inspiration from Stephen Covey’s “Seven Habits of Highly Successful People,” which he describes as “the best book of all time,” Brendon was determined to answer three questions: 1. Why do some individuals and teams succeed more quickly than others and sustain that success over the long term?

2. Of those who pull it off, why are some miserable and others consistently happy on their journey?

3. What motivates people to reach for higher levels of success in the first place, and what practices help them improve the most?

I’ve heard Brendon speak on several occasions, so I invited him to speak to my Roundtable group about his results.

“The right habits lead to sustained longterm success. High performance means succeeding beyond standard norms, consistently over the long-term,” Brendon explained. “It feels like full engagement, joy and confidence that come from giving your absolute best.

“What we know about high performers,” he said, includes the following: • They are more successful than their peers, yet they are less stressed.

Shockingly, just fewer than 15 percent of the population are high performers.

Years of research led him to identify the six deliberate habits that gave people the edge. He also discovered that anyone can practice these habits with extraordinary results in their lives, relationships and careers. “High performance is not strongly correlated with age, gender, nationality, intelligence, personality, strengths, creativity, empathy, years of experience or compensation,” he said.

Brendon sites six habits in a longterm success story: Seek clarity. “Compared with their peers, high performers have more clarity on who they are, what they want, how to get it and what they find meaningful and fulfilling,” he said.

“You generate clarity by asking questions, researching, trying new things, sorting through life’s opportunities, and sniffing out what’s right for you. It comes from asking yourself questions and further refining your perspective on life.”

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Wells

When the first settlers came to this area, they had to have a supply of water. Their livestock and their family couldn’t live without it.

Some were close to a creek so the livestock could drink and the lady of the house could get water for clothes washing and family bathing. Some may be lucky enough to find a spring on their property to supply their drinking water. The natural water supply usually was a quite a distance from the house, so if it could be said that they had running water, it was the family that was doing the running.

A well in the yard was a requirement.

The first step was to “witch” for the water. This process involved a Y shaped willow stick, which when the top part of the stick was pulled apart, the lower part of the Y would point to the ground when crossing an underground water vein. This “witching” only works for some people.

The well was then dug by hand using a short handled shovel, a rope, a bucket and a plumb line. The shovel was short handled, since the well was usually about 4 feet in diameter and didn’t leave much room to work. The rope was attached to a bucket, which removed the dirt from the hole and also to offer the person digging the well an access route out of the hole.

The plumb line was used to make sure that the hole was going straight down. I didn’t mention the guy who pulled the rope with the loaded bucket out of the hole.

The hole was usually from 20 to 30 feet deep. When water was found several additional buckets of dirt were removed to

create a larger pool of water at the bottom of the well.

Most of the hand dug wells had curbing around the outside. If the well was in sandy dirt, the curbing needed to be deeper, than if it was clay soil. The curbing extended about a foot above the well and was covered with a floor of 2 inch lumber to create as tight a seal as possible. A hole in the middle of the cover was used to lower a pipe with a screen to draw water up to the long-handled pumps that most of have seen as ornamental decorations in someone’s yard. The water still had to be carried to the house and the animals, it now had to be pumped by hand, but it was more clean than the water in the creek.

I haven’t had anyone say that they recall someone driving a sand point in the early days of settlement. I know that would have been much easier than digging a well by hand.

Some of the wells were dug in the cold of the winter. I’m sure that created the saying, “colder than a well diggers rear.” See how I cleaned that up?

Some of us may remember an experience at country school, when an older kid talked a younger kid into putting his tongue on the frozen pump handle.

That created a painful situation.

When we remember priming the pump, pumping the water and carrying it to all the locations where it was needed, we realize that we had to have been in much better physical shape than we are today. And we didn’t have to go to the fitness center.

Raise necessity. “Necessity is the emotional drive that makes great performance a must instead of a preference,” he explained. “When you feel necessity, you don’t sit around wishing or hoping. You get things done.” He continued, “If I’ve learned anything from my research and a decade of interventions developing high performers, it’s that you cannot become extraordinary without a sense that it’s absolutely necessary to excel.”

Increase productivity.

“The fundamentals of becoming more productive are setting goals and maintaining energy and focus,” he said.

Clear and challenging goals are the starting point. Taking care of yourself, including good sleep, nutrition, exercise and positive emotions help you maintain energy. Keeping focused isn’t easy in the modern era with information overload, distractions and interruptions diminishing productivity.

Develop influence. “Having influence means you can get people to believe in

you or your ideas, buy from you, follow you, or take actions that you request of them,” he explained. “Of course, influence is a two-way street.”

Demonstrate courage.

“Our coaching interventions suggest that demonstrating courage is the cornerstone habit of high performance,” Brendon said. “Demonstrating courage doesn’t mean you have to save the world or do something grandiose. Sometimes, it means taking a first step toward real change in an unpredictable world.”

Obituaries Jerald J. “Jerry” Folta Jerald J. “Jerry” Folta, age 77 of Grey Eagle, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 22 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Parish prayers will be held at 7 p.m.

Thursday evening at the church.

Jerald James Folta was born October 29, 1939 in Elmdale Township, Morrison County, Minnesota to William and Lillian (Johnson) Folta. Jerry graduated from Upsala High School in 1957 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps, enlisting on August 1, 1957 through his honorable discharge on June 30, 1959. On November 27, 1961 he was united in marriage to Lorraine Ostendorf at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Jerry worked as a certified welder at Stearner’s and most recently was a security officer for 25 years at St. John’s University. He also volunteered with the Melrose ambulance squad.

Jerry enjoyed fishing, hunting, and doing taxidermy work on the side. He enjoyed the companionship of his dogs and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Folta of Grey Eagle; children, Bradford (Erna) Folta of Baxter and Pamela (Richard) Roerick of Avon; five grandchildren, Ashley (Jon) Douvier, Krista (Ben) Douvier, Bradford (Joseph) Folta, Jr., Katherine (Joseph) Folta, and Emily Roerick; five great-grandchildren, Regan, Rowan, Rori, and twins, Evelyn and Eleanor Douvier; brother, Bill Folta of Seattle, Washington; twin sister, Janet Parnell of Fort Collins, Colorado; and sister, Rachel Folta of Seattle, Washington.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lillian Folta; and brother, Duane Folta.

Serving as casket bearers will be Katherine Folta, Bradford Folta Jr., Krista Douvier, Ashley Douvier, Emily Roerick, Jon Douvier, Ben Douvier, and Joseph Owens. Cross bearer will be Regan Douvier and scripture bearers will be Pamela Roerick and Bradford Folta.

Tillman “Jim” Knapp The mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Tillman “Jim” Knapp, age 91 of Albany, will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, September 21 at the Church of All Saints, St. Hedwig in Holdingford.

Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Tillman died Saturday at the Mother of Mercy Campus of Care in Albany. There will be a visitation after 10:00 Thursday at the church.

Tillman was born August 26, 1926 in Albany to Peter and Amalia (Hondl) Knapp.

He married Genevieve “Jenny” Reiter on June 6, 1950 in St. Boniface Church in Cold Spring. Together, they raised 6 children while living in various Minnesota and South Dakota towns. He farmed between 1952 and 1957. He worked for the Railroad for a short time and also owned a hardware store for 4 years before joining Cold Spring

Granite. His job at the Cold Spring Granite Company caused him and his family to make several moves before he finally settled near Holdingford where he farmed from 1972 until 1990. After retiring from farming he moved into Holdingford, he was a substitute bus driver for the Holdingford schools for a few years and then he worked at the Albany Hardware store for 14 years. He was a member of the Church of All Saints, St. Hedwig and the Knights of Columbus.

Tillman is survived by his children, Rose Mary (Greg) Philippi, St. Cloud; Jerry Knapp, St. Joseph; Patty (Art) Dyer, Gold Hill, Oregon; Dan (Deb) Knapp, Avon; Ken (Donna) Knapp, Avon and Carol (Will) Hellmann, St. Joseph. Cody David Babineau Babineau, Cody D. age 21, of Blaine, born April 25, 1996, passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 23, 2017.

Cody had many passions in life, he loved wrestling and all his wrestling buddies. From the time he began to talk, he wanted nothing but tractors and cows - he loved everything about farming and living in the country. Cody had always dreamed of having a coon hound and as soon as he moved to the country, he bought Jager

who became his inseparable companion.

Cody loved to fish, hunt and spend time at the cabin with his family as well as canoeing in the BWCA wilderness with his dad and little brother. Family was always very important to him and if there was ever an event, Cody would make time to be there.

Cody is preceded in death by his great grandparents.

He is survived by his parents, Tom (Lisa) Babineau; sister, Kristin; brother, Mitchell; grandparents, Herb (Sharon) Wielenberg, David (Mary) Babineau; great-grandfather, John Chapdelaine; along with many other loving relatives and friends.

Margaret “Margie” Manning Margaret Brigid Wyrsch Manning, of Olathe, Kansas passed away August 22, 2017 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, f o l l o w i n g surgery for an aortic aneurysm.

Margie was taken ill at her summer home at Mound Lake, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass for Margie will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. with a Rosary at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 555 West Main, Gardner, Kansas. A lunch will be served at the Church following the Mass.

Margie was born in Kansas City, Missouri on January 16, 1948, the fourth of eight children of Frederick R. Wyrsch and Catherine O’Connor Wyrsch.

Margie is survived by her husband of 32 years, Patrick Manning of the home, and her stepchildren, Michael Manning, (Tracy), Kathleen Manning, and Kellie Manning Bennett (Ryan). She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Daniel, Lily, Maddy, Annabelle, and Jameson Manning, Hunter Chavez, and Owen Bennett.

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Theresa Stangler, age 89 of Albany, will be 1:00 PM, Friday, September 22 at the Church of Seven Dolors in Albany. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Theresa died peacefully at her home on Sunday. There will be a visitation at 11:30 on Friday at the church in Albany. Arrangements are being made by the Miller-Carlin Funeral Homes.

Theresa was born September 22, 1927 on a farm near Langdon, North Dakota to John and Margaret (Schafer) Hiltner. She grew up in North Dakota. She married Jerome Stangler on September 27, 1949 in Langdon North Dakota. The couple moved to a farm near Albany and raised their 9 children and farmed together for over 50 years. Theresa was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany and the Seven Dolors Christian Mothers.

She was preceded in death by her brother Fred Wyrsch in 2013 and nephew, Tyler Deeds in 2004 A graduate of Loretto Academy and the Avila University School of Nursing, Margie also received Master’s degree in Human Resources Development from Webster University. She served with distinction in the nursing profession, particularly psychiatric nursing in San Francisco, Sydney, Australia, and the Kansas City area. She ended her nursing career with the Johnson County Mental Health Center. Margie was instrumental in the 1982 founding of Families for Mental Health, Inc., which serves family members with loved ones with severe and persistent mental illness, and was active in its operations until her death. She was appointed in July 2015 to the Governor’s Behavioral Health Service Planning Council for the State of Kansas and was recently appointed co-chair of its subcommittee for aging. She also served on the Osawatomie State Hospital Citizens Advisory Committee.

Margie touched many lives with her love of caring for people. She was a loving stepmom and grandmother and you could always count on her smile. She was also active in her community as a member of the Daughters of Erin, the Celtic Fringe, the Ladies Swiss Helvetia Society, and the Kansas City Swiss Society.

Doris M. Budde, age 57 of Albany, passed away peacefully at her home in Albany with her beloved family at her side on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. She fought cancer the way she lived her life, with strength, grace, a strong faith and complete trust in

God’s plan.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 16 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Edward Vebelun, O.S.B. officiating and Rev. Julius Beckermann, O.S.B. concelebrating. Inurnment was in the parish cemetery.

Doris was born August 6, 1960, to Joseph and Isabelle (Mueller) Zimmer in St. Cloud, MN. After graduating from Apollo High School, she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from College of St. Benedict. She then worked at Edina Realty and Metropolitan Federal in the Twin Cities from 1983 until 1994.

Doris was united in marriage to Ronald Budde on July 9, 1994 at St. Joseph’s Church in St. Joseph, MN. They made their home on

Aloys “Al” Wander, age 90, of Belgrade, died Friday, September 15, 2017 surrounded by his family at CentraCare Health Hospital, Sauk Centre.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m.

Tuesday, September 19 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa with Rev. David Grundman officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Aloys Hubert Wander, son of Michael and Theresa (Athmann) Wander was born July 12, 1927 in Spring Hill Township, Stearns County, Minnesota. Aloys attended school and completed the eighth grade in a one room country schoolhouse. On June 16, 1953, Al was united in marriage to Jeanette Anna Rieland in Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa, Minnesota.

In 1955, Al and Jeanette purchased a farm outside of Belgrade where they raised their ten children. Al worked hard as a farmer milking a herd of nearly 50 cows and raised crops on their acreage. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, gardening, and gambling at the casinos. He was an avid Minnesota Twins

their dairy farm west of Albany where she found her greatest joy in being a wife and mother to their three wonderful children, Nick, Chris and Katie – always loving, guiding, teaching and supporting them.

She had many interests and enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, reading, cooking, baking, scrapbooking and crafting.

She spent many hours volunteering for her children’s religious education, school and sports activities and above all, she treasured spending time with family and friends.

Doris is survived by her loving husband, Ron, and children, Nick, Chris and Katie of Albany; father, Joseph Zimmer of Cold Spring; siblings, Marilyn (Jeff) Cupka of Brooklyn Park, Kathy (LeRoy) Beuning of Avon, David (Kathy) Zimmer of Royalton, Chuck (Karen) Zimmer of Litchfield and Deb (Randy) Lange of St. Cloud; and all of her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Isabelle Zimmer.

Serving as urn bearer was Dave Zimmer. Cross bearer was Heidi Eiynck and scripture bearer was Lora Silvers.

Honorary bearers were Marilyn Cupka, Kathy Beuning, Deb Lange, Lori Rolfs and Krista Budde. Eucharistic Ministers were Sister Alice Imdieke, Edna Goebel, Sharon Weyer and Sheela Arceneau and serving as gift bearers were Ken Zimmer and Sarah Lange. The reader was Jim Welle and music was by the Van Overbeke family.

Baseball fan. Al was known for telling jokes and had a keen sense of humor that his family will carry on.

Al was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Catholic United Financial, and Elrosa Senior Citizens.

Survivors include his loving wife 64 years, Jeanette; children, Steve (Linda) Wander of Cold Spring, Ken Wander of Becker, Mike (Deb) Wander of Anoka, Kathy (Mark) Morrow of Plymouth, John (Deb) Wander of Elrosa, Bob (Judy) Wander of Paynesville, Vince (Sandy) Wander of Paynesville, Dan (Caroline) Wander of Dayton, Joe (Lois) Wander of Oak Grove, and Marie (Tom) Fischer of Glenwood; 27 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; two sisters, Lorraine Schwieters and Monica Barten; other relatives and friends.

Al was preceded in death by parents, Michael and Theresa Wander; and his siblings, Anna Mae Lensing, Eleanor Winter, Edwin Wander, Christ Wander, Ray Wander, and Alfred Wander.

John A. Spanier

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, S e p t e m b e r 21, 2017 at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Lake Henry for John A. Spanier Jr., age 86, of Lake Henry who passed away peacefully with family by his side on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at Koronis Manor Care Center in Paynesville.

Burial with military honors will take place in the parish cemetery.

John was born on September 5, 1931 in Lake Henry to John and Helena (Meyer) Spanier. Per his request, he took the 7th and 8th grade exams together and graduated at the age of 12. He farmed with his dad and also later worked at the Cold Spring Granite sheds. He purchased the old Helmstetter place and farmed until being drafted in the US Army in 1956. He served two years, being stationed most of the time as a radar operator on Taboga Island, Panama. While there, he reported he learned a little Spanish and how to “really” drink beer.

He married Armella Braegelmann on May 12, 1959 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Richmond. They made their home on the old Helmstetter place where they farmed and raised six children. They enjoyed 50 years of marriage and spent many hours enjoying their children and grandchildren.

John was active in the Othmar Braun American Legion Post #612 as a member of the drill team and resident piano player. He was also active with St. Margaret’s Parish, serving in the choir and as Eucharistic Minister, Rosary Society, Catholic United Financial, St. Josephs Men’s Society and the Knights of Columbus Council #3820.

John was a charter member of the Lake Henry Lions and a stalwart member of AA; attending meetings faithfully and providing

John had a love for music at an early age and began playing piano by ear at the age of six. Music was important all of his life and much of his retired life was spent playing the piano and bringing joy to others. He belonged to the Toot’n Tappers in Belgrade for many years and later had a monthly four gig circuit providing musical entertainment for assisted living and manor care facilities.

Once a resident of Washburne Court and later of Koronis Manor, he continued to play piano whenever asked or “not asked” up until a few days before his death.

I have about $10,000 in student loan debt, but my mom and dad have a real issue with their roof.

It’s leaking in places to the point they have to set buckets around to catch the water, and I’ve gotten repair estimates of $3,000 to $5,000.

They’re good, hard-working, blue collar folks, but they’re less fortunate financially and have more debt than I do. What should I do first — help them fix the roof or pay off my student loan debt?

-Jordan Dear Jordan, You’ve got a great spirit, man. If I woke up in your shoes, I’d probably help them fix the roof first. The only way I would do that, though, is if they agree to let you help them address the reasons they don’t have any money. If you have the cash, go ahead and pay for the roof. But let them know they must pay you back by getting some financial counseling.

I know you love your mom and dad, and they work too hard to be broke. We’re not talking about you shaming or condemning them in any way. Talk to them in a loving, caring way, but you have to address the situation. If they’ve worked all their lives and can’t come up with $3,000, something’s wrong. The fact they don’t have any money is the symptom. The problem is they’ve mishandled the dollars they earned. Even if you don’t make a lot, you can have cash set aside for emergencies if you manage it well.

You’re a young guy making good money, so there’s no reason you can’t do both things quickly. Help your folks with the roof, then turn around and knock out that student loan debt. It won’t be a huge

burden to you. But remember, you fixing their lives without them fixing their lives will be a burden — to all of you!

-Beth Dear Beth, Something like that depends entirely on your overall financial situation. Buying a $100 bottle of wine is pretty stupid if you only make $20,000 a year. It’s not unreasonable, though, if you make $200,000 a year. Having a great incometo-asset ratio and living debt-free gives you the opportunity to relax and enjoy a few things.

You’ve got to take the whole picture into account. I know a guy who makes well over $15 million a year, and he bought a $200,000 car. As a ratio, that’s a very small percentage of his income. So, it’s kind of silly to say an item is too expensive, or an irresponsible purchase, based on price alone.

Marian Kuper

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Marian Kuper, age 98 of Albany, will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 23 at the Church of Seven Dolors in Albany. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Marian died at the St. Benedicts Senior Community in St. Cloud. There will be a visitation after 10:00 AM, Saturday at the church.

Arrangements are being made by the MillerCarlin Funeral Homes.

Marian was born June 8, 1919 to Martin and Antonia (Nier) Jesh in Albany.

She attended parochial and high school in Albany. In 1942, she went to St. Paul and was employed in the chemical lab at Federal

Clarice L. Pfefferle

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 am, Saturday, September 16, 2017 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Long Prairie, for Clarice L. Pfefferle, age 105, of Long Prairie who passed away on Tuesday at CentraCare Health Systems-Long Prairie.

Fr. Omar Guanchez officiated and burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Long Prairie.

Clarice L. Meier was born July 15, 1912 in Worthington, Minnesota, the daughter of Frederick and Amanda (Krusemark) Meier. She grew up and attended school in Worthington graduating in 1930. She then attended Worthington Normal School to earn her teaching certificate. She taught in country schools near Worthington. She married Lawrence “Jack” Ketel in 1937. He died in 1939. Clarice returned to finish her education at Mankato State Teachers College and then taught school in Hollandale from 1941 until 1944. She later moved to Long Prairie to teach in the public elementary school from 1944-1949. She married A. J. Pfefferle in 1949 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

He died in 1969. Clarice started teaching at St. Mary’s School in 1969 until retiring in

I r m a Lunceford, 89, of Long Prairie, passed away on September 16, 2017.

Funeral services for Irma will be held at Peace United Church in Long Prairie on Friday, September 22, 2017, 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Gary Taylor officiating. Friends may call on the day of the funeral from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m at the church. Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, Long Prairie.

Irma was born August 30, 1928, in Round Prairie Township, Todd County, to Jonas & Helen (Cadotte) Bebault. On April 28, 1947, she married Norman Kamphenkel.

Irma worked in the school as a cook for many years until her retirement. Irma later married Adrian “Tots” Lunceford on September 23, 1980. Many retirement years were enjoyed wintering in California, where they made new friends and enjoyed family visits. Irma enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, and music.

She especially enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Irma was a member of Peace United Church; she was very active

Cartridge during WWII. Later she worked as a dental assistant. She married Thomas Tomsky in 1943 and he died in 1958. After returning to Albany, she was employed in various establishments and worked at the elementary and Jr. High school for seven years. She married Erwin Kuper on November 27, 1976. She was a member the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, the Christian Mothers, the St. Ann’s Society, and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Marian is survived by her son, Jim Tomsky, Princeton; her grandsons, Aaron Kuper and Nick Kuper, three greatgranddaughters and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Thomas and Erwin, her sisters, Rose Hofmann, Ursila Backes, Hildegard Farmon, Angela Jesh; brothers, Roman Jesh, Othmar Jesh, Andrew Jesh, Carlos Jesh and Ralph Jesh. She is also preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Karen Tomsky.

Clarice was a member of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and its Christian Women’s Group. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Long Prairie Memorial Hospital and Nursing Home Auxiliary, Long Prairie Country Club, Long Prairie Literary Club, a lifetime member of both the Christie Home Historical Society and the Todd County Historical Society, and numerous Bridge Clubs. Clarice was always interested in her family, her two precious grandsons, her home, yard and flowers, baking, Scrabble, playing cards, going for walks and sitting on her deck. She enjoyed the friendship of many former pupils and friends.

Clarice is survived by her daughter, Mary (Doug) Schmidt, Long Prairie; grandsons, Michael (Maria) Schmidt, St. Anthony Village, Matthew Schmidt, St. Louis Park; great-grandsons, Jacob & John; sister-in-law, Dolores Meier, Worthington; special niece, Gail Gabler, Long Prairie, nieces, nephews, and many friends.

She is also survived by her exchange granddaughters, Isabel Nache, Germany, Annalena Sahrhage, Germany, Laura Wieland, Germany, Christiana Tapparelli, Italy, and Marta Alonso Arias, Spain.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Jack and A.J., two brothers Raymond and Lawrence Meier, two sisters Luella Redder and Edna Pfeil, and dear life-long friend Lorraine Nerenz.

A Small Business Story Example;

By John Young Julie loves pizza. She loves to create and make unusual pizza combinations and has heard forever that, “you need to go into pizza making business!” So, she does.

She will make her Signature Pizza as her primary offering since that has been very popular with everyone who has ever tried that pizza.

Julie is located in a small town, so she knows she will need to be doing the bulk of the hours in her take and bake pizza shop to control expenses.

Julie put together her business plan with her business to be open 8 hours a day for six days a week (48 hours of open hours per week). For the first year, she plans to run the pizza shop by herself to get the business up and running.

In her business plan, she calculated her expenses for the shop and what it would take to create each pizza. She estimated her expenses would be about $8.00 for her signature pizza which will be the majority of her sales. Expenses will vary depending on the quantity of pizza sold each week, but she feels this is a solid estimate for her business plan.

Julie knows from her research that most people that pick up a take and bake pizza do so within 10 miles of their home.

Her research has shown her that in that distance from her shop, she has about 500 homes.

Her goal is to sell pizzas to about one-quarter of the homes each week in her area. She knows from her research that each home averages about one and a half pizzas per order (some order one, some order two and so on). Using her math, she estimates she can sell to 125 homes about 187 pizzas each week. So, her estimate of yearly expenses is about ($8x187 pizzas x52 weeks) $77,792.

Julie would like to be able to make the average household income for her area which would put her at making about $40,000 per year. If she sells 187 pizzas each week, times 52 weeks per year, she would be selling 9,724 pizzas per year. To make her minimum of $40,000 annually after the $8 per pizza expenses, she would need to charge over $4 more per pizza to make her target.

To give a bit of fudge factor, she initially plans to sell pizzas for $14 each or two for $25. Using her one and a half average, she can estimate that about half her homes will order one pizza (63 homes), and onehalf of the 125 homes per week will order two pizzas (62 homes). That would give her a weekly income of 63x$14 + 62x$25 = $2,432 in revenue for a week. Take out the expenses for 187 pizzas (63 for one pizza

purchase and two pizzas for the other 62 homes) and Julie is left over with ($2,432 - $1,496) $938 potentially remaining after expenses or an estimated $48,776 per year.

This business example is an overly simplified look at one part of the money side of a small business startup. Now, what happens if Julie doesn’t make her monthly estimates.

Let’s say that Julie only sells about 200 pizzas her first month. Just using her estimated numbers above on expenses and such, she would have allocated $8 per pizza or $1,600 toward business operating costs, and $858 would be remaining after expenses. But, those numbers for expenses are based on the projection of over 175 pizzas each week. Expenses like rent, electric, phone, insurance, advertising are somewhat consistent expenses which might be $2,500 minimum per month. Once Julie adds in her material expenses for making the 200 pizzas, she might be losing a few thousand dollars until she can get closer to her base level estimates for profitability.

How can Julie or any small business start-up in a small town succeed?

First, Julie in our example would need to put about one year of expenses and payroll away into an account so she could survive one year without selling a single pizza. In this example, if she had somewhere between $100,000 and $150,000 in reserve, her chances of riding out the startup business growing pains would be considerably helped!

Second, Julie needs the support of her local community. She is bringing a service to this small town area and if those in the community like the convenience of having a quality take and bake pizza shop locally, then need to support the business. In this example, you figure about 1/2 the homes in her area will do business with her twice a month. While that might be a bit high, you can see if that falls to 1/2 the homes only buying pizza once a month, she is nearly out of business!

As those that live in small communities, we have to keep in mind that many of the conveniences we have with local service or product providers are only there as long as the owners can make a reasonable living. If your local business owner can’t make ends meet because too many are buying from outside the community to save a couple of dollars, in time, those convenient local businesses will be gone!

Burnhamville Township August 29, 2017 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held August 29, 2017 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Mike Berscheit, Louis Thompson, and Bruce Johnson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener.

Others present: Ron Schmidt and Erv Herdering.

The minutes from the regular meeting of July 25, 2017 were approved as presented on a motion

by Sup. Thompson. Motion was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township board members received letters from Planning and Zoning which the board saw no issue, notice of next year’s town aid from the State of Minnesota, Census, notice of feed lot building from county, and Swanville Rural Fire Association meeting August 29.

There was discussion of heavy rains doing damage to a few roads.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5464 through 5474: Rev. $606.16; R & B $27,824.13. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motions passed.

A representative of the land owners on Forest Lane presented a petition asking the township to take over maintenance of that road. The board discussed with him the hearing process. Sup. Berscheit made a motion to hold a

road hearing on Friday, September 22, 2017 at 7 p.m. on the Forest Lane road. Motion was seconded

by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

Supervisors are working on weed inspections. Some land owners have taken care of thistles. Some land owners asked if someone around here will cut the thistles for them. Supervisor will look into it.

In the road report a lot of gravel was applied to township roads this month. Board members will look at lake access again. Still a problem with rocks on 168th St. The culvert on 321st may be plugged. Supervisors still need to find someone to take the stumps and rocks for the 210th St. improvement.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $122,498.45. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m.

Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center and the road hearing will be Friday, September 22, 2017 at 7 p.m. on Forest Lane.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported that the work on Chickadee had been completed. The paving projects are scheduled to begin mid September till approx. early October. Ron reported on two calls of trees hanging over the road on Ascot Rd., Ray had also checked them out. Because of safety issues it was decided to trim the trees, the landowners were notified and both Ron and Ray brought bids. Ron made the motion to hire Carr’s Tree Service to do the work, Mike made the second. Motion carried.

This year’s mowing project was discussed with the contractor present. No return calls from the contractor, grass clumps on the road and not done in time frame that was required. The contractor agreed to a reduction on the statement and will resubmit for next month. The crack filling project will wait until next spring unless there would be a significant cost increase.

Additional agenda item: The 2020 census will be handled by the Todd County GIS department.

Helping Hands Outreach: Fall Health Fair Join Helping Hands Outreach at the Holdingford Legion Club on Wednesday, October 4 from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. for their Fall Health Fair. When Do I Need a Septic System Compliance Inspection?

A common question received by Planning and Zoning staff is what triggers the need for a professional septic inspection?

Todd County Planning & Zoning requires that a compliance inspection be completed if applying for a building permit involving a bedroom addition, dwelling replacement, applying for a variance or conditional use permit, or when a property transfer takes place. Regular inspections triggered in this manner help ensure that systems throughout the county are functioning as intended. Inspectors will conduct a visual inspection of the septic tank and the drain field to determine if the septic system meets Minnesota Pollution Control Agency requirements. If everything looks good, they will issue you a report of compliance that is considered valid for 3 years. If the system fails to meet

MPCA requirements, the system would need to be updated or repaired within 1 year.

Regular monitoring and scheduled maintenance by homeowners helps ensure that your septic system works correctly and protects you, your neighbors and our natural resources. If you are a homeowner with a private septic system, there are a few things you can do to help ensure your septic system operates as it should. These include having a licensed professional pump and clean your septic tank every 2 to 3 years, monitoring the water use in your home and making sure that nothing goes down the drain that could harm your system such as non-degradable items, excessive use of household cleaners, etc. Additional information on septic system operation can be obtained at MN Pollution Control’s web site www.pca.state.mn.us.
