fellow who looked like he’d been traveling for a while. The two started a conversation, and the driver asked his passenger about his plans for the future.

The hitchhiker explained he was hiking around the country, camping and taking in the sights. Then when he returned home he planned to make a fortune in the tech industry. He had an idea that was going to make him a millionaire.

“Do people really do that?” asked the driver.

“Make money in the tech world?

Sure,” came the reply.

“No,” the driver said. “I mean, do they take the time out from life instead of getting to work on making their dreams a reality?”

There is no time like the present to put your ambition to work.

Mackay’s Moral: Everyone should take some time daily to look at the road map of their ambition.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Measurements I’m sure that many of you have looked at older photographs and noticed that there are big differences in how people looked at that time, when compared to how they look now.

First today’s pictures are usually in color.

Secondly, ladies wore a dress and the guys usually wore wool pants, compared to having pants on ladies and cowboy pants on the guys today. The lady’s long hair styles and the men’s short cut styles have in some cases become opposite. However there is one thing that has not changed.

Recently I read a story about railroads and maybe some of you did too. I felt that the influence that this centuries-old tradition extended to our current world needed to be discussed.

The Roman Empire lasted from about 30 years before Christ until about 500 years after Christ. During these years, roads across Europe, including England, were created for the transfer of materials more efficiently. It also included the width of the wheels of the army chariots. The roads consisted of wheel ruts which made travel on the roads easier. Since the wheel ruts were quite deep, the wheels of the wagons using these roads also needed to be the same distance apart, or using the road would be very difficult.

The width of these ruts were originally determined by the width of two horses behinds. In actual measurements this distance was determined to be 4 feet

and 8 1/2 inches.

Remember the Roman Empire disappeared about 1500 years ago, but their influence is still felt today. As the wagon travel began to be replaced by trains, the railroad builders continued to use 4 feet and 8 ½ inches as the distance between the tracks. It was used across the whole world as the distance between the tracks and remains so today. This created ease of travel from one country to another.

There was one exception to the typical track width rule, which occurred at the time of World War II. The Russian Government forced Finland to do business with them, which included moving raw materials and mink from Finland to Russia. Finland felt that they were not treated fairly, since they sent new freight cars filled with materials to Russia and Russia sent back old dilapidated cars to Finland. To prevent further unfair treatment Finland increased the distance between the rails, there-by causing the Russians to unload the Finish cars at the border, because the Finish cars wouldn’t fit on Russia’s tracks. They also had trouble with the mink trade, since the Finn’s were sending good quality breeding mink to Russia and they were sending neutered mink back to Finland. I don’t know how this problem was solved, but I bet it is an interesting story.

Since the tracks were a standard width, railroad tunnels were a width which would accommodate the size of the standard railroad car. This limited the width of items that the railroad cars could transport.

Due to the width of most new farm machinery, these items are usually moved by a flatbed on a public highway. Fuel tanks on space rockets needed to be narrowed, since they have to be moved by train through tunnels, which have space limitations.

Stanley J. “Haskell” Schaefer

Stanley J. “Haskell” Schaefer, age 59 of Waite Park, formerly of New Munich, passed away peacefully from natural causes on Friday, September 18, 2020 at his home in Waite Park, Minnesota.

A private Memorial Mass will be held at a later date with inurnment in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in New Munich.

Stanley Julius Schaefer was born January 25, 1961 in Melrose, Minnesota to Alfred “Al” and Lorraine (Wiechmann) Schaefer.

He graduated from Melrose High School in 1979. Haskell was a cook who most recently worked at the American Legion in Waite Park. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich.

Haskell enjoyed watching sports, especially the Minnesota Twins and Vikings.

Survivors include his father, Al Schaefer of New Munich; brothers and sisters, Dianne Feddema of Waite Park, Pat Frieler of Sauk Centre, Ken (Lois) Schaefer of New Munich, Roger (Rosie) Schaefer of Sauk Centre, Chuck (Jan) Schaefer of Melrose and Judy (Steve) Keller of St. Cloud; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Haskell was preceded in death by his mother, Lorraine Schaefer on April 17, 2018; and brothers-in-law, Ralph Feddema and LeRoy Frieler.

Irene Trisko

I r e n e Bromenshenkel Trisko (1931-2020) For many years, her correspondence and stories closed with a signature phrase: “Das ist alles,” meaning “That is all.” For Irene Bromenshenkel Trisko of Sauk Centre, the finality of this line was an invitation for future contact, sharing in her beloved stories of family, friends, and faith. The line speaks to her heritage, to her German-speaking parents, Albert and Elizabeth (Meyer) Bromenshenkel, to her childhood in Ashley Township, Stearns County, Minnesota.

She left this world at the age of 89 on September 20, 2020 at her daughter’s home with family in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. A private graveside service will be held at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating.

Born April 27, 1931, Irene grew up in a bustling household of 12 siblings on a rural farm. Life during the Great Depression demanded much from families. Irene wrote, “I learned the satisfaction of having done hard work.” Perhaps Irene took to heart 2 Timothy 2:6: “It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops.”

She toiled in the garden, fed the geese and chickens, mowed the grass, baled hay, shelled beans, canned endless fall produce, hauled cabbages, rutabagas and carrots into the basement, drove horses, drove tractors, plucked feathers, picked potatoes, shoveled grain, and, like many children of her day, walked 1½ miles to school (one way). “After a full day of this, we fell into bed, exhausted,” Irene recalled of her sometimes back-breaking chores. “Morning came much too soon.”

Before she was a teenager, the world was once again at war. When her brother Leonard was drafted, she wrote long letters to him on butcher paper her older sister Rita found,

detailing the mundane happenings on the farm.

Shortly after the war, her mother passed away when Irene was 16 years old. She reflected, “I was one of the older ones still at home, and much of the work fell on my shoulders, or so I perceived. The carefree life of my teenage years soon came to an end.”

She recorded her childhood memories in a memoire title Das is Alles: Growing Up a Minnesota Farm Girl which she published in 2009. It includes many of her musings about family, holidays, letters and even loss.

Four years later, she married Raymond Carl Trisko, a Stearns County native and war veteran, on Oct. 8, 1951. Irene met him while working at Mueller VanBeck Hardware store.

Rita arranged a ride share since Ray was a neighbor. Rita told her she could thank her if something came of it but she couldn’t blame her if it didn’t work out.

Together they raised a family of seven and weathered some difficult times over their nearly 69 years of marriage, including the loss of an infant daughter. Irene wrote, “The one constant through all these storms in my life has been my faith.” In 1959, with four children under the age of seven, they started Trisko Plumbing and Heating, a business that thrived and still exists today under the ownership of their grandson Joshua Dwayne Trisko.

Because of their business promotions, they were able to become world travelers, visiting Germany, Austria, and Ireland with the Bartley Supply group of plumbers. Ray remained the love of her life to her last breath. One family member recently affirmed, “I am still amazed at how she lit up whenever he came into the house.”

Always busy, work didn’t consume all of her time. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church. For decades years, she and Ray belonged to the square dance club and often do-si-doed on the back of a decorated hay wagon in the Sinclair Lewis Days parade. She also worked for many years on an MCCL float, which her three younger children often rode.

She was either president or secretary of that group over her 48-year membership. Later, she was treasurer of the Sinclair Lewis Foundation, not because she read any of his books or was a great admirer of the author, but because she liked the people it attracted. She was president or secretary of Christian Mothers, too, all the while working at the store, of course!

While still in her house but needing assistance, she once remarked, “I had the most wonderful dream last night. Ray and I were dancing. I was in his arms, where I was supposed to be.”

Das ist alles ... that is all ... for the mortal life, but Irene has more work to do yet in heaven, where she will be lovingly embraced by her savior, Jesus Christ. Family and friends should rejoice — Irene is at peace.

She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Ray Trisko of Sauk Centre; seven children, Dwayne (Judy) Trisko and Amy Trisko (Jamie Hooper), all of Sauk Centre; Barbara (Casey) Kuzara and Donovan (Daniela) Trisko, both of San Diego; David (Kristen) Trisko of Sebastopol, California; Juleen Trisko (James Schneider) of Northome; and Caroline (Steve) Klaphake of Grey Eagle; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters Jane (Cyril) Meyer of Sauk Centre, Evelyn (Allen) Siegle of Long Prairie, and Lillian (Eli) Lucas of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; sisters-in-law Hildegard, Leona, Mildred, and Elsie Bromenshenkel; and many nieces and nephews.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Elizabeth (Meyer) Bromenshenkel; sisters Rita and Dorothy Bromenshenkel, Verena Steffes, Mary Gritzmacher-Langer, and Esther Winters; brothers Lawrence, Victor, Robert, Leonard, and Alan Bromenshenkel; and brothers-in-law Vern Winters, Norman Gritzmacher, and Dan Langer.

Lloyd E. Strassburg, 87 year old resident of Burtrum, MN, passed away Friday, September 18, 2020, at the St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, MN. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, September 25, 2020 at Faith Community Church in Burtrum, MN, with Pastor Terry Wardlaw officiating. Burial will be at Moses Dane Cemetery in Burtrum. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM on Thursday and from 10 to 11 AM on Friday at Faith Community Church in Burtrum, MN. Lloyd Strassburg was born March 4, 1933 in Round Prairie Township, Minnesota, to Emil and Ella (Poegel) Strassburg. He attended Oak Haven Country School. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Wildman on December 29, 1952 in Todd County and raised their five children. Lloyd worked a variety of jobs, primarily as a Ford mechanic for many years. Along with his wife Dorothy, he helped with the Burtrum Bean Bake and with the Burtrum Boosters 4H Club. Lloyd and Dorothy received the Helen Keller Sight Award from the Grey Eagle/Burtrum Lions Club. He enjoyed many activities including, hunting, fishing, camping, and playing cards with friends and family, as well spending time with family and grandkids.

Lloyd is survived by his children, Raymond (Marge) Strassburg of Staples, MN, Deb (Barney) VanHavermaet of Burtrum, MN, Randy (Bonita) Strassburg of Bowlus, MN, Ron Strassburg of Burtrum, MN; daughter-in-law, Debbie Strassburg of Burtrum, MN; 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy; son, Richard; two grandchildren, Kimberly and Alex; his parents, Emil and Ella; sister, Ione; brothers, Harold, Elmer, Elver, Glen and (infant) Norman.

Jerome “Jerry” Sobiech

J e r o m e “Jerry” Sobiech, 66 year old passed away Sunday, September 13, 2020 at the Long Prairie Nursing Home in Long Prairie, MN. No services are scheduled at this time.

Jerry was born on January 25, 1954 to the late Raymond and Marie (Barton) Sobiech. He grew up in the Sobieski area and graduated from Little Falls High School. He worked as an auto body repairman in his earlier years.

Jerry enjoyed deer hunting with his family and spending time with his buddies.

Joyce E. Popken, 82 year old resident of Swanville, MN, passed away on Friday, September 18, 2020 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN with Rev. Kevin Zellers officiating. Burial took place in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in Swanville, MN. Joyce was born on January 1, 1938 in Oakland, Nebraska to the late Linde and Sophia (Lohmeyer) Nelson. She grew up in Oakland and attended rural District 67 until she reached high school, graduating from Oakland High School in 1955. Joyce attended Wayne State for several summer school sessions, earning her certification to teach in rural schools, which she did for five years. Joyce married Robert Popken at Elim Lutheran Church, Hooper, Nebraska, on May 25, 1958. She and Robert farmed near Uehling, Nebraska for several years, eventually moving to Swanville in February, 1973. Joyce lived and worked on the farm the remainder of her life. She was a devoted wife to her beloved Bob. Taking long walks in the pasture was a special pleasure for Joyce.

She liked searching for and enjoying spring flowers and the brilliance of fall colors.

Eventually, Joyce found an artistic outlet in making and painting ceramic figures. Her specialty was ornaments. She sold them at craft shows, but her favorite pleasure was giving them to special people she remembered year after year. She enjoyed her family, those near and at a distance, her extended family, and the family she created by investing in her neighbors and friends.

Joyce was a strong believer in our Lord Jesus Christ and is now at peace with Him in eternity. She was an active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid, Dove Homemakers, and Northern States South Devon Association.

Joyce is survived by her husband, Robert; sons, Ryan (Sonya) Popken, Hawkinsville, GA, and Joel Popken, Swanville; grandchildren, Maggie, Ryanne and Joseph Robert Popken; brothers, Jim (Judy) Nelson of Oakland, NE, Richard (Phyllis) Nelson of Topeka, KS, and Don (Bonita) Nelson of Ord, NE. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Linde and Sophia Nelson, and her brothers, Kenny Nelson and John Nelson.

Swanville City • August 4, 2020 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, August 4, 2020. The meeting was called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Jim Molitor, Deb Wood, Norm Carlson, and Tony Maciej. Also present: None Minutes from the July 7, 2020 Swanville City Council meeting were reviewed. After discussion, a motion was made by Jim Molitor to approve the minutes. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by Norm Carlson to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The City Clerk stated she had a sales tax audit performed by the State of MN. Mayor Lange read the audit letter from the State of MN which stated the audit is complete and there are no actions to change, all is well.

The City of Swanville was notified the City could receive $26,218.00 in Federal Cares Act money. This funding is accessible for COVID-19 eligible expenses but the Coronavirus Relief Fund Certification Form must be summitted by September 15, 2020 to receive funding. After discussion Norm Carlson made a motion to sign the form to receive the funding money. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

A letter from the Initiative Foundation asking the City to consider in the budget for 2021 a contribution.

After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to contribute in 2021 $700.00, same as last year. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Reminder: Affidavits of Candidacy for the City of Swanville General Election opened July 28 through August 11, 2020 until 4:00 p.m. Expiring elected offices are: Mayor (2 year) position, and two Council members (4-year terms). Council members terms expiring are Norm Carlson and Deb Wood.

The Swanville Rural Fire Association annual meeting will be held August 25 at 8:00 p.m. Council is asked to be present if available.

Department Reports: Fire Department Report: The Upsala Fire Department raffle is September 12, please be sure to buy a ticket. They will be joining the First Response Team with their training at the end of September. The Fire

Car Crash: September 15, 2020: At approximately 7:54 a.m. received a report of a two-vehicle crash on County Road 17 near 140th Ave. in Holding Township. This location is approximately two miles east of the City of Holdingford. A 2006 Chevrolet work van driven by Marvin Skwira, 53, of Holdingford, was westbound and came to a stop on Co. Rd. 17, waiting to make a turn into a driveway. A 2014 Nissan Pathfinder was also westbound and being driven by Scott Zehowski, 34, of Rice.

Zehowski struck the Chevrolet from behind and pushed the Chevrolet into the south ditch.

The van ended up on its side, against a utility pole. Skwira was able to free himself from the Chevrolet. The Nissan was also occupied by two children, ages 5 and 9. The two children received minor injuries, were treated on scene but not transported.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Holdingford Fire Department and Mayo Ambulance. The crash remains under investigation Grandparent Scam: Grandma, Grandpa, I’m in jail and need help. I’m not a grandparent, but I can imagine how receiving a phone call like that would trigger many emotions.

That is what the scammers are going for; to get your emotions to override clear thinking.

Over the past week we have taken three fraud calls that all used the grandparent approach. In two of the calls money was sent by the victims who thought they were helping a grandchild in need. In neither case was the grandchild in trouble. The loss in the two cases was $18,000.00 in each instance. We will investigate, but the chance of recovering any funds is slim.

Please remember, law enforcement agencies and jails will never ask for cash to be mailed. Sometimes the scammer says they are a lawyer trying to help. While I’m not a lawyer, and I don’t play one on TV, they are not going to pressure you to send money in the mail either. If it’s legit, I would have to believe they would ask for a cashier’s check or some sort of legitimate electronic transfer. Not cash, not gift cards, not Google Play cards, etc. If you get this type of call, the first reaction should be to call the child’s parents and then law enforcement. The scammers never quit. Let’s get the word out and stop them.

Farm Accident: September 19, 2020: At approximately 12:32 p.m., received a call of a farm accident that occurred in a field near County Road 30/County Road 174 in Oak Township. A male party had been pinned between a pickup truck and a loaded silage wagon and was reported to have injuries to his lower extremities. When officers arrived on scene, the victim identified as Ronald Waldorf, 58, of Albany, was no longer pinned but had significant injuries to his leg. Waldorf was treated on scene by Freeport Rescue and Melrose Ambulance and was transported to the Melrose Hospital. Waldorf was flown to the St. Cloud Hospital by Lifelink Air Ambulance.

The driver of the pickup identified as Diane Boeckers, 62, of Melrose, was not injured. It was learned through investigation that the accident occurred when Boeckers and Waldorf were trying to hook the loaded silage wagon to the pickup truck. Boeckers was backing the truck up to the silage wagon when the accident occurred.

Baggenstoss shared the thank yous they received for the help the department gave to the Northern Metal Fire in Becker.

First Response Team: Doucette stated that they will be utilizing Sourcewell Grant dollars for COVID recovery. Morrison County is also offering a grant that both departments will be taking advantage of.

The LUCAS machine has arrived.

The team will be hosting a wilderness search and rescue through Central Lakes College on Saturday, September 26 at Nick Johnson and Dannielle Haus’s place. Please note that their will be helicopters and other emergency teams in the area for the training.

The Upsala First Response Team is hosting a raffle in October; please purchase a ticket for a good cause.

Maintenance Report: Tschida reported on water and sewer levels, and he stated discharging is done.

The trees were trimmed in the uptown alley. The Rec Building cleaning is completed. The streets sweeper will be here in September. Tschida plans to start flushing hydrants on MEA Thursday evening. The department is continuing to put rip rap rock around the sewer pond.

Thein Well did their annual inspection of the City’s wells; well #4 is losing capacity. They recommend cleaning and jetting the well. Tschida recommends doing the cleaning and jetting next summer.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the September Calendar.

Planning Commission: Lange reported that the commissioners walked through portions of the zoning ordinance. They discussed the Jason Malisheski permit.

They reviewed the lot split for Sheri and Steve Johnson.

The commissioners also talked about the mobile home that was moved in without a permit; the owner will be billed with a doubled permit fee.

Recreation Board: No meeting was held. The Rec Building was cleaned by Service Master while it was shut down; the City will use COVID dollars to pay for the expense.

Unfinished Business: CEDA Contract: Mayor Johnson reported that the City met with Ron Ziegler and both parties agreed that terminating the contract would be best. CEDA sent a refund check for the months that were not used.

Rental/Background Checks: Stevens reported back to the Council on the request to require landlords to do background checks on all tenants. Stevens stated that she was in contact with the League of Minnesota Cities and they have not heard of any city requiring background checks. If the City of Upsala wanted to require such a thing, they should contact their attorney.

New Business: Approve CARES Act dollars: Lange moved to approve the CARES act dollars from the State on the expenses as presented, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

Main Street Flower Box Contest: Mayor Johnson stated that Laura Douvier, the Post Office Master in Upsala, won the annual Flower Box Contest and received $25.00 in Upsala Bucks.

Proposed Budget & Levy: Lange moved to raise the City’s levy by 0.5% for 2021 to meet the City’s fiscal responsibilities, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

Speeding in Town: Mayor Johnson stated that there is quite a bit of speeding on County Road 21 as well as Highway 238; he will be talking with the Sheriff’s Office to help deal with the problem.

Medallion Hunt: The Long-Term Disaster Recovery Team met and agreed to have a monthly activity to encourage a new normal in our community. September’s activity will be the annual Medallion Hunt that is usually held during Heritage Days.

Harold “Harry” Hanson, age 95, of Sauk Centre died peacefully in the presence of his family on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at CentraCare-Sauk Centre Care Center in Minnesota.

Harold Allyn Hanson was born January 24, 1925 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Elmer and Florence (Jackson) Hanson. Harry graduated from Wilson High School in St. Paul and then proudly served three years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following his military service, he attended and graduated from Hamline University. Harry taught American history and coached one year in Kimball, Minnesota. He then moved to Sauk Centre where he taught American history and social studies and coached basketball, baseball, and golf. In Sauk Centre, he met and married his wife of 67 years, Alta (Carpenter) on May 31, 1952 at First Methodist Church in Sauk Centre. He retired from teaching in 1985 but continued writing columns for the Sauk Centre Herald, moving from sports coverage to human interest stories of residents around the area.

He volunteered his time at the St. Cloud VA and donated blood for many years. Harry’s love of history led to family vacations and cross-country travel to visit historical sites. He enjoyed all sports, but golf was his passion.

Harry was elected into the inaugural class of the Sauk Centre Athletic Hall of Fame.

He was selected as the Lions Club All-State Baseball Coach in 1975; he received Minnesota State High School League recognition for “twenty-five years of outstanding coaching;” and he belonged to the Half Century Club for newspaper professionals. Harry was a member of the First United Church of Christ, American Legion Post 67, Paul F. Donart VFW Post 2853, and a lifetime member of the Minnesota Teachers’ Association. As a member of the Minnesota Baseball Coaches Association, he held the office of president in 1974-75.

Survivors include his wife, Alta Hanson; children, Cheryl Hanson (Brad Clary) of St. Paul, Julie (Tony) Schippers of Mesa, Arizona, Rod (Sharon) Hanson of Sauk Centre, and Ken (Denise) Hanson of St. Cloud; six grandchildren, Andrea, Kelly, Cheyenne, Kaylee, and Macy; two great-grandchildren, Tori and Carter.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Florence Hanson; sister, Janet (Hanson) Allen; and granddaughter, Winona Hanson.

No services are planned Memorials are preferred to the Care Center Activities Department at CentraCare Health-Sauk Centre, 425 Elm Street North, Sauk Centre, MN 56378.

-Chris Dear Chris, If this money is designated as nonretirement funds, I’d say go ahead and cash it out. Use the money to pay down debt, and continue to stay focused working the Baby Steps. Get that debt paid off, build an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses, then it’s your turn to start investing.

The quickest way to build wealth is to get control of your largest wealth-building tool—your income. When all your money is going out the door to other people, you don’t have that tool at your disposal when it comes to important things like saving and investing. There’s some math in there, but it’s also about behavior and being intentional.

Getting out of debt dramatically shortens the distance between you and wealth.

A lot of people are having some major “never again” moments right now in the wake of COVID-19 and all the other stuff 2020 has thrown at us. They’re saying things like, “Never again will I be broke, never again will I have debt, and never again will I live with no savings to help take care of me and my family.”

Dear Dave, What exactly is a zero-based budget?

-Dean Dear Dean, Simply put, a zero-based budget is income minus outgo equals zero. If you earn $4,000 a month, and you’re doing a zerobased budget, every item you spend, save, give and invest should add up to $4,000. It’s a method of knowing where every single one of your dollars is going. Most people don’t live on a budget. They just cash checks, write checks, then they look up and wonder where all their money went. Not having a plan, especially for your money, is a bad plan.

List all your income from all sources for the month. Next, list every single expense you have each month. Rent, food, cable, phones, and anything else you pay for gets added to the list. Your expenses vary from one month to the next, which is why you make a new spending plan each month.

Now, here’s where it gets real. Subtract your income from your expenses. Ideally, this number will be zero. It might take some practice, so don’t be discouraged if everything doesn’t balance out perfectly the first few times. All that means is you need to find a way to bring one of the numbers up, the other one down—or both. But whatever you do, don’t spend a dime that’s not accounted for.

If you have a problem with spending more than you make, make some cuts in order to equalize your income and your outgo. Using coupons, cutting back on groceries, or carpooling to work are great ideas to reduce spending. If you want to generate more money, get a second job on weekends or sell some stuff.

You’re the boss of the budget—in the beginning. Once it’s committed to paper, in a spreadsheet, or on an app like EveryDollar, the budget is the boss!

Dear Motor Medics, I own a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible.

It’s an SS with the 6.2 engine and I have added a supercharger and nitrous oxide to it. I have 50k miles on the car. The problem I am having is with the top. When I put it down it seems to drag and when going up it will also drag so bad that it will stop and I have to wait a few seconds and try again unless I help it up. The problem first started about a year after I added the horsepower upgrades and started running it at the track. That has been about 3k miles.

-Tommy in Onida, South Dakota The binding can be caused by many things but the problem you are describing can be a mechanical binding issue. In our shop we would start the diagnosis by removing the power component from the top after verification of the bind. We would then operate the top manually with two people and verify the spot of the bind. At that point we should be able to see either a twist or a worn spot on the top mechanism which we would repair. It is very possible that all the added horsepower has caused the car to twist and damaged the top mechanism if you have not added suspension stiffeners or a roll bar. Once it’s repaired if the damage was caused by the horsepower the frame support issue should be address ed.

if I used the side swing but lately even that will not work most of the time. I have taken it to two different shops who both said they could not figure out what is wrong with it even though they can verify the issue I am having. They also both charged me $100 to look at it.

-Zach in Grey Eagle, Minnesota The gates can be problematic as they get older but there are a couple of common issues. If the wiper motor fails, the window will not work and the gate won’t fold down. The wiper motor has a safety switch to tell the module if the wiper arm is parked so it won’t damage the arm.

Also, if the window motor doesn’t sense the window is down all the way the gate will not fold down because a folded gate with glass up could damage the glass. Another thing is simply a dirty latch and broken wires in the jamb of the hatch. These are just a few to check.

Small Business and Non-Profit Relief Grant Program On Tuesday, September 15 2020, the Todd County Board of Commissioners approved a Small Business and Non-Profit Relief Grant Program funded through the CARES CRF (Coronavirus Relief Fund).

The grant program is for small businesses and non-profits directly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The program is designed to reimburse the costs of business interruption caused by the pandemic. The application explains the required documentation and where to send the applications.
