Workplace bullying is no bull -By Harvey Mackay

The playground isn’t the only place where you’ll run into bullies. Internet bullying has led to suicides. Office bullying is on the rise, and it’s a deal-killer no matter what business you’re in.

If you think people outgrow bullying behavior just because they get older, think again. Bullies come in all ages, shapes and sizes -- and on all rungs of the corporate ladder.

Remarkably, bullying in the workplace is among the leading reasons for employees to seek other employment.

Even more remarkably, most don’t list bullying as the reason they quit.

Instead, they suffer in silence and take their talents elsewhere.

And “suffer” they do. Scholars at The Project for Wellness and WorkLife at Arizona State University found “workplace bullying is linked to a host of physical, psychological, organizational, and social costs.” Their research indicated that stress is the most predominant health effect associated with bullying in the workplace: “Stress has significant negative effects that are correlated to poor mental health and poor physical health, resulting in an increase in the use of ‘sick days’ or time off from work.”

Can any company afford that?

In a CareerBuilder survey of over 5,600 full-time employees, 27 percent of workers said they have felt bullied in the workplace. Most of them didn’t confront the offender nor report the abusive behavior. What form did the bullying take? Workers gave these examples: • Comments were dismissed or not acknowledged: 43 percent.

• Falsely accused of a mistake: 40 percent.

• Needlessly harsh criticism: 38 percent.

• Forced into doing work that wasn’t really part of the job: 38 percent.

• Held to different standards and policies from those of other workers: 37 percent.

• Made the focus of gossip: 27 percent.

• Boss yelled at me in front of coworkers: 24 percent.

• Belittling comments during meetings: 23 percent.

• Others taking credit for work: 21 percent.

Does any of this sound familiar?

Management is responsible for keeping the workplace free of sexual, racial or other forms of harassment and inappropriate behavior. If an issue is reported, reasonable action should fol-

low. Unfortunately, sometimes the manager is the bully. If that manager has a manager, the victim needs to go to that level. They might be doing the company a huge favor by exposing the reason why so many good people in that department are heading for the hills.

The victims of bullying have to take responsibility -- it’s not safe to assume anyone else is aware of the bullying if they don’t report the problem. Bullies are notoriously sneaky. They pick and choose their targets carefully. But that doesn’t mean you’re helpless to do anything if you’re a victim.

Take charge by following these guidelines: • Recognize bullying when it occurs.

Harvey Mackay continued from page 2 Mild teasing or isolated comments, even if they’re inappropriate, don’t necessarily constitute harassment under the law.

Stand up for your rights by all means, but remember that harassment is more than just behavior that’s unwelcome.

Technically, it’s behavior that discriminates against gender, race, national origin, or some other legally protected characteristic.

• Study your policy. Most organizations have written policies that don’t just prohibit harassment but spell out the steps to take if an employee feels uncomfortable. Check out the procedures for reporting unwelcome incidents to be sure you don’t miss any options.

• Speak up to the harasser. Your first step should be to tell the person that his or her behavior, comments or requests aren’t welcome. In some cases the matter may end there. But don’t hesitate to inform management if you can’t comfortably confront the other person on your own.

• Document the behavior. Most important of all: Take notes describing each incident to keep details fresh in your memory. This will add credibility to your claim. And keep a record of your

conversations with management concerning the problem.

• Inform management. Follow the procedure for reporting harassment to the proper person. Your own manager is usually the person to start the process with, but if your manager is the one harassing you, you’ll have to go up the ladder to reach the right authority. Document your efforts to report the behavior -- dates, times, what was said, and so forth.

Obituaries Luke T. Sobania

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Luke Thomas Sobania, age 30 of Holdingford, was held on We d n e s d a y, September 21 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Opole. Burial followed in the parish cemetery.

Luke died Saturday at his home in Holdingford.

John J. Beckermann

John J. Beckermann, age 74, of Spicer, formerly Melrose, died Thursday, September 15, 2011 at the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, September 19 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Julius Beckermann, O.S.B. officiating and Rev. Marvin Enneking concelebrating.

Inurnment was at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls, Minnesota.

John James Beckermann was born February 16, 1937 in Melrose to Edmund and Rose (Berns) Beckermann. After graduating from Melrose High School, John joined the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged after four years of service. John spent many years bartending in Minneapolis and St. Paul before moving to Spicer to work for his brother at Beckermann Foods. John was an avid bowler and swimmer. He enjoyed watching all sports and going to the lake.

John was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Spicer.

Survivors include his nine brothers, Vern (Sue) Beckermann of Sauk Centre, Joe (Joyce) Beckermann of Melrose, Harvey

Luke was born October 11, 1980 in St. Cloud to Maynard and Sharon (Hellermann) Sobania. He lived in Holdingford all of his life, graduating from Holdingford High School in 1999.

Luke has been a guard at the St. Cloud Correctional Facility for Men for over 8 years. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.

Luke is survived by his parents, Maynard and Sharon Sobania, Holdingford; his brother, Josh (Amber) Sobania, Holdingford; his grandmother, Rita Hellermann, Sauk Centre, his niece, Cheyenne; and many aunts and uncles.

Luke is preceded in death by his grandparents.

Julius Beckermann, O.S.B. of St. James Parish in Jacobs Prairie, Jim (Vera) Beckermann of Juneau, Alaska, Hank (Lois) Beckermann of Blaine, Fran (Linda) Beckermann of Melrose, Pete Beckermann of Bricelyn, and Pat (Carleen) Beckermann of Centerville, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Rose Beckermann; and sister-in-law, Vinie Beckermann.

Serving as casket bearers were Jonah Beckermann, Jesse Beckermann, Luke Beckermann, Mike Beckermann, Dave Beckermann, and Steve Beckermann. Cross bearer was Paula Smith and scripture bearer was Jeron Smith.

Blanche T. Schultz, 91, of Swanville died Tuesday, September 20, 2011.

Services will be held on Friday, September 23rd at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Swanville.

September 17, 2011: At 11:24 p.m. it was reported that several mailboxes on County Road 2, between County Rd. 103 and the Morrison County line, were severely damaged around 11:15 p.m.

Bob Still Fills the Bill -By Saralee Perel

When Grant, one of our pet ducks, started limping, I made an appointment with a veterinarian.

My husband, Bob, and I got her and three other ducklings at the county fair. We didn’t know their genders until they grew up and struck passionate poses. When we named Grant, we didn’t know she was female.

The average life span for a Khaki Campbell (Grant’s breed) is seven years.

Our trip to the fair was 22 years ago. I think I know the reason she has lived

this long.

Over the phone, the veterinarian’s secretary, Carol, said, “What is your duck’s name?”

“Grant.” For some reason I started giggling. I felt rude so I covered up my laughing by saying something I thought was funny. “When we bring her in, just give her the command, ‘Grant. Sit.’” Then I blurted out, “She’ll be a sitting duck,” which put me into massive hysterics.

Carol sighed, then asked for identifying information. “Her color?”

“Her color? Don’t you think you’ll know which one in your waiting room is a duck?”

“Her color,” Carol repeated.

many pediatricians heard the same complaint: “Doctor, my baby’s quacking like a duck!”

Now, at age 22, Grant is still a happy duck. She spends her days clucking, eating and swimming. She has her own little pond and a cozy coop. But the best thing she has is Bob. Since she still has arthritis, Bob grinds the calcium and aspirin and adds it to her food.

Since she’s blind, Bob has made her play area completely flat so she doesn’t fall.

Since she gets cold at night, Bob put an electric heat lamp above where she sleeps.

And when we lose power during storms, Bob brings her inside so she stays warm in our bathtub.

All of our pets have outlived their life expectancies. I believe that’s because of the love in Bob’s heart. Taking good care of his brood is not something he “tries” to do. It is the embodiment of who he is.

When death has stolen a beloved pet, he feels crushing heartache.

Carol asked, “What is Grant’s problem?” You know where this is going, don’t you?

“She’s limping.” Then those inevitable words came out of my mouth. “She’s a lame duck.”

Fortunately, the veterinarian had a sense of humor. When I said something about ducking his questions, he shot back, “That quacks me up.”

It turned out that Grant had arthritis, which we could treat with calcium and aspirin.

When we adopted the ducklings, I was an anxious new mother who worried constantly.

So I bought a baby monitor for their coop. I kept the receiver by our bed. But I couldn’t tell the difference between a normal quack and an “SOS! Help!” quack.

I’d frequently wake my poor husband by saying, “Is that a ‘come quick’ quack?” (Try repeating those last three words four times very quickly.)

One duck’s name was Dawn. “Is that the quack of Dawn?” was not funny after the 400th time I repeated it.

Once I heard a real baby on our monitor. Freaking out, I woke Bob — again. He said, “We pick up neighborhood sounds if monitors are on the same frequency as ours. And people can hear sounds coming from our monitor.”

“Bob, mothers will think their babies are quacking!” I can imagine how

Local Municipality Minutes Burnhamville Township August 30, 2011 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held August 30, 2011 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Mike Berscheit, Louis Thompson, Bruce Johnson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; and Treasurer Pam Throener. Others present: Erv Herdering.

Sup. Johnson made a motion to approve the minutes of the July 26, 2011 regular meeting. Motion seconded by Sup. Thompson.

Motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 4526 through 4534: Rev. $501.50, R&B $11,998.37, Fire $11.40. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion.

Motions passed.

Correspondence included a letter informing the board of the District 8 meeting.

A supervisor worked on fixing the dock at Pillsbury landing.

The board is working with the county engineer to redesign the intersection of 321st Ave and County 104. Quotes will be reviewed at next month’s meeting.

Road repairs on Dutchman Drive and Dogwood Loop were

discussed. More grading was requested by the board as roads are rough.

A supervisor noticed a lot of cut wood and brush along 210th St. The board will send a letter asking the owner to remove the wood from the road and road right-of-way.

The board heard a report from the Swanville Rural Fire Association meeting.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $166,557.90 before tonight’s bills. Report was approved with a motion by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Johnson.

Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. The meeting adjourned at 7:33 p.m.

Next regular meeting will be on September 27, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

Upsala Area School students learned facts about trophy whitetail deer firsthand on Tuesday, Sept. 13 when 3 trophy bucks – Stormin’ Norman, Redwood and Shifty - visited the school. The bucks live on Steve Porter’s Trophy Whitetails preserve in Lake Bronson, MN, but they travel the upper Midwest in September of each year, teaching hunting, conservation and the mind of a trophy whitetail.

Dillan Porter, Steve’s son (right), also helps teach and answers questions. “I learned a lot about deer,” commented one Upsala first grader. The Traveling Trophy Whitetail presentation was funded by the National Cervid Foundation, Upsala FFA and the Upsala Lions.

Swanville Schools Teacher of the Year

Swanville Schools announces its 2011 Teacher of the Year, Michelle Peterson. Shelly has taught at Molly Springs Area Learning Center, which is part of the Swanville School District for many years, and has really helped develop that program. Shelly is not only the Math teacher at the ALC, she is the MARSS reporter who sends all of the required student reports to the state, and the main record-keeper at the ALC, keeping track of student credits, etc. She helps organize the graduation ceremony for the ALC. Shelly has also done some tutoring for students who are home-bound due to illness, injury, etc. In recent years, Shelly

has taught math to some of the district’s special education students.

Shelly is very active in the local Dollars for Scholars organization, helping with the various fund-raisers such as the calendar sales and the Sweetheart Dance.

She is very deserving of the Teacher of the Year Award. Congratulations, Shelly!

The Staples Area Men’s Chorus to perform in Little Falls September 24

Students from Mr. Herbes’ 6th Grade measured a big tree on Thursday, Sept.

15. A 15 foot cottonwood located across the street from Upsala Area Schools needed to be removed which led to a measurement exercise with the class. The tree, on property owned by Ralph Blonigen, was estimated to have been 75 feet in height and 6th graders (from left): Gabe Douvier, Jonathan Maciej and Andrew Prokott measured the tree’s circumference at 15’ 11” at 2.5 feet up from the base. Other class members also counted the rings. The class is studying logging in Minnesota as they prepare for an author visit with William Durbin, whose book, Blackwater Ben, they are reading.

Test scores and plans for improvement: The results of the state assessments that were taken last spring by all students in the State of Minnesota have been released and while we are still reviewing all of the information, the School District is frustrated and dissatisfied with the results.

Math: The MCA-III is a new test based on different standards that are more rigorous than in previous years and thus the results cannot be compared to prior years. However, we were below the state proficiency rates in Grades, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Two bright spots were Grade 8 where our proficiency rates were equal to the state and in Grade 11 where our proficiency rates were greater than the state.

merous strategies in the past two years including a new reading series, additional instructional help and small class sizes in the lower elementary grades. In spite of these efforts, our scores remain below the state rate for proficiency at each level.

Our writing scores in 9th grade, however, are similar to the state score. We will continue to examine what we need to do to improve our reading scores.

Improvement Plan: Your local school district developed a comprehensive plan to improve academic achievement last year for implementation this school year. This plan includes the areas of early childhood, staff development, academic support for students, alignment of the curriculum, differentiated instruction and more effective use of human resources and time. A complete copy of this plan can be accessed on the LPGE school board meeting website by going to the June 20, 2011 meeting and clicking on agenda packet and then Academic Achievement Improvement Plan under New Business.

Additional improvement steps: It is imperative that scores improve and your local district will be looking at additional strategies than can be implemented this school year in an effort to make sure that we see improvement by next school year.

The Staples Area Men’s Chorus will perform a benefit concert on Saturday, September 24, 2011, at the Sacred Heart Chapel of the Franciscan Center in Little Falls, MN. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and the proceeds from the free will offering will benefit Project Haiti.

Project Haiti was started about 23 years ago by a general surgeon from Crosby, Dr. Paul Severson and an OR nurse from Aitkin, Patty Nelson. They have travelled to Haiti at least twice per year since starting the non-profit and have been instrumental in building a hospital in Pignon, in the northern plateau. They have been successful equipping two state-ofthe-art operating rooms, with classrooms and telesurgical capabilities where annual training courses are held for Haitian surgeons. Other projects that they have completed include a landing strip, a dorm for visiting healthcare teams, an orphanage and the sponsorship of dozens of students including physicians, clergy, teachers, mechanics and other healthcare workers.

The surgical training to date has focused mainly on general surgery and gynecology. Because of the immense need, attention is turning to other subspecialties, including urology. The inaugural week of urological surgery occurred in March 2011. Because of the demands of urologi-

cal surgery, more specific equipment is needed and currently, the highest priority piece of equipment that has been identified is a C-arm, which provides intraoperative x-ray images. This is necessary for endoscopic stone surgery, which saves the patient a large incision, and therefore gets them out of the hospital and back to full activity much quicker. This equipment will also allow the development of orthopedic surgery, another high need specialty.

A matching grant for $25,000 for purchase of the C-arm has been received. The donations raised at this event will be used towards this and therefore will help them reach the matching fund. Dr. Henri Lanctin will speak about Project Haiti during the concert intermission.

The Staples Area Men’s Chorus, under the direction of Steve Hoemberg, will sing a variety of music from its concert repertoire that includes classic men’s chorus music. The chorus is made up of men from Central Minnesota who gathers weekly from September through May to rehearse in Staples. The chorus, which averages 35 members, has men as young as 15 and as old as 80.
