It’s never too late to appreciate -By Harvey Mackay

Once upon a time there was a little dog that was unhappy with his life. As he lay in his backyard, he spotted a cat on top of a wall. “I wish I could climb walls like that cat!” he thought.

Walking by a pond, the dog saw a goldfish swimming in the water. “I wish I could live in the cool water like you,” he said.

The goldfish replied, “I wish I could roll on the grass like you.”

Later he spotted a sparrow in a tree. “I wish I could fly like you!”

The sparrow replied, “I wish I could play all day long like you, instead of having to gather twigs to build my nest and spend all day searching for food.”

The dog met other animals during his walk, all complaining about their lives. Finally, he realized his life was good, and started appreciating everything he had.

This story from the February 2021 issue of “Bits & Pieces” sums up the importance of appreciating what you have, which you may not realize until someone reminds you. When you think you have it tough, consider that many others are much worse off and would gladly change places with you.

My friend Jack Canfield said: “By taking the time to stop and appreciate who you are and what you’ve achieved – and perhaps learned through a few mistakes, stumbles and losses – you actually can enhance everything about you. Self-acknowledgment and appreciation are what give you the insights and awareness to move forward toward higher goals and accomplishments.”

We live in a materialistic and competitive society. Often people see what others have, and they want it too. Similarly, we compare ourselves to others. But do you know what

happens when people try to keep up with the Joneses? They refinance.

It’s important that we continue to live in the moment. Remind yourself of all the positives in your life: family, friends, job, health, talents, hobbies, prized possessions, cherished memories and challenges you have overcome. I’m willing to bet that your list will be longer than you imagined.

Look at the wonders of the world around you. Go for a walk and enjoy the fresh air. Find a distraction to help you reset your attitude.

My wife and I have taken an interest in bird watching and put several feeders out. Golf is another big release for me.

Getting together with friends may not always be advisable right now, but that doesn’t mean you can’t talk to buddies on the phone or through Zoom meetings. Socializing is important.

Whenever I’ve had difficult moments in my life, such as starting my envelope manufacturing company years ago, a visit with someone who was sick or having difficulty would snap me back into reality and help me appreciate everything that I had.

That’s not advisable these days, but there are other wonderful opportunities you can explore. Volunteer at a homeless shelter or foodbank. Be a Big Brother or Big Sister to a child who needs a role model. Record books for the visually impaired. Lending a helping hand to someone less fortunate enables you to appreciate what you have, so embrace the power of giving. You can never take life for granted.

Develop a gratitude mindset. If you are not grateful for what you have, it is doubtful you will be grateful for what you will get. THANK

My mother always told me that a smile is an inexpensive way to improve my looks. And I remember fondly one of her favorite bits of advice: “If you’re happy, tell your face.”

John Lennon, the legendary member of “The Beatles” said: “When I was five years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up.

I wrote down ‘happy.’ They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.”

I couldn’t agree more.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Home-made Tractors

When farm tractors first appeared, they were very heavy, clumsy, slow, awkward and were just very hard to use. They were equipped with steel wheels covered with steel lugs for traction. The farmers needed a machine that was faster and more maneuverable.

In the early 1920's the price of tractors ranged from $395.00 for the Fordson to $1000.00 for the John Deere Waterloo Boy. Compared to today's tractor costs, they were really cheep.

However when comparing the farm income in the 1920's to today's farm income, the tractor price compared to the farm income ratio is very similar.

The local farmers didn't have sufficient cash to buy a new tractor. They were also very conservative, constantly looking for a more economical solution. Some of them found their solution in the junk-yard.

When the early automobiles were produced, they were not built to go 100,000 miles. The vehicle's parts were rather weak and roads were virtually nonexistent. They followed the horse and buggy trails “over the river and through the woods,” which was very destructive to automobiles. The lubricants were of inferior quality when compared to today's lubricants. Many cars were junked after a few years of use.

The enterprising farmers bought a car at the junk yard from $5.00 to $25.00, took it home and made a tractor out of it. The longer 4-door sedans were cut off behind the front doors, leaving only the frame, the rear axle and the rear wheels. The frame was then cut off and the axle was moved forward to almost the back of the front doors. Rubber truck tires replaced the original rear tires. Heavy metal bracing was added to the frame to create additional strength.

The rear differential was replaced with a more powerful rear end. The doors and maybe the roof were removed and a hitch was installed on the frame in back. You now have a home-made tractor.

These home-made tractors were quite maneuverable, lighter weight and moved faster than the factory made tractors. They were not usually used for heavy work like plowing, but were totally adequate for pulling wagons loaded with grain, hay or wood. They were also sometimes used to pull a drag on a newly planted field.

The appearance of these home-made tractors varied greatly. Some of the converted coupes looked like the original coupe with big tires in the rear. Some of the converted sedans took on the appearance of a four wheeled, motorized frame with a seat attached.

These inventions continued to appear until after WWII, when the economic conditions and new engineering made them impractical.

From the Desk of Pastor Bruce I was reminded last week of the goodness of God. His Word says, in James 1:17-18 “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of first fruits of all he created.”

Sometimes in life, we experience bad things. God’s Word tells us to expect that, John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” So, when bad things happen in our lives we get discouraged and down. But because Jesus has overcome the world, we ought to look and see what will happen next, look for the upside so to speak. Even the bad things in our life can be good if we wait for the good.

So, we have a really good pancake recipe that uses buttermilk. But sometimes, we have milk in the fridge that does not get drank in time and turns bad. My wife told me the other day, do not drink the milk toward the back of the refrigerator, we will use that for pan-

Marvin J. Kemper

Marvin J. “Marv” Kemper, age 80 of Melrose, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, August 26, 2021, at his home in Melrose, Minnesota after a short battle with acute myeloid leukemia.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held We d n e s d a y, September 1 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Deacon Ernie Kociemba assisting. Inurnment was held in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Marvin Joseph Kemper was born March 5,1941 in Melrose, Minnesota to Joseph and Bernadine (Austing) Kemper. He graduated from Melrose High School – Class of 1959. He enlisted in the United States National Guard from 1959 to 1963. On July 20, 1963, he was united in marriage to Betty Breth at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Marv was an independent bulk milk hauler for 33 years.

He enjoyed camping, bowling, watching TV especially Western shows, and going out to eat with Donnie and Bridgett Salzmann, Ervin and Bertha Bueckers, and Shirley Hiltner. He will be missed by many including his dog, Chloe who was by his side when he passed.

Marv was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, American Legion Post 101, Knights of Columbus Council #1633, and a former member of the Melrose Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Kemper of Melrose; children, Shannon (Mary Beth) Kemper of Melrose, Stacy (Jess) Roering of Lino Lakes, and Glen (Sara) Kemper of Melrose; seven grandchildren, Wes (Mariya) Kemper, Wyatt (Angel) Kemper, Colton and Nolan Mueller, Benjamin, Max, and Maddie Kemper; two greatgrandchildren, Ivy and Banks Kemper; two step-grandchildren, Jesse and Jenna Roering; sisters, Marcella Radermacher of Sauk Centre, Adeline Kemper of Tacoma, Washington, Irene Harmeling of Newport, and Marina Koopmeiners of St. Cloud; and sisters-in-law, Donna Kemper of Bloomington and Dorothy Kemper of Barnesville.

Marv was preceded in death by his parents; sisters and brothers, Viola Evans, Helen Hunt, Richard Kemper, Loretta Didier, Dolores Rasmussen, Dorothy Moorman, and Raymond Kemper; and brothers-in-law, Ed Evans, Ken Hunt, Shorty Didier, Roger Rasmussen, Jerome Moorman, Norman Radermacher, John Harmeling, and Linus Koopmeiners.

Ralph A. Kjeldergaard, 69 year old resident of rural Long Prairie, MN passed away Monday, August 30, 2021 at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM on Friday, September, 3, 2021, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Swanville, MN with Father Ron Dockendorf officiating.

Burial will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM on Thursday and from 9 to 10 AM on Friday both at the St. John’s Catholic Church in Swanville. Military Rites will be conducted by Swanville American Legion Post #313 and the Randall VFW Post 9073. Caring for Ralph and his family is the Shelley Funeral Chapel of Little Falls, MN. Ralph Aaron Kjeldergaard was born on September 26, 1951 in Little Falls, MN to the late Eliot and Elsie (Gregersen) Kjeldergaard.

He grew up in Cushing and attended grade school at Dr. S.G. Knight in Randall and high school in Little Falls. He enlisted in the Army his senior year and served from 1970-1972. He was stationed in Vietnam and later in Germany. While he was back home on leave, he met his sweetheart, Debra Borchert on a blind date. While stationed in Germany he proposed, and the two got married on March 17, 1973. They resided in the Long Prairie area ever since their marriage. Ralph went to work at Grey Eagle Oil as a mechanic. He later worked for Isensee Bus service as a mechanic and bus driver and did car sales at Clayt Wells Quality Cars for a while as well. In 1986 he started KJ's Repair and ran the shop until 1998 when he retired due to health issues. After retirement from the shop, he worked for Auto Value in Long Prairie and drove road grader for Bruce Township.

Ralph enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, and he was constantly working on various projects. The thing he loved the most was spending time with his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his work ethic and determination, never letting the health problems keep him down.

Ralph is survived by his wife, Debra of 48 years; 3 children, Ann (David) Koetter of Swanville, Aaron (Jessica) Kjeldergaard of Foley, Aric (Amanda) Kjeldergaard of Cushing; 8 grandchildren; siblings, Terri Holmgren of Fairborn, Ohio, Nelda (Tom) Martinson of Little Falls, Kathy (Greg) Hyatt of Pierz, Wally Kjeldergaard of Cushing, Steve Kjeldergaard of Rochester, and Dennis Kjeldergaard of St. Cloud.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, Eliot and Elsie Kjeldergaard; sisters, Connie Nelson, Daryel Karjala, and Rose Bollin; and brother, Melvin Kjeldergaard.

Gregory J. Waldorf

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Gregory J. Waldorf, age 63, of Avon, will be held on Thursday, September 2, 2021, at 11:30 am. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service at Sacred Heart Church in Freeport.

Gregory was born March 4, 1958, in Sauk Centre, MN to Roman and Dolores (Job) Waldorf. He grew up in the Albany area, graduating from Albany High School in 1976. Gregory signed up for the Navy in November of 1975. After graduation in June of 1976, he started his Naval training. Gregory entered the U.S. Navy in May of 1977, he then transferred to the Naval Reserve in April of 1979, and was honorably discharged in November of 1981. While living in Millington, TN, Gregory worked at the Millington water treatment plant and Millington Power and Light. He then moved to Paducah, KY, working onboard the tugboats that pull barges on the river. Gregory moved back to central Minnesota to work at Jennie-O Foods and New Flyer Bus Company. Gregory also volunteered for the DAV and was a member of the Moose Lodge.

In June of 2015, Gregory married June Smith, and he then moved to Avon, where the two of them resided together. In May of 2017, Gregory, unfortunately, had a severe stroke which left him to reside at the VA since September 2018.

Gregory enjoyed watching a good Twins baseball game, and playing cards, especially Cribbage and 500. He loved to drive around, stopping to visit people and tell stories. Gregory will always be remembered for his joking around and his big laugh.

Gregory is survived by his wife, June, Avon; his sons, Ryan Waldorf, Millington, TN; Trevor Waldorf, Millington, TN; his brothers and sisters; Stephen (Nancy) Waldorf, Olivia, MN; Carol (Rich) Primus, Albany; Mary (Denny) Popp, Rice; Sharon (Larry) Jacobson, LeRoy, MN; Lucy (Keith) Overman, Freeport; Ronald Waldorf, Albany; Beverly (Frank) Tokarz, Victoria, MN; Edith Gerads, St. Stephen; Bonnie (Jeff Solum) Waldorf, Minnetonka; Roxanne (Mark) Newton, Lino Lakes; Chris Waldorf, St. Cloud; Bob (Amy) Waldorf, Hanover; and Ami (Ron) Ohmann, Albany.

Melvin "Mel" R. Larson

Melvin "Mel" R. Larson, 87 year old resident of Upsala, MN, passed away on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, surrounded by family. A Funeral Service was held Monday, August 30, 2021 at Community Covenant Church in Upsala, MN with Rev. Steve Weihsmann officiating. Burial will

take place at a later date.

Mel was born in Ticonic, Iowa, on April 2, 1934 to the late Charlie and Floy Lella (York) Larson, along with his twin sister, Melva Ann. He was in the Army from 1954-1956, came home and married Joyce Nelson on October 27, 1956, his prom date from 4 years earlier, entered college at Iowa State where he graduated with a BS in Civil Engineering. Mel then decided to take his talents to a little-known startup company called Wells Concrete Products, had two sons, Scott and Ross, and retired 38 years later, which is when he and Joyce moved to Upsala, MN. Mel was interested in various hobbies and organizations.

Scouting, horseshoes, golfing, pheasant hunting, fishing, reading, crossword puzzles and woodworking, which he especially enjoyed teaching to his grandkids and anyone else who would listen. Mel was very active in the church and the men’s bible study. He never met an old movie (pre-1950) that he didn’t watch or didn’t like. Mel also lived vicariously through his sons by riding bicycles (which he crashed), 4 wheelers (which he crashed) and motorcycles (which he crashed).

Mel is survived by his loving, devoted, longsuffering wife, Joyce of 64 years, who should be sainted; sons, Scott Larson and wife Joni, Ross Larson; grandchildren, Aaron, Cassandra, Kaitlyn; greatgranddaughter, Eastyn; sisters, Melva Wannamaker and Evelyn St. Peter, and countless nieces and nephews.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Floy Lella Larson; sister, Eileen Henry; brother, Darrell and grandson, Bryan.

Lawrence J. Williams

Lawrence J. “Will” Williams, age 90 of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at the Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta, Minnesota.

A private service will be held with Deacon Ernie Kociemba officiating.

Inurnment will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Lawrence Joseph Williams was born August 11, 1931 in Freeport, Minnesota to Peter and Lena (Finken) Williams. He completed his education at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Freeport. Will served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1960.

He was united in marriage to Janet Anderson on September 15, 1956 at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in South Minneapolis. Will and Janet made their home in St. Paul while Will was a St. Paul Union Carpenter. He retired in 1993 and the couple moved to Melrose.

He was a member of the St. Paul’s Carpenter’s Union Local 322. Will enjoyed working with wood and gardening. He owned his own sawmill and milled his own lumber to work with. Will made many unique wood bowls and other items that the entire family can cherish and remember him by.

Survivors include his loving wife of nearly 65 years, Janet Williams of Melrose; children, David Williams of White Bear Lake, Julie (Wayne) Borgstrom of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Richard Williams of Staples, and Patricia (Mark) Pawelski of Stillwater; nine grandchildren, Amanda, Emily, Eric, Sam, Jake, Hannah, Lauren, Cameron, and Celeste; brother, Edmund (Shirley) Williams; and many loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Will was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Nora Ruth Williams; brothers and sisters, Butch Williams, Pete Williams, Fritz Williams, Rose Hanson, Chris Ihrke, and Jerry Williams.

Memorials are preferred.

Charles “Chuck” Jordan was born on October 16, 1957 in Biloxi, Mississippi to Donald E. Jordan and Margaret J. Jordan (Cooper/ Reynolds). He was united in marriage to Becky J. Thomas on February 29, 1988 and they later divorced. Through the years, Chuck’s interests didn’t change much, but who he shared them with did. Chuck loved fishing with his brothers, playing ball and always loved cars; playing with them, driving them and especially, collecting models and attending car shows. After he became a Dad, his life revolved around his two kids.

Chuck loved going on class trips and sharing his love of music, hunting and fishing. His later years were spent loving his grand-babies any chance he got. Pizza Ranch dates, movies and any snuggle he could get. He enjoyed traveling with his loving friend Dian, especially checking out restaurants featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Chuck was loved by those who knew him and will be greatly missed.

Chuck is survived by his father Donald Jordan of Streator, IL, step-father Robert Reynolds (Companion Leisa Fraher) of Eagan, MN, son, Benjamin Jordan (Brittney) of Swanville, MN; daughter, Molly Barthel (Shawn) of Swanville, MN; brothers, Bob Reynolds (Mary Samoszuk) David Crawford, Mark Crawford, Richard Crawford, Robert Jordan and Donald Jordan; sister, Gaylan Crawford; grandchildren, Arabella and Elijah Barthel; loving friend, Dian Parnell.

Grey Eagle History Book Now Available A History of Grey Eagle, Minnesota, a book about Grey Eagle and the surrounding area, was recently published

by Elder Eye Press.

Written by Robert Kutter, a local writer, the book details 14 decades of life in the Grey Eagle area. “The most interesting discoveries were the surprising details I uncovered about people and events in the Grey Eagle area over the decades,” said Kutter.

Did you know at one time Grey Eagle was known as “the biggest little town in Minnesota?” Do you know how Grey Eagle’s most iconic building, the Village Hall was built and used from the 1930s through the 1960s?

Commissioned by the Grey Eagle Library Association, the book is the culmination of a dream the association has nurtured for years to tell the stories of the community from its 19th Century beginning to the present.

As a nonprofit, the association asks for a tax deductible donation fee for the book to benefit the Grey Eagle Library Association.

Copies may be obtained at the library and other

local businesses. It is also available online at Amazon Books.

The library association approached Kutter about the project in 2016. For the past five years, he researched over 30 sources and conducted interviews with area residents. The most valuable resource was 70 years’ worth of the Grey Eagle Gazette newspaper preserved at the Grey Eagle Public Library.

Kutter said the two most difficult challenges were “the time required to take notes on the resources and then to organize the material into a document that makes sense to the readers.”

Searching for sources, notetaking, writing, thinking, organizing, rewriting, reviewing and more rewriting were Kutter’s process. Kutter taught high school English and language arts and believes, “If you are going to teach writing, then you better be a practicing writer. Otherwise, you have no credibility.”

The author has been writing the newsletter for the Big Birch Lake Association since 2009, and published a children’s book, The Littlest Loon, in 2013.

By Robert Kutter If you drive past Lakeview Cemetery on Todd County Road #2, 1 ½ miles south of Grey Eagle, you may see a man kneeling at gravestones. He isn’t meditating or praying necessarily, but he is cleaning headstones to make them legible.

Bill Hinman of Grey Eagle has cleaned over 110 headstones. This past Memorial Day, he looked at the gravestones of his great, great grandparents and could not read the names.

He went online to find a product that would clean the stone of the lichen and moss that has accumulated over many decades. He found a product that worked, and then asked the Cemetery Board and the Grey Eagle City Council if he could clean the headstones of veterans.

Hinman has cleaned all the veteran headstones and moved on to others that are illegible.

He finds it a peaceful place to volunteer hearing the call of loons and the songs of cardinals.

“Having the stones brighten up so you can read them is very rewarding,” he said.

“It has been an education also. I didn’t know what the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) stood for.” With the new book, A History of Grey Eagle, Minnesota, which identifies the early white settlers, he realized he has cleaned many of their stones. The oldest stone had a birthdate of 1848.

He learned that his great, great grandfather, Justus K. Hinman and his wife Cornelia were early settlers. He was grateful and humbled to clean the gravestones of three generations of his ancestors and all the markers of veterans of the Civil War, World War I and World War II. The Grey Eagle-Burtrum Lion’s Club supported his financial investment covering the cost of supplies which were ordered through Neville Hardware in Grey Eagle.

“I spray the solution on and wait 10 minutes. Then I take a non-metal scrub brush to

the stone. Then sprinkle it with water. If it needs an additional cleaning, I repeat the process.” For stubborn dirt in the crevices, he works with a toothbrush.

When visitors see the stones, they thank Hinman for the work and are amazed by the results. Hinman says it brightens the whole cemetery to look across and see the headstones gleaming in the sunlight.

Hinman began the work in the second week of June. After seeing the results of the first stone he completed, he was motivated to continue.

His wife Amy, Loren Roe, Nick Meyers, and his grandson Nick Becker have all put in a little time helping.

He goes to the cemetery in the cool of the morning and cleans for a couple of hours and then returns a few days later to do more.

Hinman said that if anyone wants to know more about the product and the process, he would be happy to help them learn more about it.

Perspective, or looking at life over time, demands that you teach children to work.

Teaching a child to work is not child abuse.

We teach them to work not for our benefit, but because it gives them dignity in a job well done today and the tools and character to win as adults in the future.

In my mind, children should be taught to work just like you’d teach them to bathe or brush their teeth—as a necessary life skill. An adult who has no clue how to tackle a job and finish it with pride is every bit as debilitated as

Dear Motor Medics, I have a newer Mazda Miata and I’m having a problem with detonation in my engine.

During cruising and under acceleration the engine will ping under load and on hills. The car calls for premium gasoline and I use it every tankful but even if I use the highest-octane premium fuel the car still pings. Do you have any ideas on what it could be?

-Mark in Sioux Falls, South Dakota Dear Mark, This may not be as bad as you think. You have asked a great question and we want to address the fuel question first as its very important. If a car specifies premium fuel, it is important to use it. Not only does it ensure the best performance from the fuel that the car can deliver, it also allows the car to burn cleaner than using less than premium lower octane fuel. When the lower octane fuel is used it is possible to build up carbon deposits which can cause detonation. You may be using premium, but you could still have some carbon buildup in the engine which is contributing to the detonation. Carbon deposits can often be removed by getting a professional fuel system cleaning done. The kind we use cleans both the injection system and the combustion chambers which is what we suggest. A professional cleaning combined with regular use of premium fuel can make a difference in the amount of detonation you get from your engine. Good luck and enjoy that car.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I drive a 2009 Dodge Caravan with the sport package. I use it for daily driving and on weekends I tow a boat in the summer and two snowmobiles in the winter. Last month my trailer light wiring harness that plugs in under the vehicle corroded so badly that I removed it from the main harness and carefully closed and protected the bare wires. After the plug removal I removed the tail lamps and carefully connected the trailer harness directly to the tail and brake lamp wires so they would not come off or short. I have hauled the trailer about three times now and on the most recent trip both turn signals failed. I don’t see any burnt fuses, but I get power to the lights.

tronic control module that controls lighting functions including the taillights and trailer lighting. When built, the trailer lights were on a separate circuit than the taillights. The tail lamp circuit is made to only carry the amp load of the two tail lamps and no more. If any extra load is added by way of a trailer the module can overload which can destroy it. The first step is to remove the added wiring and check fuses. If there is still no power you will need to have the module checked and possibly replaced.

Forever Young Choir to Perform in September

Thank you to everyone for their kind words, beautiful flowers and thoughtful cards. We especially want to thank the staff of CentraCare Sauk Centre, first responders from Grey Eagle, all of the Catholic Church volunteers, Father Ron and Patton Schad Funeral Home. We also appreciate the patience and flexibility of everyone during our “candle light” service and lunch.

By Carol Duke The Forever Young Choir has set three concert dates in September. At this time we are scheduling indoor concerts but we have contingency plans for outdoors if the Covid variant requires our venues to change.

The first concert is Sunday, September 12 at 3 p.m. at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose, alternate site would be Riverside Park Pavilion in Melrose. The second concert is Tuesday, September 14 at 6:30 p.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albany, alternate outdoor venue in the church parking lot. The third concert is Sunday, September 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church of Sauk Centre, alternate site will be the Heritage Stage at the fairgrounds.

We want our patrons to feel safe to enjoy our performances. We will distance our singers

The Forever Young Choir consists of 32 residents from our area ranging in age from 50 to 85. We love to sing and perform regardless of our age! The choir is directed by Bonnie Nelson and our accompianest is Angela Bitz (our Youngster!)

This year’s concert is a selection of Americana Music. We will perform country, patriotic, gospel and folk songs. Some of our selections include the gospel song “Marching up to Heaven”, “The River” made popular by Garth Brooks, “Take Me Home Country Roads” by John Denver and “The Trolley Song” made famous by Judy Garland in the movie Meet Me in St. Louis and more songs of Americana!

Burtrum City • August 9, 2021 The Burtrum City Council meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 9, 2021 by Mayor Ron Strassburg.

In attendance were Ron Strassburg, Kevin Rohde, Sharon Erickson, Sara Macho, Mitchell Bruggenthies and Laura Horvath.

Minutes from the July 6, 2021 meeting were read and approved by a motion made by Sara Macho and seconded by Kevin Rohde, upon vote motion was carried and minutes were accepted.

Next the finance report was read and approved; and the city discussed current bills/invoices and a motion made by Kevin Rohde and seconded by Sara Macho, finance report was accepted, and bills paid.

City discussed old/new business: New Business: - Our old contract is up with our Attorney Joe and we have signed a new contract with a rate increase up to $170.00. Motion to accept this made by Sara Macho and seconded by Kevin Rohde.

- If you rent the hall for an event, please do not take chairs out of the building. They are meant to be used inside only.

- Church would like to put up a Mini Library. City will check on options for location. Motion to accept made by Mitchell Bruggenthies and seconded by Kevin Rohde.

- Cabooze bar built a structure behind bar without obtaining a building permit from city. City will charge them a $50.00 per 1984 ordinance. Motion made by Sara Macho, and seconded by Mitch Bruggenthies.

- We still receive a lot of complaints on the school, City will check with Fire Marshall, in regard to options for keeping people out.

Since no further topics needed to be addressed the meeting was adjourned with a motion made by Sara Macho and seconded by Kevin Rohode, upon vote motion carried and meeting was adjourned.

Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 7, due to Labor Day. These are unapproved minutes.
